My sampling quest of smelling the Amouage scents I missed is slowly moving along. Today I smelled Royal Tobacco which pairs tons of resins with an excellent tobacco note to make a unique and complex gift.

Cecile Z is a phenomenon. Her resume is incredible. To have that many beloved fragrances to your name, so early on in her career, is astonishing. I'm always keeping an eye out for what she does next.
I've been waiting for this one. When I tried it, reminded me of TF Tobacco Oud (extremely pungent) but I much prefer Amouage RT (which is still pungent but not like TFTO).

This fragrance become bully among tobacco fragrances and I love it! Cecile pumped this tobacco up really good. Nothing classic tobacco fragrances are about. No mixing with honey, fruit or whatever. It's raw Cuban tobacco leaf with all the balsamic stuff and God knows what else.
It's very bold to wear but wirh beautiful aura scent.
so many Amouage scents on my to buy list, this one is right up there.

Great review as always. Like you, I am a total fan of this House…particularly the Christopher Chong era. I remain an ardent fan and enjoy several of the new releases: Boundless, Purpose and, of course Royale Tobacco!! AND I ADORE THE WORK OF CECILE. Now for the fragrance. Your review and visual references are spot on. At the time of your review I had my bottle for over a year and absolutely love the scent. As per usual, I like to watch trusted revelers , like you, to help me understand why I love a fragrance so darn much. Your visual references achieved that objective! Thank you

I smelled this last week and wasn't as inspired as you were. Great video as usual kid! I have plenty of fragrances that I initially wasn't too particular about and revisited them later and was like "what was I thinking, this is great" maybe this could be one of those fragrances.
This one needs to be play with. It's very very complexed. I was hyped as f but not blown away. Will wait for colder days and aging to do it's own magic. Think it have 25% fragrance oil,very potent.
Not the first time fragrance starting to "work" after some time. Xerjoff Alexandria II needed 3 months to show all the potential.
This is exactly how I like fragrances to be described. You have a great way with words. I highly recommend Search next, a gorgeous smokey lime & lemon with a slight creaminess in the background. Looking forward to getting my nose on King Blue next.
Completely agree about Search. I've gone through nearly half a bottle since March. Unfortunately, I think it got lost among the three other not terribly inspired Odyssey III releases and that is too bad because it really is amazing. It's true that it cannot hold a candle to the complexity of Royal Tobacco or older releases, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I couldn't wear something super complex every day. I'm looking forward to smelling King as well because Alex Gurgeon was one of the noses and he did Search as well.
@@DaveNYC Yep, Search has both a simplicity AND a complexity about it. A really beautiful scent. I agree that the other 3 in this collection probably let it down.

Hi Marc. First let me say I am new to your channel. I only found it after Mr. Smelly mentioned you a couple weeks ago, but I've watched some of your back catalog. I really enjoy your approach (i.e. thoughtful, full of impressions not just descriptions, not trend driven, etc.). You definitely bring something special to the table, so thank you!
I sampled RT rather extensively and then found a bottle for a discount a few weeks ago. It really is unique and beautiful. Unfortunately, living in NYC, this is not the time to be wearing it, so I've turned the AC down a few nights and enjoyed it by myself at home lol. I agree that a big part of the magic of this scent is how it manages to keep so many balls up in the air without dropping any. I can only imagine how many iterations this went through to get it perfect.
A couple of thoughts, I wonder if what you are thinking smells like immortelle could be the fenugreek. I've heard this gives a maple syrup facet to perfumes. It's a spice I've used in cooking, and I have to say, I have not noticed that there, but I believe I heard Cecile talk about it and she mentioned it. I actually get that almost off the top and it does certainly nudge the line into gourmand for a while, but as you say, the maple recedes and it does 20 other things. Also, anise in perfumery is sometimes sweet. The pic you showed is star anise and that is a completely different thing with a different smell. Actual anise is licorice-like and sweet.
According to Cecile & Mr. Salmon ,who spoke about it at ScentXplore last year, the Royal in the name is the royal frankincense and then obviously there's the Tobacco, so the idea is that it is Oman meeting Cuba (and a lot of other things they mentioned), so the name actually makes sense. Unfortunately, that's not going to be obvious to very many people.
I have not been able to pick up either plum or oud, but I'll keep trying.
The longevity and sillage are crazy. I can't imagine ever wearing more than 2 sprays of this. But we shall see. The cold does interesting things...

