It's pretty much impossible for a women to go through pregnancy, birth and solids for the baby without anyone ever mentioning any type of nutritional information, unless they are raising their child in the Brazilian rainforest.

I was vegan for 3.5 years and went to my doctor asking for a blood test cuz I was feeling horrible and extremely fatigued. She proceeded to tell me that I had nothing to worry about and went on to say that I didn’t even need to supplement for anything. I brought up b12 and she scoffed saying people worry about that unnecessarily. When I expressed more concern she said I could take a multi if I really cared that much. When I finally convinced her to give me a blood test it showed that I was dangerously deficient in vitamin D. She refused to test for iron so that one is still unknown but it amazes me how little doctors seem to know or care about nutrition.

I hope you are doing better now. This sounds very serious. I was Not deficient, but had similar Symptoms. My doctor checked B12, Iron, D3, i believe Zink, potassium and sodium and a few Others, but also Other indicators for Organ problems like thyroid, kidney and liver. I recommend you see a different doctor if you still have problems, because it could be very serious. Also as vegan you should Supplement B12 in any Case, D3 (+ K2 for better Absorption). Depending on your needs some females need Iron, but you need to be careful, because you can also overdo iron. Personally I also Take Aha+dha from time to time but it is unclear If there is a value from taking these. If in doubt you can use a multi, but I think this really depends on the diet.
I have been vegan myself and used these Supplements along the way. There are definetly non negotioables like B12 and D3, that you will not find in a vegan diet no matter how healthy. I really don't think its a good idea to have children figure out on their own how to eat a vegan diet. I went vegetarian when I was 13 and had to figure it out on my own. But I didn't figure it out I lived off of popcorn and bean and cheese burritos for months, and after that I remember eating microwave mac and cheese for years. Once I went vegan at 19 I was able to figure out how to eat more of a balanced diet but still struggled a lot with all the bad habits I had made. Also please parents, make a few vegan meals a week its extremally important to children (and even adults) to feel included.

First story: I agree re: the dad escalating the situation and not asking why daughter was going vegan, but I do think the first option he proposed makes the most sense. With 8 kids if one wants to make changes to their diet that no one else in the house wants to make, esp if that kid is 13, then yeah it makes sense to ask them to be responsible for the planning and execution of their meals. My family had 2 kids and we always had the option to make a second (vegetable-containing) meal for ourselves if we didn’t want to eat what was served. It promotes cooking ability and self-responsibility. The dad said they would be going over the daughter’s meals to make sure they were healthy, so it’s not like they were telling her ‘make your meals so long as we don’t have to put in any effort’, they were planning to put in the time and double check every meal before buying the ingredients. It’s everything after that where the immaturity takes off.

I think the boyfriend who was “tricked“ is really upset, because on a subconscious level, he knows that eating meat is wrong. (I bet he even considers himself an animal lover.) But he has resolved this conflict up until now, by telling himself that it is not practical to live a vegan lifestyle. This experience, which did not involve any subterfuge or manipulation (she never hid anything from him), has forced him to recognize that being vegan in the developed world in 2023 is really rather easy, and you don’t even have to give up many of the flavors that you love to live a life that does not involve cruelty and exploitation. He’s mad because he can no longer in good conscience rely on that crutch, so he’s directing his anger at her rather than at himself.

Our family doctor is not knowledgeable about vegan diets and we don't have the opportunity to find a vegan doctor. I am the only person in our family who is vegan and I'm learning what I can to keep my diet healthy. My kids are still wholely non vegan because the only guidance I can get from doctors is on an omnivore diet and kids diets are so delicate.
When I'm more experienced with balancing a vegan diet and when my kids will reliably take their vitamins (my 5 yr old is good with her vitamins but 1 yr old still refuses them) I'll give them the option to go vegan, but I have to put their health above my own moral convictions.
In vegan spaces I still see soon frequently 'just eat a diverse meal and you'll get what you need' which is very unhelpful. Especially with kids, deficiencies can be insidious and absolutely sneak up on you.

