One big reason that the US/MLB has never really taken WBC more seriously is because they do not want their players to get injured for upcoming next regular playing season. That is ironic considering that the MLB is the co-founder of WBC. It is also ironic when international players in MLB, such as Shohei, are playing their hearts out for their countries, especially when Shohei is considered the biggest pro-baseball athlete in history now & it would be ashamed if he got injured during WBC. Television programming also scheduled WBC while Mad Madness is going on, so WBC viewership numbers could have potentially been a little bit more without that big college basketball tourney happening. Japan now has 3 WBC championships over anyone else.
I, a Japanese fan, would like US citizens to encourage more excellent starting pitchers to participate in this tournament. Then WBC will be the genuine world championship.
For countries other than US, this result is another step to make Team US more serious about this tournament. One day, I'd like to watch Team Japan compete with DREAM TEAM USA in its true sense - both offensively and defensively. It'll be a tough game to win, but the stronger Team USA is, the more meaningful to the progress of baseball.
