Excellent review. After a lot of research I bought the Spectre x360 15" shown in this review and this is by far the best notebook I ever had. The performance is incredible, the display is 4K and exactly what I need to run financial applications for my business (lots of charts can fit in the screen), the keyboard is awesome, numpad, audio very good, etc. But believe it or not, what I like the most in this notebook is that it runs cool (with exception of gaming) and it's quieter than any other computer in this performance category. HP did an excellent job with the fans and I'm so happy they finally fixed a known issue with the Spectre. Most of the time I don't hear it. Only when I start some heavy CPU demanding application I will notice the fan running (for me this is around the first 30 minutes of the market opening and then I forget about the fan on this notebook). And to top all of it, the battery is amazing for a computer with this performance level. If there is something I would suggest is that HP would offer a 32GB RAM version. Not sure even why start at 8GB. We should have 2 versions 16 and 32GB, but that's just me I guess. Just wait for a HP sale and buy it, you will not regret!

But for those who were considering the aero 15 you have to ask yourself what is most important in a laptop because the specter 2 in 1 15 and the aero 15 are very different I would think.
Thing is an absolute beauty. I have a 2017 model spectre with a 940mx and this thing BLOWS everything about the old model out of the water. The only thing I prefer over the old model is the keyboard (not a fan of num pads but thats a preference) and a bigger track pad on the old model (again preference) and the thermal cooling is honestly great. The fans run a little too much at times on default but you can change that. the 2017 model was great but had lots of flaws as well and this 2019 model fixes almost all issues (even if the GPU is a little out dated albeit its a 2-in-1 compared to a gaming laptop)
I also had a 2017 Spectre but mine started smoking from the charging port and couldn't be fixed. I'd love to buy this new model. I'm not a fan of their color combinations. The rose gold seems a bit tacky to me. But the other hardware is great! I love the edges. Looks so modern.
Awesome review. I absolutely love the 15", after your review I think this is the laptop for me. Thanks for making it easy to choose. I love your channel by the way, keep up the good work. Thanks.
Bought this late last year in Poseidon blue...Dunno why I'm still watching this. lol I guess I like to hear what Lisa thought of it even though the review came 5 months a little late.
I always enjoy your reviews! I'll admit I mainly come for pen tablets. I bought a Mobilestudio 13inch partly because of your review of it. I think I might pick up this one as well, because I need something with a more readily available keyboard, for coding. Look forward to your next pen tablet reviews.
I don't think HP should have put those specs in the spectre x360. HP has had a plethora of cooling issues in the past, and without some major thermal design changes, that thing will cook itself fast. watching the review anyway to see if they've at least fixed a few of their issues.
@@ManHaiVu I gave up on buying HP laptops after I had two of them become completely unusable in less than a year. One of them completely bricked itself. HP makes some of the nicest looking laptops on the market, but not the longest lasting or best functioning. Acer does better for long term use in my opinion (using a four year old Acer laptop right now and it's just fine)
@@electricnick260 Speaking of Acers, my old búdget Acer is in its fifth year. It has some issues but I've handled it pretty roughly so I'm glad it's still running, all things considered. I'm hoping it will stay that way until later this year when I'll buy this new HP Spectre x360 "gem cut" edition. I'll take my chances with this redesigned chassis and the somewhat improved thermals. I think that as long as you don't game on it 24/7, the internals should hold up - if it was the thermals that were causing your issues...
Thanks Lisa...very informative and helpful review (as always). Sad to see that the memory is soldered onto the board...sigh. I can't believe HP told you not to open it...this is a review unit...silly. Not having the ability to add more RAM is unfortunate. This is really starting to become the norm, but I wish it wasn't. Good to hear that the thermals are actually better than the XPS 15...very surprising actually. I have the MX150 4K version of the laptop and honestly it's been fantastic (after going through 3 initial lemons). It would be great if we could get an OEM to produce an alloy laptop that competes with the MacBook Pro 15 and Razer 15. I think content creators would love to see a design with higher end GPUs and 4K wide color gamut displays that you don't have to break the bank on. More thunderbolt ports would also be great too...good to see that this version has 2 of them. Thanks again for the great review.