About the parents who were clueless about nutrition and had been vegan for years... well, I have seen what non-vegans eat and I think it is safe to say that good nutrition is accidental in so many cases. I knew of a family where the kids just at what they wanted all day, which would have been fine if the food visible and available had been varied. They basically ate sugary, colourful cereal throughout the day and had the odd burrito with a scattering of cheese on it, mw'd, from time to time. The mother would give them their multivitamins daily, without fail, with the idea that they had all they needed and were happy because they were not forced to eat food they didn't like. Another family I knew: the mother would go pick up the kids from school and would pass a pizza place. She'd stop outside and beep for how many pizza's she wanted (pizza dough, tomato sauce and cheese) or she would have been to McDonald's earlier in the day and picked up some kiddie burger boxes which she would pop in the microwave when the kids got home. The parents ate later and had steak, veg, and a carb or some equivalent, basically 'normal' food. These were both financially very well off people. In both families, kids had unlimited access to however many sweets/candies they wanted. So, apart from B12, what were these kids getting nutritionally? It certainly was not varied. Yes, I agree, people are stupid.

My take on most of these though is that all non vegans and most of the ‘vegans’ reference veganism as just a diet.
If anyone asks me my response is that I am vegan because of the horrendous treatment of certain animal species at the hands of humans and I don’t want to be a part of that any longer even in a small way. Whilst that always ends that particular conversation it leaves the non vegan in no doubt that offering me anything that includes an animal is going to be totally unacceptable and that avoids future issues.

I agree with you about the cookie thing. When I bring baked goods into my workplace office, I always make a vegan recipe just so they are dairy and egg free and most people can eat them regardless of diet. To me, that's a common courtesy when serving food in a public place. I've even made GF or nut free ones before. Also, baked goods are one of those things that are SO easy to make vegan and still taste good so IMO there's not really an excuse.

He even once accidentally ate a vegan burger at mc Donalds because they messed up our order & he only realised once he read the bill😂
Actually, after realising how well this works, we've been making vegan cakes on birthdays & I'm alway waiting untill the rest of my family started eating. That way, they don't know what's vegan & what isn't. ( The ones with allergies are informed of course)

The first one. The parent refusing to make adjustments for the child is sad. Coming from a vegan whose mum was able to make adjustments for me so I could eat every meal my family had. And they still all ate meat. Shed make all of the sides and accompaniments vegan so I could eat them (eg rather than using butter in veg, she will use olive oil) and then make me an alternative vegan option to the main meal. Eg a chicken curry for them and a veggie curry for me just by making one big sauce and then separating some out for me before adding meat. And she offered to do this for me because she loved me and supported my choice. And for context, I cook 75% of my own food, but when my mum decides she will be cooking for the whole family she makes sure to include me in that even though I'm vegan.

About the grandmother lying to her one and only grandson by saying no, it's not cow, it's beef and then going off in a huff and acting as if the child's mother was at fault, is something I have seen so often. People who consider themselves to be 'normal' because they do 'what everyone one else does' and cannot seem to stand that other people do differently, will try to get children to do what they do regardless of the children's parents' consideration. The grandmother was trying to 'score a point' by getting her forced-into-veganism-by-his-terrible-parents to eat some meat. If she had said to the mother, do you mind if I offer him some meat and the mother had said yes, but we call it cow and the two had discussed that out of earshot of the child, then things would have been quite different. Tolerance, people, tolerance. I've come across this with veganism, vegetarianism and home schooling. All are considered 'abnormal' and therefore reproachable by so many people who are not affected at all by our choices. Weird.

