  • In thisvideo, we delve into the intriguing world of Aleister Crowley, a highly controversial figure often synonymous with the occult, mysticism, and the esoteric. Crowley's work has left a profound and lasting impact on the realms of modern witchcraft and Wicca, and it is essential for every practitioner to understand this influence.
    From his early life to his eventual spiritual journey, this video takes you through Crowley's fascinating and complex narrative, exploring the theories, philosophies, and rituals that he introduced and that have come to shape significant portions of contemporary witchcraft.
    Crowley's creation of Thelema, a spiritual philosophical tradition, has sparked both interest and controversy in equal measure. We will unravel the teachings of Thelema, explore its principles, and decipher how it intertwines with Wicca and other forms of modern witchcraft.
    We also touch on his infamous works such as "The Book of the Law" and "Magick in Theory and Practice" to elucidate the way they've inspired modern magical practices. Crowley's association with the tarot, particularly the Thoth deck, and its profound influence on divination practices will also be discussed.
    Although a polarizing figure, understanding Crowley's influence is crucial to grasp the evolution of modern witchcraft and Wicca. Whether you consider him a spiritual innovator or a controversial enigma, his impact on the world of the occult is undeniable.

    Thank you, Mannun. Didn't know much about Crowley to be honest but thank you for shedding some light on his work and how he paved the way for so many others. I know his name is riddled with controversy but that seems to be true for many in the occult. All we can do is go with what we feel is true and try to be our best selves. Blessings

    Great video. Crowley's ideas aren't for everyone, and neither is Thalema, and that is OK! What isn't OK is all the disinformation that goes around.
    More videos like this are needed, and you are working to fill a hole here. Thank you for this.
    One thing that confuses people I think is that Crowley was a troll. I think he intentionally trolled people as a teaching and vetting method. If you believe things at face value and get offended, Thalema likely isn't your path, and that is OK. If you dig through all the spooky stuff and sus out your own meaning and use it as inspiration to carve out your own path, Thalema may be the path for you. Maybe not. My opinion.

    There are pros and cons to making videos from home. But it was still great. Interesting, educational...great. Thank you Mannun! 😊P.S. nice hair today😉

    Mannun: Thank you for a balanced account of the contraversial Aleister Crowley. I had, in the beginning of discovering his part in modern day magic been rather appalled and frightened of him . All that I knew was the misinformation and B.S. surrounding him. Being a Led Zep fan (axemen are my fave musicians) especially of 1 Jimmy Page, I understood he was a a fan of Mr Crowley. And oh boy, did the British gutter press make a meal of that!! Jimmy was pilloried and made to be some kind of perverse character and Satanist when in fact he was simply a sensitive artistic type (like many talented people be they musicians, painter, sculptors) and all because of dropping Crowley's name. Remember this was the 1970's many years after Crowley's death. I really like your account of his practices here in this video. I also can understand the outrage in Victorian England: the most sexually repressed population EVER!!! If I lived then I would be baying for Crowley's blood. But here I am a most grateful crone (born in the 50's) and taught by the most incredible witches on the other side of the worlds in New Zealand. Blessed be , dear brother

      Fun fact about the Victorians: there were actually more brothels than Churches in London at this time. There were even guidebooks printed, listing their locations, specialities, and had a rating system much like hotels and restaurants today.

    Thank you for doing Crowley justice by clarifying a lot of misconceptions and giving much information about what he was really about. He was a flawed person, yes, but who isn’t? Thelemites regard him as a prophet, but not as an object of worship. We take what he taught and apply it towards ourselves. He pushed the limits of life and life’s experiences and learned through trial and error so he had a basis for his students to take root. Crowley gave us the foundation and tools needed to build, with expectation that his students build our own structure as high and as strong as we will. I’ve studied and practiced Thelema for the last 5 years, and witchcraft for 2 years, and it’s helped me grow so much as a person, and as occultist / witch. I’m amazed how much hate Crowley gets even in todays world.

    I have practiced ceremonial majick and traditional (folk) majick for 60 years, so I know whereof I speak. Let me interpret what you said especially about Gardner. What he learned from his initiation into the New Forest Coven was so inadequate that he incorporated practices from ceremonial majick, the Golden Dawn, the OTO, Free Masonry, and directly from Crowley to fabricate what became modern Wicca. That seems problematic. Crowley, I believe, exhibited all the qualities of a narcissist and he reveled in it. I'm sure that history gives a good record that his influence on those closest to him was destructive and that he was pretty much a pain in them bum to everyone around him - there was no agape in him. My educated opinion. Blessings.

