Thanks for the info I love you videos I did some custom work on a rivarossi mallet you might like . This is the video link ua-cam.com/video/wgqEQxQS49c/v-deo.html. Let me know what you think .
Use a roller and pan on wide flat surfaces. RRing is Fun ☁️☁️☁️

Much more interesting than the super bowl.
Lol
Amen to that!!😂
super what?
Oh was there a Hockey game going on today? he he..... Thanks!!
I hope both teams lose
That’s one of the nice things about the hobby. A person can change their mind on something and be out very little as most things can be recycled. I too like switching. But sometimes it’s nice to be able to run a locomotive on a loop to break it in, or make sure things are all good after a rebuild.
Yup. used most of the old layout wood and plywood, track, switches, etc. Just lost the cork that I glued down. I'm gunna get some rollers to run in loco's
Your original layout was nice, but your updated layout will be more "operation friendly". You did a great job on the cork and track demonstration. Great idea on painting the cork gray. This is a definite "how to" video everyone can save to their favorites. You always show us techniques that are easy to understand and do on our own. Thank you!
Thanks once again for you kind words!!
Looks amazing Ron. Can’t wait for the next video. Also the blue light on your train display looks awesome!
Thanks 👍. The blue looks like it made the sensor in my camera wonky.
I never knew you had a 1972 Chevy K20. I love it.
Thanks. Good eye you have there. Most think it's a C-10
A+ is your Grade on this Video! You are really thinking this layout out and what was good and bad about the last layout! Keep up the great work and video's coming!
A+.... Thank you so much Mark :-)
Howdy there neighbor. Oh this is great. Edutainment at its best. Ron!...you rock. The only downside to living in Elko NV is lack of resources for model railroading so you are my go to for figuring out this enjoyably annoying habit.
Hello Cody, I have a Cuz'n who lives in Elko, NV. She's an accountant / tax preparer person. Thanks for your kind words Sir!!
Great. video Ron. Daunting to tear down and start over, but your new layout is inspirational.
Thanks Rick!
Hi Ron,
There are some other NCE holders that hold the unit from the head not the bottom.
If you are interested I can send you a pic.
I have a friend that has been making them for me in is 3D printer.
Love your channel, you give me a good laugh with the reality of it all.
Keep up the great work.
Ant.
Thanks for the compliments
I have to say that your channel is number one on my list to watch. Keep up the wonderful videos and have a good one.
Thank you very much!
Lynn Westcott of Model Railroader Fame invented the L girder method of layout Construction. Model Railroader train at railroad model Craftsman railfan they were all such great magazine when people still read.
Well his invention makes a lot of sense to me. Very easy to make, very light and strong, and very modular.
I saw a Tyco 4-6-2 Chessie on your wall. I want it! LOL
They are a great looking loco!!
That first one you brought up was one I saw too!! I’m going to try it as part of my expansion later this year.
A lot of cool switching idea's out there on the internet!
Looks great! Love it!
Thanks :-)
Thank you for the update. Looks like it will be a great design. I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you very much
Wonderful video. You are always a joy to watch and your videos keep getting better.
Thank you so much! :-)
Glad I found your channel, awesome work!
Welcome aboard!
Very nice video thanks 😀
Most welcome 😊
Since I'm a Central of Georgia modeler, I subscribed to your channel and I think now I will watch all your old videos and see what I can learn. I really enjoy your videos. I've noticed that you have taken on some of the characteristics of Derik from VGG. Cheers from eastern TN
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for sharing. Nice tips and tricks. 👍
My pleasure 😊
Very nice!
Thanks!
Looks awesome Ron!
Enjoy.
Thanks 👍
Just found your channel, and wow! You have awesome videos on here!
Thanks so much!
Nice job on the new 2.0 layout!, just subscribed and I'm hooked on your channel!!, big greetings from down under in New Zealand!...keep up the great work
Thanks for your kind words and subbing to my channel, Greetings from a bit north of you....Montana USA
Good video. Lots of useful information. Look forward to the wiring and further updates
Thank you :-)
Love this Video.

Great video, very inspirational!
She's Jerry Hall. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Looks great, love the cork ideas. The little lady has done a great job painting your legs.......🚂
Thanks 👍
Looks like a fun layout! It looks good as well! It's nice to have a supportive spouse or lady friend in this hobby.
