  • In this short video, we will go over the fact that solar panels will naturally get dirty and why that is bad. I will demonstrate how much power can be lost with a quick before and after test. Don't make a huge financial investment and then ignore maintenance! #solarpanel #solarpower #solarenergy

Out of the 5 years of having rooftop solar, I have only cleaned them twice and during those times it was quite arid that year. Definitely checking on them twice a year to see if they need to be cleaned or not works best for me. The early spring and scattered summer rainfall is sufficient enough to keep the dust buildup at bay.
One suggestion if have panel(s) that are flat mounted, a ceramic coat treatment will help keep the dirt from sticking to the glass and it makes it easier to rinse off with a garden hose.

Yes there are coatings that you can use that will help to avoid buildup. And the rain does help with dust. But it isn't enough to remove the hazy film that will accumulate, especially in suburbs or cities. And bird crap.

if you are installing the panels at the proper angle, then you may not need to clean more than once or twice a year, unless you live in a particularly dusty area.
of course, the flatter topped rooves like in the video are bad for this, and likely need that 4x a year treatment, as the rainwater cannot trickle off them as easily.

There weren't any flat top roofs in the video. Standard 5/12 pitch or so. The only panel that was flat was the solar panel on the back of my truck.
But, yes, if you are in an environment with a lot of dust then cleaning more often is necessary.

Normally I use dish soap. I have heard some people debate that it may leave a film behind. I haven't had that problem. And many other sources say the same thing. Some sort of mild detergent or cleanser is fine. And a non-abrasive cloth.

    Overall solar is a loser.
