I measure the NEW & OLD Toyota Tacoma

- In today’s video I measure and compare the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma to my 2018 3rd generation to see if it has gotten any bigger, or smaller. Overall the 4th generation feels much bigger in the cab even though the numbers didn’t really show that. But in every other category is was an improvement.

This is a review I’ve been looking for great video.
The video I was waiting 🙌🏻
This is a great video idea. Thank you!!
Thanks for taking the time to measure all the differences, very informative.
Please keep in mind that a 1” larger diameter tire only makes the truck 1/2” taller, as only half of that height is between the ground and the center of the hub. It is better to take any height measurement (overall, hood, bed, etc.) from the center of the hub. This eliminates the size of any tire or rim.
Great topic. I am considering a new Tacoma and this helps.
Very much enjoy this video. I love the tap measures
Great comparison video! Thanks!
We are a Toyota family and just yesterday had the conversation about size of new gen vs last, then this video pops up. Perfect, nice vid thumbs up
Great video!!!
FINALLY, a video I’ve been waiting for because I’m not sure which one to buy.
I’m considering a used 2018-2021 tundra instead. Same price. Lol.
@@americandude3825i used to have a Tacoma and traded for same year 2020 1794 trim Tundra 27k miles in perfect shape, it was like 49.5k a little more out the door. Kind of hard to believe I have this big beautiful 4 wheel drive with Lexus amenities for the same price as this new Tacoma
@@americandude3825also, I get a legit 17 mpg driving on i95 but around town is rough. If you do a lot of city driving it would add up pretty fast if that is an issue
@@brian17411 heck yes. I’d love a limited, platinum, or 1794 second gen crew max. I have a 2008 5.7L sequoia Sr4 premium (JBL and leather) that is RWD. I bought it summer 2012, with 83k miles.
Just hit 221k miles. It runs like new. Interior looks amazing even though we have four children we raised in it and I use it for Lowe’s runs. I’ve had trash, lumber, 80 bags of mulch - still looks great. Basically the Only things I’ve had to do besides tires/oil/brakes:
Serpentine belt twice (routine maintenance every 80-100k miles)
Ac servo and ac blower motor (the part that rotates the ac vent directions is the servo. It went out at 218,000 miles so it was not a failure. It just met the end of its life cycle at 16 years old. Dealer wanted $2000. I did it for the cost of the part and dozens of UA-cam videos.)
Front door speakers. I have Toyota JBL. The front door speakers disintegrated from being so old so I replaced them at 215,000 miles.
Replaced the windshield…by force. Haha. When I Bought it, it came with a tiny hairline crack about half an inch. It was fine until about 15-2016. We got a bad ice storm. The next morning the sun heated the inside of my truck before the outside was able to melt the ice off. It ended up cracking all the way across and the. Last fall an object smacked my windshield on the hwy, nearer vehicle was about quarter mile ahead of me.
Lift gate handle is a known issue for all second gen sequoia. It’s made from like a rubbery material and melts in the sun. So I replaced that around 200,000 miles.
Replaced driver head rest because the original was peeling probably due to my short hair and wear a hat that scraped it so much.
Headlamps got replaced at 219k miles - had resurfaced them a few times.
I installed a pioneer 9” floating touch screen that does Apple wireless and android wireless (and wired). Best decision ever. Makes road trips amazing.
I had a shop remove the muffler and straight pipe it after the cats. Sounds amazing but being an SUV the interior does hum a lot now so I may reverse my decision haha.
Best tires I’ve had a bf Goodrich ko2. Two I installed in 2017 have over 50k miles on them and it’s just now time to replace them. (Only suburb and highway driving - no dirt or off-road).
Long live the second gen!
Great info 👍👍
I’ve had 2 limited 3rd generation Tacos and now a 4th gen TRD Sport and it is night and day, I’ll take the 4th gen.
Great comparison video.
I like both colors a lot. Noticed you said the keeping the darker one clean and that is a good point. I have the boring silver on my 2020 tundra and the thing always looks clean, used to have black so it was a nice change
Great video, very informative. Now only if I could afford one...
I subscribed, interested to see more
Great vid! What's the distance from the ground to the lower door channel? In other words, how big is the 'step up' to get into the truck? Thanks!
Thanks for a very informative video. Can you please measure the height of the tailgate in the down position to the ground on the 2024. Thanks.
Compare both engines at 300,000 miles
The turbo would burn out, easy win for the 3rd.
@@kaygeeboi my passat s 4cyl with 1.8L turbo is at 200,000 miles with 0 repairs outside of routine maintenance. The hate on Turbos is completely unwarranted, its unlikely you'll have to replace a turbo for atleast a decade.
@@josephvasconcelos5943 My brothers 2022 Tundra was part of the ones that got recalled. After couple months he got that “reduce power engine” prompt in the screen. Bearings in the crankshaft and stayed in the shop for months. Until he got it back fixed, then sold it for a trail boss and never again had an issue. Now back to my opinion is I don’t agree with his purchase of a Chevy since I am Toyota owner, but it did push my brother to change brands, but to each their own. I’ll keep my 2021 Tacoma and 2016 Camry XSE both still have v6s NA.