Yup! guess she's glad I'm not sitting in a bar somewhere.
Thanks Ron!
Thanks for watching!
Man! You have a great channel 👍 I can’t believe it took this long to find you, but I’m glad I did plus looks like your Chevy guy 😃
Awesome! Thank you! Glad you found my channel. The Chevy is my current "project". I cut my teeth on Mopar
@@classicmodeltrains lol 😂 Mopar is definitely a teeth cutter 👍
Layout is looking good Ron.
Thank you!
Looks great Ron! Thanks for the info!!
Thanks for watching
Layout looks like it will be great!! Winter calls a halt our vintage style double oval layout here. Spring will allow my son and I to get back on track, pun intended. The shelf looks great!!
Hi Ron. I love the video. I'll miss the looping layout. I would have guessed a room addition before you demo the layout. LOL. Looking forward to the wiring series. DC & DCC. Thanks brother. Your videos help me out a lot. Loving this new hobby. I might do the Ebay thing too. Bought too much stuff not knowing. Huge learning curve. I got it now though. I like the Athearn blue box kits. I've built a lot of my rolling stock and upgrade them at the same time. Take care. Gary K
Greetings Gary, Thanks for stopping by for a view, and a comment. Yup them learning curves in this hobby go up and down alot! :-)
Scrap the Caddy Clyde! Love that movie lol.
It gets better the older I get :-)
Great video Ron! It took some serious thought, but you felt it deep in your gut that you needed a change, and did the right thing!! Great job! That beautiful woman is one of my favorites from the late 1970’s, Jerry Hall! I always envied Mick Jagger back in the day when they were together. LOL
Thank you! You are correct on the model. Cant believe Mick landed that. Must be great to be a rock star.
The hours I spent with the Cork roadbed and the ballast and the glue. I could not believe how much a little box of gravel cost at The Hobby Shop. Just like with k d coupler never going through that again.
Ballasting is very time hungry. I don't get the Kadee thing either. Horn hooks work just fine for me.
@@classicmodeltrains KD couplers are more realistic but for years I got by with just the regular horn hook coupler. Not being into switching I would be satisfied with just dummy couplers. Bottom impc Lionel trains I superglue the couplers permanently shut and cut off the Thumbtack so it does not short on the third rail which it does on curves sometimes it would get caught. I have one brass Hopper car in 0 scale and of course it has a scale coupler it is so tiny compared to the Lionel type coupler.
Love your Intro.
Thank you :-)
Very nice!
I’m still working on my layout.
I seriously doubt I will ever be finished with it, because I’m constantly trying new or better ideas.
My objective is a layout with both a fiddle yard or yards, and loop.
Maybe even throw in some shelf layouts.
Right now, I’m kinda in a malaise mood and just enjoy watching the locos pull as many cars as they possibly can.
Plus lashing them together so I can pull even longer trains.
You gave me some great ideas!
Thanks again!
Thanks Jeb. Sounds like you will have a pretty nice layout when its all done!
Very nice. I really appreciate your detail explanations. Looking forward to the wiring and setup of DC and DCC. I believe you said your wife painted the framing black. Very good, it looks really nice.
Thank you! I'll pass on your kind words to the "little Lady" :-)
Hey Ron!
New to the channel. I loved they way you're road bed came out. So I ran out and bought a can of grey primer and did a test on my Foam Road bed. Your grey came out lighter and mine was darker and the foam doesn't really look like rocks on the sides. So I guess its the cork and a lighter grey?
Guess where I'm going to buy ACE Gray primer and road bed cork!
I love watching and it's helped me a lot.
Peace my friend!
Greetings Frederick! Welcome to my channel. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah that spray paint idea came out better than I ever thought it would. I hope you get your road bed to were you want it :-)
love this channel
Thank you so much :-)
Great job again. Can't wait to build something bigger. Have to finish house first. Adding 2story . When that's done will start my hobby room. Have few hobbies. Trains , RC cars (nitro and electric) drones and rockets 🚀. Can't wait for it all to be completed.
Thank you. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Very busy Feller. Hoping the re-model on the house is quick and painless
BRAVO! The Jefferson's used to say, MOVIN ON UP!
