big hand for 1M subs! the workbench looks very sleek. I like the square dogs, and the assembly of the series of dog holes from spaced pieces rather than struggling to cut them out of the one long solid piece. and the eject mechanism is another wow.
This looks absolutely fantastic! Your hand cut joinery is top notch and it is certainly not wasting time! I can't wait to see the bench complete and in use on future videos. We have yet to start building our Roubo one. Greetings from warmer Croatia.
John, your genius, skill and ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. I appreciate the more traditional guys like Rob Cosman and Paul Sellers as well, but no one inspires like you do. I can just the traditional hand tool crowd - "a BACKSAW to cut dovetails??? WTF!!" Haha... Never stop being you, brother! :)
Hey Well done great video, the voice over is masterful, the explanations are clear and on point, and the The Bench is shaping up very nicely, two thumbs up.
Great Work John! I like your hand tool techniques with guides for rusty woodworkers. I need to try that out as soon as the ice in front of my shop melts enough for me to get in :)
Years ago, I made my workbench from sheets of plywood topped with masonite and surrounded by maple. Instead of the dog holes as John did, I drilled stepped 1" dowel holes. I then used stepped 1" dowels to fill the holes. Dogs which need a flat edge I just created some dowels with cuts to produce flat edges. With this method, I was also able to put dog holes in the center of the bench.
That bench dog is really clever. I just watched the other channel video, and I have to say, your idea for the top is really good. Some people don't give MDF enough credit, but I love to work with it - just carefully so I don't breathe the dust as I'm cutting it.
I just have to say randomly, what you do and present to us is so awesome. Who makes power tools out of wood and of such quality!!?? Your thought process is eye opening and inspiring. I don’t even really do woodworking, but I’m a tradesmen (tradesperson) millwright.... I enjoy watching. You know how to do things in interesting ways. Thank you
Jon, I would like to say that I'm seeing you now as you been 5-10 years ago. I'm very pleased of the new energy that come out from you :D I can't tell what it is, but, yeah man, great job!
Hello I always look at the video from Japan. John Heisz's ideas have been very helpful and I have used some of them in my videos. I am looking forward to it.
Uh, whoa... It looks like you are outdoing yourself with this build. I guess I will be needing to sign up for patreon to not miss a single detail here. It looks amazing so far. I'm a huge fan of your work.
beautiful work. when u say u are cheating when using power tools i remembered my old teacher saying once: you dont think the old timers wuld have used an angle grinder if they had one?. im all for using hand tools but i use it as an excuse to myself sometimes.
4:40 I made that mistake a week ago. Had a drawer side made up of several boards that had been sized and milled to spec and glued up together with biscuit joints. A lot of work. When I cut the tails one on side I was distracted or whatever. Only after sawing the vertical slots of the tails on the opposite did I realize I had done it a$$ backwards. Snapped the drawer side in two and tossed it in the garbage. ARRGEE!
Hey John for the band saw that I think is next, can you please include a picture in the build article of the wiring before you close it up? Like you did for the sander, that was really helpful. my project line up is the sander, some of your clamps, then the bandsaw. unless my wife throws in a wrench like painting, barf. Painting sucks.
Why did you use that section of pith wood in such a beautiful bench? From an engineering perspective, it likely makes no difference, but personally knowing it’s there would grind my gears. Thanks for all the wonderful content you produce.
I would have installed a 2 or 1 start lead acme thread screw for any vice, not standard V thread screw, did you mention which thread to install in your plans, and why.
I have a quick question and it might not be the smartest question to ask lol. I am getting ready to tackle your workbench with my own twist. I am wondering about the vises though. Since I am left handed, should I orient my vises opposite than what you have done on your bench? Any help is greatly appreciated!
I switched over to building bigger projects and they take time to do. And experience has shown me that most viewers want a complete video and not a series. That equals low view numbers and that hurts the performance of the channel. So it's not me moving away from UA-cam, it's the lack of engagement from the viewers (subscribers in particular) that's pushing me this way. Believe me, I'm not making a fortune by doing this. I could go back to cranking out filler content and start cooking in ads for Audible and Harry's razors and the like and make a TON more. This is about building something of value that some people still want.
👍 I wasn't implying criticism, I was just wondering..many of the other creators I follow (covering a very wide variety of topics!) are commenting on their channels that youtube is becoming more and more draconian, demonitzing or striking down videos, supposedly hiding notifications or comments, even unsubscribing people without their knowledge...I was curious to see if you felt targeted too.
Well, that's happening in the rest of the world and more and more each day, so UA-cam is just keeping pace. I don't say anything "controversial" on this channel, so it's relatively safe. But there might come a day where using a table saw the way I (and millions of other highly qualified people) use it will be considered "dangerous" content. So hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
@@JohnHeisz Speaking about your comments regarding "Dangerous content" Here in the UK I'm Pretty sure that NO UK MANUFACTURES make DADO Blades as our HSE (Health & Safety Executive ) frown on our use of them ! seems we're able to buy them off eBay but from overseas which ultimately costs a fortune in P&P. I've tried on numerous occasions to purchase a table saw arbor, to no avail, again i'm pretty sure the HSE has something to do with this, God Forbid we attempt to make our own Table Saw's.
Nice work John, but I would be concerned about the threaded rod eating away at the end piece of wood with the dovetails if you don't insert a metal sleeve.
I asked the threaded rod and he said he's hungry, but not that hungry :) But seriously, wear would be minimal. And if you want a sleeve, you can always put one in.
That's true. I watch the video because the workbench is sophisticated and I have no intention of building one. If it was 2x4 I wouldn't watch. I'm not an idiot. I like watching stuff I haven't seen before. I'll make mine out of 2x4 and won't make a video about it because nobody cares about 2x4 work benches anymore since probably 2008 !
This is partially unrelated, but I've been trying to find someone to build some kinda fancy wooden boxes and I can't find anyone in my area (Rochester, NY). Do you (or anyone else) have any ancient woodworking wisdom that could help me find someone willing and able in beautiful, sunny Rochester?
The only thing I don’t like about your channel is how UA-cam friendly they are, the mid roll ads are everywhere, but I don’t mind because it’s so relaxing to watch how you do this

