- Tom Brokaw's latest book, "Never Give Up," is a loving tribute to his family who headed west after the Civil War, and to other hard-working people of the Plains States whose stoic outlook built America's Midwest. The former NBC newsman talks with "Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley about his parents, how Brokaw himself found the origins of his own success in a tiny town in South Dakota, and how he has persisted against an incurable form of blood cancer.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Have to admit I was a little shocked at the change in him - I somehow missed his diagnosis announcement. Tom Brokaw is outstanding in his field, but my most meaningful memory was his comforting presence following 9/11. I would curl up in a blanket and watch until he signed off for the night, finding emotional refuge in a world that no longer felt safe. Grateful for all you’ve done in your career.
journalists dont become the news
That’s the whole goal of their propaganda. ❤
@@JamieNixx we are talking about a different Era , child.
I did too and came across a piece of their interview while scrolling 🎉
@@JamieNixxare you serious? You’re totally off base with this one. Maybe the current right wing media but certainly not journalists like Brokaw, Jennings and Rather. They reported the news, like it was, without biased commentary.
Tom fighting lymphoma and Jane diagnosed living with bipolar disorder for decades. And they are both admirable, amazing people.
Tom has multiple myeloma.
@@LocustIvyhe has lived for ten years. He has the best medical care he can afford it
@@BillBraz-b9o$ doesn't make CANCER easier
I did not know Jane was bipolar, but ❤❤ & blessings to both
@@BillBraz-b9o how mean.... My lifelong friend had MM. She lived for 12 years in MORTAL PAIN... She was/ never was RICH in$$$. But, Super RICH in JESUS!
What a legend! Could listen to him talk all day. Miss you Tom, NBC hasn't been the same without you.
You are right.... Now we have a black guy that talks with his teeth cringed
*"You get things done by getting them done."* Yup, you got that right Tom.
I have watched Mr Brokaw for 40 years. He is a great reporter. He always handled his stories with real knowledge and compassion and class. You are missed!
My two most favorite anchors in one interview! I'm not sure we'll ever see that much integrity in news any more.
Seeing Tom & Jane is just like spending time with our own family! Because they are part of our lives. 🥰🌻
And they both look so good!😘🌷
Like they were right there with you in your living room
Being blacklisted by family
So much respect for this man. Thank you Mr. Brokaw for all your tears of hard work!
I'm so glad he's still with us, and imparting wisdom, sharing stories. What a legend.
wisdom? lol....
...agenda
Tom Brokaw is surely one of the best news journalists to grace the television screen. His colleagues: Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, and Walter Cronkite are what i would call Real journalists. The news used to be 1 hour instead of entertainment and insipid spots of miscellaneous trivia. It was an exciting evening of learning about the news of the day, and it was presented with factual information that could be trusted. Nowadays, most networks are putting out lies just to appeal to a particular agenda. I long for intelligent journalism of 20-30 years ago. So much more informative and newsworthy.
How about his comments about Hispanics and brown babies??
@@bigtimepimpin666 How about your blind ignorance?
What about

Jane and Tom: Two amazing Midwesterners who have been in the public eye longer than most politicians and celebrities of their generation.
So agree.
@@marywatkins6798 Think of all the "celebrities" and "world leaders" who have come and gone during Jane and Tom's time on TV.
Awful people. He harassed and sexually abused women for years. Jane looked other way Nbc fired Tom and refused to promote his books
So true.
God is as cruel as "His people."
Two friends talking about Tom’s life. It could not have been any more enjoyable. Always have admired both Tom and Jane. Both are national treasures.
An American Icon. I grew up with Mr.Brokaw delivering the news to our family every evening. What a great man. Thank you for this interview! ❤
I always thought he left the anchor desk too early, and now it hurts to see him get old like this. But then I remember that he's basically the same age as my dad... The difference is my dad hasn't had to deal with cancer. I'm glad he's still around, and still writing.
