For those of you saying the intro to this video seems familiar, it's likely because I recap a previous video I made on the "80 Second Rule of Red Dead Redemption 2." Here's the link in case you want more information on how these tests were performed: ua-cam.com/video/a20rYOIY0gk/v-deo.html
Good video, but i don't agree. Your missing some of the core parts of the game. Part of RDR2 is the you engaging into the environment. Just on the few shots you have shown, i saw multiple opportunities to gather new items, animals to hunt, and if i survey my surroundings i would find multiple events happening from a distance. It might be a train passing, or a stagecoach to rob. I think it kept to the rule, It just depends if your a player that runs through story and jumps online, or a player that tries to take every opportunity to hunt, gather, rob, ride a horse full speed weaving and taking dangerous chances through tight spaces. I like to play very random and not follow exact paths to long, you should give it a try, it will make any game more exciting. I know many people that thought it was very boring outside of the story line, smh.
Story DLC is almost certainly on the way. Part of why GTA V's single player DLC was cancelled was because the games multiplayer blew up and simply was a better money making opportunity. Red Dead 2 is different however. Rockstar are more than aware that the reason Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best selling game of 2018 was not because people bought it for the multiplayer. They 100% know that Red Dead 2 blew up because of its amazing single-player. Thus, going merely on the past, it is almost certain that Rockstar will seek to capitalise on the popularity of the single-player by giving us multiple single-player story DLC's. Rockstar are a smart company. They know what they are doing. From what I can see, its not a matter of will they make single-player DLC, but when. Also, they do not appear to be pushing Red Dead 2 Online that hard (especially compared to how they did with GTA V), which is another good sign for their realisation that Single-Player DLC is what people want.
The exploration in Red Dead 2 was a wet dream of mine. I love just riding through the countryside, picking plants, talking to travelers. Rockstar managed to make every part of gameplay (most, anyway) feel fun.
Exactly one day while I was playing rd2 l found myself walking the grasslands enjoying the scene hunting speaking to who rode by on horses it’s something how far rockstar has came
It's everything that I wished the first RD was. My favorite gameplay loop was just traveling to something on the other side of the map and taking my time to get there. Stopping to set up camp when it got dark, eating a meal then sleeping till morning, and packing up to ride of again. I loved stopping to hunt for a few carcasses on my way back to the gang hideout so I could carry a deer over to Pearson. Every little detail that allowed you to just "live" in that world drew me in so much.
@@adamosgood shallow and stupid?? Is that why review scores are over the roof on this game? Gimme a break, I like the witcher 3 don't get me wrong, but the level of immersion isn't anywhere near the level of rdr2. Traversing the world gets boring after a while because it isn't as interactive as rdr2, and the horse riding feels lame.
The first thing I wanted in this game was fast travel at first. I almost thought it would be boring to horse ride everywhere right? Wrong. The first time I fast travelled I know I made a mistake. I was missing opportuinities to communicate with NPC's and discovering strangers and so much more... and then I never fast travelled even if I wanted to go to the other end of the map. Rockstar nailed that bit so much that I might follow this in every game maybe. This made the game so much heavy. So connected to the character that sometimes I right out felt for that fictional character in a video game. Not just pain, but his jokes, his regret, his anger and his love. This might get lost in a big comment section but I will wholeheartedly say that rockstar just made a game that is just worth it. Thank your Rockstar. Thank you Arthur. On behalf of every single-player gamer.
this game is a bloody masterpiece, i was hooked on it for like 2 months straight and got 100% completition, its easily my favourite game of all time its the first game to beat witcher 3 for me, rockstar games are truly masters at making games
@@rosscopicoltrane3749 well i replayed it from start to finish took it super slow did a ton of hunting and all that before going to chapter 6 (for obvious reasons)
Same. You care about Arthur. You actually care. And not just while you're playing. You leave this game, and it effects you as a person in the same way stuff like Kurosawa's Yojimbo, or Gone with the Wind did. RDR2 isn't unique in being art, but it is art., and its narrative makes you actually care. It's odd, actually. GTA is a satire of American commercialism and the violence and sex in pop culture. RDR1 is satire of the glorification of the west. Somewhere along the line of creating RDR2, I feel like Rockstar grew up a bit, and suddenly forgot they were making a satire. This game isn't satire in the slightest. It is instead a loving tribute to a period of cinema and history.
