Caitlin, I don't know how to tell you this, but Tiptoe is going to need a multistory home. What if picks up a chick on one of his walks--he is after all a chick magnet--and brings her home. Will need an elevator too.
To go along with his Hollywood look, gotta get those Ray-Ban teardrop sunglasses, as Tiptoe will be starring in the new movie, "Tiptoe, Secret Agent," where Tiptoe saves the world from being overgrown with flowers!!! 🥰

Do not get a tortoise like Tiptoe unless you are exactly like Caitlin Doran and her family. He deserves the world and they give it to him, but not everyone can. So look to Caitlin as the benchmark. It's so wonderful watching Tiptoe but even more watching how much you all adore and are in love with him.
Caitlyn has a house and family to help care for Tiptoe. Many people get exotic pets without knowing what they're into. A fake tortoise is a better choice for those who can't care for a real one

Your idea of planting clover sounds great. It would keep his area cooler like real grass only nicer and just in case, should be ok in case he wants a bite sometimes. 💙

I would suggest rubber mat flooring for outdoors. Or yoga mats too. To avoid TT to chew on it use dull colors
Im so glad you have decided to share! This is fantastic advice on how to correctly take care of a tortoise if anyone else were to be interested. This is a great place to start to get a feel for the accommodations someone would need to make! It also warms my heart to see an animal being so well taken care of and loved as much as Tiptoe. ❤❤❤

I watched a snapping turtle as big as tip toe climb my neighbors fence. I had no idea they could do that. Keep that big boy in! Love you both!

He obviously loves you so much and wants to be with you. This is such an amazing story. You could place planters on other side of fence with plants he can eat that would grow through the fence. I think he needs a little more sensory stuff.

I literally JUST got a new hutch for my 13 year old sulcata. She outgrew her last home she was in for 10 years. It was actually just a refurbished dog house that I insulated and put a pig blanket in to keep warm in the Arizona "winter" nights. I found a fabricator on Etsy (BC Fabrications) who created THE most awesome hutch. It's insulated, has ability a GFI plug so you can heat it with a lamp and it has a large barn door. They do custom builds so you can get the dimensions that will fit your cutie's needs. It's great and I think (and hope) it will last her for another 10-15 years...or longer cause it's huge. That may be a good option for ya. Tiptoe is a cutie! 🥰

Love how you are upgrading his enclosure! The hand print idea is a great one. Maybe, before you put up one of the next sheet you lay it flat, have him walk through paint and then onto the panel. Apply polyurethane once done to preserve his foot prints. I also recommend doing something to seal the edges of the plywood otherwise the will delaminate over time.

Hi Caitlin, I have a Sulcata Tortoise about the house. I bought a very big dog house, had it insulated off the ground with a small ramp, I made it super cozy with coconut husk ,reptile dirt some hay as a bed form as well as ceramic heating with a heating thermostat. A lot of work but totally worth it My tortoise is very happy it gets to burrow for bed .PS Got to clean it daily though 🐢🐢🐢🐢

The hands mural is a good idea . Have you considered going to home Depot or Lowe's to look at sheds ? This way you can have an idea of how to build tiptoe 's new house by seeing the width and length . Plus see the height inside.

There is almost never a dull moment is there! I believe your mental health, which you mentioned in an earlier video is better since you have animal to take care of. I am is much better since I have a dog who is always happy and playful. My sister was right when she suggested it to me. Also, I am autistic and should not be thinking about only my self😊

Paint the fence cream or light grey and definitely do the hand and paw prints, you could maybe make them into flowers. Could you make a slightly larger version of his current house for his new house, the shape seems good or do one like a yurt 🛖 so that way you get the taller roof.

Hello Catlin, there are rubberized coating you can put on, you might want to check it out.
The Home Depot has premade sheds you could customize for Tiptoe. Something with keeps it cooler in summer & warmer in winter.
Some UA-cam's have things for their Tortis to climb to keep them in shape.
Kamp Keenan has a lot of Tiptoes. He has an incline for the tortoises and then water inside.
You do a great job with Tiptoe 😎.

SUper cool solutions! Particularly the hidden panels on the side of the house! Perhaps some cement and rebar as a sort of cage around the gas line might protect that pipe. He'd still climb against ti but he would be unable to shove and snap it maybe. Him having this much room to stomp around and live outside is just lovely. The toughest groundcover I know that grows well in SoCall is a grass called St. Augustine, but my worry would be you spending enough money to put down enough soil and sod for it to establish and then the ol bulldozer just rips it up. They're so tough!
That plywood looks so cool 😎 love it. There are gas pipe boxes you can buy for cheap. Tiptoe can climb on it but it won't affect the gad line.
Love how tiptoes got things to do and places to go! Maybe one of the dog mansions would be great for him as a new house!

