  • Paul McCartney recently uncovered photographs he'd thought were lost - ones he took during The Beatles' first tour of America in 1964. The pictures - candid shots from the vantage point of newly-anointed superstars - are the basis of a new book, "1964: Eyes of the Storm," and an exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery. Correspondent Anthony Mason gets a private tour with McCartney, who talks about documenting the astonishing welcome that the "lads from Liverpool" received.

I never attained the success that he or The Beatles achieved, but THIS is how it was when you first started out and were successful. You experience things you never thought possible. You're living a life so foreign to you that you're beyond happy, but still in shock. I am so happy and proud of what Paul has achieved in his life and am thrilled that he decided to share it with us. It was so long ago and some many roads have been taken. I'm just proud that I even experienced just a small part of that life and success. Thank you Paul. 💙

The footage at 1:00 shows a transformative moment, not only for The Beatles, but for us as well. Things were never the same after their arrival at Kennedy Airport. And seeing John come off the plane in NY, wind blowing his hat off, setting him on his ultimate destiny....just chills when I think of the import of that moment.
I remember very well their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show --- it was very near my 5th birthday, I was all set to watch The Wonderful World of Disney (a cartoon presentation I'd been looking forward to all week, a birthday present just for me), when my babysitter comes over in a bit of a panic, Ed Sullivan is about to come on and their TV is broken, can she please please watch The Beatles on our TV?? I vividly remember saying that I had one of the earliest if not the first album…specifically to get the attention of the older girls on my block. I didn’t have it…first Beatles albums are the best

To me, they represent those beautiful days before rock stars were arrogant, snarling narcissists. They were clever, glib, charming and overall just pleasant. Their talent made them famous but it was their personalities that made them so extremely popular. The amazing thing is that they were really a humble bunch of guys that never lost sight of where they came from or how lucky they were to have lived the life they got to live. How can you not love them?

As a photographer myself. I have to say that Paul has a good eye. I really like his shots. in my opinion he is a better photographer then his wife Linda who was an actual photographer. Paul was just a guy walking around with his new camera. but Paul has an eye for seeing something interesting and framing it right. it's just another creative outlet that he was good at. I met Paul and Linda in the 70's in a parking lot outside of a recording studio in Hollywood.

Happy birthday, Sir Paul - but the gift of your photographs is ours! I don't know if the exhibit will travel but I was blessed to see the exhibit of Linda's photography currently on display at the Center for Creative Photography at University of Arizona's campus through 8/5/23 (I live in Tucson) and it feels like an answer to this prodigious collection of your own photographs. I was 7 years old when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and I remember it in every cell of my memory, then saw the Beatles in person at age 10 in 1966 at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan (I won two tickets in a contest sponsored by Cunningham's Drugstore and took my 11-year old neighbor). Such a magical time and you are the magician that helped to create it ❤

@@harleydurianriders4477 It is true, I have the photos to prove it and having gotten older, I must marvel at my mom's bravery to let her 10 year old daughter and her 11 year old neighbor girl go to this concert in 1966 when there were no cell phones and trust that we would find where she said she would park the car at the appointed hour (the concert was during the day, amazingly enough, I think it was August 13, 1966). We did it! Success from start to finish! The Beatles were wearing light-colored suits, they were fronted by Cyrkle ("Red Rubber Ball"). I can still hear the wall of screaming that made up most of the sound. Heaven only knows what I did with the ticket stubs.