Amouage is my favorite house i down own any of the ones with the new direction guy but only only i smelled in his leadership was search and i love it i own 8 from thr brand need to try the opis collection and also oveture i have nkt smelled yet
I got full bottle of Royal Tobacco. Wow!!! I have Herod and like it. I wanted better. RT is heaven !!! I smell my skin a lot after spraying. The fenugreek creates maple note. I LOVE this maple note and licorice. Osmanthus gives apricot touch. The sweet note with buttery resins are crazy good. I am getting a 10ml Jubilation Man today. Tried it? It also has gotten rave reviews. I cant wait
Once you get away from PDM you'll find much better. This is a good start.
Terrible terrible performance. Tested it like 5 times to make sure. Research around.

Got my bottle 2 weeks ago. I was super hyped,you know how it is ;) Smoky sweetness,syrupy,resins everywhere,very intense! This one NEED COLD to open. Weather is like super hot here so will let it age some more.
One thing I noticed. When spray it in the air I get what fragrance is about.
Something tells me you found a bottle at the same site I did. I just got mine as well (for a decent discount) and it's killing me that the weather is so inappropriate for this right now. Can't wait for fall!
@@DaveNYC I'm from Eastern Europe and we must flex our market to gray zone to buy a fragrance. It was little harder to find RT but for a price at 170e it was worth waiting/searching.
I wear lot of fragrances all year around but Royal Tobacco is just to much for heat. Now we must get something that it's wearable now. Perfect excuse to buy some more fragrances 😂

Great breakdown Marc. I 100% agree with your assessment. Amouage has definitely taken us on a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the last several years. Hoping their bangers are much more consistent going forward. Im hearing their newest release does not disappoint as well. 🤞

cecile z (and gaultieri) have to be my favourite perfumers now. great review of a super-classy scent (my decant is empty, need a bottle now). i agree about 'tobacco' being misleading, but i can also see the marketing team not vibing with 'royal anise' or 'royal basil'. ;)

Went to Nieman Marcus and tested RT. I liked it. I bought tester bottle off ebay for $200. I have interlude black iris and overture man coming nxt week.

@@robes08I smelled it in Vienna last week but I could smell everything but tobacco. It was more like a mix of incense, myrrh, oud and maybe some amber. Way too heavy for me.

Sampled this twice before Buying it Comp diff with a spray from the bottle & It is beast mode & I know I overspray “BUT” dumbing it all down I have gotten too many complements all of em saying I smell like a Christmas tree! So Are they really just talking sh*t lol!!! The pine & heavy resins def take away the want to wear right now in Houston

Wasn't a massive fan of the open on this, bit too much but the mid to drydown is great where you start to get all the hidden notes.

I have a decant of this and I have a different experience every time I wear it. Sometimes it’s heavy on the tobacco, which I really enjoy, and on other wearings all I smell is basil, which I don’t like at all. This fragrance doesn’t quit and when it’s a basil day I’m really sick of it after 6 hours. Weird fragrance for me.

This is one of those fragrances that really disappointed me, let me give you a little background: my father was a smoker, and every once in a while he smoked Cuban cigars and if you have smelled a Cuban cigar, it’s got nothing to do with this fragrance, I’m not a smoker, but I have smoked Habanos, if you want the real deal, Royal Crown’s Habanos capture the nuances and the experience of it. I think that’s my issue with the majority of tobacco fragrances, there’s pipe tobacco, and there’s Habanos or cigarette tobacco, a whole different animal. Try a Romeo y Julieta Churchill it’s an incredible olfactory experience. To me it’s an Incense - Anise fragrance and I’ll pass on this one. Thanks for the Sampling Marc!!!

I had a bottle of Royal Tobacco, but quickly sold it. Not a huge fan of Amouage lately. Their best era was when they made Epic, Memoir and Jubi.

I love RT, but I'll never go beyond the decant I got. It's fantastic, but waaaay beyond anything I'd ever wear in public. I really enjoy wearing it at home though. That licquorice / aniseed is POWERFUL.

Amouage makes me very sad. Formally my favorite brand with eight of their fragrances in my collection. But, I used to be able visit two stores locally and sniff. One store removed the brand completely. The other store has not been restocked for about five years, so none of the "new" offerings are available, and just a few of the old stock remains, the less popular ones remain on the shelf. I will not be ordering tiny samples, so... bye-bye Amouage. It was great while it lasted.
