31:26 You started in the middle! I thought this stitch was going to be impossible. Incredible.
I sewed myself a pair of pants once, under my wife's guidance. I cannot do that 4-dimensional stuff. I leave it to the experts.

Hello Paul and sock monkeys, Thank you so much! Please keep watching!
Wow! You are a treasure of information! Your videos will definitely help me when I tackle reupholstering my old RV seats. Might also be one of the best reasons for investing in a Juki I’ve had my eye on 😊
Hello RV Gal, Thank you so much for your wonderful words! I hope I can be helpful. Please keep watching!
Great job…your spacial apperception of how the pieces are sewn together and reassembled is spot on!!, curious about leather to vinyl color matching…how does that work🤔
Hello Hobson, My supplier Keyston Bros, has matching color and grain vinyls and leathers. Please keep watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks for the response, I have learned a lot from the short time I have been watching. I have an 1981 Chrysler Imperial with the Mark Cross maroon leather interior. Time and the sun has taken its toll on it and the front and probably the back seats need to be reupholstered. But I think to go back with leather will be prohibitively expensive!$$$
Amazing job. You are an artist sir!
Hello, Thank you so much for the nice compliment! Please keep watching!
Great content Rudy, wishing you continued success on you tube. As soft as leather is, vinyl is much easier to care for over time.
Hello James, Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I agree with you totally. Please keep watching!

Hello George! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Please keep watching!
I had an upholstery shop reupholster my grandmother's rocking chair which was made in January, 1956. I asked for leather, but he recommended vinyl. It looked very nice when finished ($500 later), BUT, the vinyl started flaking off weeks after I brought it home.
The vinyl upholstery was a waste of time and money.
Hello Profit, That is a tragedy that he used the cheap Chinese vinyl that flakes apart. I only use the best vinyl, I never go cheap on my customers. Please keep liking and watching!
This is why I am scared of vinyl and fake leathers. Cheap stuff never lasts more than 6 months to a year with mild usage.
We are new to your channel, but I wanted to thank you for your content. Your mellow intelligent personality and humor are a welcome change. It even helps us relax and helps us destress, even if the video is not specific to my own project, the general information and knowledge is.
Hello The, Thank you so much for all of your wonderful, kind words. I really appreciate it. I am glad you found me and my videos. Please keep liking and watching!
Thank you sir: I wish I could have watched your video's before I replaced a couple of interiors from the mid 30's and a mid 50's Cadillac years ago!!! It would of saved me a lot of time, just copying and learning as I went!!!
Hello David! You got my interest when you said Mid 30's Cadillac. I had many Mid-fifties and sixties Cadillacs myself. One 1958 Eldorado Brougham, One of 26 Lake Placid Blue and one of 8 Blue Mojave cloth interior. 1958 Eldorado Seville, and a 1965 Eldorado. Memories... Thanks for watching!
Sweet! Thanks

Hello Patty. Oh you brought up Lucille, I haven't got over it yet... Jeffrey has been serving us very well though. I think you will do just fine with your upholstery! Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Oscar, Thank you so much! Please keep watching!
New sub... I have the utmost respect for your abilities.... tried to do this but only one hand working so just gave up plus i am seventy three... made a lot of trips to mexico for their seat covers... almost always disappointed unless you stay and watch. I have seen those men look like they were on fast forwards or something... most likely "Peyote"
Hello Morgan, I really appreciate your sub! Thank you so much for the kind words. Please keep watching!
Another great video. I would like at some point see a video on calculating material for a bigger job. For instance, I have a '56 Chevy that will be my first job. I'll be doing both bench seats, 4 door panels, and the package tray. Simple classic black tuck-n-roll. I'm sure you know how much it would take just from experience but it would be helpful for me and maybe others to know how to do a few measurements and figure it out. Thanks
Hello Yoda, It really is about pulling out your tape measure. Most roll goods come 54 inches wide. Then measure in yards. Then tell your upholstery supplier how many yards you need. Please keep watching!
I SO enjoyed watching this, it's mesmerizing to watch your expertise at work! I love my JUKI industrial sewing machine and I think I might be able to do some of this. I think it's really smart that you start at the mark and sew in both directions, makes sew much sense. You have some great shears.....brand? What is your seam allowance, 1/4", 3/8"? What thread is best, 92 poly? You give great instructions, beautiful work, Sir!! THANK YOU!!
You answered my thread question in your "Sewing machine used" video. Yay! I've used a lot of the 92 thread in sewing awnings, etc. Thx
Hello Nancy, I got my shears at Hobby Lobby. Seam allowance is more like 3/8" Thank you for the nice comment! Please keep watching!

