    AR seems great for designers, architects, engineers, surveyors and others in similar fields but not so great for the consumer population. It's not really solving a problem for consumers.
    Jameson Detweiler's positives for AR seem weak. He says it will remove the glass between us and our instagram. I get what he wants to achieve but he says that it needs to be designed in a way that is safe and secure and doesn't invade privacy, but the technology by its nature is invasive.

      Yelp's app has had the monocle AR feature for years and consumers find it helpful for travel, etc. AR's use is quite vast... Example: imagine how many travelers would love to find their gate and restroom faster by just hovering the app and the requested located appear? Theme park apps already use it for crowd separation visuals, so it's place in the every day life aspect is quite vast.

      @ltraina3353 5 років тому +3

      mxchic05 agreed. And it’s almost surely going to be in the wrong hands, i.e. companies looking to make a profit. Corporations and companies exist to make money, and protecting individuals isn’t necessarily conducive to that goal. History shows us that companies will protect their bottom line before considering the ethics of their actions. And government is all too willing to let that happen. They are swayed by money and power, and big corporations and the ultra-wealthy are the ones with money and power. We as individuals don’t have powerful lobbyists to protect our interests, so I don’t have a lot of faith that things would go well for us.

      You're right, VPNs won't help much in AR's case. But Phil also had invasion of privacy as a topic, which VPNs protect us from in today's world. Yes - VPNs don't relate to future AR tech, but Phil was simply applying the VPN to a more present form of privacy invasion.

    There was an app that I used when I first an iPhone roughly 6 years ago. It was a keyboard that was over a live feed of my back camera. I could text and walk without fearing I would run into or trip over anything. I stopped using it after I realized it drained my battery. So in addition to all the privacy fears, another problem is the increased/continual usage would severely impact the battery life of a device.

    I am an AR Developer. Currently we only use these point clouds that the camera helps us to get. We do not use any sort of images from the camera, that is not the output we receive in the code. We just get the location of these points. The way we work it's impossible to be able to identify anything but shapes, so privacy in that matter is not a worry.

    As a person who is studying Cloud Computing this is an amazing video. I think the deciding factor for this will be the quality of service that AR will provide and if people will deem it worth losing some or in worse case scenario all of their privacy. IMO its inevitable, that this will take place and the growth of such technologies will rise exponentially with the advancement of quantum processor. The professor who mentioned a dystopian future as in black mirror knows exactly how dangerous having such private data out in the public.
