  • This is the company I worked at during summer of 2014. I intentionally went back during peak leaf season (October 2014) to film two of the eight trucks that they run.
    Aaron, the helper you'll see the most, had texted me at 7:40am that they'd already filled a truck and gone to unload. Less than 2 hours after that first dump trip, he and Larry had the truck packed out again (with some help from me....) and left to get rid of load #2 of the day.
    At that point I went to catch the last street that Tristan and Joey were cramming onto their truck.
    The company currently has two ribbed body Heil F5000s like Joey's truck, three Leaches (former Western Disposal), one smooth shell Heil F5000, and the spare/recycling truck is an 18 cu yd. Heil F4000.
    This 1800+ home subdivision ("HOA") constitutes the Monday route, with other days' routes in and around Parker, Centennial, Castle Rock, Littleton, and Aurora. All routes have recycling collected on alternating weeks, the week I decided to go film being the 'off' week for Monday routes...so that's why everything at the curb goes into a single truck in this video; anything people put out is trash.
    A big shoutout and thank-you to all of my old coworkers~
    Hope everyone enjoys seeing a bit of what we do.

    We use to do it like that about 20 years ago. These days we hardly get out of the truck. All garbage & recycling must fit in their respective roll carts. Any extra garbage outside of the cart is charged as extra. Customers know this so 99% of the time there is nothing outside of the cart. 1 man per truck servicing 1,200 to 1,400 houses per route. Easy job, good pay & still clean at the end of the day. Had to get a gym membership to help keep off the weight since I'm not burning the calories that I use to ;)

    We can go easy on the garbage men by not throwing away so much stuff. We can reduce cardboard boxes and put them in bags. I even saw some perfectly good buckets being thrown away. I understand that sometimes we have so much junk we don't know what to do with it, but it's not throwing things in the landfill that's so bad, it's buying stuff in the first place. Waste not, want not!

    One thing I didn't know when I read your message was which company it was you worked for, so then I wondered if you maybe had something on UA-cam of the place... and well what do ya know! Can't go wrong with the company name your boss chose, no mistaking the job. After watching this video I want to go to Sydney airport and catch a plane over to Colorado so I can jump on the trucks with these guys and have some fun! haha This is the kind of work I love watching and doing myself, because it's well paced and no bullshit, just get the job done. It's not that slow speed where you fall asleep while working and it's not too quick where you can accidentally throw yourself in the truck, rather it's just right ;) Good thing about these guys is they do a good job too, not leaving shit everywhere or bins thrown through the house windows - just goes to show you can do a job with quality and be quick at the same time! Now to the trucks, the Leach was my favourite when it came to appearance, but the old F5000 holds first prize when it comes to the engine sound, just listen to that deep growl when it starts packing from 4:26! Made me raise my eyebrows that did! How bloody slow is the sweep blade at opening up on that truck but, it's almost like it's having a stretch after the hard work from the previous pack cycle lol Were those tippers added onto the tailgates after these trucks were bought? Especially on the Leach it looks like those very long hoses weren't fitted upon manufacture, you could get tangled in them if you got too close to that side of the truck as well :P If that was me fucking around trying to get that friggen cart on the lifter, I'd have been kicking the bloody thing and swearing at it hehe No wonder he struggled to pull it forward, let alone the tipper needing a manual boost, look at what came out of it! Couple of things which I liked was firstly the helper jumping on the step for the 1 second ride to the next pick-up at 1:05 and also the bag of leaves bursting just after 5:04 - poor resident trying to keep the rubbish contained. Team work was also written all over 2:54, driver running to the back and a swift team lift, with the helper already in the process of manually removing bags before the driver got there. I definitely enjoyed watching this one, I bet you had a ball of a time working there. Also a question, is it a situation where recycle is collected one week in all the areas and then on the next week recycling isn't collected anywhere? Or is the recycling done in some areas on one week and the other places get done the following week? Do all of these trucks do recycle at some point too or only some of the trucks?

