How To Install Your Nest Cam With Floodlight

- The new #NestCam with Floodlight illuminates the night sky to keep an eye on the areas that matter most to you. The Nest Cam with Floodlight is designed to replace an existing floodlight with a wired connection.
Here’s how to install the Nest Cam with Floodlight on your home:
1. Scan the QR code on the Nest Cam in the Google Home app, then follow the instructions on how to remove your old floodlight.
2. For safety, turn off the power to your old floodlight via your home breaker first.
3. To start installation on your new floodlight, connect the green grounding wire provided to the existing grounding wire.
4. Pull the wires through the ground box, then secure the mounting plate to your wall by screwing it in.
5. Place the cover over the mounting plate. The blue arrow and G should be facing up. Once you hear a click, screw it in to secure it.
6. Connect the floodlight wires with the home wires: white wire with white wire, then black wire to black wire. Push the wires back through the cover and into the junction box.
7. Position your floodlight over the cover. Twist counterclockwise to align the clips with the holes, push, then clockwise to set in place. You will hear a click when it’s set.
8. Mount the camera to the front of the floodlight magnetically and connect the power cable to the camera.
9. Turn power back on. The floodlight will light up and camera will blink blue if it’s working.
10. Position the floodlights where you want them, then twist the knobs to secure.
11. Connect the Nest Cam to your Wi-Fi, and finish set up in the Google Home App.

Hey Vrashank, thanks for posting. After removing the screws from the mounting plate cover, you can pull it off. You may need to use a flat head screwdriver to unclip the side, top and bottom clips. You can check this helpful link as a reference: bit.ly/3HfhWjv.
So far I only have one of the 5 up. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOXxsTZ3ptV_Pk0fFl8bNZvVqeoqBQFwe My son ran out of time, with motion detector etc. I have it over my garage door. It works great. Have seen a couple of cats, my dogs, when I am out front. And had a bee buzzing around right in front of it. It works very well. It even shows the neighbour's driveway, but only shows movement just past my own, which is very long. I highly recommend them.

Does it matter how high you install the floodlight cameras? I know the indoor cameras (nest can battery) are recommended to be installed 6.5 feet high

@@madebygoogle The problem currently with that plan is the Google Home app is functionally inferior to the Nest app (by a large margin), which makes the proposition of spending £££/$$$ much less enticing compared to the functionality I already get from the Nest app and my Google Cam IQ Outdoor.
My current cam is on the front of my home and I WAS planning on purchasing a Google cam with floodlight, but I'm not going to pay £269 for the privilege of "enjoying" an inferior user experience! If you ever get the Google Home app to the same level as the Nest app, then count me in. 👍

I agree. The Nest app has a notably superior user interface than the Google app. I wish Google would just copy the nest app if that’s the only way to get the same user experience.

We have 4 nest cameras using the Nest app. Do I understand correctly that this camera is NOT compatible with the Nest App and only Google Home App? That would make this a hard pass for me!
Purchased a Nest Camera (wired) with floodlights. It couldn't find the device? I use home app with a doorbell, 3 interior cameras (plug in) beautifully.
I just installed this floodlight today. It's nice the only thing is the power cable for the camera is short that it does not let you adjust the camera and hide the wire. Whoever designed it has a house with a light on the sidewall outside. So I have the wire in the front sticking out and the mini speaker facing up if it rains it's gonna go right in the speaker. I might return it just because of that don't know unless they have a longer power cable for the camera that gives me an option to hide the cable and face the camera the right way. The camera was installed under an eave, looks good, video great but I don't think it was made for under the eave installation, think it was made to be installed sideways, sidewall something like that

@@madebygoogle I was hyped to purchase this until reading the above comment. My existing security lights are also soffit-mounted, so I don't see this working for me. Seems like no one was even considering this install method when designing it. Rings Floodlight Camera can soffit install with no problems.
If you follow the instructions wires should not be an issue. Wire MUST be inside the electrical, octagon box.

I was told you can undermount an on a soffit and there’s no way it works the court is too short to flip the camera upside down buddy have any ideas?.
Our floodlight is switch controlled, does this have to be on the switch on position all the time? Or remove the switch entirely and connect the live wire on the switch box to the load wire so it gets hot/live all the time?
It should be wired to permanent live (if there is already a switch in the circuit you could just leave the switch in the "on" position and use the switch live as if it was a permanent live to achieve the end result but with a bit less work involved compared to wiring in a true permanent live) and you can use the Google Home app to control when the lights come on.
I hope it's as awesome as it looks...

How do I mount this vertically? The position of the wire won't allow me to mount from the soffit and exposes the cameras microphone to the elements. Is there an additional plate mount that I need to purchase?

I’ve enjoyed the Nest motion flood lights and camera. A qualified electrician installed mid-Feb. and I love it! The light is motion-style. Just last week I noticed the light stays on all the time. How to fix?