@@josephvasconcelos5943 how much does your Passat weigh?? And how much does it tow? 😂
I only put about 3k miles on my truck a year. I'd probably be dead before i hit 150k so who cares...lol
Thanks. Appreciate it.
You're welcome!
thank you, very informative.
Distance between the wheel wells in the box? Thanks
As a fat guy getting away from jeeps, im grateful for the slightly larger cab. Thanks for the comparison, picking mine up tomorrow.
Nice, I think you’re going to love it!
And once again the trucks get huger and huger with every generation. The madness continues.
The two are very similar size. Most noticeably the 4th gen has a wider stance
Toyota has confirmed the door to door width, and bumper to bumper length has stayed the EXACT same
@@lilpumpjetski8303 thought the 4runner is 4 ¹/²" lover same as 250 Landcruier?
There’s a market for trucks smaller than Tacoma now. I guess you get the Goldilocks setup of small medium and large now, and xxl etc
Thanks for doing this... Really surprised this isn't normalized from journalists. Maybe you should make it your thing!
Interesting, thanks for doing this. I'd be curious to see if there is a difference in overall width from outside mirror to mirror? Thanks!
If I’m not mistaken they made it a goal to be the same size mirror to mirror and bumper to bumper, all while widening the track and extending the wheelbase.
@@sclems4 That sounds great, thank you!
what is the difference between wheel well in the bed? Can't fit a normal sized pallet in the 3rd gen.
Great video and information, I have a new 2024 on order and would like to know if my Tonneau cover will fit from my 2020 on the new 2024 ?
No I don’t think it will, the bed is a little wider on the 2024
I’m new to your channel. Wonder if you have done a comparison of the new Nissan Frontier vs the old Frontier? Thanks
Like the 2nd gen vs the 3rd Gen Frontier?
@@MuscleAmerican yes please
You should put "ASMR" on the title of this video. I'm experiencing ASMR watching this video, which was not my intention. I just wanted to see 2024 Tacoma content hahaha
@muscleamerican can you measure the rear windows? I love the third gen rear window size and would like to know how it stacks up against 4th gen rear window.
3rd Gen is 11 3/4” wide by 11 3/4” tall
4th Gen is 12” wide by 7 1/2” tall
Nice Tacos!!did you lift the 3rd gen taco?
Nope, stock height
Thanks
But will my 7ft fishing poles fit in the cab diagonally?
How about from the ground to the floor. (Stepping into the truck?) Thanks
4th Gen is 23 1/2” and 3rd Gen is 22”
if you have kids, I'd love to see a car seat comparison. Always wondering if i could make a mid-size truck work with car seats. Front facing seems to work okay, it's rear facing carseats that seem to be the biggest problem.
Yeah I have a front facing car seat and it’s tight but it works. Not a huge difference between the two.
Factory Floor mats from 3rd gen fit in the 4th gen? Shortage/back order on the 4th gen mats rn
No, check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/l3pyoPtd9-M/v-deo.htmlsi=PSUcvI-vfJuTEwp-
I would like to know how you feel about the new electric Rack vs the old hydrolic rack?
The steering is effortless in the 2024. The 3rd Gen has a noticeable amount of resistance.
@@MuscleAmerican thanks for that
Great video! thank you!
Glad you did the rear seat measurement. Toyota said they added more legroom and stretched the wheelbase and it shows. Visually people have said its the same as the 3rd gen but really there is a difference of about 2 inches. Thigh support is important on long drives.
Measured the same.
@@nordlandak6853 no it didnt. The thigh support from the back of the seat to the edge of the cushion the 4th gen had about 2 inches more of support.
roof dimensions please
I like your new truck it's very nice that's for sure! But I'm all about the 3rd gen have you tuned it "overland torque tune"
Yeah I got the OTT. It’s great, I also did a video on it.
@@MuscleAmerican oh nice bro I got to ✅ that out I have a '22 & I got it tuned my goodness did it make a huge difference! 😁 I got a manual transmission lol
I raced a 2024 TRd with my 2024 Colorado Trail Boss and beat it pretty easily, you should race your trucks and see witch ones faster!
When are we getting data on the hybrid
They are not being delivered yet. They should hit dealer lots in late April early May.
@@MuscleAmerican still no info? No mpg or msrp? Curious how much more it will cost. So far 2024 went up way to much in price
The length of the trucks bumper to bumper.
3rd Gen is 212.3” and the 4th Gen is 213”
The overall length is exactly the same as the 3rd gen 212.3”
does seat sit higher from the floor?
3rd Gen is 10 1/2” and 4th Gen is 11”
That’s with both seats as low as they can go
Head room! What’s the headroom difference
It’s about a 1/2” more in the 4th Gen
How does the drive compare
Check out my other video where I go into some of my first driving impressions. Overall the 4th Gen feels bigger, seats are way more comfortable and the torque feels great.