This is crazy, imagine in 30 years when I am an old man, I will still be able to watch tiptoe and he will only be fifty. When I am on my deathbed, Tiptoe will still be just finishing middle age. Caitlin, he will outlive you. Imagine in 50 years when you are an old lady, and you have 1 million subs, and Tiptoe will still be around!
I would enclose the gas line, just to be safe. Incorporate handprints into a landscape mural. More enrichment toys.
I say, ,make him a Zen Garden using small colourful stones. What falls into the basin just can be put back into the stone yard. Your ornamental tree will look like it was made for it too. You can put a huge rock in there for him to climb on and small patches of grass that you can put in trays, when your boy is done eating it. My cat likes to eat wheat grass and it grows fast and is sweet for my cat to eat You can get these trays at local drink shops that offer green drinks too. You can put these trays all along the fence or around the tree in shapes too.

For the new house I would build it out of cinder block, about 4 feet tall. I would use the same kind of roof you now use. He is a powerful animal so the cinder block could handle him and it is a great insulator against cold and heat when used with heat lamps. You could even keep the floor as dirt. Hope this helps
You and your family are the best! The way you take care of tip toe is amazing. I would do the same for any of my animals. People sometimes don't realize how much goes into raising any type of animal and it's a commitment, however long that may be. The new fence looks really nice. I love the idea you came up with the painting on it, so cute and it fits him. How do your neighbors like him? I know some people are amazed when they see him out walking too. Hey Caitlan, For the next Tiptoe house, or the one you have now, consider this. Ask Grandpa to line the studs with reflective foil. It can be applied several different ways. It wil maintain inside room temperature better than anything else you can consider. This idea was invented by NASA to make rockets safe for passengers. It is being used in new homes and retrofit remodels, now. I would also spend $100 on a good quality bathroom exhaust fan. Get a timer and let it turn on for 15 minutes several time each day. The inside air needs to be removed with fresh outside air on a regular cycle, for his health. Good luck with Tiptoe.
Home depot has this Australian grass that can take the heat. It doesn't get real high so no mowing
I'm doing the same thing with my baby! But she's only 4 lbs right now 😂
I was thinking of doing some sod instead of substrate. That way it's more natural and she will be able to munch on the grass! Also saves a ton of money with timothy hay 😊

I've seen Clover lawns that look beautiful and they seem really hardy, so that might be the go, depends if Tiptoe would just eat his way through the whole thing tho.
If you grew ivy or something up the wood panels to make it less bare would he eat that too or try to?

Maybe you could have local kids participate with their hand prints with a donation to a local charity like an animal shelter.
For the house either you can rebuild or with is house now clad inbetween the spares with sheets of polystyrene for warmth then clad over like you’ve done with plywood 👍👍👍

Grass, why not grass in those areas? You had purchased grass once, I don't know how that came out though. Are you putting some kind of top over the plywood on the fence? Is the plywood painted with a water sealant?

Tiptoe needs natural turf like you said no cement no artificial grass. Clover is actually great. His house needs a Muriel painted on it. So many designs ideas.
I just love Tiptoe. He's so cute and really looks like he's smiling, Plus he's really nosy and has to see and taste everything. He doesn't miss a thing. He goes where ever you go and wants to see what you have. Does he ever close himself up in his shell like some turtles do?? His shell probably weighs a LOT. Maybe if you contact a Zoo keeper they can take him in to weigh him. I think they weigh the really big animals there. Was he a baby when you got him? How did he get the name tiptoe?

I got an idea I sure did a long time ago too.... but......
I was thinking painting African miral. On something for him to look at... How About an African sunset... With elephants off in the distance and the big Bao- baab tree... With a few gazelles and Impalas... Hanging out... And a monkey up in the tree too.
And here's an idea.... For tiptoes walking and living quarters....
Farmers don't let their cattle just stay in one field..... They move them to another field and block the old one off so they can't go back there so the grass can heal.... If you found out where there is some real tough grass with clover in it... Let it establish itself real good.. that is let It grow and become real tough grass... I mean durable grass... And once every two weeks he gets to go there... And then where he was gets blocked off....
And now for one more idea... Over and above greenhouses.... In nurseries... They have these uv-blocking cloth net types of things.... And they will not let water through them...... This could help cut down on heat... Radiating from the sun .
The hand idea is fine if you use muted colors. Bright colors will attract him to try and climb it even more.

If you had some green bushes along side plywood fence so Tiptoe can do back scratches with , and also takes his mind off climbing fence ,, bushes he doesn't care to eat, and wouldn't be harmful to him if he did take a bite 🐢🏡🌲🌲🌲
I don’t know how anything about tortoise poop or how easy it is to clean up, but I would think that part of the decision on the right substrate would have take that into consideration.

I thought it might be nice to paint scenes from Tiptoe's native environment. He might not recognize it since he's lived with you his whole life but it might work to stimulate his visual senses.
Will he get slivers in his little feet if he tries to climb? Is the plywood smooth or coated in a sealant? Just curious?
the texture is somewhat grainy but I did a few trial runs running my hands up and down and it was perfecto. I worry about his little toe nails getting caught on things for suuuure too
@@caitlinandtiptoe Mama mindset, we run through every possible scenario in our minds. I think you should keep his original house, since your Grandpa built it with you, and I think you should just add like a little sun-room. Like a solarium. I think his little house is so darling.
Also, do you think tiptoe would wear like custom made little boots? I wonder if he would tolerate any foot covering.
