  • The Mammoth Fall Century & Gran Fondo held on September 6, 2014 was the absolute best in Century Cycling Rides I have ever done. The panoramic mountain and lake views were ever so spectacular and the weather temperature was quite cooperative. The only thing that didn't cooperate were those darn headwinds...who ordered the wind action? Next time say "tailwinds" OK? BTW, the altitude or elevation starting at 8000 ft. in Mammoth is a challenge in itself just to breath air in... the air is thin and very dry. How does one train for that? HINT: Just get there 4-5 days ahead of race day to acclimate appropriately and drink plenty of water. I honestly must say after riding three different Centuries in the past that this one was the most challenging for me. I did however complete and finish this race. I believe I may have attained sole position of coming in last place! I am honored to have accomplished this distinguished achievement. LOL I met some really cool cyclist's on this ride... Natalie, Jessica & Craig. Thanks for allowing me to draft behind you and help pull me up on them hills. You are all amazing cyclists and I hope to ride again with you all somewhere and someday in the very near future. This video highlights some different parts of our 102-Mile trek including our mass start roll out. I was quite happy with the video footage taken off of this Sony Action Cam HDR-AS100V that I had mounted on my handlebars. The HD image was quite crisp with all natural looking colors. The audio quality was even better than I had expected. Especially in taming down the wind noise factor including handling any camera bounce noises as well. The lens also did a great job of handling the direct sun in the lens flaring action leaving me still with a very usable and artistic image to work with. The video length is a bit long but entertaining. At the end you will see that I received a police escort back into town with an officer stopping traffic for me in all directions so that I could roll through the red lights! Talk about a little VIP treatment action here, WOW! KUDO'S to the CHP & Mammoth Police Department for all of their awesome protection and support keeping all of us cyclist's safe all the way up to the finish line. I would also like to thank all of the people responsible for putting on such a well organized cycling event. This Mammoth Fall Century is very well staffed event and all personnel I encountered were quite friendly and helpful. Thanks again for providing us with excellent food and beverage accommodations. A big shout out Thank You also goes to "Footloose Sports" for their role in getting us all checked in with the registration process. Would I ever do this ride again? Yes, of course I would but, I'm gonna cross a few more rides first on my bucket list before I do any repeats. Enjoy! Ted V.

Thanks for this Ted. It allowed me to better enjoy the scenery as I had stomach flu at the time. Put the SLOBC Wildflower Century out of Creston, CA in April on your bucket list and you'll be back for that one too.

Michele I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery better this time around of our Mammoth ride. My goodness... wasn't this ride challenging enough without having the stomach flu to boot? Thanks for the heads up on the SLOBC Wildflower Century. Nothing wrong with adding another nice ride for my bucket list.

Did this ride on 2016. Pretty scenery but tough as hell. Cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. Hills every where ;-)

Hi Dana thanks for the feedback. Have an enjoyable ride for this years Mammoth 2016 Gran Fondo. The scenery is spectacular and the roads are excellent. The course is challenging but well worth it. The rest stops are plentiful and well stocked with all the goodies you could ever ask for. A couple of hints: acclimate 3-4 days in advance to get used to the high altitude with the thinner air. Drink plenty of fluids throughout to prevent cramping. Have a fun and safe ride! Ted V.

Hi Ted, I arrived 6 days earlier and did some training rides up there - unfortunately I was slightly dehydrated prior to the start, and it went extremely downhill from there. First hour went great - got in a paceline with 3 other guys and covered 23 miles in about an hour. Then I backed off, and didn't eat and drink enough for the rest of it.....and for the last hour (I did the 70 mile medio), I couldn't average over 100 watts. I had to stop 4 times on the climb up 203 to the finish, and almost passed out each time between dehydration and heat exhaustion (index temps were over 100). But, I still somehow managed to get 51st out of 260 riders and 7th in my age group. Oh, and was on my 25 pound gravel bike too because I broke my shift lever in a crash on my road bike the day before I left for Mammoth. Good times.

Hi Dana I'm glad you survived this years 2016 Mammoth Gran Fondo. Perhaps things may have not gone 100% as planned but please consider that you were not even riding your road bike so that's still quite an accomplishment. BTW, It's a great idea to not only hydrate during your ride but even several days prior to your event ride. This will make all the difference in the world. I would drink plenty of water 2-3 days ahead of my event ride whether or not I felt thirsty just to get it in my system. During the ride you still must do the same for both water and nutrition whether or not you think you need it because if you don't... you stand a greater chance of 'Bonking" and by that time it's literally too late! At Mammoth you've got the altitude to contend with combined with all of the hill climbing attributes and sometimes extreme temperatures. Keep your body fully hydrated and get nutritioned up... take advantage of them rest stops and eat! This will help prevent you from having to nearly pass out which IMO would be quite dangerous! Congratulations on achieving such great stats in your age group.... you deserve it. Thanks for sharing your experience as this will help aid and educate all cyclists that read this post. Glad you made it to ride another day! Be safe out there and alway's have fun! Ted V.
