    You are such a lucky guy having a good woman to join you on these Adventures. I had a good woman join me on my sailing adventures on four different sailboats in San Diego, but not any more . Moving to Florida selling my house in Yucca Valley California going to buy a place in Crystal River Florida and buy a sailboat. I am going to do the Caribbean. Looking for my next sailing lady. oh yeah Camille I forgot you're a lucky lady having a good man to share your life with and especially all the adventures that, that brings. really enjoy all the videos.

    OMG did that crossing bring back memories! My Dad had several sailboats over the years, but an old wood hulled yawl he named “ Blue Star” comes clearly to mind. She was about 34 ft. With a narrow, 7.5 ft. beam. Full keel and was so effing slow it would sometimes take a full eight hours to cross from the breakwater to the Isthmus! Of course no auto pilot and a heavy tiller. When Dad had to go below, my dear sweet Mom took over the tiller and it was all she could do to keep that boat pointing. Seeing you kids beating into that heavy sea brought back some great times in m6 early life. Thanks for sharing your sailing with 73 year old fart!

      That is awesome! Thanks for this comment ! I only had one passage to the isthmus that took over 8 hours due to high winds and beating we were pointing for Emerald Bay but the winds and waves gave us so much southing we only made two harbors by tacking back out for an hour, good times 😂

    Stoked you two are exploring the northern islands. It’s a guilty pleasure, but as a SF sailor, it’s a little bit fun watching folks accustomed to SoCal conditions get into the crap weather that we have to deal with on most days (especially during summer). You obviously did great, but it’s still fun to see the contrast.

      Growing up in the bay sailing and now sailing southern california... I concur! We just sailed my moms Mason 43' from Berkeley where she has been berthed for 29 years, down here to Ventura to be next to our boat Avocet. We miss the bay, but will return soon on our boat, then continue on our travels.

    Rolle Polly anchorages always give me a slight morning headache:(
    Frye's on Santa Cruz always seems flat, calm and well protected, plus that spring above the beach has good water, you can even take a cold shower:)
    Your anchorage on Santa Rosa looks a lot better than last one :)
    Those Sheep Head are good eating when BBQ' d fresh!!!

    Awesome! My Ingrid Gaffer is at Pacific Corinthian Marina, Channel Islands. I sailed down from Moss 3 years ago, picked up a mooring at Avila, anchored Coho. I've only anchored 4 times at Santa Cruz so I look forward to your videos to pick up tips. I see a wind vane in your future. I just picked up a Monitor at Mike's consignment for 800 bucks. And get busy building that hard dodger. Cheers.

    I have a Catalina 30 and it hunts around the anchor too. I drop a stern anchor straight down plus some more line and that drags along the bottom enough to cut down on the hunting. In light winds at night it stops the twirling around the anchor too. Easy to retrieve because it's not dug in.
    I always go to Santa Barbara first, provision then head west and drop down to San Miguel on a reach. If it proves to wild you can always fall off to Santa Cruz Is. I might try your route next time.
    Ship shape and Bristol Fashion on the main's reefing job! Mine always looks like a dog's dinner.

      We tried to rig our storm jib up as an anchor riding sail on the backstay but it’s flogging was too violent in the high winds , we found the motion of the boat yawling far more comfortable than a rolly anchorage 😂

    At anchor, I prefer to use a snubber line, attached to the anchor rode with a Rolling hitch, and run it thru a chock at the bow. There is quite a bit of sideways pressure on the bow roller when it's very windy and the boat yaws a lot. You may also put two snubber lines, one on each side. Keep on the good work, Cheers.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 роки тому

      That’s a good tip, I never use them on rope rode but it might help as you mentioned

    What are your limitations sailing her. North Canada, Greenland too dangerous? Around the capes a possibility. The Atlantic Pacific ok? Baltic and Bering's doable? Within the next four months I want to be there, it all comes down to finding the right boat. Being aware of the hurricane season is wise. Love watching your documented adventures.

      My boat can go anywhere as long as she doesn’t need to be an icebreaker, and as long as her rudder works.

    I'm not sure what your experience is and I wasn't there so I can't say too much but 15-25 knots is standard for me up in the San Francisco bay. Your boat is totally capable of the conditions. Try moving your traveler and jib cars. It can really help. Good on you for going out and challenging yourself. That's how you become a better sailor

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 роки тому

      I have over 5000 miles of passage making and have sailed in Orkney Islands, Åland Islands, sailed to Bermuda and the entirety of the west coast of the United States, That is my level of experience and I can say with great confidence that there is not a 30ft boat in the world that can sail causal beating into 20-25 knots and decent sized wind waves. We had 2 reefs in the main and our boat doesn’t have a main sheet car it has two fix points and we had a hanked on 90% , and we had a destination we were sailing to so it wasn’t just a day sail on the bay where we could adjust out point for comfort. I know the saying goes “ if you can sail in sf bay you can sail anywhere” but like you said You weren’t there so you can’t say too much

    Hello James, once again, great video! What do you use as a rocker-stopper? Is it an external device (submerged) or an extra bridle on the anchor chain? Keep up the good sailing!

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 роки тому

      If you google search “rocker stopper” you will see the kind we use, they are plastic discs that hang off the boom and make life so much better in a rolly anchorage

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 роки тому +3

      Yes to better reflect our adventures as a family, when I started the channel in 2015 I was single, doing deliveries and dreaming of owning my own boat. Now as we are getting close to full time cruising I felt it was time to make the change.