1 million subscribers! Congratulations, John! Very well deserved.
big hand for 1M subs!

The combination of Oak and Walnut is a beautiful effect.

Thanks Andrea and good luck with yours :)
I've never seen a hacksaw used to cut dovetails, but you can't argue with the results!
when the tails and pins are that big haha why not? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
He had used and showed it before. You will get used to many different things if you continue watching this channel.

Did you not see the one where Cosman used a hacksaw and a flat screwdriver?
Great idea to use a guide lock to keep your dovetails perpendicular. Very helpful for those of us lacking substantial practice with dovetails.
Hey Well done great video, the voice over is masterful, the explanations are clear and on point, and the The Bench is shaping up very nicely, two thumbs up.
Absolute pleasure to watch such a master at work! Designer builder and video maker all in one. Top notch John!👍👌
Thanks :)
Watching the slow mo flex on the dovetails as you hammered the joint together was awesome.Rob Cosman has nothing on you.Great build John
Everything you make is appealing to the eye - even the clamps and other tools you make. You set the bar pretty high. Well done
Really liked how you clamped a block on top to keep your cuts straight when doing the dovetails. Great idea!

This is really nice, John. Truly inspirational work.
Huge congrats on the 1M, and thank you for another amazing video!
Very interesting. I look forward to continuing. I just finished making my joinery workbench.
Wonderful work👍👍👍
Very good job
It might sound inappropriate, but I always enjoy seeing what's in John's drawers.
Love how organised your bench drawers are! Looks like a pleasure to work with. Nice work!
I love those wooden clamps, I really need to motivate myself to make a set of those.
Looking great John. Certainly setting the bar high on this one. Well done.
Beautiful craftsmanship, couldn’t stop watching 👏
