  • Join me on a mini adventure to Bella Bella and Shearwater with a quick stop at Namu. A couple weeks after arriving to work, I was given a day off to pick up Tinny and Good Hope 4 & 5, Ted and Dwaynes boats.
We shopped for supplies in Bella Bella and enjoyed a nice lunch at Fishermans restaurant on Denny island.
We picked up the boats from Dons. Tinny was hauled behind the Chuckwalla. Dwayne drove his boat GH5 and Christian, our maintenance man, drove Teds boat, GH4. We had a little issue on our way back to the lodge but everyone returned home safely.
I hope you enjoy our scenic adventure on the west coast!

Had my 19th birthday at Shearwater while heading back from a herring opening in the north coast back in 1981. Hit a storm in Millbanke Sound and half sunk the skiff behind the troller we were in. Spent the day bailing the skiff at Shearwater dock and headed to the Pub afterwards. Obviously got ID ed and the staff at the Pub quickly figured out it was my 19th birthday and gave me , my first legal bottle of beer ( stubby old style lager). On the house, of course because the people here, were and probably still are, first class. Will remember it as long as I will live. Such a beautiful place.

So nice to be in the company of Ted and Dwayne Walkus again.... Ted being typically understated about the memories of his childhood. I could smell the cedars, hemlock and fir again! Many thanks until the next one.

Wow so many memories of Namu when BC Packers owned it. One time when we were returning from a fishing opening, (I was the skipper on a Salmon Seiner) while my dad was on the wheel we hit the rock just off from the island in front of Namu, all was well and now I get a chuckle out of it. So sad to see Namu in such disrepair but it brought many great memories. Keep the videos coming, I am addicted. LOL

Hi Tom! Great question. The cannery was in operation between 1845 and 1940. But there is a lot of the original wood and even the boilers that cooked the salmon are still in place. They had fallen down through the floor at one point, long before I started working here in 2018. The current owner has put a lot of effort into restoring the cannery and has done an amazing job with a great team.