@@Armataan yes totally. i finished this game around a month ago and i still think about it, about characters and decisions i made. i even listen to some of the songs
Julian Rain I’m intentionally putting off finishing it because I’m at the point where each mission now seeing Arthur’s growth but also knowing his ending from spoils is just making me sad 😔😔
Anon I finished it last week so I obviously knew what would happen but I was still crying the whole time and praying certain characters would make certain decisions
Man since I beat it I've been trying to play other games just to help me get over it, but nothing is working. All games I played so far are completely failing at immersing me the same way or even pique my interest at all, and I inevitably start comparing them to RDR2.
The part where you ride back to camp for the last time made me cry like a baby. With the honorable play through it really seems like Arthur fully understood and accepted his life, and knew exactly what he was supposed to do with the rest of it. Red Dead Redemption 2 will always be one of my favorite games of all time.
I get the point you're making about the horses but I feel obliged to mention that the horse will indeed avoid trees and rocks in its path if you stop trying to navigate the trees with the control stick and just tap the A/X button. It's not a completely fool proof solution but 8 out of ten times, if you just tap the sprint button thru a copse of trees, your horse will weave past any trees directly in its path. The horses in RDR are smarter than people give them credit for because everybody tries to navigate themselves and everybody ends up faceplanting a tree. Have faith. That's all I wanted to say.
Honestly I learned how to ride horses real quick and only crashed into stuff a handful of times, I quickly learned to travel slowly through dense woods or where I learned the rocks were at, learned the lay of the land down to the rocks and trees.
Some horses are better at navigating than others, the arabian horses just do what they want, turkoman and missouri fox trotter do a much better job imo.
i agree.. i never have issues with trees and rocks, I know when to relinquish control to my steed, Sarah (named after Sarah Jessica Parker due to the resemblance). The only time I tend to crash is when I keep control and knowingly try some foolish shit.
Lol witcher 3, god of war, even spiderman is more fun than this overrated piece of trash. Rdr 2 is boring as hell, its basically just a horse riding simulator. Drag out mission and story, repetitive side quest. The only thing that's good in this game is just the graphic lmao
God and the payoff for your patience with inhabiting this world is one of the most memorable for me in gaming history. I was shaken when I finished this game in a way I don't think I've ever been from a movie or game. Arthur is a real real person... he just is.. I don't know even know how to describe what I felt
RDR2 proved that a "smaller" open world with less fast travel options encourage players to explore more. Open world games are getting to big nowadays, and its not the size that matters but what you do with that size. BTW Great video Luke :)
GTA V is a last gen game that is soon to be 6 years old, so not a very recent game anymore. "smaller" compared to say for example a Ubisoft game like AC Odyssey or ghost recon wildlands.
A lot of locations in AC Odyssey is copy pasted over and over. One of the reasons why they did this is because the world is too big for its own good. . RDR2 is by no means a small game, but its "smaller" compared to a lot of other open world games today, and thats a good thing. Therefore i used the quote on quote mark "smaller"
@@Boosted_5.0 I'm not gonna judge an entire studio and ignore whatever good games they have put out just because one of the games didn't pass the bar. Naughty dog still stands where it did to me 1 year ago.
It's the best game I've ever played. I just don't get bored of it like other games. Been playing is almost every night since it was released and I'm still finding something new to do or an area to explore. Utter masterpiece without an equal.
