  • Kentwood Fire Department just got delivered a brand new 2022 Spartan pumper. You get to see the truck BEFORE it goes into service. Chief Brent Looman walks us through the planning and thought process for completing this truck. Chief does a great job describing where the tools will be located and the reasoning behind the decisions. The CLEAN CAB concept is new to Heroes Next Door and it was exciting to see health and safety concerns being addressed in the apparatus itself. Hope this gives you ideas for your next pumper!

As a resident of Kentwood, I'm super happy to see this truck being put together. I watched engine 51 responding as 53, so it was probably when this was being put together, and I love to know what goes into making stuff happen.
And for everyone complaining about the clean cab, I rarely hear fire calls on the radio. It's mostly vehicle accidents and medical calls, which don't usually require bunker gear.

YES, lot more EMS calling today in Firefighting
Do the guys want to live with a Cancer for rest of there lives, the Pain you go through in treatment. I understand the thoughts on wanting to be ready as soon as first Due arrived. But they must think of there Health first and foremost. Look at the Manning issues with the cuff virus. So meany out on sick call. Does it really take that long to suit up. You suit up at station ( same time it takes to suit up at scene. Putting on a AirPack in a seat of moving vehicle versus being on ground no movement ( You yourself standing) just think a clean cab is a HEATHY cab, to ride in. Let the compartment in back get CANCER, plus it's easyer to
Clean a wall in compartment than a Air Pack holding seat.

Some of the bigger proponents of clean cabs such as Miami and Phoenix have recognized that the clean cab concept has failed. Truck specs are returning back to SCBA in seat. Let’s be honest we can easily wash our gear and SCBA post fire. Throwing your pants and coat on quick before you get on the truck and completing the donning process enroute to a scene is 100% faster than rushing on scene to get dressed.

Te Nordic European regions have started testing it (only SCBA tho) and the delay is approximatley 5-10 seconds. They have done it for safety reason in traffic colisions to prevent the tanks for flying all around the cab if the locks fail but of course also to decrease the chance of cancer, you will never get all the particales of the mask or tank.

In the UK we have had a National Fire, Police, Ambulance and Military radio system since 2006 and were due an update in 2020! We are also working on National Ambulance specification where all the cupboard's and kit is in the same place. This will allow greater resilience in multi-service incidents. It is not uncommon where I work that the Rapid Response Solo Paramedics could be backed by an Ambulance from two different Services.

Shame to see a clean cab...I'm all for cancer prevention, but not at the hindrance of doing your job as effectively as possible. For example, you removed gear and SCBA's from your cab but not the TIC? This truck seems more EMS and Hazard oriented than firefighting, still a great looking truck and will undoubtedly serve the community very well. As always great video you guys, thank you for providing us with all varieties of trucks that are out there operating. Nobody operates exactly the same and no two trucks are the same.

On a lot of the older trucks and ways of doing it the scba’s were actually stored in the cabinets of the truck, especially in the 70s and 80s, at least put in the country down here in the south. The canopy cabs and the queen cab trucks with the packs on the tailboard or cabinets. Same as it used to be. You either spend time donning gear at the station or at the scene, same amount of time if not really close

I may be wrong about it but. I think since the turnout gear can be wash often or after major event in house with a gear extractor. There should be less contaminent then on scba strap assembly etc also the seat seem to be easier to clean then a scba seat mount.
They may also want them to wear the turnout gear inside the cab for getting out in cold weather rain.

I Hear you all on the clean cab, I do. I remember when the officers talked about there is no way a Pick up will replace the Chevy suburban as a command vehicle. Well look at all FDs now, every one has a pick up with canopy for separation of gear not being in back seat area. I look back at the mini Pumpers coming say 20 to 30+ years ago. One of this guys videos shows a FD with a F-550 that carry 500 gallon of water, first out main Engine because of access to homes with long Drives, a Regular size pumper is to big. Look at the short wheel bases of those Wildlands Fire Engines that the State of California buys, all the same type of Engines
Smaller than a full size pumper. The mini Pumpers went away to a bigger Engine from the past. If the NFPA makes a ruling on NO gear/Air Packs in front area, the FDs must spec there Equipment to that standard. The way Air Packs sit behind seats in cabs, there is always dirty areas that are hard to reach for Disinfecting that area. YES you are all Right about the time of a Firefighter being suited up when they get to scene. But CANCER is a life Time sickness. The Chief in this video said ( 3 of his guys have Cancer) I'm only asking you all to think about yourself, your Life. Is it really that important to spend a few minutes, suiting up at scene. Yes I realize that there might be People that need Rescue from BURNING building/ vehicle, but YOU have to live with that CANCER for the rest of your life. What is more important for YOU. That short time ( the Chief in this video says it take just second's ) to suit up at scene. I do understand your thoughts on wanting to be ready to fight fire or save a Life as soon as you arrive. But look also at your Life's Health. Without you there is no Rescue of People in need. I don't know of a Firefighter that wants to live with CANCER, the pain you go through as you age. You NOT being able to do the JOB you Loved, going out on EARLY Retirement, because you got Health issues. Please just think about your Health. There is a reason you must have a clean cab. I see the clean cab consent being a NEW rule going forward.

if you have 2 engine companies arriving at the scene of separate working house fires with people trapped ….One engine company has firefighters fully geared up w/ scbas . The other engine company is configured like this one . Firefighters and officer not fully geared up , no scbas . There is no way , no way possible the time to stretch an attack line and get personal in the building is same amount of time for both companies. Just doesn’t make sense . If the gear is contaminated after a fire , they could store it in one of the cabinets on the way back to the firehouse . They all have minimum of 2 sets of gear nowadays and some even have extractors to clean the contaminated gear

Dress at the station pack on in the truck gives you time to make sure the pack is on right while responding and youre not rushing and screw it up your life relies on the fact that you did it right you also lose compartment space on the truck for other equipment and also if you roll up you have to get out without the ability to go on air there may be that time that you need to be on air from the time you arrive till the time you leave based off whats in the air may have an anhydrous ammonia leak you want to be on air before you even arrive

    • @Ameri-Texan

I admit I'm not as experienced as many, but I absolutely disagree with not being ready to roll as soon as the air break hits.
You roll on to scene to see a fully involved house fully rolling, your adrenaline is gonna be through the roof, you're gonna be antsy to get in. Plus just bad optics to the community to see you get off without even your bunker gear on.
I'm all for evolving policies and ways of doing things from the past as we learn more about cancer. But with anything, you can quickly go overboard.
I'm all for hot and cold zones in the station, this or that. But if a crew rolls up and hopes out in their station gear as my house is rolling. I'm gonna be pissed
