  • Firefox Quantum, a redesigned, re-written and faster browser, has been just released.
    If you have not heard about this Mozilla’s project, it is a completely new Firefox Browser that is, as claimed by Mozilla, is often faster that Google Chrome. And as Firefox has always been known for it is still lighter on memory usage.
    In this video, I will quickly overview the new design.
    Try to explain what changed under the hood of Firefox.
    And perform several benchmarks and real life tests to find out whether Firefox Quantum is indeed faster and lighter than Google Chrome

    Just waitin' for this! Thanks for uploading! But the numbers notwithstanding, I found Quantum equal, if not faster, than Chrome. Sometimes, it is slightly faster. And it plays my Amazon prime videos way better than Chrome.
    I have a feeling that these browsers are very much subject to hardware. I mean they are not universally faster or slower in all systems. I am using browsers since their inception, and noticed that this hardware-dependence is evident all the time. Some browsers are fast in some machines and slow in others. 20 years on, I am still waiting for that hardware-agnostic universally fast browser. But overall, browsers have become much better now, and Quantum is a step towards a brighter future.

    for the length of your video, i had it playing with Chrome and Firefox Quantum, and below are the results from taskmgr:
    Chrome -> ~5,5% CPU usage, ~1050 MB RAM usage, 18 processes open;
    Firefox Quantum -> ~5% CPU usage, ~770 MB RAM usage, 5 processes open;
    Since it is something new, the new design just needs us to get used to it as well as the new add-ins to be compatible.
    I use Chrome and Firefox, but the new Firefox receives a very good thumbs up!
    Great Video though :)

    Don't know, but on my distro (Debian 9) and hardware (nvidia based) I have to manually enable hardware acceleration in Firefox which makes it waaaayyy faster! (about:config and set "layers.acceleration.force-enabled" to true)

    Thank you for the review. I have noticed Firefox is in the Updates but I haven't downloaded it yet -- too conservative, I suppose! How do think it compares with Pale Moon; I have been quite impressed with that.
    It's good to know you can go back to the old FF if you need to.
    Good video as always!

    Nice to see at least one guy, that doesn't buy into braindead hype, but actually take the time to do some reseach and benchmarking... by the way, you use arch linux... are you sure it is faster than Windows 10? Any benchmarking here?

      Using adblock or ublock is great, but I believe the content provider loses out advertising money when we use them. I disable ublock for providers I support, like ALU.

    I use Firefox when i'm focussed simply on secure browsing with NoScript enabled, but i'm finding i use Iridium and Vivaldi more and more (both being Chrome forks).
    Sadly, i never thought i'd see the day i was barely using Firefox, but that day has been and passed.

    Where Firefox Quantum really shines is when you have dozens (or even over a hundred) tabs open. Chrome will keep spinning up new processes for new tabs, but Firefox will limit the number of processes.

    A very thorough test, thank you so much for this. But I am not sure speed should mean so much in 2018 when CPU's are i7 and everyone has 16GB memory.

  • @TheStigma

    I've been on stable channel and didn't even know about this until it suddenly dropped - but damn, I'm impressed.
    I'm the sort of user who run multiple windows with dozens of tabs on each, so pretty much as heavy load as you can get - and the performance increases in terms of feel are definitely evident in quantum. I used to stick to Firefox for the top tier addon support, but now feels top tier in performance too. Rare to get these sorts of major updates where you can actually feel the difference in day-to-day use and not just benchmarks.
    The blue tabs are the only questionable thing (really eels like the marketing deparment insisted the new version needed a visual cue for people to notice) - but this is obviously very easy to change so ... not really a complaint.

    Hello ALU ! You should have done your tests with several tools: vmstat, mpstat, sar and top. You haven't shown the CPU usage. You should also do the speed test from different sites. You did forget to launch videos in several tabs and see how the browsers react.
    Too many biases in your review. Do plenty of tests and after a week or better a month come back with the results !
    I prefer Firefox by far for several reasons. The most important one being what they did already for years for the Linux community !
    And as someone else pointed it out in his comments analyze all the settings in about:config and proceed by trials and errors until you find the optimal settings !
    Best regards,
    Serge

    Unfortunately this Firefox Quantum is worse than Chrome in terms of memory usage.
    I was looking for an alternative web browser to Chrome as it was consuming a lot of memory and my memory usage would be near full when I check the Performance tab in Windows 7 Task Manager. Granted, I opened many many tabs while using Chrome.
    So I tried Firefox Quantum in the last two days. Unfortunately even opening half as many tabs as I did with Chrome, I can already see that my memory usage is near full after just five hours of using Firefox Quantum when I check the Performance tab in Windows 7 Task Manager.
    Oh well, looks like I have to return to using Chrome once again.

