- We take some time to show you some of the beginning stages of teaching your dog or puppy to heel. There are other methods that we also use but it depends on how much time we have to train and the dog's individual ability. This is the down and dirty way to get basic "heeling" where the dog learns to walk next to you on your left side. There are other more advanced methods to get a more focused competition style heeling but we only have Bentley for 3 weeks so we can't afford to focus all of our lessons on the more intricate and time consuming methods to get a focused heel. We can always come back to it and build upon where we started. Check back in with us in another week or so and you will see how far his heel has developed. Stay tuned for more!

I have said it before in different videos. This guy is amazing with dogs. I live in Mississippi and in the future plan on getting a new dog. If this guy will help me I will bring my dog to him to train. I really fill u can't go wrong with him. If u need someone to help u with your dog I would recommend him to anyone. Keep in mind I don't know this guy or have ever talked to him before. I don't get anything for writing this. This is just my opinion. How awesome would that be to bring your dog out and have them listen. Awesome job guy keep up the great work and thanks for the video.

These videos are truly well done. I always start shape training and challenging pups as soon as possible. They are little sponges and their intelligence craves it. Great tips. See how happy these dogs are? Anyone who thinks this man isn't an outstanding trainer needs their head examined.

Oh, you have a Mal! Great breed, if you have the time and ability to put in for their mental and physical exercise. Anybody that is looking into getting a Malinois should do some deep research on the breed and requirements before buying/adopting one. They are great dogs, but they require a lot of time to burn their mental and physical energy, or they can overflow with energy and shred your house.

Tank and I are an ever growing service dog training team! It’s incredible how far we have come since I made this post and I credit Garret and his channel for much of it.
Just this past October I had a serious fall and I don’t know how I would have gotten through it had I not already invested countless hours into working with Tank.

Just got this 18 months mix Chihuahua from the rescue place. Rowdy little bugger😅. Been applying what I learn from your videos and I see improvements thanks to him being food motivated. I am still having trouble with the heeling and barking. I would like to see you make a video on how to train and deal with Chihuahuas. They are rowdy by nature 😂👍.

I may eventually get to a point where I'm popular enough to travel to different training venues as a guest instructor for civilian dog training. Garret has online courses at DIYK9.com. Part of his courses cover how to increase your dogs food drive for training, and his leashed course goes into training your dog when they simply refuse to train with food, toys, praise, love, affection, etc. Luckily I didn't really need that. Our older dog wasn't food motivated to train when we adopted out puppy, but once she saw the puppy getting food for spending time training, the older dog was lining up and eager to train.
My puppy is the opposite and has high energy ! She runs ahead and pulls all the time

Both of their girls are adorable. This was over 3 years ago, so this one here has been learning and has a good idea about dog training herself. Garret advanced to producing online dog training videos which are at DIYK9.com. These come with weekly or monthly online training and Q&A sessions, and in one his daughter was sitting nearby eating a snack. The dog he was training wasn't responding to the training tactic Garret was using so he was going to switch to another training method to see if the dog would work better, then paused and he asked his daughter what she thought he should try next. She thought for a moment and made a suggestion, and it worked perfectly. Such a proud pappa, and as a man who is a father first, I love watching him with his kids and how he always makes sure they know they are the high priority, no matter what he is doing. That’s what I call attention healing for for pups ! I start at about 16 weeks 4 months ! Up til than my pups are on long ck cord ! If they have a dime I let them spend it , responsible healing about 6 months ! Depending on each dog’s maturity level !
Really awesome work! I’ve been working with my 6 month of labradoodle and will 100% try this method. Do you think indoors would be okay? We live on a busy road, training her to focus and grasp the concept might be easier inside when it’s quiet?

Great video. I have been watching a lot of your content lately in preparation and a refresher in training for our new Doberman on the way in two more days!! Is there a clicker you would recommend? I think one with a finger ring may be easier to manage. Didn’t see any on your Amazon page.
I was looking yesterday at Garret's Amazon affiliate page for this clicker you were talking about and it's not there. I believe it is the Micca Clicka or something like that. It took some digging, but I was able to order one from overseas. Yeah, not a quick and easy purchase, but worth it. I love the finger fob for the e-collar myself for the same reason. It keeps the clicker/fob on your finger for easy access without tying up your hand, so you can also hold a leash or treats or toys in that hand for training. Garret likes the E-Collar Technologies e-collars and he has that as the training tool in this Unleashed course training people how to train their dogs to be fully off leash at DIYK9.com. His courses go from puppy training to walking perfectly on leash to fully off leash. His "Unleashed" course for e-collar training comes with a 20% discount on an E-Collar Technolgies collars. Does it matter if the dog heals on the left side or right side?
Do you have any suggestions on how to train a puppy (my staffy is 13 weeks) not to eat everything from the ground outside? When we take a walk outside she is very interested in anything except me. Even if I have some treats.. 😅

Hello. After the dog is grown up and executes the commands successfully should we continue to reward him with treats or we can switch to verbal "Good boy" and little petting him because it is not always convenient to carry treats in you?
Yes, absolutely, we recommend to phasing out the treats to avoid that kind of dependency.