One of the classiest gentlemen to ever anchor the news.
Absolutely!!
What an extraordinary life! What character, integrity, humanity. A great man.
I agree 100 Percent,.:)
Integrity?

I have great memories of Tom and Jane delivering the daily news. They are from the generation that had integrity and earned the respect of millions of loyal viewers. I wish nothing but the best for them and their families.
Yes, it’s that integrity and respect that seems to now be nonexistent. I miss those days. Love Tom and Jane always.

Yes, they gave the story which was realistic and not such a toxic environment. I miss this type of news. Peter Jennings for ABC and the other Greats just sad. I really enjoyed this short piece.
Exactly right.
Sorely missed ❣❣❣ Intelligence, Integrity, Tenacity just to scratch the surface of this admirable Man. So happy to see these 2 together once more
I agree. Seeing them together brings back good memories when they reported the news years ago.
What a lovely story. Mr. Brokaw is one of our greatest journalists. God bless him.
This was so special. He is so important to the fabric of our lives. A National Treasure. Loved.
I watched him my entire young life - his voice is unforgettable . What a man!!
My Dad also had multiple myeloma, sadly with a worse outcome. It’s so good to see my journalist-hero working at living his life. God bless you, Mr Brokaw. 🙏🏼 ♥️
As a teen in the 70s I enjoyed Mr Brokaw as a commentator and Jane as his sidekick. Such a wonderful era of TV. Great Post !!
We used to actually watch the network news every evening, and we believed it. He is the greatest! He was always my choice.
Tom Brokaw, truly an inspiration for all of us. The Brokaw family has a great family legacy. So, very well respected and admired by everyone who has ever met him. He is truly one of our National Treasures. Thanks Tom!
He was a fixture in my childhood, my parents were news junkies, back when we had real news. LOVE him
Tom was the Harrison Ford of the nightly news of my youth. So sad what's happened to him (bittersweet pictures of him and Jane as young anchors). Thanks for the books and the epic work; blessings to you and your family!
That is an insult to Brokaw.
What a great analogy! I was a teenager in the 90’s and had a huge a crush on Tom Brokaw, years later I told my coworker about it and he made light fun of me. But your comment finally vindicated me, he was a hottie and he made me love the news and what is going on around me.
@@007Julie Me too! I had a huge crush on Tom Brokaw also! I'm ten years younger than he is, and I have always adored him.
Used to think he resembled Ford a tiny bit back in the day. Oddly enough, they’re actually friends in real life too!
@@trevgreg2 They were both very handsome men in their prime.
I grew up with Mr. Brokaw and Jane in my youth household. Great people and great memories. Thank You both for your service.
An American treasure. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
He is a gem to this country. Sending lots of positive vibes and wishes his days fully of joy.
God Bless you Mr. Brokaw. You’re one of the best. Thank you for all your decades of dedication to real news.
He's 83. Reminds me of my dad. Had to hustle as a kid. He had to give up his normal activities to keep living and loving because if he was fighting to do things he did in his younger years, he'd get mentally and physically sicker and drained. Always loved his journalism. Wishing him well in health and life in itself.
Yeah, his great grandfather reminds me of my grandfather-/an immigrant from Poland when he was an infant. Youngest boy of 10. Out to work at 8, probably had dyslexia because he never learned to read. He was a functional literate. He lied to get into the army at 17, WWI. He was a semi-professional boxer, then a lineman in for NJ. He also took care of the field house at Princeton. My dad went on to be a sportswriter, my aunt a teacher. You couldn’t ask for a more honorable, hardworking man then my grandfather. The past generations have a lot to teach us.
@@marytheresejacksonlutz2533You brought your grandfather to life! Bless him.
Thank you😍
Tom Brokaw was the reason I watched the Today Show, while he was there, and the NBC Nightly News. The sound of his voice gave me comfort during scary turbulent times and inspired me to be engaged in my world as a social worker and advocate for the disenfranchised. Thanks, Tom. You’re permanently woven into the fabric of my history.