After finishing red dead redemption 2, I feel like I just finished an amazing lego set. Let me explain. Playing through the games story is like building the lego set. We see our protagonists, john and Arthur slowly build up, like how the set does. But once we finish the story, we are left with a fully developed john marston, like the fully finished set. We now have this big lego set to play around in, representing the open world of rdr2. But, as we all know, building the set is the set is the most fun part, but you dont see that when you're actually doing it. This is because you're too busy trying to rush the story in order to unlock st Austin. For lego, this is where you put your lego set on the shelf, never to be used again. sure, you'll still play it from time to time, but it wont have the same charm it once had. Furthermore, this outstanding set is so good, you cant imagine a better set/game. This is the problem with rdr2. It makes in the highest tier games look weird.
NO your horse will avoid trees if you let go of the directional stick and just press gallop. Try it with a forest full of trees, your horse will avoid every one of them if you LET GO of the directional stick and just press gallop. Just aim your horse in a general direction you want to go and just press gallop. You'll NEVER hit a tree again.
Which makes sense since a real horse wouldn't run straight into a tree unless you forced him to. While playing RDR2 it really felt like my horse had a mind of his own, which really added to the experience and immersion. Having to clean, feed, calm, pet my horse was nothing like a chore to me, I did it with pleasure, and the scene when Arthur says goodbye to the horse while he passes away was so powerful because of that reason, it really felt like losing a character with whom I had built a relationship with for the entirety of the game since I had kept the exact same horse for the entire time. RDR2 has the best horse gameplay out of any game I've ever played, dethroning RDR1, and not just because the riding feels amazing and cool and realistic, but for the reason that it becomes an actual part of the story. God I love this game.
Awesome video!! I love this game so much and I understand exactly what you're saying when you feel the emotion of the character you're playing. Video games used to say "GET AWAY from YOURSELF and BE this character" now they're starting to say "FIND YOUR character and BE THAT character".
@@JudgeHolden2003 I’ve played the Witcher 3, and IMO it doesn’t hold a candle to rdr2. Gerald doesn’t hold a candle to Arthur and most of the side characters, I just didn’t care about like I do with the van der linde gang members.
I noticed when playing RDR2 I fast-traveled way less than any other free-roam game like Skyrim for an example. I would enjoy riding my horse, camping whenever it got dark, and taking my time to my destination. I really love RDR2 lol it's such a great game!
xDD In what? Visual detail. The gameplay is sub-par even compared to the bottom-line sandbox standards and the narrative is beyond stereotypical. And that quest design, oh my god... There`s a reason GoW was GOTY.
Know Never really tho and RDR1 was on of my favorite games kf all time and RDR2 was a shit show the story was oh so lack luster and boring and the gameplay was sooooooo bad and boring! I guess that's what happens when you play without auto aim tho. I almost guarantee everyone who played and didn't notice the awful gameplay had auto aim on but that only adds to the fact the game is also frustratingly easy!😡😂 I really don't understand all the praise. It was a good game imo but people saying it was the best and most innovative thus far?😂😂😂
@@OTG1776 And turning off auto-aim will only break the gameplay, it`s not designed as a real shooter usually is, but somehow still so stiff clunky that you won`t notice the difference other than when fighting on horseback. And with auto-aim on... I mean, it must be fun for autists. Aim in the direction of your opponent, nudge the stick up slightly, headshot. Rinse and repeat - aka: shooter mechanics. And then you get the quest design that not just holds your hand, but puts you in an armbar and leads you around and a narrative that glorifies its cliché and stereotypicality by unfolding extremely slow even for a western. Anything will sell well if a R* logo is slapped on it mostly, especially if its a console exclusive. It`s rather popular than recognized. The all in all 4 game awards and no GOTY pretty much speaks for itself, it`s the fans (because of the R* logo and some big numbers like "8 years!") and casual sites giving the praise, while many are paid off or just bend to peer pressure from the fans.
@@Rooster832 It won more awards (nominated for 8, failing 4), but not the Game of the Year award. There`s quite a difference. No, RDR2 did not win GDC, the GDC is held on March 18 this year, it`s only nominated so far.
Great vid. I love watching/listening to vids like yours because there is so much that goes into a game let alone people who play and study them to the level of detail that you do!