    • @larsvassenjansen1651

      You might wanna try Iridium or Vivaldi if you want Chrome forks that gives: (1) all the speed of Chrome, (2) all the addon capability of Firefox (via Chrome Store), AND (3) without the insidious spyware telemetry of Chrome.
      I use both and barely use the new Firefox (i stayed with FF 47.0.2 and have no intention of ever upgrading to later versions, as they all kill or cripple my favorite addons).

    I do like Firefox Quantum's speed upgrade over v.56 however, I learned that a LOT of the extensions I loved and made "my firefox" personal is no longer available. I didn't care about speed all that much but firefox had so much flexibility and customization. FireFox Quantum just stripped everything, the speed is great but at the sacrification of my add-ons, is just so horrible. I just downgraded back to v.56 until those extensions are supported on Quantum otherwise it's a horrible end for being a Firefox user.

  • @FernandoSantucci

    Who use Firefox isn't because the performance or any other worries, but because privacy concerns. I think it's smart thinking a little about it! However Firefox manage keep a good balance between performance and resources consume, mainly now with secure and reliable multi-threading programming of RUST language making use of multi-core CPUs.
    Chrome is an excelent browser whether you allow your private data to be raped for a corporation with nothing in return. I don't think this is very clever at all!
    Safari is reserved for an exclusive caste of people willing to shell out three months of wage to buy a fancy tag with the Apple brand to be snobby with your friends. There's nothing wrong with being a consumerist, it's your right, it's your money!

    I prefer Firefox for the same reasons as you... but I'm afraid that with the webextensions, it will lose a lot of its interest compared to Chrome derivatives. Some of my favorites extensions won't be able to work with the new version and they will make my browsing experience less pleasant (FireGestures, Private Tab, Session Manager, FindBar Tweak, ...).

    Well... when I updated firefox, all my extentions have become incompatible. I use firefox for privacy and because I love Mozilla but for personalisation and add-ons too. With Firefox Quantum my config for getting a minimal ui for firefox got obsolete (simple white X and Hide Tab Bar With One Tab). I also experimented a lot of bugs. For exemple with drop-down menu on few websites, they close directly after opened. I'll re-install firefox quantum after many updates. I think it's still a beta for now

      I still stand by that despite those benchmarks, like you said what can you really extrapolate from that? You can just feel how fast it is by using it to see how much of an improvement it is, if you can't tell, then maybe it's just your system that sucks! Really an i3? i7 MINIMAL or GTFO! and only 8 gigs ram, that's pushing it by todays standards, 16GB minimal, more than that is better and recommended! Test it on a real powerful rig, and maybe different ones and different benchmarks and then you could be more conclusive if you really want to be for sure!

    Why all the hassle to download a tar.gz, copy a path, etc...??? why not just create a .deb 64bit and .rpm 64bit installer just like google did with chrome. I am not even going to try installing it. I said this five years ago PLEASE DO LIKE CHROME create a deb compatible, and an rpm compatible in addition to the .tar.gz binary. Believe me experienced Linux users and new Linux users will appreciate it and for sure will enrich the user experience. Thank you so much for the test/review ALU, This is not a critic to ALU, I am just really upset with Mozilla!!! ugh!

      Not every distro uses Debian or RPM packages. If it were just deb and rpm packages, many would have a problematic time. Of course in Arch you can use debtap or use user repositories but results may vary.

      @jairusan 6 років тому +1

      ki2ne I hope you are kidding right? You must be stock in 1990s just by checking distrowatch.com you will easily confirm that deb and rpm Linux distributions represents the largest number of Linux users. This is so easy to figure out. Anyway, good luck!

    • @cldream
      @cldream 6 років тому

      Jair Bolivar I NEVER said distros using Debian and RH packaging were in the minority. However, pushing towards a format that is locked to one particular platform is not good as it limits your audience/userbase. I prefer a packaging that's widely supported. If you want distro-specific ones, they can be included alongside with the tarballs, and I would be okay with that. However, that single-format idea is like saying, "Oops, sorry - our app doesn't support your system. Meanwhile, switch to ones that we do support".
      Also, I do know of Distrowatch, and Mint's plastered over the top ranks. I'm not a neanderthal as you think I am. 😅
      According to Distrowatch themselves, the rankings are based on popularity, which they explained are counted by page visits.
      Finally, I'm sure with apps like this, it should be in the repos already. If not, check out the user repos or build your own. (most distros have docs on how to make your own Debian/RPM packages)

