Tempest 2017 new World's High Score - as seen in Ready Player One
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лют 2017
- After standing for 34 years the old score finally beaten, made official at TwinGalaxies. Final frames show required machine settings for "Extreme" mode: 5 lives, no bonuses, Hard difficulty, start on level 9.
This record score, of course, doesn't use any bugs or exploits that were discussed in the book. Note, however, that the score in book (189412) wouldn't actually work for the credit exploit. The score must start with 17. Here's the game code in question.

Always wondered what the correct technique was for killing those red flippers! Cheers Dave, now I know! New WR coming soon!
Arcade Tempest was the best Tempest version ever!
Well it’s the original :D
Awesome!! My favorite arcade game of all time. If only I had the unlimited super zapper way back when. This game took a lot of quarters from me as it becomes almost impossible to to survive not too long into it. Superb game play on an original machine. Thanks so much for sharing this with us 👍
Truly one of the most classic 80s games every produced, and very hard to play. It takes an amazing amount of peripheral visual skills to get this game down at this level setting. Well done.
An amazing game.
there has NEVER been another game like this. This dude is so baller!
@provisionalhypothesis- of the name include Tempest, it doesn't count. I'll look at those other games...
Love this game. Miss the 80's.
I had a high score (over 800,000) at a local arcade back in the 80's on this machine. The arcade had one with the "buggy" chips which allowed secret extras when ending your over 180,000 score in certain 2 digit combos. One gave you 40 games or allowed you to start your game at the highest bonus level as an example. That's how I accomplished my high score. One combo allowed you to play the attract mode. Ending with a certain combo in attract mode gave 255 lives. I suspect a local legend - DNA - used that trick to best my score. I was not a skilled player by any stretch. I relied on the spikes for machine gun rapid fire and always had a time with the "electric" thingies that cleared a lane when energized. Note: the SuperZapper can be used twice in game play. First time clears everything, second time clears nearest to you threat. Love this game! Joystick (magazine from back then) had all the number combos listed which I could share with you folks if interested.
You're close on the Superzapper but the second use kills based on the order that the enemy was created. It kills the oldest. Since thats quite often the one closest to you, I can see how people would guess that. I can score over a million pretty easily in default settings, but remember this particular game was in a super-hard championship mode for the video (5 lives total, no bonuses).
Yes, I acknowledge that this was not done on a machine in "easy" mode. All the more admirable. My scores were using a machine with the buggy chips and score tricks I learned from Joystick. Like I mentioned I am by no means a skilled player. I die quite quickly when I get up into the 800K region.
I dug out my old copy of Joystick. I must have used the "green level" bonus start combo (180046) to get my high score. Again, your achievement far eclipses my own. Well played, Dave!
Man this was one game that was super intimidating
I was the boss at this.
It became my first addiction. I think I got bored with it. Back when it cost 1 quarter per game. Out of quarters you find something else to do. Like attach a thread to a quarter, have a friend distract the store owner, and drop that sucker in like 50 times in a row.
absolutely zero shits are given about flippers. he leaps in and assasinates pulsars. i love it.
Very impressive performance. :)
This was my game! Good job
The score counter 'turns over' at 1 million, usually hit if you start at 81 (green with red player) and go all the way to 99, gets there just before 99 but sometimes after, was same level of difficulty where I saw a player get that far. 97 and 98 are reoeats of 81 and 82, 99 and further the surfaces are randomly generated but are any of the 16 shown. 1.020 million is what I saw, in a defunct arcade in Tucson barely west of the main gate of the U of A in Tucson.
I loved playing this when are family got are first computer back in the mid to late 90’s I would play this for hours
I remember looking at the arcade cabinet art as a young kid and feeling intimidated by it, lol.
Saw Tempest cabinet being dollied into a local arcade the morning game was released and the only thing I could say when the owner turned it on was, "Wow." :)
_how the hell did wade score 800,000 on this_
Wade didn't, not at this difficult setting. But on the normal settings, 800K is hard but doable.
60k of it was bonus points that was earned by starting on a higher level.
Legendary
Dude, that is rocking some.shit old school...
Awesome!
For anyone who's curious, this is Dave Plummer! Retired Microsoft Engineer. He has his own YT channel, and actually just released a video on this. (ua-cam.com/video/EuSMCWu02hA/v-deo.html).