The 1992 Dream Team ehhh I duno... that game was amazing. Don’t get me wrong: RDR was my personal favorite but I was blown away by God Of War as well and I must say I think the story was executed slightly better than RDR2. I’ll probably get crucified for saying this but Red Dead’s story was actually it’s weakest part imo. Still a great story especially compared with most AAA games these days but it felt pretty predictable and stagnant at times.
Taylor James I guess although it’s not like we knew much of anything about the events that occurred before RDR1. The writing just felt kind of lazy/sloppy. “We need more money, we need to move camp!” Got pretty stale after five chapters. There were some exceptions (Rains Fall storyline was great, they should have expanded that more). I just felt the story was it’s weakest part whereas that was one of GOW’s biggest strengths. This is of course just my opinion.
Uh. Predictible? I knew what was going to happen in God of War within 15 minutes of the game starting. If you pay any attention at all during the funerary rite, and the fight with Baldur, you know Atraeus is Loki, and that he will kill Baldur. Within 30 minutes of the game beginning, you know that he is a child of a god and a giant and that he is going to kill his father and literally upon meeting Freya, you know who she is. No aspect of God of War's story was remotely surprising to anybody with an even passing familiarity with norse fable. And you complain that RDR 2 is predictable?
In all reality, RDR2 went back to a forgotten style of open world games. The lack of fast traveling was definitely present in old classics like Xenogears and Final Fantasy 1 - 9. This isn't something new, obviously, but it's definitely a lost art that RDR2 was able to execute pretty damn well.
“RockStar really did something incredible” Yes,they did. This game will be a part of my gaming entertainment for “quite”....some time and other game developers should really take note of the diamond that is the Red Dead series.
I have never had more of a connection with a character than I did in this game. I played the game only turning Author into a good Honorable man. This game actually affected me on a whole other level. This game is about a real man dealing with a changing world that is killing him, nothing works out the way we want, but we push on and don't let go of what we believe in. This game is meta.
You’ve got a good point about the no minimal during fast travel. It’s affected my own traveling so that I won’t even use location markers anymore. I’m much more aware of my surroundings when navigating road signs and checking the map
(Murray Voice) The results are in, in the test of "pidgeons to gunfire" being true or false.... (crowd gets quiet) the test has revealed that statement.... WAS A LIE
Just stumbled across your channel. Very well done. I hardly ever subscribe, but you sir, definitely earned it. Refreshing to see video games reviewed maturely. Not all gamers are mouth breathing, raging adolescents. Instant fan.
Honestly the praise and critics of this game are practically the same. In a way i'm actually very glad Rockstar went in this direction. Too often in the gaming industry a game will set a trend and every game after follows the trend. Then when a game comes out that's on the same production scale as every other triple A title people are mad that the didn't do what every other game did. You wouldn't believe how many people complain and then drop the "look at what ____ did you shouldn't make a game like this" Your enjoyment on a game should be based on the experience that game put you through. Not whether or not its like The Witcher 3 or whatever your favorite game is.
I’ve hated online since it came out but the campaign, it has the best story I’ve ever played with the interactions and strong character build. I really don’t know how God of War got game of the year, this game truly deserved it.
Well, it was a toss up. Last year there were some amazing games that came out. I loved RDR2, GOW and Spiderman. Im not a comic book guy, but the Spiderman game was very good imo. God of War was amazing. To me, any of those could have gotten goty and I would have been ok with it.
@MyWORDisntGospel I think it’s stupid how a PlayStation exclusive game got game of year like how is it fair is pc or Xbox users didn’t get to test the game.