Old School Auto Upholstery Techniques SIR, you really are impressive. I have been Bing watching your videos and your work is so very impressive. I can not believe how fast you are even with some parts of the video sped up. You have great attention to detail. My question is why do some people change the material to Vinyl? Isn't leather so much stronger? I know Vinyl is a lot cheaper but to me the strength is not the same. I know if I had to get my seats repaired and my seat upholstery was leather, that is what I would get it fixed with. What is the difference between the grained leather that domestic cars usually come with compared to the smooth and supple leather on European automotive seats? Is one stronger then the other? I own a 2016 Ford Escape Titanium with leather seats and I hate what the grained leather looks like. Thank you once again for sharing your talented work.
Hello Mark, Thank you so much for all the kind words. I hope since your binging, that you thumbs up every video and sub! Really it comes down to how much the customer wants to spend. 90% of my customers opt for the cheaper vinyl instead of the higher cost for leather. There are many grains of leather available to choos from. Even though leather is stronger, it lasts about the same as vinyl. Thank you for watching!
Another great video thank you!
Hello John, Thank you so much! Please keep watching!
Hey. I really enjoy your work. You are very skilled. Thumbs up from Norway 🇳🇴

Hello Bz, You are so welcome! Please keep liking and watching!
Many folks prefer leather and vinyl coverings for auto seats. I prefer real wool fabric. Warm in cooler weather and doesn't fry your backside when entering a vehicle in hot weather. Granted cleaning is more difficult but comfort overrides that concern. I was first made aware of this by my neighbour who is a tractor trailer owner operator. He swears it is much more comfortable when seated for 10 hrs per day than any other fabric he has experienced. I had a local upholstery shop recover my pickup's bench seat five years ago and never looked back. Watching your videos makes me realize the complex techniques and long learned skill involved in your trade. You have my deepest respect. All the best to you and yours.
Hello Ray, Wool broadcloth was the standard in the 1930's to 1940's. Your right, it is nice stuff. Thank you for the kind words! Please keep watching!
I prefer genuine fair trade Naugahyde when it’s available.
your work is amazing! thank you for your videos showing your talent

Not only do I learn how to reupholster a seat but I get free Spanish and French lessons. :D
Hello Darnell, Yep, and Spanish and French aren't even my second languages. Mandarin Chinese is as I had a Chinese life for 12 years. Please keep liking and watching!
Nice!
Hello Lynn, I am so happy you liked it! Please keep watching!
Awe$ome!!
Hello Unfinished, I am $o happy you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Ok. I've watched this video a few times now and the other day I started my first bottom seat cover remake for a Grand Marquis. The question that came to my mind is, "why couldn't we take the center sections of the seat bottom and instead of making each piece separate and then sewing the edges to attach them back into a larger piece, why couldn't we just sew the vinyl and foam along a pattern line to make the seat bottom look like the original? I hope this makes sense what I'm trying to describe. I know there must be a reason you did it this way, but it seems like a lot more work. What am I missing? Also, a nice video topic might be addressing the velco in the bottom of the formed seat cushions and how to address the factory serged white feather material that is designed to attached to the velcro. I had to buy some loopy strip material from the upholstery supply shop and glue it the bottom of my seamed areas so I would have something to attached to the seat foam velcro. I don't have a serger. Two last thoughts... I think your wrong sometimes... "this is rocket science or close to it" and my technique number 1 is "watch your videos" Thanks for sharing so much info.
Hello Rob, Thanks for viewing my videos, I hope they are helpful for you. The difference between a top stitch and separate panels are a huge difference, both on function and appearance. With a top stitch, the panel will still lay flat when laid out on a surface like a table. Separate panels can be formed to shapes, such as higher seat bolsters or lower seat inserts. Also, with the separate seat panels, you can sew the fuzzy side Velcro to use as the listing. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
Another great video!😊
Hello Michael, Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Please keep watching!
You crack me up-
Hello Dell, Oh, we can enjoy together! Please keep liking and watching!
Nice job!
Hello 31 Acruz, Thank you so much for your kind words! Please keep watching!
Hello Rudy, i am learning automotive upholstery here in france i really like watching your videos, you showed me lots of techniques that i did not know or that i did not fully grasp yet you teach me tons love you :)
addendum: i am starting my best friends 2006 mustang tomorow any advice for this particular car ? and would you be interested in giving me feedback if i were to send you the pictures of my work to you via email ?
Hello LB, I think you will do just fine with the Mustang. I may be able to answer some questions in comments section. Thank you for watching!
Have you made a video on steering wheels as I’ve always wanted to make my own steering wheel covers
Hello Acidic, I did a lot of steering wheels before my UA-cam days... Sorry to say that I do not have that video for you. Maybe one day I will get that customer. Please keep liking and watching!
Another video I just loved watching. Very satisfying work. One question though, I noticed that the holes on the left side for the brackets and so forth had been cut and stitched around the perimeter on the original cover. Just wondered why you didn’t do that? Seemed like the point of it is to have a less chance of tearing on the vulnerable side where people are getting in and out all the time.
Also, I would love to give you a super thanks for all you have taught me. But I can’t seem to figure out how to access it? I find the button when I watch on TV, but it just tells me to go to the app, and I can’t find it there.
Hello Bams, Thank you so much for saying so. You made me look. I reviewed the video and saw that I duplicated the original design. One better, the factory edge was just a raw cut, while mine had a stronger sewn edge. I did not see what you saw, sorry. Either way, there is no stress on the cover in the bottom areas. In 44 years of doing this I have never had a problem. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
@@bams50 Hello Bams, I really appreciate that thought. Most of the time I'm on my desktop computer. My Super Thanks button is in the three-dot button next to the share button.
Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery OK, it looks like the original holes had been stitched around them but when you put your cover on, they hadn’t been cut, just circled. Anyway, keep on going, my friend, can’t wait to see what you share with us next!
@@bams50 Hello Bams, Right On! Right on. Please keep liking and watching!
I paused the video for around 5 minutes trying to figure out what closed caption setting I must have accidentally turned on.🤔 Left the video to look at a different video to verify it is part of the video and not my settings. Now Im back to finish the video.
Hello Alka, I know right? At the time I was advised that I should include closed captioning. I don't do that anymore... Thanks for hanging in there with me! Please keep liking and watching!
Rudy, great video. 3 questions: 1.) Instead of using an air gun for the adhesive, can you use an aerosol adhesive can like 3M? 2.) I notice you don't do a back/reverse stitch when you first started sewing. Is it not necessary? 3.) Your video is titled "Changing Leather Seats To Viny", but you didn't really talk about it. I'm a beginner in upholstery and would like to know what you recommend and what to look for when it comes to using vinyl fabrics. Are there vinyl fabrics that appear and feel as good as leather?
Thanks for the closed captions. I'm partially deaf so it really helps.
Hello Starnet, I never, ever use the spray glue from a can. Very unreliable. A lock stitch is only required when sewing two pieces together, especially the edges. Keyston Bros. has a matching vinyl and leather program. Really the biggest difference with my customers is the cost difference. Please keep watching!
What are you using to keep your gun from plugging up ?
Hello Don, Nothing. The glue in the gun reactivates when used often. Please keep watching!
Great videos from a talented craftsman, I subbed today and have been watching. Question? Do the vinyl's hold up and last comparable to the leather/vinyl factory covers? My covers in my 2000 Silverado and 2002 Yukon are tired and worn.
Hello Barry, Thank you so much for the kind words. Welcome aboard! When it comes down to it, all vinyl's and leathers age with normal wear. Just be sure to use automotive vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!
When adding the foam backing to the material why do you sew a edge around the whole pattern
Hello Tx9er, It makes it alot easier and more acurate to sew. Please keep watching!
Have a question I noticed you don't put some type of material before you put the foam. Down so the Springs will not eat up the foam is it a wise idea to do that to help the springs from eating through the foam.
Hello Michael, In a perfect world, I could have put down some burlap over the springs. The factory never isolated the foam from the springs. This video was about a seat cover. I also didn't change his motor oil or wash his windshield. I always give the customer what they want. In business, you get the job done and move on to the next one. If you don't you will end up with angry customers. Please keep liking and watching!