What a remarkable newsman, reporter and husband! We need so many more people like him. Thank you, for being a real inspiration, Duncan, a man for the ages.
Do totally Agree! Hve a good day/night, Karita.
Tom Brokaw even introduced Jane Pauley to the TODAY Show, back in 1976, where she remained on there for 13 years. Gene Shalit was also there, too, so there’s a little piece of TODAY Show history, among Jane and Tom, together.
Even so, I still think of Tom and hope all is well for him and his life, dealing with his blood cancer.
Gene Shalit was weird. I have been a huge Tom Brokaw fan ever since I watched him as a local TV news anchor in Los Angeles when I was living in California. Was thrilled when he was the Grand Marshall of the Rose Parade one year.
@@cathynewyork7918 I didn’t even know who he was, until I saw that one SpongeBob episode, where he dropped so many puns about the Krusty Krab and Mr. Krabs, together.
@@chrisfinch8637 That is amazing, that you did not know who he is. I guess you are very young. I watched him in the 1960s on a local TV program in Los Angeles and kept watching him when he was on the national show based in New York City. I have never watched SpongeBob, but I have heard of SpongeBob. I think it's a cartoon show for kids, right?
@@cathynewyork7918Yes. Been going on and on, since July of 1999.
@@chrisfinch8637 Well I was already an adult when SpongeBob came out so I never watched it and don't know anything about it, other than what it looks like. Tom Brokaw has been a very distinguished news reporter and anchor since the 1960's when I first watched him. He has written several excellent books. He is NOT a SpongeBob character.
I'm so glad he's still able to share these stories.
I have loved Tom Brokaw since I was a kid. My Lord, how I miss him in journalism. I felt like I could always trust his reporting. His integrity, honesty and commitment to the truth was clear. How lucky I was to grow up looking up to him.
Tom and Jane were amazing together back then and seems like nothing has changed. You can tell they've stayed good friends, which is amazing to see.
I could sit at his feet and listen to him talk for hours. Oh, the stories he could tell. I’d ask him first for the secrets behind 60 years of marriage, then I’d ask her too. That’s something to really be proud of. That and so many other things in his life I’m sure will go down history. What an amazing man.
I Love Tom Brokaw, he was and always will be the best in his field!! His voice, his class and his looks are top of the game....miss you, Mr. Brokow! You will never be forgotten!
Loved him then, love him now. A good man in every dimension.
I love to listen to him narrating stories...
Tom Brokaw was the most powerful news veteran in the business when he worked at NBC. He first anchored the TODAY show when he introduced his co-anchor Jane Pauley back in 1976, then, he became one of the three top newsmen on the big networks when it was the Rather-Brokaw-Jennings era (Dan Rather of CBS, Tom Brokaw of NBC, Peter Jennings of ABC). His colleague, Jane, joined Stone Phillips to anchor the most successful news magazine called "Dateline NBC" when the year Rodney King was beaten by white supremacists and it sparked massive rioting before I was born. His book brings back times and memories when it was a house on the prairie. This is why at 83, Brokaw is not giving himself up. Incredible reporting by CBS Sunday Morning; blessings to Tom and the Brokaw family.
The big 3 inherited the path laid by Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley and Chet Huntley. When Reagan threw out the Equal Time and Fairness doctrine in the 80's Fox arrived and destroyed MSM reporting. Now there is only dumbed down propoganda for the one party state and the neocon pharma machine. I would be very interested in Tom's real views on reporting today. He is a great guy!!!
I could tell Jane and Tom were friends. It seemed like 2 friends talking rather than an interview. I really enjoyed watching.
For innumerable evenings sharing an evening with you Tom, THANK YOU for your kindness and steadfastness in reporting the day's news!!