@@madebygoogle the problem is that the Google Home app sucks compared to the Nest app. If you are going to force us to use the Google Home app for all new Nest products at least make the app good.
I’ve changed my ISP and tried connecting my Google Nest Floodlight Camera to the new router. In order to do this, I have to delete it from my Google Home App then add it again. The app is not allowing me to do so and it seems as if I’m not the only one to have this problem.
Do they offer a plug in version? I don't have any old flood light system.
Not ideal, but you can modify a power cord and get a weatherproof outlet cover. You would still need to get a junction box though. Not an electrician though.
Are the bulbs user replaceable?

How do I remove the mounting plate cover? I need to rotate the poster cover by about 90 degrees to align the floodlight and camera to spot I want to cover. Even after removing the 4 screws, I am not able to remove the white plate cover.

I had to pry it off with a flathead screwdriver and some wedges.
Can it be installed on the suffit? Would the motion sensor work? Any issues?

Installing it any other way (such as horizontally, sideways, upside down, or at an angle) may reduce the floodlight’s functionality by limiting the motion sensor’s field of view. Does it have to be mounted on a wall, or can it mounted hanging under a soffit?
I've been trying to determine this also. The magnet mount for the camera to base leaves me wondering how far the angle will work.
I went to Best Buy to purchase 2 of these tonight, and while they couldn't locate the ones their inventory said they had, they did have a display unit out. I played with it, and seems that the camera can be oriented for a hanging installation, but is limited by the cord to a downward 20° or so angle. I don't know if the cord on an actual unit has any adjustments for length, or is longer than the dummy unit. For my purposes, I believe this is probably enough given the height they would be installed at.
As far as I can tell it's designed to mount on an outside wall, not under a soffit. Poor design Google. What were you thinking ? I really like the idea of a floodlight camera, but if I cannot mount it under a soffit it's useless to me.
Exact same question. I'll be passing on these without the option for the horizontal installation. It's not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. Not sure if it'll work, but they do make angled junction boxes for traditional security cameras that'll buy you 20° or so. A good electrician might have a trick or two up there sleeves, but that might look ridiculous.
Came to ask the same question. I have asked on their Facebook page. They replied that it was mountable under a soffit, but I'm questioning the angle and cord like the rest of you.
What size breaker is best for new installation? 15amp?

Can you install this if you don’t have a grounding wire coming out of the junction box
I just did. I have a metal box in the wall and screwed the ground into a screw on that. No one is going to be touching the light with the breaker on anyway. I know some electrician in the comments will have a fit but there's not much that can be done on older homes
But would it work without the ground?
OK, I've installed it and the bulbs DO NOT appear to be user replaceable. Additionally, I can't add it to the Nest app?! I can't view the stream on a Nest Display or Chromecast?! What am I missing? Why is it labeled as a "Nest" product if it doesn't work with Nest products?

The bulbs will be LED/SMD so just like modern LED car headlight units. they won't be user serviceable. Regarding the Nest app, Google wants us all to use their own (currently rather more crappy) app and as such as restricted their latest generation of so called "smart" products so they'll only work with the Google Home app.
Personally I wouldn't mind this restriction too much IF their app offered the same level of functionality as the Nest app...but it doesn't, by comparison the Google Home app is currently 🐩💩 compared to the Nest app!
I was able to mount mine vertically. Follow the same instructions. The only differences are: Be careful which way you put the white mounting plate cover. There's an antitheft screw that has to match up with the direction the camera will face. Hanging from the s-hook will not work, just hold it with one hand and tighten the wire nut with the other, or get an extra hand or bungee to hold it up. Lastly, after setting up the camera to the app, go to the settings and rotate the camera 180 degrees.
Does anyone know if this product works with dual band frequency (my router currently broadcasts both 2.4 and 5.0 GHZ as a single WIFI) or will I have to split my WIFI into 2.4 and 5.0 GHZ?

@@madebygoogle As I live in Canada which there are some outdoor restrictions on the 5GHZ network, I will only be able to connect the Floodlight Cam to 2.4 GHZ. Right now my WIFI is dual band with band steering (so my devices can automatically connect to either depending on signal strength). In the past, I experienced outdoor cam issues from other brands which stubbornly required me to separate my network to 2.4 GHZ and 5.0 GHZ in order for it to connect to the "pure" 2.4 GHZ (i guess they did not recognize my WIFI was dual band). Would the Google Cam Floodlight have the same dual band issue? Would be a great help to know this!
@@darkmage728 you will probably want to use 2.4 either way as the signal will be stronger that 5Ghz

Can't checkout in the store.
I'm losing my mind trying to reinstall this floodlight cam after a network change. I've deleted it from my home app. Power cycled it and my phone. I don't have the QR code so am using the Setup Code alternative method using the code printed on the back of the camera. Every single time it drags through an extensive setup mode with cheery music - only to arrive at 'Something Went Wrong' after 8 minutes or so. The light on the device is green - does it think it is properly connected? Because it does not connect to my phone or account. I've done this 8 times now. I may need a straight jacket soon.

What if someone takes my camera?
I ended up buying one as I have all the other Nest stuff. NOT happy that it doesnt, work in the APP... But, I am getting used the the Google home. I bough this beacuse it said "wired." Installed my self, so I know that there is no issues. No 9 days later camera is blank on screen & says: Device offline because of an empty battery. Does Google exepct us to climb a ladder once a week to re-charge this camera??? & how do you even re-charger it (LOL) Nothing in the instructions on websiite...