👍
You got that right! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Now this is awesome. Going old school track laying(like here) is best in most cases. I myself just use the EZ-track method only because of space limitations and budget reasons. My own layout will be a switching/logging industry ,shelf layout of 1' x 8' when done.
Thanks. Seems were always dealing with space limitations, no mater how much space you have
I will miss the old layout Ron but I’m glad you found a plan which you intend on using more and that you end up liking better. I think that’s the most rewarding thing of model railroading is being able to do things that you please. And in the end of it if you still aren’t happy you can always try again! But it’s great to see you drive into the world of so many things. I’m really happy you got the space to do this! I’m working on modular style layout design and already built two spots. I gotta finish the ends and get some radii put down. I want a 30” but probably won’t be able to do it at nearly that large. All will be set up and easily taken down. Thanks for the inspiration to build a good looking layout. Can’t wait to see it done!!!
Thanks Marc, Good luck on you modular also! Would love to see pics :-)
@@classicmodeltrains I’d be more than happy to send some. Forgot to mention I’m back on fb so I should send you a request, I’d like to keep in touch! Hope to see more soon brother!
Nice. I like the A-A units.
Thanks!
I just use construction paper and I tape it down to the plywood I use white for building foundations and sidewalks and I use black for asphalt. I get two sheets of paper for a dollar real cheap
Yup I tried that. I wanted to go this route and see how well it looks and what not.
Stupendous.
Thank you :-)
You did a great job ripping it out, planning and rebuilding into something better and crammed it all into one video. Most guys could have made 10 videos out of this, lol. Looks like a good plan and it will give you the operations you want. Nice job. Oh yeah, Mick’s squeeze.
Glad you liked it! and you are correct
I think that is Kerri Hall
Great channel love the new layout design
Your so close I will give it to ya anyway, Jerry Hall. Thanks for your kind words
Bravo, Ron! ‘Bout time you got around to thinking about operation of your wonderful models! Nice video showing your track laying method, too. Like the other guy said, “better than the Super Bowl.” That just gives me a headache with all the action and commercials and such. Too much! Watching and listening to you is more entertaining. Now I can hardly wait to see your first “revenue run.” Hope you get to it soon!
Thanks so much 13th, I gave up watching football when they gave up standing for our anthem.
@@classicmodeltrains I couldn’t agree with you more. I have the same sentiments Ron!! They should put on a real camouflage uniform and try kneeling in front of a drill sergeant. That won’t go to well for them.
Ron, nothing but respect but you're my king of off beat.
I'm planning a 3 to 4 different gauges layout (N, HO, O, and 3.25" live steam). The N, HO, and O will be inside the 3.25" will be inside/outside. I need some guidance with layout design software. Any suggestions?
Ron, I kinda liked the old layout as I am a person that wants to see my trains go around from time to time instead of back and forth.. but I do get the train of your thoughts.. haha pun intended there... I loved the yards and ladder system you had and I think I might replicate something like that for my layout, as I have a lot of engines and rolling stock and would like to leave a certain amount of them out on display instead of hidden in draws as you mentioned.. I do like the shadow display box behind you with all of your engines and some rolling stock on show, that is a great idea. I personally am not a scenic person I just want to lay tracks and play trains ..... I have no specific railway system in mind just an imaginary layout to suit the space I have. Another great and informative video and I am glad I have found your channel a while back and follow along since. Cheers from Melbourne Australia.... Tim.
G-day Tim from Melbourne! Thank you for stopping by my channel awhile ago and liking what I do enough to earn your Sub!! I really liked that first layout but I could not reach the back. it was 4 feet wide. Not a lot of room for buildings on it as well. It's always a battle between what size of layout you want and how much room do you have. I do miss that big ladder on the first one. BUT......This layout is just a interim until I get a new facility to put the Final layout in (hopefully) Greetings from way up North in Montana, USA :-)
Nice job on the choice to move forward with improving the layout by addressing the old issues. Subscribed and purchased a car, thanks and keep it up!
Thanks for the sub! You purchased a car from me? Well thank you again, and if you purchased a new automobile, congratulations!
@@classicmodeltrains purchased the car from your ebay store lol!
No one ever mentions to paint the bottom of modules or a layout light gray or white. It makes it much easier see when working under the layout.
