This song is about R. Budd Dwyer, who was the Pennsylvania state treasurer. He was tried and found guilty of racketeering, bribery, fraud, and conspiracy. On January 22, 1987, he called a press conference where he pulled out a gun, put it in his mouth, and pulled the trigger.
And there's a video on UA-cam that shows this event unfolding
And later found innocent.
The song stems from Richard Patrick seeing this live when he was a kid.
@@toastysock I do not believe he was found innocent, he had already been convicted and was awaiting sentencing for the day after he shot himself, but I dont think they found out later he was innocent, but I could be wrong, but I remember all of this when it happened very clearly...
He also left a letter for his family. What a tragic event.
fun fact- Richard Patrick, the singer for Fillter is the younger brother of actor Robert Patrick, who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2. And later had roles on tv in the X-files, The Unit, and sons of anrachy

In 2010, former U.S. attorney James West, who prosecuted Dwyer, affirmed Dwyer's guilt,[4] stating that "the evidence against Dwyer was overwhelming and indisputable".[5] All posthumous appeals made by Dwyer's lawyers on Dwyer's behalf were denied, and his convictions were upheld.[6][7] Along with Barbara Hafer and Rob McCord, Dwyer is one of three former Pennsylvania State treasurers to be convicted of corruption since the 1980s

There's a great documentary about Budd Dwyer. I grew up and still live in PA. He was framed!
When this song came out, everyone was mistaking the lyrics to be about Kurt Cobain. But, as many have pointed out, it's about Bud Dwyer, and is paying homage to the sacrifice he made publicly as a last act of defiance to clear his name. Richard is praising the courage he had to do it by saying, as a double meaning - "hey man, nice shot" - taking a shot at the unfair and corrupt justice system, as well as the literal meaning. Perfection.
Man Lex is on top of things. When Brad paused it the first time, she could feel and knew the kick was coming... "ooooh it's gonna kick in". Lex, love how much you just can groove with the music and appreciate it for what it is and the vibe it is putting out. Love watching you guys and all the songs you select. Brings me back to my adolescence and growing up in the 90s when all these songs were new. Keep the reactions coming.

So did I Richard. Back in the 90's. I didn't understand the meaning because I was just rocking this song. The way they made this just became one of my favorites.
Very cathartic to play too
The first time I heard this song was when Filter was the opening band for Guns n Roses in 2012 during the GNR residency shows at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , and was so impressed by their performance, I became a instant fan. The singer , Richard Patrick told the audience before they did this song that this is the song that “ put his kids through college “ 😁
- When this came out we had no way to look up lyrics, in some cases they printed them inside the album cover but then you'd have to buy it or know someone who did because there was no internet to find images of the album inserts. In any case, none of these songs were written to be listened to like this for sure, having the next 10-15 seconds of words sitting static on a screen while you wait for the singer to get to them really hurts the vibe of just experiencing the music. In a lot of cases (not necessarily this one, don't really recall) the music videos were made to go along with the music as a sort of art piece and part of the experience, and you end up missing out on that too when you're watching the lyric videos.

I think it all depends on how a person enjoys music. For me, knowing the lyrics can vastly change how much I enjoy a song.
It's crazy cuz I've listened to most these songs they review my entire life & with the lyrics up I'm like, "They said WHAT??!!!
Been singing a third of the lyrics wrong all this time & quite honestly don't even care. Kinda made up my own narrative & meaning for them on a personal level & in a strange way makes them even more special to me.
As you mention this I'm remembering sitting around with my friends rewinding over & over trying to figure out what they were actually saying because, ya... not too many albums contained all the lyrics & you really did have to work at it.
You make a very good point about listening as the artist intended. Makes a VERY big difference on the impact & emotional connection a song can have.
This is how i listen to songs... No lyrics. Just the experience. Lyrics come later. Feel the vibe of the song. Lex listens to the song and dont care what it means.
Yeah, you can scream without hurting yourself, like Brad said, it’s about being educated and in control. Maynard James Keenan of Tool is a good example of someone who has good control.
Song was inspired by the public suicide of R. Budd Dwyer, (before Kurt Cobain died by suicide.) Richard Patrick, (singer for Filter/former member of Nine Inch Nails,) is very vocal about how that inspired him and that it was written before Cobain died. Patrick says that it got him thinking about what it must take for a person to do that-Dwyer held a press conference and shot himself in the middle of it in front of an audience so there’s video of it which floats around the internet to this day, (the press conference wasn’t some random event he decided to hold, he was being convicted of financial crimes and was going to prison.)

Possibly my favorite intro to any horror movie. It set the tone so great without any cheesy jump-scares or cliche synth music.
Totally recommend "trip like I do" by Filter/the crystal Method. Why every reaction channel hasn't done that yet is beyond me but maybe get ahead of the curve? Anyway love your channel and this was the eleventh in a binge watch. Cheers!