@@newera3757 you do ANY gesture you want. It's your dog, you can slap yourself and train your dog to sit with that gesture. So make up your own if you want. I know someone who does the awkward gesture of pointing the finger up for the dog to sit. I use the clinched fist for the sit command. So do what you want. Like the trainer said, the bigger the better.

Works extremely well. After just 15minutes of doing this, my 4 month old pup has improved MASSIVELY. I do have 1 question though. How do you deal with distractions? He does it very well with no people/dogs around but as soon as one or both of those come into play he becomes a playing machine again and just pulls the leash because he wants to go to them.
What I’ve learned is to just be consistent. Younger phases are easily distracted. Once he’s distracted training is on break and then once you have his attention again it’s back on to training. Stay consistent and when he’s older and more focused that training will stick.

Garret has in-depth training on everything from puppy training to fully off-leash training with an e-collar at DIYK9.com. Dogs learn in an environment. The dog may perform perfectly in your kitchen, but if you move to the backyard next, it's almost like starting over from scratch. Move again down the road and it's almost like starting over again, but each time it will get a little easier until your dog realizes you don't just sit in the kitchen, backyard, or on the street, but they should sit anywhere and everywhere. Each new place will bring new distractions, and you need to work with the dog and guide the dog through each step. The obedience course will work wonders for a dog with positive only food rewards. Leashed is a more advanced course that helps you guide your dog when food rewards aren't getting the job done. Once the dog learns what leash pressure is and how to turn it off, feather light leash pressure can guide your dog into position, and if not, you can provide corrective measures with the leash. If you want to take your dog to the fully off leashed level, that is also at DIYK9.com. How in-depth? The Unleashed (e-collar) course is over 30 hours long. The obedience and leashed courses are similar, although I've not added up the time in each course.
What is the prong collar that you primerly use? Have a pittie that responds to a prong collar....?
Check out DIYK9.com for Garret's full courses. But to answer your question, Herm Sprenger is the only prong collar worth getting. It's a high-quality German made product. For the life of me I can't figure out why so many pet stores do not carry this line because I can't find a trainer that recommends any other prong collar besides HS. They do not cost that much more, but they are made of high quality metal. They do not contain nickel which many dogs are allergic to, which is one of the reasons you see cheap collars with rubber covers - to protect the dogs from the nickel content. These rubber boots also pad the sharp corners where the ends of the prongs are cut, but HS collars have points that are rounded over instead of cut at a sharp 90 degree angle. You can find them at his Amazon affiliate store linked in his text above, or here in my response. Look under the "dog training equipment". There are several HS options here. Most prefer the collars with the quick connect. The leashes he uses are here as well, with the most loved being the 6 ft. biothane leash. You should always pair your prong collar with another collar. Look at the biothane martingale style collars. Many dogs can slip out of a collar by turning around and pulling, so the only option is to cinch down the collar so it won't come off. The issue here is the collar has to be tight 100% of the time. The martingale style collars have a chain that slips easily. When the dog isn't pulling, the collar is hanging with plenty of slack. When the dog pulls, the collar cinches down so the dog can't slip out, and as soon as the dog stops pulling, the collar releases and has ample slack again. You want to double hook the prong collar and martingale collar to be safe. Prong collars are amazing, but they will eventually fail. It's not a matter of if, it's just a matter of when, so you want the second collar in place for when this happens. Knowing this, I'm OCD about my prong collar. Every time I put it on I hold it up by one end to make sure the collar isn't twisted when I put it on, and I can see if any links are loose. Even doing this, I checked the collar and all was well, then I put the collar on my dog and it promptly fell off. I figured I just didn't fully latch the quick connect, but nope, that was secure. The prong came loose. Depending on the size of your dogs neck, you may need to expand the size of the collar. With bigger dogs, it's often cheaper to buy 2 collars than buy sets of prongs to extend to the required length, so look at both options. Thanks for your videos. I’ve been training my dog using the methods you’ve shown, they work great but sometimes I forget to take treats out and he walks right at my feet looking for food constantly as he’s used to be rewarded while waking to heel. Should I always take treats , will the dog lose interest if you start to not reward everytime?
Check this out at DIYK9.com. These are Garret's online and in-depth training courses. Garret covers when and how to phase out food rewards. You don't want to have to reward your dog 100% of the time when training (don't pay for failed reps unless paying for approximation on something new) or on a walk, so phasing out food rewards is a necessary step to phase out that dependency. However, do not fade out food rewards 100% forever either. Your dog is "working" for its food, and as you would, if your boss stopped paying you and expected you to keep working for free, eventually you'd lose interest in working. So will your dog. If you go to Garret's affiliate page in the text above, or I'll link it here, look under the dog training equipment and he has linked a quality food training pouch. It has a hinged opening that will hold itself open, but with a gentle push, it will snap shut. That was great for me because when my dog was a puppy, it was easier to do a lot of the training while sitting down on the floor with her, which meant I often had to tap the bag with my arm to stop her from just diving face first into the treat bag for her kibble. www.amazon.com/shop/americanstandarddogtraining. He trains you to train your dog, and with this knowledge, you can train your dog (and any future dogs) and know when and how to correct your dog instantly so your dog doesn't regress in its training as can happen when someone else trains your dog.