Good review Lisa. Im not crazy about the gem cut sides - I wish HP had introduced these specs on last year's X360. As it stands, I like the form factor of the Zbook Studio X360 better.
I only just discovered this channel the other day - exactly what I was looking for as I'm trying to find the "perfect" machine (which you are helpfully demonstrating doesn't exist, but also enabling me to work out what compromises can be made). I especially like: detailed pen reviews that explicitly mention and demo tilt and jitter, detailed screen reviews, power supply specs (very important), the drawing tablet reviews, accessing and displaying the internals, and your overall style. I appreciate that there are only so many things you can fit into a video, but I am explicitly looking for these tests too: does it support USB C charging *from a battery*? (in the case of HP, I have read that they locked down USB C charging to their chargers only, and don't make a battery bank - but also read that it might complain, but does charge) can it run under load with the lid closed, and if so what happens to performance and thermals? related to the above, as it's the load I want to run, I would like to see video encoding performance/time/thermals (maybe encode the PNG frames from Big Buck Bunny for a consistent test, available at media.xiph.org/BBB/BBB-1080-png/ and benchmark time to stitch them together in a specific version of ffmpeg, i.e. a repeatable test) if It can't run with the lid closed, what's the minimum angle you can close it to before it turns off? even more specifically, does Krita support the brush tilt? if it supports Thunderbolt, does it also explicitly support an external GPU in a PCIe enclosure? (some manufacturers limit this) and finally, I'd like to see the exact reviewed machine model number in the video description. Also for this particular machine with a 135W power supply, it isn't USB PD because the current USB spec only allows for 100W max. Although I'd still like to see if it charges at all with a USB C battery, assuming it supports USB PD at all. Thanks for the excellent reviews!
I got this computer with the GTX GeForce 1050TI... 2019... Amazing computer Poseidon Blue. I got mine from Ebay Price 1400. Hp had it for sale for 2300.... I bought it for 1400. Worth every penny. It was time for an upgrade, my old 2009 HP laptop needed to retire.
I need something like this, just with a better pen tech, maybe a bit more repairable (I seriously want to know it's insides). Great to see a 6 core 2in1's pls! And neat design.
Every time I see a Spectre review now, my decision to return mine and get a Blade instead is thoroughly reinforced. For that alone, I thank you for these reviews.
I'm currently trying to sell my piece of shot Spectre... It works now but only after HP practically swapped out every component one by one. Quality control = non existent
Years ago I started hating HP after they started their proprietary bs about the time Sony arrived on the scene. Now recently I got an old workstation with a i7 in it and I am flabbergasted with the quality of it. It's outstanding! The 17 " screen quality is the best I've seen outside of using a flatscreen tv to game with. It's plenty fast for world of tanks, which I'm one of the best in the world at, but it still drags strangely when using graphics programs. Love it even though it's as heavy as a tank. Before this thing I wouldn't have even considered HP as a new purchase even though I've heard good things about the Omen. My first choices would have been Asus and Dell. Now I'm looking forward to getting one of these and an omen.
LR is very dependent on fast storage- like SSDs offer a huge performance improvement over an HDD. So an SD card wouldn't be terribly fast for catalog storage. But you certainly could do it.