I agree with you. That would make seeing better during wiring jobs. I use a big LED work light to see. I also did not paint the underneath of the layout. Just the visible legs and facia parts :-)
Fantastic.were just on the eve of shelf layout construction here. Rapido GO Transit as the focus with a timed departure&arrival. Still watching🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
Thanks. Your shelf plan sounds pretty cool!!
Nice, I haved one sometime blocking the access to the circuit box, have to remove it to somewhere else, when a bad circuit breaker goes crazy the technician he doesn't want climb on over the main street of my layout to fix it , hope everything goes well, love yours videos
Thanks for your kind words. I made the layout fit just under the breaker panel main cover. Good thing I'm my own electrician. I can work around all the stuff I put in front of it :-)
You had a nice layout, probably with same limitations that were boring you. Hope you enjoy the next one Ron. The work done on it is good, very good til now. Keep working my friend!
Greetings my Friend. Seems every job that is completed, a person learns how to do the next one better. My patience grows as I age, I now have the ability to do the proper prep work and details in the right order to make a much better finished project.
welcome to TRUE model railroading, where you tear down and do a rebuild. They say the average for rebuilds (even patial) is about 7
7!!! holy moly! Well I suppose that seems about right. Always learning stuff as you go. Each re-do is better than the last
Great!!! Content for 6 more future videos!!!
Even the painting of the underside of the layout adds that finished look that takes it up a notch or two. I was figuring I would skip that on mine for time savings but I can see the error of my thinking.
Only the visible parts of the legs and support is painted. The actual "underside" of the plywood and 1X4 framing is still wood colored. Ive been called "anal" in the past but even that is to much for me :-)
I enjoy watching you build. When will part 2 of this build be out?
Thank you very much. It's gunna take some time to get enough "stuff" done to make a full video. probably a month or so down the road.
Yes some times you have to make a move and change every thing to have more fun
Sometimes :-)
ty
:-)
Well, I think we have the same sort of luck-if I have a derailment, it ALWAYS happens in the back of the layout. I can reach the back of mine, for the most part, with one of those Harbor Freight Grab Tools. Not easy when a locomotive derails in the back though. I think it is common for derailments always to occur in the worst place sir. I am subscribing so that I can see the next incarnation of your layout.
Yup! always the farthest / hardest area. Thanks for watching and subscribing :-)
Well, your "Classic Model" has stumped me!
Jerry Hall
Ron have you thought about a ceiling layout that goes up and down in elevation? You could easily run a O scale and a couple HO lines on a ceiling shelf.
I have a G scale on the ceiling in the basement. But I made the shelf wide enough to switch to two O scale lines if I want later.
I have though about it. I have a lot of studio lights and rigging in this little cabin taking up ceiling space. But one could re-work it and make it happen
@@classicmodeltrains
I think you could do a double decker hanging shelf loop. Hanging 12 to 16 inches off the ceiling. My g scale hangs 12 inches is all. I still have 7 foot clearance. And there are some incredible bridge designs out there that I know you could build.

Thank you :-)
I have the factory building. Its the fugging tyco pickle building but plainer
Pola from Germany was the manufacturer of the Tyco building kits. I'm not familiar with the pickle building kit.
Well done…
Thank you!
It’s funny, I built a permanent layout once. I got board with it and demolished it. I haven’t done one since. I just make temporary layouts now. I’m much happier that way. I wish you the best with your new layout
Thats another thing that makes this a great hobby. So many ways to enjoy doing it. Do what makes you happy is what I've been told :-)
Are you going to York. Bet you'd be a hit....😊
What's York?
always sucks ripping up a layout, yet what we all learn after time id how to make it better, for you ,,
Change is sometimes good :-)
when laying flex track and joining to another flex piece, cut back one section so the joint is not at the curve. that way, there is never a kink. the leftover piece can be used on a siding.
I tried that but this curve was so long it ended up using the piece of flex and I still had a bit more curve to go.
Amazing vid and something I can relate to a little bit with layout regret, but my first layout was started at my parents' house so I just decided not to tear it down and do my own once I get my own place (I'm in college right now.) Will you ever put in helixes for continuous running?
Thanks. I won't say I will never use helixes, but this current plan won't be using them.