The "vegetarian GF lied about being vegan" story is exactly why I don't say "I'm a vegan". When asked, I say I have a "vegan preference" - I buy vegan food (with the exception of eggs for my husband but I don't eat them) and make vegan meals at home and for my packed lunches. If I'm at a restaurant, I may get the vegetarian or vegan option. If someone brings a vegetarian treat or meal to share to work, I might eat that. Of course, doesn't that just mean I'm vegetarian? Technically, yes, but my diet is mainly vegan (and I greatly appreciate it when I'm given a tasty vegan option to eat). Basically, I don't want to call myself a vegan and then have someone see me eat an omelette in a restaurant and go, "She's a liar!!!"

20:00 That’s one of the downsides of ethical vegans when compared to strict vegetarians who are so for health reasons. Those who exclude animal foods from their diet out of health concerns are usually well aware of any possible nutrient deficiency in their diet (precisely because their health is their main concern) whereas ethical vegans exclude any animal foods from their diet for the sake of the animals (that is, animals other than themselves).

For number 3 this woman sounds like the most entitled human I’ve ever seen. If you eat different from 99% of the population you cannot just expect people to ASSUME you are vegan especially when you are a plus one and don’t even know these people. You have to tell them and this person even said they would have changed the menu had she asked nicely. Also she wasn’t even directly invited to this dudes party she is a plus one which he was nice enough to allow to come and then for her to act that entitled to the host of a party who doesn’t even know or and didn’t invite her shows a lot about her character. Also to ask for not just one vegan option but 2 when she is the only vegan person. Like talk about being extra. People with peanut allergies have to tell people and they don’t even choose that plus it could kill them. So she should have to as well especially since this dude was nice enough to ask if anyone had specific dietary issues. Then to compare it to making Jewish people wear badges during the holocaust is disgusting and I wouldn’t want someone like that at my party. Vegan people are not oppressed like POCs, lgbtq people, etc. in fact a lot of vegan people are rich white people. Good lord. I would tell my friend who is bringing her that plus ones are no longer allowed 😂
For number 4, I get that it’s not the best time to bring that up but just watching my gf lie blatantly and make a fool of an innocent person while being a total hypocrite would make me snap too. Honestly I would be so insulted by my gf standing there and complaining about having to put up with animal products in our home when she put them on the menu and forced me to host the dinner party. She’s making her bf look like a total insensitive asshole in front of her new friend who doesn’t care about his gfs “veganism” when it’s a total lie. I would have done the same thing and she deserved to be called out. It also isn’t fair to her friend that she is literally lying to her and basing their entire friendship on a blatant lie.

About the 13yo in a family of 8 children, and having had five teens in my life, I'm going to hazard a guess that one of the reasons for the girl going vegan might have been a means of getting a little extra attention - she might be the child who has always managed to get the most attention so I'm not saying the parents neglected her at all, or any of the other kids, just that some kids are 'attention greedy' while others just go and do their own thing quite happily and most seem somewhere in the middle. So, if she went vegan and her parents just said 'sure, yeah', then what? well, she had no choice but to 'escalate'. Perhaps all the parents had to do was put a box in all of the fridges with 'vegan' written on it and only vegan stuff could go in there. Next, the parents could have gone online with their daughter and looked up vegan dietary needs. The groceries for a vegan are actually almost the same as those for a non-vegan if the diet is healthy. If it is not, then it will be vastly different - ready meals, meat based packaged meal starters, etc. So, the mention of different groceries seems to lean towards a rather unhealthy diet. Pasta with meatballs if made from scratch, simple: remove a portion of pasta and sauce before adding the meatballs and add lentils or beans to the vegan version. So, it seems the parents were making their own life more difficult than it needed to be and so did the daughter. If a child wants to go vegan, it's not that difficult for their parent to spend 20mn googling vegan nutrition, right? preferably with the child. Learning moment for all involved. Good stuff.