I have no clue as to what the hell this is but I love it
There was nothing like it at the time. You need to try it
In 1983 or 84
When it changed levels you'd get a rush. Especially when getting to new levels
This was a game people playrd in 80s .. arcade machines
It was very fun. We didnt playvatvhome but at a cafe or location. This was a tough top 20 game of that era
I spent probably 900 on that game over 8 yrs ...lol
We had console games but these were pre console some and highly addictive.. a quarter per game last about 8 to 25 mins avg unless u were really
good . On one game my buddy we used a tactic and thry would play 5 to 12 hours one quarter.. thisxwas rare.
No internet no books no cheats no strategy to win but we still would try to conquer them
Have fun u can still purchase a machine that has them all for about 3400us
Havecfun studying this great period of gaming history
Lol
Ready Player 1!!!
I made it to level 104 all the time and when you finished that level, the game shut off and reset all scores, it didn't matter which game i played, they all did it.
Uh, no. The levels stop at 96, then circle, square, plus, then random for 99 and higher. Level stops at 99, game plays fine forever. Wraps at 1M. Max 5 lives.
Uh yeah, I” m CAM loved those invisible levels
COLEY FOLEY SAYS: YOU'RE GOOD. (THIS GAME WAS SO FUCKIN UH... "AHEAD OF IT'S FUCKIN TIME"...!)
Dayummm !!
The video doesn't do the game justice, visually. As the game used vector graphics, it's super sharp looking. And the color vector display is bright and colorful. Congrats on the record score.
Meat vs. Machine at its finest.
What book were the bugs and exploits talked about? I've been trying to find tempest again since 1990 at least. I had no idea there was a book about it.
dave are you still in saskatchewan. I seen lazlo play no one ever knew if your scores were legit. Good to see you excel as a canadian player!
how is it when the flippers are flipping onto you and you get them and for me a few flips and i get them but mostly they kill me and you are just letting them flip on you and your still going
How many quarters did it take to get this good? ( you see me slip on carpal tunnel wrist supports and attempt to get past level 15...)
Very impressive, indeed: you topped the great Laszlo Takacs' 405K set in 2010.
And I see you and another guy - Jeffrey Livingston - are fighting for the Tempest Throne this year. But it seems to me you have the 'Difficulty Hard' upper hand: go for the Tournament record next? (Laslo Takacs 782K; Jeffey Livingston 549K).
What track would you consider the most prestigious? And which one has the hardest record to beat?
But what do you mean by "after standing for 34 years"? Tempest Extreme Settings is a modern era track (?).
Thanks! I figured most difficult was hardest to do, so most prestigious, so did that. The only other one I'd consider doing is the "factory settings" high score from 81. 3 lives, medium difficulty, bonuses every 20, starting at 81. I don't want to do the "starting at level 9" because it takes an hour each time.
I don't like the "finger tapping" mode of play where you keep the lane full of shots, it's kinda boring. So I play the more "twitch" style where you have to react and move. Just a different style.
BTW, just watched the Jeffrey Livingston video, very nice, he plays the same style as I do. Never having seen the Takacs video (if there is one), the Livingston game is the highest I've seen anyone else do in that mode.
Thanks Dave. I took me years (well, decades actually) to reach those levels. Your world record on extreme settings is a thing of beauty. As someone who can appreciate the fine details of high-level Tempest play, I just want to let you know that I appreciate just how good a player you are. Congrats!
I watched the 405 game that laslo did!!
Super Zapper..........
Any way for you to tap in to the videofeed somehow and let us see it in all of its glory next attempt you do?
Nice game Dave, congrats! Speaking of the credit cheats, I don't think the info you've provided is completely correct. I have a Tempest machine with a Vector Labs multi-game which allows me to play the Rev 1 ROMs. I can replicate the cheats easily now just like I did back in the 80s. The score definitely need to be > 17xxxx, but much higher scores work too. I've seen references that the 3rd and 4th digit must be 29-60, but I haven't confirmed this yet. I plan on making a few videos to show some of these cheats in action. It is very cool to see them work again. I'll probably make a video or two playing through the green levels. I'm not as good as you, but on Easy and bonus every 10k, my high score is just over 1.2m.
I can't claim to remember the bug exploits with any specifics, so a video would be great! Once you can play long term at medium and 20K, you've mastered the game. But even I'm not there most of the time! I die off slowly in upper green these days!