Lisa, I've been watching your videos for a while and been enjoying the ones with pen digitizers immensely. since this one wasn't equipped with the best digitizer, of what portable tablets or laptops you used would be great for a person moving from a Wacom 13HD stationary screen that needs a device for lots of travel that can somewhat compete with Wacom Mobile studio. I would love a 2018 recap or comparison video that deals with Wacom mobile pc alternatives, or even just a quick reply with some of your videos that would show some good starting comparisons.
you need to consider your use case.. if your artwork tends to depend on slow line work then anything with an Ntrig pen (hp, ms surface products) will cause you problems.. If you tend to be quick and loose with your brush work then the ntrig should not be an issue.. Im a digital artist as well and explored Ntrig on a surface pro 3 and I found it work fairly well.. I also own a wacom cintiq 27 inch so Im very used to wacom... that all said Im going to order this laptop, and give it a go, If your curious you should try it out to see how it feels, or if you have friend who owns a surface pro three or greater you can try theirs it will be a similar experience to HP.
hi, I saw Linus Tech Tips review this laptop a few days ago and he said there was a lot of ghosting and pretty bad response times on the 4k panel. I was wondering if you noticed this?
I'm a little behind in technology. Can I assume Lan connection would be done via dongle through usbc? Also, is it possible for you to give us heads up when HP has sales? I'm a little sad they don't have a happy 14 mid range. Thank you for a great review.
Good review. I was leaning towards this until I learned about the soldered on memory. What?? Upgrade by replacing the whole thing?? Not your problem but Dell might be the better option. Also looking at the LG gram and Lenovo

The HP website says the TB3 port on this machine supports Power Delivery. Is that actually usable with this machine, considering the TDP of the processor and the power consumption of a 1050Ti?
It's such a shame the memory is no longer replaceable. Would be interested to see how this compares in games to the older 8705g model from last year. I know you mentioned its fast but I looked at the max boost speeds and they're about the same or slightly lower than the 8705g, so since most games dont do as great a job in terms of multi threading I can only assume the performance will be a minor improvement. What I'd love to see it compared to is the razer blade 15 advanced with the 4k touch panel and rtx graphics, especially as these are both expensive so if the razer is that much better I might go that way in the future. Also does the razer have pen support? Oh by the way not sure if it's different in the UK but the lower model has a 1080p panel here which I know you have preferred in the past for the compromise of better battery life, but then the memory...aggh such a shame.
Great review unfortunately for me I had to return this model since the fan controller broke to the point where the fan would be on all the time and at max speed. Looking online it seems to be a common problem so instead of gambling and getting another defective X360 I ended up going with the XPS 15 FHD 16GB 2 in 1 and I am currently waiting to receive it since it was a special order model. Im a little sad that I had to down grade to a lesser performing laptop but hey the Dell one seems more reliable and it also seems to work better with Linux, from what I can see online on forums, which I usually dual boot on my laptops to have some fun and see how far open source software has come.
@@DannyGlasspool so far so good I haven't had any problems with and I really like the Wacom pen tech versus the N-Trig it just feels like it performs better so what I'm gonna do next is dual boot windows and Linux on it and see how that turns out
Can you do more engineering software, like CAD, FEM, CFD? (I know performance depends heavily on the software, but for a general overview.) Specview perf is great, but more specific software would be awesome. E.g. ANSYS (for fluent for example) has a free version you could use :)
Hi. Thank you for so many interesting and complete review videos. Can you tell me, if the HP spectre line is capable of virtualization? I had not so good experience there with other products (after problem free update to Windows 10 Pro). For example, a Lenovo Yoga 900 had display problems with virtualization and Hyper-V turned on (after 2 years, the drivers matured and the problems disappeared). Then, I needed to switch on VT in the BIOS on an HP Omen PC with 8-core AMD CPU and 32 gig RAM. Unfortunately, all overclocking software stopped to work then, sigh. Since Microsoft starts to use VT even in Windows Home Defender features, this seems so oldschool :-) I would be happy if you included such tests in your reviews. Thanks again! :-)
Yes!!!!! I have been waiting for people to review this laptop, especially your take on it. I love the 2-in-1 functionality, the design, and that it actually has a full size keyboard. I need the dedicated graphics for video editing. I wish it was lighter and had a better trackpad and full size SD card. I'm also considering the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme. The 15" Microsoft Surface Book 2 is pretty appealing as well, but I've heard the graphics isn't as good. I'll be creating one video a week. I've heard Dell will launch a new XPS 15 this year, and if they move the webcam up top, I'll consider it as well. Although, none of those have the full size keyboard, and they cost a lot more than the Spectre. The weight of it is a little concerning, especially in tablet mode. I'm in love with the Thinkpad X1 Extreme keyboard, but it's not a 2-in-1. I wish the Thinkpad X1 Yoga had dedicated graphics!