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  8 років тому +2

      +MitchellM15 haha we'd be happy to have you. Especially over our summer, which'd let you get a break from colder weather.... The red truck's pretty bad with packer speed, worse really than the other two 5000s. That one might've had a tipper originally, but the Leach definitely was added on after. You can tell in the clip I shot from the step that it's mounted on an angle, so it starts tilting up too early (hence the pain in the ass that is leaning carts forward just so it will catch them). And the hoses have been redone, but yeah when they were like this you could be riding and if you had your foot in the wrong place, things could get ugly once you try to hop off. Fortunately never made that mistake, and you can see Aaron being wary of it at 1:01. And yeah for 1:05, the 1-second ride...You expect your driver to have the truck back in gear and rolling, but by the time you realize "I coulda just walked and been there by now" he gets the truck moving at last. haha the controls for the gas and brake never seem to work real well from the back of the truck

    There's nothing quite like honest to goodness manual RL action. No dicking around, just getting the job done. With a 2RII no less. (The Heil was cool too.) How are the Freightliners treating you guys? They sure sound nice. Brilliant hopper step footage, your Colorado uploads never fail to impress. Must've been one hell of a summer. Can we look forward to more of The Garbage Man on your channel?

      georgewuzheer I think the boss is relatively happy with Freightliner. The ride will put you to sleep compared to that of the Internationals...any road that those drive on might as well be unpaved. They just seem like a little more was invested into making them too. They still have had their transmission, PTO, and miscellaneous minor engine issues though. yeah there is and will be more to share for sure

    Cool little company right here. Love how these old RLs are ribbed. Wow - leaf season looks fun! So many bags haha So you were a helper here? That's cool, didn't know you were on a truck. These trucks all sounded real nice too. Is this the same Garbage Man company that works in many open market areas like in Minnesota? Like the angle from the RL step, that was awesome. The ex-Western Disposal trucks were cool. Didn't know they used to run those. Do these guys dump at DADS? Awesome video - seems like Colorado is treating you nicely :)

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  9 років тому

      yeah I was a helper but did some driving too. this is a completely separate company from the franchise GarbageMan you're thunking of, in Minnesota and in Colorado. and you can bet that that has led to confusion and some stories of panicked customers running after us when they actually have the other company (in open mkt areas). and yes, primarily at DADS. thanks for commenting :]

    Defiantly another excellent video! What's funny is I was going to ask if the Leach was an old western truck before I read the description. Dang that angle from the step was sure awesome! Never knew you threw trash!!! Are you still out in Colorado or back in Cali? If so, I would greatly appreciate some "boring" WM footage i.e. Mack and Pete Resi FL's that are becoming a dying breed out here! Again excellent post brother!

    • @Trashman242

      Mack resi FLs are still going strong out here in California! It's common to find at least one in many of the fleets across SoCal. Let me know if you want to see a specific model/combo and I'll try to find something out here :)

      Non-curotto Mack LE Starlights/Superdutys would be awesome, especially if they still have green buckets! And if by some wild chance they have an EZ Pack Hercules on anything that would be epic!

    Nice video except for the freightshakers. That company should invest in reliable trucks like Mack or international or pete. Freightliners are the cheapest truck out there both in price and in quality.
    Wish the guys that pick our garbage up where I live was as fast as these guys are.

      Jim Hunter Martin Yeah they told you right. For the first day I'd say bring two of those 2 liter bottles of Gatorade and almost as much water, a solid lunch. consider a hat and sunscreen because you could easily be burnt after the first day being out in the sun for so long. not sure if you'll be working with wheeled carts or regular trash bins, but either way I'd also say drag them rather than carry them. you can save a lot of effort by not carrying something over your head if you don't have to.

      +NapJeeper I see you live in Castle Rock. As I recall that area is done pretty early in the morning, so my recommendation is to have your stuff out the night before. If that's what you already do every week, feel free to leave them a Google review :)

    • @TheTrailheadNetwork
      @TheTrailheadNetwork 8 років тому

      +Trashman242 Oh they're no longer my trash provider. Bob has made it apparent that he just wants to collect money and not actually pick up trash. He can't return calls, can't issue refunds he promised, let alone have a discussion about the failings of his company. My issues with the Garbage Man are both with Bob, AND I believe his driver that just didn't like either my house maybe due to political beliefs, or more likely just didn't like animal waste in his trash run, so why pick it up???... just let Bob "deal with it". Bob's more interested in protecting his employees than retaining customers. I can only imagine his turnover rates.
      I know the comments say you used to work for them, I hope that's the case. I sure wouldn't want to work for a company that acts like this.

      NapJeeper ....How would your trash man happen to know your political beliefs?

    • @TheTrailheadNetwork
      @TheTrailheadNetwork 8 років тому

      +Trashman242 Early pickup, my car in the driveway and a liberal sensibility with the bumper stickers to match.
      Honestly though, I just think the driver didn't like the animal waste. The politics angle is only because I know how that subtle stuff works and is only a theory.
      Frankly I don't know the REAL reasons. Bob never wanted to address it, or have an honest conversation and even cut me off and ended my service and the call in about 10 seconds.

      Recycling is collected on an alternating schedule in most of Colorado's cities. this was the "off" week, with no recycling collection. Had this have been filmed one week later, you would have seen recycling collected.
