- Scale model subjects are inexhaustible when it comes to choices. The model railroad genre expands the subject matter even further. Furthermore, the smaller the scale the greater the challenge.

Seeing only the edited portions of this journey somewhat conceals the extraordinary investment of engineering time required to develop a model with this degree of accuracy.
I am in awe of the discipline alone required from due diligence to execution to completion.
Having built scale replicas of my own home and shop with less detail than any project on this channel, I absolutely marvel at the skill sets, time management and artistic brilliance displayed here.
Bravo! Proverbial hat removed.
The challenge with a project like this, is as you say, the editing time, not to mention the actual build time as well. It is impossible to publish it chronologically, which is why I have to release it the way I do.
Having said this, I do have quite a bit of coverage of the whole build eventually as I find time to publish it.

You're wife has a good eye. That pylon sets off the mini scene and attracts the eye. I've only been in the hobby for 2.5 years but I do know that the detail parts didn't exist decades ago. While I mostly scratchbuild, those detail parts really add to whatever I'm making. Its a great time to be in the hobby!

Boomer, whenever I find myself in a modeling rut, or when it seems like everything I touch turns to sand-and it happens to all of us-I can watch, and in many instances, rewatch your videos and begin to feel inspiration flowing through my veins again. It doesn’t usually happen like the spontaneity of snapping my fingers, but it does happen. I know I won’t ever model the Seaspan Carrier Princess and that’s okay. The real value of your channel, or at least what it’s meant to me since the Glover Road days, is following along with your thought processes and common sense analysis of scratch building. It is indeed a pleasure to watch you work. Thank you.

Boomer, great little discussion. I have to say this, in case my wife sees it, but your wife is right. A little bit of a colour pop, brings the eye in, and then all the other details bercome obvious, in a good way. The barge details are looking awesome. Great job.

Hi River Road, I wanted to share an application I use in sifting leaves from leftover static grass on my trees etc. after gluing the leaves and thy are dry; I lightly message the branches to collect the leaves. This also collects static grass. I separate the 2 with a dollar store plastic colander and shake. The static grass sticks to the colander and the leaves fall through. It works great. Thanks Philip

There are some pretty outstanding military modelers on UA-cam that are in their mid-20's to mid-30's, as well as a few outstanding model railroaders in their late 30's early 40's. So there's hope for a continuation on the model building hobby.
The thing that really impresses me is the creativity and the integration of new (modeling related) technology that some of these young people are using now days. Exciting time to be a modeler, but I wish I was 20yrs younger so that I could recoup all the time I wasted the last 20yrs or so. You get to an age where you realize how short life is, and also realize that your years of productive model building are starting to get pretty finite.
@@WHJeffB I hear you but I don't think about wasted years. I wasted years in stuff as well. I just embrace the moment and express myself emotionally in the hobby with little regard to how things turn out. I am passionate about the hobby but I don't take the actual practice too seriously when it comes to O.C.D. perfection.
Subsequently, I welcome new challenges ( like a novice), and prefer to get more loose and sloppy about it at times. A loose approach feels liberating. Cheers and happy modeling to you! ~ Boomer. 😉
I would love to see pictures of your layouts over the years. Watching your videos is really motivating me to start mine. I'm a locomotive engineer for csx in ohio. so the time to start one is based on time I don't have at the moment. But I have bought things over the years to be prepared for my layout. I guess you could say it's a retirement plan HaHa.. Love the video's and the knowledge you give. Thank you.
Wow! You must see things from the cab perspective most model railroaders would only dream of.
As long as you are thinking about it that is a good thing. Most satisfying layouts simmer for years in the mind of the builder.
Even though I built several layouts over the years (for client's, etc.) I was always planning this "smaller" one in the back of mind. Now it is here and I enjoy building and sharing it.