Mr. Brockaw, my heart goes out to you and your family. My brother passed from Multiple Myeloma in 2002 at age 52 and know the affects of this disease to both the patient and family. I pray that your journey through this very difficult illness is as gentle for both you and your loved ones as possible. 🙏🙏
When I got off work after many years, the first thing I did was watch Tom Brokaw. He and his family look great.
What an amazing human. His voice brings me back to being young at home with parents.
Even when delivering bad news, his voice was somehow a comfort, a reassurance, that everything would be ok. I wish him well as he takes comfort in his family and deals with his disease.
What a true newsman. I can only imagine the stories this man can tell.
One of the greatest journalists in our lifetime ❤🎉🍾🙌🏻🙏
Always loved Jane and Tom. Sending prayers and love to both of them and their families.♥️♥️
A true gentleman I looked forward to the evening news every night , trusted him.
Wish him well in his older years
What a fabulous biographical interview of a great guy and a wonderful insight into how country folk’s determination to survive and grow led to this great man!
I grew up listening to him every night. You don't know what you have until it's gone. While listening to this I realized how much I miss hearing his voice. He has covered so much in his lifetime. I wish i could sit down with him and get his opinions on current events.
I LOVED this !...NO wonder he is so Real so Sweet he's a Midwestern Man !!❤...I pray he finds true peace joy and love in salvation in Jesus 🙏...GOD Bless him and his beautiful family ❤❤
I grew up watching this legend. There is no good news people like him left.
These two are from an era of honest informative news. They would deliver unpleasant information with unbiased compation and integrity.
Thank you for your time and service to this nation.. I had to edit out " United " because it doesn't feel like seem that way.
I was a special friend of Morley Safer..the wonderful warm Mr. Safer..he had so much respect for Tom..so so smart. This is a wonderful piece…The Greatest Generation personified…Tom Browkaw
Morley was great he had another cool show on food network called Legendary Hangouts. Why did Morley announce his reiterment only a few days before he died? Was he sick and cbs decided to announce?
What a incredible man!! Much love to you Tom!!!
Tom Brokaw is one of the best newscasters out there
Tom is a remarkable human. I had the honor of meeting him and his wife when I was young and he told me their love story. I’m going to dive into his book tonight.
A wonderful yet sobering story about life. Thanks for being in our lives Tom. I pray that you maintain comfort and peace. What a legacy.
His clear and piercing voice is woven into my childhood. Hats off to you, sir, you’ve run the race and fought the good fight.
Tom Brokaw bless his heart what an inspiration we all grew up watching him

A true gentleman and what a voice and journalist. They don’t come any better; an era gone by
I grew up listening to Tom Brokaw. Life's is short but what you can accomplish in that time is quite amazing. This guy's seen a lot.

Thank you for doing the feature story on this amazing American icon. It's so good to lay eyes on this gentleman who is such a huge part of American history, and my life growing up. ♡
Awww good to see him. I always wonder about the good ole days when they just delivered the news straight up, no smirks, opinions, just informative news.
Thank you, I couldn't have said it better.
Seems that Tom was delivering up the news with a little more than we knew about. He was sexually assaulting women in the newsroom.
What a life and the success we have in life is built upon the blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice of our parents and ancestors.
Good to see him still going strong. I grew up with him and still remember many of his news casts.
I grew up watching him as we all have and I've always liked his voice...🙏🏽
Absolutely incredible life and such humility and appreciation for his family and upbringing. Love you, Tom. 🙏🏾💙🙏🏾
I have a lot of respect for this man. I thought he was gone. I did. He and Dan Rather and Peter Jennings made my evenings asa kid. When I heard one of their voices. I knew I was home safe.

I use to watch him on TV when i was too young to even understand the news. Now, as a mother of a toddler sometimes it’s difficult to find a news anchor you can trust is just showing you the news. I hope he knows how much people appreciate his integrity in reporting the news. They dont make em like they use to.
So right about that.
