  • Airbus ended production of its A380 in the early stages of the 2020s, but who truly killed the aircraft? Was it Emirates' order cancellation, a lack of interest, or Airbus?

Rise of the Low Cost Carriers (LCC) had an important impact. A380 was developed based on the assumption that primary city airports would be congested, therefore higher capacity aircraft were needed. However LCCs carried an important part of the passengers and they used secondary airports to avoid high fees of the primary airports. So the expected congestion did not happen.

It was dead on arrival really. A plane that entered service 25 years too late. The 777 and A350 basically killed it and the 747

It's timing killed it more. By the time it arrived production rates of the 747-400 and the a340s were starting to drop. Quadjets were meeting their demise since the turn of the century.

So sad to see the super jumbo go as the industry develops, however it is very easy to see why the A380 is no longer needed

Customers love the A380 due to it's very specious cabin. I need to try to spot and somehow flown onboard one of those superjumbos at some point but maybe in the near future.

As usual, there are several contributing factors that ended the A380 production.
The point to point business model
    Low cost carriers rising
    Rising fuel costs
Maintenance and repair costs for quad jets
Higher engine power output combined with higher efficiency
A389 wing installed (the final nail in the coffin)
    And probably several more factors

I was a skeptic of the A3XX since it was in development. Business travelers are the bread-and-butter for the vast majority of legacy carriers, and businessmen would prefer more frequencies with smaller aircraft. That way they can fly when they want to, rather than having to adjust their schedules for the lone flight.

The A380 was borne out of the HUB & SPOKE concept but now the POINT TO POINT concept has taken over due to more fuel-efficient and longer range twin-engine aircraft.

I think they should have made an airbus a380 neo

The A380 isn't dead. Its just not in production and some airlines have withdrawn it.

Back in the 1970s there were about six international air gateways to Australia. Now there are about 20 although not all have 24/7 customs and immigration. But it is indicative of the change that came when hub and spoke fell out of favour. Not so obvious are the extra ports served from the traditional gateways. Perth or Adelaide to NZ does not require transit at Melbourne or Sydney. It might be a 737 but that is a couple of 737 loads of passengers not on the 747 that used to fly out of Sydney. Sydney-Auckland might now be a 787 or an A320.
That was repeated around the world except in the Gulf States. International air services agreements meant they had to channel all flights through the home airport which was what hub and spoke was all about. Emirates loved the A380 for that reason. Qantas was still locked into its traditional QF1 hub and spoke through Singapore, again perfect for the A380 but is that about to end with Project Sunrise? In the US QF is turning LAX in a destination instead of a hub with more direct services deeper into the US. Maybe NYC, Denver and Chicago.

Will Airbus open a new factory?
    Maybe in India?

I think that tue piont-to-point is just blabla. The Airlines cannot get enough of the long range single aisle planes for point-to-point AND there is a severe Pilot shortage.
On top of that I think that if I have the choice between Turkish airlines B777 and an Emirates A380, the difference in ticket prices is negligible, but on the A380 the level of comfort is superior. So, Emirates wins every time with me.
Airbus' refusal to update the A380+ to specs of Emirates, their biggest customer shows either a complete lack of comprehension of the market situation on Airbus side, or a preemptive decision to milk the model at minimum investment.
However, Emirates' cancellation of the last A380 order was strategic stupidity on their part. Although, I don't think that Emirates anticipated that the patience with A380 losses was wearing very thin in the Airbus management after the massive cost overruns in the development project and the lacklustre acceptance in the market and the failure to attract any US customers.
I believe that Emirates will be looking to replicate a A380 size airplane, as they really manage to fill the planes almost every time.

it was the price of oil and the consumption of quadjets that killed the A380 and nothing else !!!!