If only he could get out of his own way and just enjoy the music. There's always time to analyze later.
I've written solos for decades, mostly pure channeling of inpiration. Creativity. Rarely "mean" anything. Going to be very different when they do.
That's kinda the downside to this stuff. There's absolutely some music that isn't about "meaning" in any really tangible way; but there's other stuff that's quite deep with heavy story telling, and when they're going into this completely blind song after song they can end up in the wrong headspace for a song. Miss the deeper meaning of one song while overanalyzing another one with little depth of meaning. But, hey, is what it is, no real way around that.

Song is about a corrupt politician that got busted. Instead of facing justice he shot himself in the mouth blowing out the back of his head on national tv. The dude is a hero, saved us from having to pay for his housing and food in jail.

I picked up this disc as soon as I’d heard this and “Take Another”. It shared time in my player with Orange 9mm’s “Driver Not Included”. “Glistening” off that album is a banger.

Initially people thought this was about Kurt Cobain but the lead singer came out and said it was about Bud Dwyer. I regretfully downloaded the Bud Dwyer suicide press conference when I was in college, it’s pretty messed up / disturbing.

@Sukhpal Bhogal - We introduced our soon-to-be 18-year-old daughter to Terminator 2, a few weeks ago. When the T-1000 came on screen, the first thing I said to my daughter is, "That's Filter's brother". She was an instant fan of T2, since she has been a Filter fan for a bit.

I was working in the AV room in high school and watching a news conference on the little TV we had there and that's when R Budd Dwyer shot himself at the podium during a news conference on his embezzlement charges. That's why a lot more news channels went to a 7 second broadcast delay after that.
Skinny Puppy rolled footage of that incident as part of their stage front TVs video footage during the "Too Daek Park" tour. Pretty shocking to see that again during a concert at College Park Maryland.

When this first came out I went to see Filter in a club in Fort Lauderdale FL. The name of the club was The Edge. Awesome show.

@@steelyspielbergo I heard that the guy that informed on him admitted to setting him up. I'm not extremely knowledgeable on the situation, but I did read that somewhere. I don't agree with what he did, but he did it so his family would get the money. If he died while still in his position, they got over a million dollars. I'm not saying it was the right thing, but I understand it.
Always thought this was about Kurt Cobain when I was a kid. Also heard it was about Michael Jordan and "the shot" over Craig Ehlo (Filter is a Cleveland band). I like my versions better than the truth.

You used to be able to see the video of this on YT and I'm not sure that they haven't banned it by now. What a crazy story on who his is referencing here (others said it below so i won't repeat it). Oh, if nobody mentioned it the singer is the little brother of Robert Patrick who was the liquid terminator on the T2 movie. As well as the agent that replaced Mulder on the last years of the X-Files.

Fun story, goes like this: So lead guitarist and singer of this band, Richard Patrick, was a guitarist in Nine Inch Nails w/Trent Reznor, very early days, so after Pretty Hate Machine came out, NIN went on tour, Trent decides he wants to hire a whole new group of musicians after the tour, fair enough. So, he tells Richard the news, which means aspiring young guitarist on the cusp of success, now has no job. ...oh damn, that must have stung, but actually the better way to fire his guitarist, his friend...Richard obviously got so pissed, he started his own band, and this first Filter album has some great pent-up anger being released.
That is a fun story and like most goofy UA-cam comment "stories" it doesn't contain an ounce of truth. Cool job being that guy and spreading baseless worthless gossip.
Fun fact: Richard Patrick (singer/main guy) is the brother of actor Robert Patrick (bad Terminator in Terminator 2)

Stated below also, Bud Dwyer was a state official in Pennsylvania. He was charged with several crimes due to his
alleged misconduct. He called a news conference and killed himself in front of the media. The band wrote this about that.

Brad & Lex - i see some of the other listeners are telling you about the suicide of Budd Dwyer - but there's a key element they left out (maybe i missed someone who did) - but the MOTIVE for his suicide is a noble one - he discovered there was a loophole in Pennsylvania law - that if he died while still in office - his wife and children could still receive his government pension. He was already an older man and his family didn't have much money - and with him going to prison - his wife would have been in dire circumstances. So he killed himself on his last day in office so his wife would still be eligible for his pension - so he died knowing that his wife + children would be taken care of. THAT'S WHY HE IS TREATED AS A HERO BY THE LYRICS OF THIS SONG. He actually killed himself at a press conference in which he 1) proclaimed his innocence 2) insisted his own party had turned him into a scape goat and 3) his motive for suicide was to provide for his wife / family. It's awful to watch - but i recommend you watch it. Then decide for yourself if you think he was acting in a virtuous manner.