@@classicmodeltrains the helix keeps trains in operation out of view, and helps with the illusion of going somewhere. if the helix doesn't appeal to you, moving the layout away from the wall can provide a narrow staging area to store trains and to make up trains, a decorated partition can keep it out of view.
@@suppylarue220 the space I’m in is so small. Camera makes it look larger than it really is. Maybe one day I’ll have a large metal building to house all of this.
I like it. I like it a lot. But, doesn't leaving the cork out of the switch yard present a dipping problem???
Good evening Brad. Yes it does. the track will be shimmed for stability. Bonus....the cars won't roll out onto the main by them selves :-)
I have a question for you Ron. I know you are re-doing your layout, so you are busy. I'm in no hurry. I have a 21160 that runs really hot. After 15 minutes you can't touch it. Even the chassis gets very warm. I have had the armature out and everything runs smooth. There is no drag at all. The only thing I haven't done is re-wire everything from the tender to the locomotive. Have any ideas? I come to you because you impress me with your knowledge. I love your videos. Oh--the output voltage from the transformer is between 10 and 16 volts. No overload there. New brushes and springs. Thanks.
I would love to give you some ideas but I need to know what a 21160. Manufacturer, gauge, etc….. :-)
Imagine how nice it would be if all of those HO scale locomotives for Diecast instead of plastic. If you had diecast cars you would need to have better motor instead of when you have lightweight plastic cars. Everything would be so much more realistic because it's actual metal
Would not be as detailed. Unless its made out of brass
Dang Ron sometimes ya just gotta pull the trigger & go for it , say I've heard you talk about collector prices like some of our old yellow box Athearn or Red box Tyco & Mantua Varney could you elaborate on books or sites my Grandkids & I could spend time with?
The "O", "O-27" and American flyer "O" and "S" stuff has books written about there current prices for collectors, But I have yet to find any books for any manufacturer of "H.O." stuff. Obviously there collectable because people are doing it. I use eBay "sold" items to gauge the current price people are paying for particular items
@@classicmodeltrains Thanks Man that's kinda what we've done however some there's just no Priors
I’m gonna take a que from the folding platform you made before, so I can build a layout I can tinker with after the holidays and stay out of the Mrs.s way(you know). How’s the engine build goin? Thanks
That little folding one I was pretty proud of. Very light to move, and not real thick when folded down. Could fit under a bed. That dang 350 has been a pill forever. Nothing I can't solve by throwing more money at it. It runs. It's in that orange and white chevy pickup from my intro's
You have what look like Voltage and Ampere meters on your layout. How are they connected?
I made a video of that installation. here's the link ua-cam.com/video/pHHfx6OZr2M/v-deo.html.
Great video Ron! This might help me with my limited space! Thanks!!

Quick question what is best way to remove paint off metal wheels without harsh chemicals?
I use my ultrasonic cleaner and simple green. Perhaps a vinegar and salt soak would do it also.
I like good old Atlas snap track I just wish I had 22 radius on the Outer Loop instead of 18 but what can you do
I like the 36" flex. less drops to solder in
How long it takes to put it together and how short it is to take it down.
Yup! came down quick!!
10:00 Ooops. You forgot to file down the ends of the rails before you solder them. I know in one video you would file the ends at a slight angle to help keep cars on the rails.
No wonder that joint is so noisy! ;-)
I've had some regrets in the past building a few of my train layouts I know what it's like
Always nice to change things
What type of nails did u use when u lay down the cork roadbed?
Same little nails I use to hold down the track.
@@classicmodeltrains Do you know what type of small nails you use?
@@RAND-233 Track nails for HO. Get them at A Hobby shop or amazon
Are you extending the baseboard at the right end? At 13:31 the top points are the end-of-track which seems pointless (pun intended) as there is no space to run beyond them to change tracks.
Temporary board with tracks will be installed for operations. Good eye you have there!

Thanks for attempting to look. I do not have a store, its just seller name "classicmodeltrains". Perhaps people cant look up individual sellers, I might need to do a "store". The learning curve for me using the new and improved Ebay is quite steep :-)
try this:
From the eBay home page, click Advanced next to the search bar.
Then click Sellers under Items on the left-hand side.
Check the box beside Only Show items from and enter the name of the seller ID to find them on eBay.
Lastly, click Search to see the seller's listings.