What is the tip size of your glue gun?
And what is the manufacturer?
Hello Top, I do not know the tip size on the cheapo Harbor freight spray gun. In 44 years I never paid attention to the tip size. I just shoot the glue through the spray guns. Not rocket science I guess. Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
If you don't mind me asking, how much do you charge per seat for a job like this? Also how many hours did it take to do a job like this?

Do you have specific tips for old Mercedes 300D seats?
Hello Afan, I am sorry to say that at this point I do not. Maybe one day I will have that customer. Please keep liking and watching!
First off, I love the videos. I have a question I can’t find the answer to. It’s a few UA-camrs that do upholstery but don’t respond to your comments. I been looking for the answer to how do you recreate the wrinkle look in leather seats? Some car come factory with the wrinkles. Case in point. I have a 91 and 92 Camaro. The 92 have leather and I want the 91 redone in leather but I don’t want it smooth. I want the factory wrinkle look. If you are not sure about what I’m talking about, Google 92 Camaro leather interior and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. Maybe you already have a video you can refer me to. Thank.
Hello David, Thank you so much for saying so. I was working on those cars when they were new. It's simple. The seat inserts were made with extra material. The leather was "Gathered" when sewn allowing for extra material and therefore the wrinkled look. That was a design back then and was popular in many cars. Just easily duplicate what was original. Mission accomplished. Please keep liking and watching!

I am new to this but when you mark around your patterns with white Chinese marker don’t u have to add seam allowance. I noticed when you were cutting out your patterns you were cutting on the white line
Hello User, If you mean sewing on the white line while making a pattern, That is where I cut the material just outside of the white line to make the pattern. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery it’s me again but I want to hopefully clear my question on your china marker white mark. So after you have cut a part of the old seat cover to make a pattern you bring it to a piece of vinyl and draw a white mark around that pattern onto your vinyl. Now that white trace you just made around on your vinyl do you actually sew on that white line when your ready to sew everything together? And my other question is do you add extra vinyl on the outside of the white line you just traced around the pattern for seam allowance?
@@user-rm8bt1pj9f Hello User, I have several videos that show the making of seat panels from patterns. Check the video again, you will see me sew right on the white line. Then I cut the part as close as possible to the white line without cutting the stitch. Then just sew the panels back together as they were before. Try it! Please keep liking and watching!
Your awesome