how do you determine the finish part from heel? because to me they look the same except one you are moving and the other stationary
Dealers' choice. If I'm on a walk and I want my dog to fall in line with me while walking, I use the heel command. If I'm standing still and I want my dog to come into that position while I'm standing still, I use the finish command to bring the dog to me. My dog will come to me and put her head near my thigh, then rotate her hips around until she's in line with me and in a sit position and focused on me. You gave the answer in your question. They look the same, but one is moving and one is stationary. Dogs learn visually, and although both results look the same, they are visually different to the dog. You can use the heel command for both if you like, or heel and finish, or "banana" as Garret said. Some people pair both to the same verbal command, some do not. Garret goes into these in deep detail in his courses at DIYK9.com. It starts with a free 4-hour course to introduce you to Garret and his past experience, what the different training types are, etc.

What kind of treats do you use
Royal Canine, various sizes for different sized dogs. It's easier to manage because the kibble is in larger chunks that can be held without dropping versus most dog kibble is tiny and easy to drop. When you drop food while training, the dog disengages with you and starts looking for the free food on the ground. As a trainer, you want the dogs attention to be on you as much as possible. Your vet can tell you which dog food they recommend for your dog. Royal Canine isn't cheap, so I had to figure out a way to use our existing dog kibble. I'd put my ring finger and index finger together at the tips, and my middle finger behind. I could control the kibble without the dog taking it from me until I was ready to release the kibble. But we were in a tighter financial situation when I started training our puppy, so I just had to find a way to make it work. Garret covers all this in his courses at DIYK9.com. He has very in-depth courses, and weekly and monthly live training sessions where he will help people with questions when a dog (or owner) needs some extra help.
Is there a rough timeline of how old a puppy should be for mastering different types of training? I have a 10 week pup and don’t know if he’s ahead or behind the curve.
Not really. Different dogs train at different rates, even from the exact same litter. Different training styles also play in the mix. We adopted our dog, and our neighbor adopted our dogs sibling. I trained my dog using Garret's balanced training courses at DIYK9.com, and our neighbor 3 doors down used positive only from the local pet store. My dog walks perfectly on a leash, and 2 of the last 3 times I saw them walking their dog, she was pulling so hard she was literally hopping down the road on her back legs like a kangaroo. Garret goes into these training styles in his free courses at DIYK9.com.
My dog walk great by my side has a great Heel. BUT how do i learn her to walk on just left side so she dosent zig zagging? Do you have a training video i can Buy or something so i can learn her it?
Yes, Garret has paid content at DIYK9.com to take anybody from a puppy through fully off leashed trained. If you think those free courses are in-depth, wait until you get into the actual courses. He even threw in some questions along the way to make sure you grasped the content.
So at what age can I start using e collar ?
It varies from person to person, but since most people are still learning how to train their dogs, and you should never overlay the e-collar on a command until the dog knows the command rock solid, probably ~6 months or older for a puppy. Garret's a master dog trainer and has decades of experience so you'll see him using it some on dogs under 6 months, but he still only uses it on commands the dog knows well to increase the reliability on the command. Garret has this e-collar training in depth at his DIYK9.com site which includes the "Unleashed" course for e-collar training. I'm one of Garret's moderators at this site and we have access to Garret whenever we have questions and on moderator calls, and I can't tell you how important it is to have training before using an e-collar. If someone tries to train a dog using an e-collar and they don't know what they are doing, you can ruin your relationship with your dog and make it very difficult, if not darn near impossible to come back and properly train a dog using an e-collar.