I’m gonna make a whole different comment for the second one bc my first was super long but yeah I agree you should never keep your meat in the vegetable drawer. Like wtf does he mean it’s the best place to keep it like that is a vegetable drawer for a reason. My fridge, which is a really old one so I’m sure newer fridges have even more storage options, has a specific drawer for dairy/lunch meat which is kinda small but that’s bc it’s meat for ONLY meat and cheese and stuff bc once again like you said meat should be kept separate. I tell my mom the same thing that if she wants to buy meat please do not put it near my vegetables, fruit or anything else fresh. It’s funny he doesn’t want the meat in his yogurt but has no problem putting it on someone else’s vegetables. He could at least put the meat into a few plastic bags doubled up and zipped so there isn’t any chance of it seeping into anything else. My family always froze our meat anyway the chance of it going bad before you can eat it is much lower and we also kept all of our meat like that in the downstairs basement freezer so it was separate form like ice cream, frozen veg and other stuff. Mind you my family were huge meat eaters growing up so even they didn’t carelessly put them with the vegetables.
They need to shit down and come up with a compromise that they are both happy with. Has dude ever considered getting a mini fridge specifically for meat or a freezer bc a lot of ppl do that anyway for sanitation reasons. Like if your roommate was allergic to peanuts you aren’t gonna store an opened jar of peanut butter on top of their vegetables so why can’t he compromise. He isn’t this persons parent so he can’t just be like “no this is how we do it” it is a shared living space they both pay for and so they should make compromises.

When I was 14 I decided to go vegan. At first it was for health reasons and then slowly evolved into ethical and then eventually ethical and environmental reasons. My parents did the same thing as the dad did in the beginning where they paid for my food but I’d have to plan and cook all my own foods. Eventually my mom started occasionally cooking vegan meals for me and my parents even bought me this really cool vegan cookbook and me and they would try some of the stuff I made especially my mom. I never asked for special pans or to have an entire fridge for myself bc that’s absolutely ridiculous and such a spoiled brat thing to do. We literally had 3 fridge/freezers in the house for 4 of us and I still didn’t ask for one bc they each had a special purpose like the beer/drink fridge outside😂 (with all the stickers covered in it, if you are in MD you will relate lmao). Since I never asked for insane shit like buying me hundreds of dollars worth of pots and pans it never became an issue. Mind you my dad is like your typical Irish middle aged American dad who’s diet consists of meat, dairy, potatoes, and jack daniels. We even had a literal hunting closest in our house filled with guns and camo clothing 😂 Tbh tho he would hunt every once in a while but never killed a deer which he said was bc he refused to kill babies and females but I think he felt bad. He’d occasionally kill ducks but mostly he just liked to fish. He respected my choice tho and I was just appreciative that my parents paid for my after I got a job at 16 and even after I was 18 but still living there. We always cooked our meatballs separate from the pasta anyway and since my mom cooked most of the vegetables she had no problem separating out a little bit of mash potatoes for me before she added butter. Just reminds me how grateful I am to have parents that never forced me to eat food I didn’t want to.
I eat I guess what you would call flexitarian now bc when I was homeless and in and out of rehab for over 6 years I had to stop being vegan bc I literally didn’t have a choice. I lived in the HOOD so it was already a food desert and when you are homeless it’s even harder to get vegan food especially during Covid. I just ate what people gave me when pan handling or I would get lunches from this school that gave them out in my area or $50 snack cakes at the corner store. Yeah it basically sucked to say the least. When I was in rehab and especially in jail I either ate what they gave me or didn’t eat at all. I live with my mom now since I got clean and since I cook all of our meals we both eat almost entirely plant based but we do occasionally eat like honey or eggs especially when going out to eat. It’s funny bc my mom would never be mostly plant based if it wasn’t because of me constantly reminding her how the animal industry is horrible lol and she had no problem eating what I cook. As for my other family members I just make vegan stuff and don’t tell them until after they eat it and love it. My aunts father in law yesterday said my corn bread (which is vegan) was the best corn bread he’s ever had and everyone else basically said the same thing too. They are even more of heavy meat eaters than my immediate family like I mean they have an entire game room full of deer heads and even a bear and a bunch of ducks. I made a vegan cake too and they all LOVES that too and are even asking me to make them other baked goods like bread and stuff. I am a pastry chef by trade tho so my stuff is really good lol.
I think this dad took it too far like you said when he got mad and was just like “you are no longer allowed to be vegan under my roof”. If it was me and let’s say for example and I was a heavy meat eater and my daughter wanted to go vegan I would do what you said and sit her down and have her explain to me why exactly she wants to be vegan and what made her decide that as well as exactly how important to her it is. If it’s for ethical reasons I would have no problem cooking stuff separately or buying vegan pasta bc I wouldn’t be so stubborn as to cause my child actual emotional distress and pain bc I’m too stuck in my ways. If it’s your kid you should want them to be happy and not feel guilty over everything they eat. If they try and pull the shit she did I would be like “that fridge is for the family, we have 8 children and we need the extra space. I have no problem with you continuing your veganism and I will still pay for it but if you want your own fridge you can walk to the garage and if you want your own pans you can get a job or do chores to make money and pay for it yourself. Or you can just keep your stuff with ours in the normal fridge and deal with it.” I’m sure if it’s that important to her then that compromise should be good enough. He didn’t need to ban her from being vegan just bc she made a couple demands I didn’t like. If I really didn’t wanna cook stuff separately I would be like why don’t you help with dinner and make the pasta yourself so you can separate some oil first before we add the animal products. Most pasta is vegan anyway so refusing to use pasta without egg is kinda ridiculous. This is way longer than I planned for lol oops.