I purchased but didn't realise it had no power lead like other cameras before. I plan to install this with a plug and cable. If i run 3 core (positive neutral and earth) can i connect the earth to the camera fixing?

I was told you can mount it underneath a soffit and it doesn’t look like I can record is too short for the camera in the camera shows upside down does anybody have any ideas?
Just installed. Everything works except that floodlights won't turn off. All settings are correct but lights won't turn off. Disappointed 😥

What is up with the hanging cord on the bottom side of the camera. Someone could just come cut that cord. Lame.

@@madebygoogle I have installed 4 of these as floodlight replacements. None of them will connect using the Google Home ap. I have 3 - 4 bars of wifi at all of the locations. It was much easier to install items via the Nest ap. Online help is useless. All it says is use the google home ap to connect the cameras. I will be returning these if I can't get them to connect. Using them just as a motion sensitive flood light defeats the main reason for replacing them.

I was hoping to add this to my collection of nest cams but I can't seem to get it to connect to my wifi. I tried to connect with the dual band but could not. I then disabled the 5ghz to allow the stronger signal of the 2.4ghz to pick it up... but no success. After spending three days of climbing a ladder to reset the camera and too many hours of watching the animated google home app trying to connect... I give up. This was just a waste of my time. I will be returning this setup tonight. Not being able to view it with the Nest app was the least of my worries. I'm so disappointed.
HI there, we're sorry to hear that. You could try moving your camera to the same room as the router. Also, try setting up your Nest Camera using another network or mobile hotspot and see if you'll get the same result. I keep getting battery alert. This video doesn’t mention anything about batteries.
I have the exact same problem! I only bough this because it said "wired..." 9 days later dead battery. Are we supposed to climb a ladder once a week to recharger camera? AND how do you even re-charge it?
@@hayburner_jr Have you found anything out? Went on vacation and WiFi connection went dead. Is it the battery? Haven’t had time to look at the issue yet. The green light is still on but the connection is lost.

I regret this product now since the Eufy floodlight Cam 2 Pro came out! I hope Nest makes something similar to this including a motorized floodlight, so we can stop getting the ladder in our garage to re-position the camera or the floodlight. Please add 4K, 12MP, 180-degree view, 24/7 recording, color night vision, and able to read small fonts in the day/night from far away.

@@MrSombraPR some people haven't signed up for Google or Gmail, they still use the old nest credentials.
You can migrate the nest app into the Google home app. Not a huge deal. These cameras are better and the future. If you didn't already know... Google purchased nest.. so that nest app isn't going to get a lot of updates. The Google home app will be the primary focus.
I’m assuming that you have to connect the light/cam to power first, as in get someone to hardwire it in. The instructions make it seem that you connect it first and then install it which is absurd. Other than that the video is nice.

Hey google, Instead of providing an annoying video that's difficult for me to try and follow along while I'm on top of a ladder 10ft in the air, how about you provide actual printed instructions, or at least a PDF, that I can review at my own pace.
Trying to mash a thumb into the tiny bar to jump around in the video is going to get someone killed when they slip and fall off a ladder.
Edit: Also. Google is a trillion dollar company. Would it hurt you guys to label the screws so that I know which ones are which?
Why not just affix the QR code sticker to the manual or box, I threw away my QR code after installing, now I’ve got a new WiFi router and have to climb 30 ft to get the product code. You made thing unnecessarily difficult. Things could be so much easier if you thought about things from the end users perspective.

Hiya, my Google Chrome brought me here... Ya see the thing is I don't want to be here. I don't want to see links to the latest google products when I open a new tab. It's one of your latest "features" to the browser...ya see, if my screen is just white save for some text, my eyes are immediately gonna dart for the text, and that's just a side effect of a life time's worth of reading. Oh, I have to mention this, I love how you guys have been making those links things like "Today is National *[Redacted]* Woman's Day" so that its difficult to *[Redacted]* about the feature ...its just deliciously *[Redacted]* , gotta give you props for being that low.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say there isn't anyway to turn it off. If anyone knows if there is please... I guess post a response but I'm not gonna read it. I havn't checked my notifications in months and rarely even visit this website anymore.

DO NOT BUT THIS if you have an existing nest camera architecture. This light does NOT work with the nest app. Only usable in the Google home app which is garbage in comparison. So now I have 5 cameras and a doorbell in nest app and this one camera all alone in my Google app. What a waste of time and money!
I have four IQ cameras and cannot get any of them to connect to my new router. It’s so frustrating. Misplace that qr code and you might as well throw this device in the recycle bin. Yes - I have tried the code on the bottom of the camera and it just does nothing. Ever. Avoid this product and I will be transitioning away from Google as fast as I can. Terrible product.

WARNING: Do not buy this product, you will have constant problems with video not be available, setup is difficult. I have invested so much money to try and fix these problems and it can't. To make things even worse, because google has overtaken the Nest (which was a third party product) it now does not support what you would expect like video in the browser. Buy a video camera with hardwired connects they are the only ones that will work as expected.