    @LailokenScathach 9 місяців тому

    Great video, but I have a few questions. If you do not mind
    1.) What is your source that Gardner was initiated into the OTO? I am in knowledge that Gardner was given an OTO Charter (pg. 192 - "Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration", Chapter 9, Aleister Crowley and the OTO. - Philip Heselton) it was not an initiation.
    2.) To my understanding the "OTO" was not founded by Crowley - but again, I am curious of your source as my knowledge on this is limited.
    3.) Thelema: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, Love is the law, love under will. There is no law besides do what thou will." is COMPLETELY different from Gardner.
    Gardner's: "Do what you like so long as you harm no one" later evolving into the Wiccan Rede of "An it harm none, do what you will" stems from Gardner's reading of fictional good King Pausol (pg. 108 "Chapter VIII: Magical Thinking, The Meaning of Witchcraft," - Gerald Gardner.). Both sayings, although similar in sentence structure are completely different conceptually.
    Yes, they sound similar but they are two very different concepts.
    This was indeed a great video, sans a few confusing bits that hopefully you can clarify.
    Thanks for this and please keep up the Great Work. :)

    • @WitchNTheWorking
      @WitchNTheWorking  9 місяців тому +1

      1.) You are correct in pointing out that Gerald Gardner received an OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis) charter from Aleister Crowley, rather than undergoing a formal initiation into the OTO. According to Philip Heselton's "Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration," specifically on page 192 in chapter 9, Gardner was indeed granted a charter by Crowley, which authorized him to promote and oversee OTO activities in a specific region. This charter did not equate to an initiation into the order's inner rituals or membership; rather, it was an administrative authorization. While Gardner had deep connections with Crowley and was heavily influenced by his work and the OTO, the relationship was primarily organizational and collaborative rather than Gardner being an initiated member of the OTO.
      2.) Aleister Crowley did not found the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO). The OTO was originally founded in the early 20th century, around 1901, by Carl Kellner and Theodor Reuss in Germany. It was established as a fraternal and religious organization that synthesized various esoteric, philosophical, and religious doctrines. Aleister Crowley became associated with the OTO in 1910, several years after its founding. He was initially introduced to the organization by Theodor Reuss, who recognized the similarities between the rituals Crowley had developed for his own esoteric order, the A∴A∴, and those of the OTO. Reuss subsequently appointed Crowley as the head of the OTO in Britain and later, Crowley became the leader of the organization worldwide. Under Crowley's leadership, the OTO incorporated the principles of his philosophical system, Thelema, and underwent significant transformation in its teachings and structure. This historical context shows that while Crowley was a pivotal figure in the development and expansion of the OTO, especially in integrating his Thelemic philosophy into its doctrines, he was not its founder.
      3.) You have made an insightful observation about the philosophical differences between Thelema and Gardner's Wiccan ethics. You are absolutely right in noting the conceptual differences between Aleister Crowley's Thelemic maxim and Gerald Gardner's adaptation in Wicca. While both phrases share a structural resemblance, their underlying philosophies diverge significantly. Crowley’s maxim, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law, love under will. There is no law besides do what thou wilt," from Thelema, focuses on the individual's pursuit of their true will or ultimate purpose, emphasizing personal freedom and responsibility. This is not merely a license for hedonism but a complex mandate for finding and following one's true path in life, underlined by the principle that this path should be pursued with love and in service to one's true will. On the other hand, Gerald Gardner’s interpretation, which later evolved into the Wiccan Rede of "An it harm none, do what you will," places a clear ethical boundary on personal freedom. Inspired by a line from a fictional account of good King Pausole, this guideline stresses that one's actions should avoid causing harm to others. It advocates for freedom but within the context of responsibility towards others and the world, which contrasts with Thelema’s emphasis on the primacy of the individual will. Both philosophies advocate for personal freedom but approach its implications and limits very differently. Gardner’s Wiccan Rede introduces a more communal and ethical consideration, suggesting a balance between personal liberty and the impact of one’s actions on others and the world around them.

    You should also explore where the K came from in the term Magick.

    • @WitchNTheWorking
      @WitchNTheWorking  10 місяців тому

      The letter "K" was added to the word "magic" to form "magick" by Aleister Crowley in the early 20th century. Crowley wanted to differentiate the occult or ceremonial magic he practiced from stage magic performed by magicians for entertainment. By adding the "K," Crowley intended to emphasize the spiritual and ritualistic aspects of his practices, distinguishing them from mere sleight of hand or illusions. The use of "magick" with a "K" has since been adopted by various modern occultists and practitioners of theurgy to signify their focus on the supernatural and metaphysical elements of their practices.