Have a look at HP Zbook Studio Series (15 inch). It c9mes with full size SD Card slot. Zbook could be configured with i78570, Corei9 2.9GHz or Xeon, with or without NVidia Quadro p2000,
I understand where you're coming from but companies are focused on the latest technology so I guess that's why they opted for the microSD card slot. You can buy a USB Laptop SD Card reader/adapter anywhere online.
@@shawnjones984 I have a USB card reader combo adapter for SD/MicroSD/CF/Sony Memory stick but much rather prefer a dedicated SD card slot for convenience. I can connect my camera directly to the laptop's USB adapter and download it from there but again it's a bit of an inconvenience.
I read and compare between HP spectr x360 and Lenovo yoga c930. But I'm still confused, I don't know which one is the best and which one I should buy from them. Can you tell me the difference so I can decide easily? And sorry for my bad English language.
Would you recommend the Spectre x360 15-df0068nr (the blue model) over the 15t model(gold model) that is customizable? I like the blue color more than the gold, and need a work, school, play computer with a pen. Would the blue version be enough for light gaming, note taking, and doodles or would it be better to get a customizable 15t?
I just received mine, but notice a high pitch tone only when the fans come on, does yours also have fans with this high pitch noise? Or do I have a bad one and should return it, browsing and streaming the laptop seems to be completely silent .
HP makes some of the most if not the most beautiful laptops. I saw one on display at Best Buy and realized that seeing them on the HP website and on UA-cam did NOT do them justice. Then I start reading reviews and it seems I have found more negative reviews for HP than positive reviews. Are they really that unreliable? Someone give me something positive about them to read! I haven't found one laptop that would sway me from an HP, but I don't want to buy something that will break within the first few years. Are they really that bad? I bought an HP laptop in 2007...I believe it was the HP dv6500 special edition. Cost me a little over $2000. It had everything! And it lasted me for a long time! I really didn't have any problems with it. Now that I'm ready for another one, I'm reading all these negative reviews!! Aaahhhh! LOL
I think a 15” should have a number pad on it. I had a surface book 2 and while the lack of number pad wasn’t the only deal-breaker, it was one of them.

Lisa, you're doing an amazing job. Keep it up!
Love all the tech reviews, definitely helpful!
I'd love a smackdown with the X1 Extreme! Sounds fun!
Great review, I am going to get one, thanks Lisa!
I always enjoy your reviews! I'll admit I mainly come for pen tablets. I bought a Mobilestudio 13inch partly because of your review of it. I think I might pick up this one as well, because I need something with a more readily available keyboard, for coding. Look forward to your next pen tablet reviews.
You are really good at this, lady. Thanks for all the great info!
Yeah, there is no way that the Spectre x360 will run healthy with these stats in such a small chassis
Had 15 years of cook on HP laptops ...
Heating problems never been sorted
Would never buy again HP !!!
I love your reviews Lisa!! Your shirt is hilarious!
Am I the only one who enjoys watching laptop reviews even though I am not in the market for one.
Love your reviews, very informative & helpful.
Excellent review! thank you very much!!!
Great review as always, btw, love the T-shirt 😎
I couldn't wait any longer and just bought it lol. I'm happy with it so far.
Michael Stanton i just saw this at Best Buy for $1199.00 today.
Thanks for this video, I just bought the Spectre and, I opted for the better graphics card. I can't thank you enough!
Will you be reviewing the 2020 model?