Spot on mate. What you say re perspective is golden.
It really is about perspective. How do I approach the scene. Larger layouts are mostly "hyper" compressed beyond belief and you can't tell where the region is. Smaller layouts compel one to model more specifically to the railroad in my experience.
Boomer, I've been watching you since the Dairy Queen build on Glover Road which, incidentally, was the first time I saw a scratch build of a model of any kind. Been hooked on your content since. I toyed for a long time with the idea of bulding a shelf layout but for various reasons I've settled on building 1/48th scale armor and 1/72 aircraft and that's probably where I'll stay. That said, your methods have helped my make the odd M4 Sherman or F-16 look that much better.
I'm closing in on twenty years as a high school history teacher and can say with absolute confidence that you're a master educator. I appreciate the nuances of your craftsmanship, your openness to show how it's done, and to your ability to inspire layman. Mission accomplished. This channel is your magnus opus.
Nothing wrong with the other scales. In fact, the military 1/48 scale stuff is quite cool. You can scratch build sheds and buildings in that scale quite effectively as well. Glad to hear you are enjoying the hobby and thank you for supporting the channel the way you do. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Looking so good, I like all the teasers of the ship you are giving us! My wife gives honest opinions of my work too! It's funny how they say out loud the very thing that you had in the back of your mind that was bugging you :D
Often times the things in the back of my mind I try to ignore and so I force them on myself with wishful thinking. Wishful thinking doesn't fix things though . . . lol. I redo things often if I don't like them. I guess this is why it takes so long to finish a scene on the model railroad. ;-)

Simply incredible! And your point about smaller shelf layouts - created as dioramas as if we are really there - is what I needed to hear as I was lamenting the fact that I only have a 2.75 m / 9 ft x 3.7 m / 12 ft bedroom office to work with, and sloped ceilings starting at 112 cm / 44 in above floor level.
So, after watching and listening to your video a second time, I actually feel liberated, and challenged to see how I can compress a few carefully chosen RR served industries into my small space, and enjoy adding those little details that will bring my layout to life (-instead of cluttering it with as much stuff as possible).

In the UK we have small houses with no room. So shelf layouts are very common. I model narrow gauge because narrow gauge lines just have smaller infrastructure. And with a small layout you can model the world and all the details and not just the railway.
I understand that. You can still model a scene from a larger standard gauge railroad and it will still convey the "spirit" and feel of the larger concept. We never see the whole railroad . . . ever . . . at once anyway. ;-)

I was bored one night, so I whittled them out of styrene plastic rod. I threw away half of them and kept the best ones. Next time I'll just buy the little devils . . . lol.

The more I work on this ship the more I learn about it. She was very special and had quite a career. There are UA-cam videos out there as well on the real Princess. Try " Seaspan Carrier Princess" for keyword search. ;-)

I did check out some of the videos of the real life Seaspan Carrier Princess hoping to see them load it with railcars, but unfortunately all I have been able to find so far is the ship being loaded with trucks and trailers. On the positive side, I was able to see the view looking from the ship deck to the ferry apron which gave a great view of the clutter of items along the sides of the ship, and your representation of this scene is spot on. The jacks, the anchor housings, ropes and more, putting a photo of your model next to a photo of the real ship most of us would think they are just views of two different real ships. So job well done Sir!

I do have one question - is this layout your Magnum Opus or is your mind scanning the galaxies for a future project?
I have no other layout in plan other than this one for now.
The future for me is the other sections I have not built yet. It's an open ended story based on my experiences around this prototype railroad. It's the ultimate escape after a hard day at the office for me. When you build in this shelf (Diorama) style genre, the opportunities and options are endless. ;-)

Will the “Princess” be permanently attached or will you move it in and out of the scene for operations? I’ve been following since Glover Road, I was disappointed to see it go, river road is amazing. My wife and I rode on the Rocky Mountaineer beginning our trip in Vancouver. Except for the smoke from the wildfires it was a perfect trip to special place. The river the mountains the wildlife amazing!
Yes it will. The Ferry mounts up like a "staging" cassette. The cars are loaded or unloaded for operations. Loaded they disappear into drawer. Unloaded they become bridge traffic for River Road. Glover Road is in storage and the layout hangs on the wall. ;-)
What happened with the Tug build
Nothing. It's waiting it's turn. The Ferry was in the plan long before the Tug ever was. The Ferry is a functional component, the Tug is just for show. ;-)
Do they move the locomotive onto the ferry? I always thought dummy cars were used.
The prototype photo shows the locomotive on the ferry. So yes, sometimes they do. Mostly they use "idler" flat cars for loading and off loading.
How you did and what material you used to do the road between the rails in the ferry ?
Liquitex sand paste, ceramic paste, and crackle paste. You can order it from "Intercity Trains & Hobbies" Just look up their webpage, phone them and they will sell it to you. The stuff is awesome for pavement textures, etc.