Dealers' choice. Since most people are right-handed, having the dog on the left leaves the right hand free to pay for something at a checkout, hold your drink or phone while on a walk, or for anything else. Left-handed people may choose the other side. It's really up to the person that owns the dog. For me, the added bonus is with my dog on my left, and walking on the left side of the road facing traffic, I'm more secure that my dog won't be hit by a car.

There are so many ways in Garret's courses at DIYK9.com. The simplest is to train the dog from day 1 that isn't not acceptable to jump on people. Dogs are very habitual animals so if you don't allow jumping on people from the day the dog comes home, it's easy. However, most people think puppies are so cute (and they definitely are), so they not only allow puppies to jump up on their legs, but they also encourage it. Then when the dogs are older at 40-50-60+ pounds and able to knock over children and elderly people, then it is a problem that takes more work to fix. It's also not fair on the dog for humans not thinking ahead on this issue. People trained the dog that it's not only allowed to jump on people, but they encouraged and rewarded it, then all the sudden people are fussing at the dog for doing what it has been trained to do literally for its entire life. What do u feed him?
In this case the owners wanted Garret to use a raw diet for training and feeding. But Garret mixes in Royal Canine because it comes in bigger chunks and is easier to hold and manipulate for parts of the training. It's hard to hold raw food firmly in your hand for parts of the training, and if the food is falling on the ground the dog disengages from the trainer and that's exactly what you don't want. I always end up with a dog no one wants or cat
One time i took my friends orange cat because they were moving out and couldn't take it with um so i said no don't put em outside I'll take em because he was a declawed cat but he didn't get along with my older cats so i took em to the animal shelter told them hes a good cat and is declawed and gets along with other cats and dogs and I told my friend oh yeah that orange cat ran off outside but really i took it to the shelter at the time i already had 4 cats so i really didn't need anymore at the time and i still have my 4 cats to

@@troy5292 mine wasn't a puppy though when i got her she's not a off leash dog she has bit someone before but i told the person she doesn't want you to pet her they should have listened. she's aggressive to people and other dogs but not to cats she was never socialized when she was a puppy she's leash trained and wears a muzzle anytime we go for a walk.
@@Mike-su8si These negative traits can be trained out in most cases. However, if your dog is truly aggressive, we suggest reaching out to a qualified local trainer. We have a dog that comes across as aggressive, but she's actually fearful. There's a big difference if you know what you're looking at. This dog is also going blind to boot. So, as a precaution we always tell people not to pet her. She won't bite if she sees people coming, but she has significant blind spots, so we play it safe and do not allow people to pet her. My wife had gone into the pet store for something, and my daughter and I were sitting with this dog on a big rock and holding Snowbell on a leash. Two women came out the store and immediately target locked on Snowbell and started sweet talking the dog in a high-pitched voice (first wrong move), then asked if they could pet Snowbell. I said "No" and started explaining why (see above), but they totally ignored me and said, "Oh, it's OK. We're dog people." Then she ignored me and walked up quickly on Snowbell and grabbed her on both sides of her face and started rubbing her vigorously, and immediately bent down and put her eyes about 3 inches from Snowbell's eyes. I immediately flew mad and lit into the woman because if she were to be bitten, that would likely be a black mark on our dog due to her inability to follow directions. Then my daughter followed suit and lit into the lady because it's my daughter's dog. Snowbell didn't bite or even growl, but personally, I wanted to bite her on Snowbell's behalf. She came directly over one of Snowbell's blind spots which had to surprise her, so she got lucky.

This video is part of a playlist. The first video (I think) was the first day Garret had the dog and first training session this dog had, and progressing through ~11 videos until the dog was ready to go home. The dog wasn't off leash trained because the customer didn't want the dog trained to that level. Although a year later when the original training had not been kept up by the owners, they brought him back to Garret to have the full off-leash training completed. Dealers' choice. Since most people are right-handed, having the dog on the left leaves the right hand free to pay for something at a checkout, hold your drink or phone while on a walk, or for anything else. Left-handed people may choose the other side. It's really up to the person that owns the dog. For me, the added bonus is with my dog on my left and us walking on the left side of the road facing traffic, I'm more secure that my dog won't be hit by a car since I typically walk at night when it's cooler.