I appreciate that there are only so many things you can fit into a video, but I am explicitly looking for these tests too:
does it support USB C charging *from a battery*? (in the case of HP, I have read that they locked down USB C charging to their chargers only, and don't make a battery bank - but also read that it might complain, but does charge)
can it run under load with the lid closed, and if so what happens to performance and thermals?
related to the above, as it's the load I want to run, I would like to see video encoding performance/time/thermals (maybe encode the PNG frames from Big Buck Bunny for a consistent test, available at media.xiph.org/BBB/BBB-1080-png/ and benchmark time to stitch them together in a specific version of ffmpeg, i.e. a repeatable test)
if It can't run with the lid closed, what's the minimum angle you can close it to before it turns off?
even more specifically, does Krita support the brush tilt?
if it supports Thunderbolt, does it also explicitly support an external GPU in a PCIe enclosure? (some manufacturers limit this)
and finally, I'd like to see the exact reviewed machine model number in the video description.
Also for this particular machine with a 135W power supply, it isn't USB PD because the current USB spec only allows for 100W max. Although I'd still like to see if it charges at all with a USB C battery, assuming it supports USB PD at all.
Thanks for the excellent reviews!
Definitely agree with the hard to open! My older one takes 2 hands; preferably someone else's hands.
Best review ever. Thanks! Getting mine next week with the 32gb Intel Optane 512gb.
Marc Pike how much u paid??
@@Mrundercoverspy1 well I was getting 200 off but now they tell me if will be a month so trying to cancel.
@@MarcsFpvAddiction Thanks Marc, I am thinking about ordering the same with same specs u did. On hp site it says will ship on 6/10.
@@Mrundercoverspy1 Around 1634 with tax and then I bought the 3 year support plan for an extra 275.
Absolutely bring the smack down!
Man, you have the coolest/nerdiest shirt collection ever haha
I got this computer with the GTX GeForce 1050TI... 2019... Amazing computer Poseidon Blue. I got mine from Ebay Price 1400. Hp had it for sale for 2300.... I bought it for 1400. Worth every penny. It was time for an upgrade, my old 2009 HP laptop needed to retire.
I really don't need something this high-end, but it's so beautiful
I need something like this, just with a better pen tech, maybe a bit more repairable (I seriously want to know it's insides). Great to see a 6 core 2in1's pls! And neat design.
check out hp zbook studio x360 g5 ;)
Not sure this is the laptop for me, but I freaking LOVE your shirt 🤟😼
What is the best 2 in 1 laptop for note taking, netflix and making presentations? Slim bazels is a must for me, thanks!
The best choice would be Lenovo Yoga 530 it's a budget laptop and has a good performance you'll love it.
Vrishabh Rai And should i buy it now or wait for a refresh/new model?
Would you recommend this HP Spectre x360 15t over the Spectre Folio based on the price, productivity, storage, and apps.
Hi~ Can you tell me the refresh rate of the this model please?
Every time I see a Spectre review now, my decision to return mine and get a Blade instead is thoroughly reinforced. For that alone, I thank you for these reviews.
I'm currently trying to sell my piece of shot Spectre... It works now but only after HP practically swapped out every component one by one.
Quality control = non existent
Have you done a smack down between the 15 in spectre and the Microsoft 15 in surface pro with the 10th gen intel chip for business.
Great review! Can the micro sd card slot be used for "permanent" storage upgrade? Would the sd card be fast enough to store pictures used in LR?
How is the brightness of the display? General reports are that it is dim.
When you showed the dell and hp side by side, was the hp set to full brightness?
hi, I saw Linus Tech Tips review this laptop a few days ago and he said there was a lot of ghosting and pretty bad response times on the 4k panel. I was wondering if you noticed this?
How did you like the usb-c charging on it? It seems the cable is out of the way of a mouse or coffee cup....
Hello can you guide between hp envy 15 or envy 15t for video editing which one is good?
I'm a little behind in technology. Can I assume Lan connection would be done via dongle through usbc? Also, is it possible for you to give us heads up when HP has sales? I'm a little sad they don't have a happy 14 mid range. Thank you for a great review.