@@DavesGarage I'll definitely make a video showing the 40 credit cheat (it's actually 100+ credits but the machine maxes out at 40) as well as the level select cheat. What is interesting is that they work in MAME using Rev 1 ROMs, but the game resets if you get some other end scores DURING gameplay so it's hard to execute. The reset never happens on the real machine. I have captured that on video too, so I'll include that. I think my best at arcade settings, medium/20k bonus, is low-level green, and that was 20+ years ago. One other thing with the cheats if you're going to try them, they don't work in free play mode, so you'll have to go into normal play first. Have you ever played the "Alien" early prototype version? I am really curious to see what happens at level 17 if it's red or not, and what else is different. I can make it to green with normal Tempest, but I have yet to make it to red on this version! (There is no auto-fire which makes it VERY hard).
@@klingerphotography156 The "hardest" cheat to achieve I only managed once or twice - you get it into cheat mode, then certain digits will actually make attract mode PLAYABLE, and if you take over and then can end in attract mode on the right digits, it does the 255 man trick, and then certain digits will get it into real game mode to play those out. That's how I did a marathon in the 80s on it. But it's very hard to do and I don't even have record of what the right digits would be anymore!
@@DavesGarage Hi Dave, I finally got around to making the Tempest video showing off the 40-credit and level-select cheat. I spun it a bit by talking about Ready Player One. Let me know what you think: ua-cam.com/video/iSMIRKSztPQ/v-deo.html P.S. I also just got a score of 990,425 in proper arcade settings (medium and 20k) - that is definitely my high score of all time at those settings.
@@klingerphotography156 what comes after green? Is it red? I remember red but that was early 1980s
what is the goal in this game i just recently got this and i keep getting killed it is hard to understand
Dave, haveyou examined the cheat modes for this game? You can set a dip switch so there is a demo mode and you can start up to level 75. ALSO though, and much more fun, there are almost 100 codes depending on the last 2 digits of your score when you finish a game and restart in demo mode where you can get invulnrability, infinite lives, infinite supercharges etc.
Those are two separate things, but yet! Demo mode is cool but clears your score at the end of the game, which is fair. To use the two-digit hacks, which is actually a bug, you have to get a score between 180,000 and 200,000, let it go through about half an attract mode, and then they'll take effect.
“46” was the trick to get 40 free credits
The thumbnail pic!!!! We used to called that level “the boobs” as young boys. 😅
Ok.,. Felicidades!!!
Chispas era excelente!! Muy buenos tiempos.
Did you beat the record or did someone beat your record?
i used to destroy this game back in the 80s my first look at one was at a nearby ski resort

Do you (or Anyone) know what is going on in the game logic where deaths are significantly more likely every 10K points, such as 19,793 or 39498, or 99,414, etc. I own an original Atari Tempest Cabinet game, and nearly all the top scores listed on the game's screen are right that before the bonus ship is awarded.
That's cause and effect - if you WOULD have gotten a few more points - and your score wouldn't end right before a 10K boundary. Those times it doesn't, you get the extra man to carry your score FOREWARD if that makes sense. Not the game logic.
@@DavesGarage I understand what you're suggesting; you're suggesting it is mainly a perception issue. I own one original Atari cabs that I bought in 1983, and have played 1000s upon 1000s of games over the years and there is a pattern where the game has increased deaths around 10K point breaks. It has become rare for me to have deaths other than around the 10K marks; a vast majority are something like 99,893, etc. Rare death scores are inbetween. Thanks
My high scores in the 80's were over 900000 like the one at the top of the screen.
That'd be in standard mode I assume? 3 lives, 20k bonus, etc? That's how I scored the 999,996 and similar. But the record is done in much higher difficulty, no bonus lives, and so on, so a little different.
did not notice that in the description. Never knew there was such a thing. Just playing in the arcades.
But there was a record higher than it...? Was that one not legit?
JoeDan54 this is the Extreme difficulty record. There have been higher scores but on much easier settings. These are defined by Guinness and Twin Galaxies.
Fantastic work...this is my favorite game, but I am terrible at it. Looking for a good source to get educated on how to properly deal with Fuseballs and Pulsars. Suggestions?
"as seen in Ready Player One"? come the fuck on
I STILL can't break 100,000....😂😂😂😂

The machine was set to five lives only with no bonus with the machine either on Hard or Hardest difficulty. I don’t think the green levels are humanly possible on those settings.

Love this video game, such an adrenaline rush! Don't think kids of this generation know this level of heart pounding game play. 🤔🕥➡️