    • @jairusan
      @jairusan 6 років тому +1

      Dude, I am really trying to stay patient and polite with you, I use GNU/Linux to be absolutely correct since 1998 I know that Gentoo and some other linux distros require to compile applications from source/binary files, unless is absolutely needed I will not waste my time. I did not say ONLY deb and rpm packages if you check the google chrome page they have versions for everything you want including deb and rpm, go to the mozilla site, you have ONLY the tar.gz version to download, and last about your comment >> "However, pushing towards a format that is locked to one particular platform is not good as it limits your audience/userbase." How is google chrome doing today? following the idea I proposed to Mozilla org five years ago? which one is the most popular browser today in windows, mac AND even Linux. I am done with this discussion, I let the readers read and make their choice.

    • @cldream
      @cldream 6 років тому +1

      Well then - I didn't see that. Sorry about the confusion as I jumped to conclusions about your position. I follow a similar policy with installation - if there's a package already, then I would use that in place of manual building (unless something else takes precedence, e.g. a feature on the prebuilt packages do not have a feature I want)

    Firefox was ALWAYS better than Chrome, but this new version's UI is a fucking trainwreck. They've been making it more and more like Chrome since version 38, unfortunately, and now this one breaks essential stuff like Classic Theme Restorer. So, I'm sticking with FF55 until I can have CTR to give me a good UI again.

      Also, when Firefox started deliberately killing compatibility with great addons like NoScript and many others, i began to quickly lose interest and trust in Mozilla.
      If Mozilla are trying to send Firefox the way of the dodo, than they're sure as hell going about it the right way.

    • @ShinGallon
      @ShinGallon 6 років тому

      Admittedly it is better than Australis was (holy gods that thing was ugly as sin) but I still hate how much more difficult it is in Quantum to do simple things like put the tabs below the address bar (where they belong). I shouldn't have to edit chrome.css to do something that in Classic Theme Restorer was a simple mouse click. I'm angry that Mozilla seems determined to remove as much of my control over the browser's interface as they possibly can.
      All that being said I'd still use it before putting Chrome on my computer. Hell I'd use IE before using Chrome, at least IE knows that tabs are supposed to be below the address bar...

    Firefox still have screen tearing issues, not surprising it did badly on the graphic test.
    I prefer Opera and Vivaldi, i have perfect graphics and speed too !

      No it doesn't, ditch your shitty plugins and USE IT! What else do you need, an adblocker maybe a video downloader, they work fine for me in quantum! Just get it and get better plugins!

      Okay besides it being actually better, Mozilla also is fighting for Net Neutrality to stay in place, you can't HONESTLY say the same thing about the makers of chromium! If you could, there'd be a banner at the top of our page right now on this site (and up until the date set)! They aren't doing that even though they could easily, so that tells me they want to actually repeal it while at the same time making people believe that they want to keep it, when the person that tries to disprove it pulls up a blog post where they say they support net neutrality THAT NO ONE HAS FUCKING SEEN!

    Quantum is easily the best browser out right now.
    Not only is it faster - it uses half the resources that Chrome does.
    Chrome is like a bloated whale.

    What kind of stuff are you talking about. Firefox is slower and uses more power for cpu than Google.On average the cpu usage is from 13 -30% more. I have a six core amd cpu and 16gigs of memory. Linux 18.2I Just use Firefox for downloading news and recording movies. wish Google would let me record movies.

      If they would do, you would have the same amount of CPU and RAM usage - more funktions, more overhead. That's why quantum cut support for old extensions.

      Hello marc ! Install youtube-dl. After installation type as a normal user: youtube-dl -F URLofthevideoyouwanttodownload and then you can choose the best format for you by typing youtube-dl -f N URLofthevideoyouwanttodownload replacing N by the number of one of the formats displayed by the first command.
      Then you'll be able to watch the video in VLC or SMPlayer for instance. If you are not satisfied with the available formats. Pick one from youtube-dl -F and then install ffmpeg and read this article on how to convert videos:
      www.labnol.org/internet/useful-ffmpeg-commands/28490/
      Best regards,
      Serge

      Serge You can use it with mpv as well, with the quality settings "--ytdl-format" option directed to youtube-dl. SMPlayer has an issue with my laptop that it doesn't let me set quality and on some videos it will default to 4K and it stutters really bad on it whereas 1080p it does exceptionally well.