Why do companies still put screws under adhesive pads? What does it add?
nice video.. lisa
Hello Lisa, Hope you're doing well. Is there a Asus Zenbook 13 (UX331UN) review in the pipeline?
Good review. I was leaning towards this until I learned about the soldered on memory. What?? Upgrade by replacing the whole thing?? Not your problem but Dell might be the better option. Also looking at the LG gram and Lenovo
So the psoiden blue also has the tacky copper color?
ohh man I have been so excited to see your review on this Lisa.. I am very close to pulling the trigger.. Thank you for putting this together. I am digital artist do you think this would work well for zbrush and other standard modeling packages 3ds Max Maya etc... I know it cant completely be a Beast but Im hoping it can do mid level work.. I will save beast work for my beast desktop
I tested ZBrush and Blender and it worked well for my not terribly complex models.
@@mobiletechreview oh awesome ok.. My work varies depending on the client. Im hoping this can handle most video game art related production... excluding terrain building and other massive scale art tasks
The HP website says the TB3 port on this machine supports Power Delivery. Is that actually usable with this machine, considering the TDP of the processor and the power consumption of a 1050Ti?
Does the screen have high latency that’s what Linus review said and how is the trackpad
malavpatel77 Linus had other comments too. Did MTR have a chance to use this machine further?
Hi Lisa, Can you please do the smackdown with this latest HP Spectre X360 with the other comparable convertibles on the market like the XPS?
HP Spectre x360 15 vs. Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme smackdown - yes please! Also, how is HP's quality control? The reviews have been mixed.
debating between xps, spectre and yoga/thinkpad convertibles 2 in 1. Not sure which one to get.
Hi Lisa, If you still have all of the Hp spectres x360s lying around could you do a throughout the years of hp spectre, That would be super rad :)
1. Can you do comparison between this and Lenovo Yoga 730 15" with GeForce 1050?
2. Can you try to see how well this runs VR?
How's the Dell laptop going?
@@DannyGlasspool so far so good I haven't had any problems with and I really like the Wacom pen tech versus the N-Trig it just feels like it performs better so what I'm gonna do next is dual boot windows and Linux on it and see how that turns out
Can you do more engineering software, like CAD, FEM, CFD? (I know performance depends heavily on the software, but for a general overview.) Specview perf is great, but more specific software would be awesome. E.g. ANSYS (for fluent for example) has a free version you could use :)
Is it possible to change the SSD easily by my own?
Great Video
Loving the shirt Lisa
I don't understand why HP eliminated the SD Card slot and instead opted for a microSD card slot. As a photographer an SD Card is preferred
And sorry for my bad English language.
yes!!! finally!!!!
this makes u awesome lisa
Would you recommend the Spectre x360 15-df0068nr (the blue model) over the 15t model(gold model) that is customizable?
I like the blue color more than the gold, and need a work, school, play computer with a pen.
Would the blue version be enough for light gaming, note taking, and doodles or would it be better to get a customizable 15t?
Hey mate as per your requirements i believe Lenovo Yoga 730 would be the best choice for you.
Is the storage upgradable?
Hello dear please tell me it's oled screen.
Waiting for your s10 review!
Almost got the mid 2018 version w/ 4K, nvidia m-150, 16gb Ram & 500 SSD for 1,400 on Presidents’ Day sale on their 20% sale. I wanted diamond cut tho. Glad my card denied the purchase lol... When will the next Hp sale date be?
Memorial Day, I'd guess.
Dear Lisa I am one of your followers, I have question regarding the laptops, I want to buy a laptop that is excellent in gaming and content creation, if you was in my position what laptop you will recommend?
When and where can I buy this? I'm in Canada
Yeeeeeeaaaaah Buddy, Lightweight baby.
Calm down Ronnie, it’s a laptop not a stack of weights!
Which configuration you think would be better for graphic & video editing? This one 1050ti 16gb (soldered on) vs mx150 32gb (upgraded)?
which one is best for officework
How well does this laptop work with zoom?