Most hunters I know only kill older bucks. They have taught their children (daughters & sons) to do the same.
I think a vegan would probably have a very hard time in my office. It’s all emergency services personnel and many of them are hunters. Every get together has food co workers obtained by hunting.
It’s a large part of life in Southern Appalachia. Many of the guys in my class that came from struggling families would get up at 3am and hunt before school. My dad started hunting small game at 8 years old to help his family survive. His father was a WWII veteran who did not come back from the war the same. He became a raging, abusive, alcoholic who drank all the money.
Luckily they had a small garden and lived close to their maternal grandparents who constantly gave them fresh vegetables but rabbit and squirrel provided needed protein.
I refused to touch any game until someone kinda tricked me into eating deer when I was in my 20s. I thought it was beef stew and he didn’t correct me. I wasn’t a vegetarian or vegan. I ate meat. I just wasn’t fond of the idea of hunting.
I found out it was deer when I went back for my second bowl. It was that good.
Now I partake at work gatherings 1-2 times a year.

Stories 1, 3 & 4 already sound extremely faked for reactions, as are many posts on reddit

Food should never be punishment. Turn this situation around, say the boy was bullying his meat eating sister. So his mother punished him by forcing him to eat carnivore for 30 days. Is that ok? Punishing children with food can cause permanent psychological damage.

Vegan cookies that I’ve had are pretty gross (I have vegan family members), making nasty cookies for a bunch of people who can eat normal cookies would defeat the purpose when only one person would even benefit. I have several people at my campus ministry that are gluten free, dairy free, diabetic, and plenty more. You just can’t meet everybody’s needs, if you decide to eat in a way that is very different from others you need to accept that there are going to be times that you will not be accommodated (everything I listed is not a decision, yet most are more mature about not being accommodated than many vegans and other self inflicted dietary restrictions). Especially when you don’t need to eat it. I’m an extremely picky eater, and when I don’t like something, I just don’t eat it. It’s annoying, but I’m adult, have a kitchen, and buy my own groceries. I frequently eat something before I go to a place where I’m unsure about what is available, so if all I like there is dinner rolls or something small I will not have an issue and I can get something after if needed. But no one needs cookies that someone unexpectedly brings in. Be upfront with your question, and realize that if you can have it, that’s great. If not, others will enjoy it.