Hopefully they have the V6 option for the new taco later.
Toyota has wheel spacers on the 24 and also put on wider fender flairs for a aggressive stance. Extra ground clearance with a larger tire size but they welded the tow hitch to the frame so expect to drag your ass in offroad trails. Get a 3rd Gen better buy over the new and improved Taco!!
There’s no comparison! Third generation Taco all day all night! Unfortunately the new Taco will never stack up!!!
You mentioned the 3rd gen has 16” wheels but didn’t mention 4th gen has 18” wheels…. so is the actual truck taller?
My 4th gen in this video is a trd off road and comes with 17” wheels. The sport model comes with 18” wheels.
If the tires on my 3rd Gen had the stock tires they would be 1” smaller in diameter compared to the stock tires on the 4th Gen. Hope that makes sense.
@@MuscleAmerican yeah, just would have been nice if you mentioned the 2024 wheel size in video.
@@bartcanuck734 yeah good point
I'm glad you didn't eat a Rosie O'Donnell taco.
Where do you live? Utah? CO?
Utah
The only major downside with the new Taco is how unlikely it'll be to get one under MSRP.
Dealer near me has $2,300 off the sr5 4x4 and $1,000 off a TRD off road
@@Duckhunterbow I rather wait until I can get it close to invoice like my 3rd gen.
I would take a 2015 with the 4.0 engine all day long over both of these!
Best year Tacoma imo.
@@jerad4336 I agree. Wish I would’ve bought one back then but didn’t :-((
Haha and with a 2015 transmission? yeah umm no.
@@bartcanuck734 never heard of any problems with that transmission? What do you mean?
@@Getusom what are you serious? it was always trying to grab a clue as to which gear it should be in?
People who are hating on the 4th gen couldn’t afford it anyway 😂. Lol
Enjoy your 4 cylinder you simp 😂
Speak for yourself, the new tacoma is ugly and putting a turbo in it was a mistake
Enjoy your 4 cylinder, you simp 😂
I sat in the new taco. It has a smaller interior than my new rav4.
Your rav4 is unibody so obviously its going to be roomier inside. You are comparing apples to oranges
@@beexiong2995 I’m just giving a reference. The new taco is still very small inside. Possibly smaller.
@@americandude3825 its bigger everywhere according to his measurements. Did you even pay attention?
@@beexiong2995 I mean…I sat in it.
Old Tacoma every time
Nah dude. There's no comparison. My new one is light years better than my 2018.
@@dontreply69 enjoy the 4 cylinder turbo
@@appleztooranges Oh I am. Its more powerful than your 2023. More torque, more horsepower, better towing, better offroad, looks more like a tank than yours, sexier interior... better everything.
Except parts break while wheels are spinning off roading@@dontreply69
Both of you enjoy your tacomas 😊 I still love my 09 at 160k when it’s time I’ll upgrade but I’ll see how long this one will run.
I can afford the 3rd taco.
😂
Why didn't you measure the length of each truck?
Because they are pretty much the same in length. The 3rd Gen is 212.3” long and the 4th Gen is 213” long.
@@MuscleAmerican Thanks. Based on your measurement, the cabin width in the new Tacoma is shorter, is that correct?
New tacoma is just better in every way...
the rear leg room is HORRIBLE esp considering the number of complaints ppl had for the 3rd gen ..
It’s about the same and as good as it gets in a midsized truck.
@@MuscleAmerican thinner front seats!
AT 5:26, YOU ARE HAVING HARD TIME KEEPING YOUR FOOT STRAIGHT.
3rd gen is way better looking. Sorry, just my opinion. I think they screwed up with the new toyota lineup.
I love my 3rd Gen
50 grand for a mid size truck that doesn’t tow much, not great gas mileage, tiny motor that is going to get overworked. Ya no thanks
New taco is wider
Yes by 3 inches
Ew tacoma for the win all around!
2024 IS ALL PLASTIC MAKES IT LOOK LARGER
New Tacoma a waste of time and money
I am glad I drive a real truck and not a tiny Tacoma.
tacoma will outlast your fuel hog.
@@russbutsenko3824 No it won't, my truck can last past 1 million miles with excellent maintenance. And the fuel consumption is very similar.
You’re wallet much smaller when you buy the new generation!
Your*
Definitely not much smaller 😂
Thank you for calling your trucks by their real name…Tacoma, and not by that Gaylord abbreviation 🥴
Ha ha! It’s just for fun
@@MuscleAmerican😜
the new tacos look like utter shit
JUNK
it is less reliable, less quality and pricier. Toyota, honestly, you are going down.
How do you know that? I own both, the 4th Gen is so much better.
@@MuscleAmerican tell us this after another 2-3 years and 80k+ miles. old ones had their reputation after decades of proof, but this 4th gen? hahahah, where it is built? japan? usa? and what engine is in it? last question, who pays you to say things even yourself isnt so sure?
So you know nothing about the reliability, cool. And yeah I’m getting paid so much Toyota! 😂
