And the US Army in WWII almost leveled it with artillery fire. The Germans were using it as an observation post. They had already destroyed the Abby at Monte Casino. - Seems like D-Day and the invasion of France is the biggest talked about and written about part of the war. The Allied invaded Italy a year prior and it was an absolute bloody slog. The Germans held the high ground at every advance. An entire amphibious operation was planned and executed just to be able to get around the German defense and capture Rome more quickly. This was the landing at Anzio. Italy was never fully captured by the Allies at the close of the war. Italy is a hellscape for fighting a war.

I got the opportunity to walk up the tower in the mid 1980s. You could walk around the porticoes at each level. I had the bright idea to walk around the second to top level and there was a woman hugging the wall walking around the opposite direction. We met at the lowest point (furthest leaning side) and I opted to go around her. There are no railings on these porticoes (there was on at the top level) and it's smooth marble flooring. I had some serious vertigo, but a fun story to tell.
Moral of the story. Admit that you made a mistake and start over, rather than waste significantly more resources trying to fix a problem you have identified early in your project.
They want to preserve the historical value, given that the second part they continued is after hundred of years after the war. They were also not expecting the land composition given it was hundred of years ago and not that advance in technology. Building and disassembling it will take another lots of years.
Yes, during the early days of its construction that is precisely what should have happened. Now, as a unique historical landmark that can't be torn down, the building's plight is a ridiculously challenging technical problem, even for modern engineers. No one wants to be known as the engineer who accidentally destroyed it while trying to save it.
Ah... I love humanity... They spent so much more time and money trying to save the tower then just let it fall and build 200 more towers like that! Love our spirit to maintain culture and our pass history :D
At about 2 minutes in, you give a nice physical demonstration of leaning instability in action. Following that, we get a graphic that explains how the two torque equations work together. But what seems to be missing, which you refer to only with the phrase? " Let's introduce a small perturbation..." (great word by the way!) Without describing what that would have to be in order to instigate an asymmetrical loading upon the ground. What were you thinking? It might take? A minor tremor? A strong gust of wind? Neither of those occurred in your lab when you did your physical experiment. What factor, that could also be similarly present in the actual construction of the real tower, caused your concrete plates to start bearing more on one side of the sponge than the other?

Could you guys make a video about the President Costa e Silva Bridge (Rio-Niteroi Bridge)? It's a 13.3-km-long bridge that connects the cities of Niterói and Rio de Janeiro over the Guanabara Bay and it's the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the Southern Hemisphere.

I didn't understand what you said at the end. If the leaning instability is because of the height of the tower, then why did it start leaning even when the tower was only partially built? Am I missing something? Any answers appreciated.
The leaning instability was caused by the soil condition (soft ground) There’re much taller towers that don’t lean since the soil is compact to the right conditions. Doesn’t matter it wasn’t as tall as the finished tower, it was still tall enough to cause a lean since the ground is soft!
Hi. This video is really informative and helpful. Thanks for that. This tower more probably a mistake and trying to make its correct. You can consider one of the best architect in the world i.e. "Tanjore Big Temple" built by chola emperor.
2:14 The 3 meter Scale on this visual demonstration is not accurate. People can be a maximum of, as of current knowledge, 2.72m tall(Robert Wadlow). Even if those people were as tall as Robert wadlow, it wouldn't have been 3 metres, and further the people are taller than the depth demonstrated, which demonstrates it's inaccuracy quite evidentially😅.

Being OCD, this repair would drive me nuts. I would have disassembled the entire thing. Stabilized the soil beneath while also making it retain its earthquake resistant properties, and then rebuilt the tower, changing things slightly so it would have been perfectly vertical from top to bottom!
So no degree and no modern tools equals a building that will last longer than a building built by an engineer and the most advanced tools? Make that make sense.

@moealsharif13 No, it wasn't. It was continuously going down year by year ,millimeter by millimeter, and their was going to be a time in the future when it was finally going to be collapsed. That's why they reinforced it at the foundation. So it does not lean any further and collapse. Because people started to visit the place .

Continuing construction after a long pause and realization of a lean already?? That is ridiculous. Why did they do that?
Engineers have bright mind, but they are exceptionally lazy. If there was a tower, why would you make a new one. Just continue.