Siege Marauder you know, now that I think of it, Spiderman is PS4 only as well. I don’t know man. That’s a good point you make. If you can ever snag a PS4pro, I highly recommend GOW and Spiderman (unless you already have played them). They’re both really good games.
i remember one of the things i loved about FFXV was the silence in the car at times. just riding with your buddies, listening to music, taking in the scenery. it felt genuine. so much bonding happened with the characters with so little exposition (especially for a FF game) and it created a wonderful gameplay experience. the traveling was part of the fun, near the end maybe it got a little repetitive, but never enough to make me fast travel. it wasn't a burden like having to clear out a factory you had been 4 times before for some NPC in Fallout 4, instead it was central to the game. it's the same for RDR2, when you are talking with another character the dialogue feels authentic, it feels like real people are talking and not just characters in a story. and when you're not talking the silence of just riding with them, or when you're by yourself and the sounds of the world around you are only punctuated by praising your horse or an occasional "howdy mister!" to a passerby, pulled me deeper into the world. i love riding across the world, it's a pleasure rather than a chore to just get from point a to point b. the story is such an important part of a game, but so much of what we fall in love with and remember, at least for me, are the worlds, and the characters, the emotions that they evoke stand out to me just as much as any plot twist or amazing set piece moment. letting the world breathe and just be, and allowing the player to live and explore in that makes for a better gameplay experience, and you're right, RDR2 nailed it.
i had it too like a full one and i realized allot who did it too playt as a bad person and the most ones who not ,did it wiht good honnor ,just interesting .But for reall i like it if i would not play a girl in online then i would do it there too(but i changed it sometimes in storymode)
Rdr2 is not a game, Rockstar has created an entire living-breathing world which has so much complexity to it that it feels real. Thats why they were able to increase idle time by 2x.
(Interesting Event)???? I disagree with the 40 second statement.... the landscape in rdr2 is interesting because it's so damned beautiful , so the timing feels shorter than 40 seconds not doubled. Its more interesting than half the slapstick characters you do missions for or hunting the same animals over and over and it's really the glue to the game. If the landscape graphics didn't look so good and carry the game it would be a 7/10
Kinda was hoping this was a video about an update for RDO lmao... :( tbh, I legit took my saddle on a 14 minute journey through a thunderstorm, got bit by a damn muskrat... lol
The lack of fast travel also reminds you of past events I often found myself traveling and them remembering “I caught my dinner here once” or “that’s the river that damn bounty made me follow”
Not joking now, the moment i finished rdr2 i stopped playing games... I honestly dont enjoy any other story game anymore, no mobas, no battle royals, nothing lmao Guess it was too good
@@JudgeHolden2003 played it way back in 2017... Witcher 3 is one of the best games I've played...but not on par with RED DEAD 2... read dead's characters, storytelling and the environment just too good and atmospheric...
Great overview and video. It is so true you can just get lost in the game. That’s the fun design of it, and it’s wonderful to do so. I’ve spent hours game hunting, and never liked game hunting before playing this. To me, this is easily the Game of the Year.
Really enjoyed the video. You have a pleasant voice to listen to and you didnt pad the video with unnecessary trivial info. Youve earned yourself another sub!
What a refreshing video about my favourite game of all time. I played the original Red Dead on the PS3 and I loved it then. Red Dead Redemption has exceeded my expectations the emotions this game has evoked are amazing.... Full credit to Rockstar because I have never played a game that has reduced me to tears as this one did. My emotions were all over the place throughout but the ending broke my heart... The interaction with the characters within the gameplay dictates how it will end... Amazing game. I am looking forward to your upcoming review of the game. 👍
The fetch quests, cliche story, and terrible villain ruined the game for me over the years. The only thing I think fondly of when looking back are some of the companions, like Cole and Dorian. But games like RDR2 and Witcher 3 really raised my standards.
I've never understood why anyone would use fast travel *all* the time. I can understand why it would be implemented in games to avoid running back and forth to the same spot in a short period. But doing it all the time just completely defeats the point of an open world, because shouldn't the point of the game be to travel across that world?
I used the stage coach maybe 3 times throughout my 80+ hours I have played the game so far. I never thought why only showing the names of the towns while selecting a fast travel point. Now I realize it made me remember the names of them and correlate them to certain details to remember them by so I know the name by just being in the town. If they did that on purpose with the stagecoach fast travel that was smart on them.
Great game all round except for all the immature griefing muppets in online let's hope the update on the 26th helps to stop these diaper wearing fortnite rejects
Imo every AC game since AC3 is just uninspired trash. They clearly kept doing them because of money reasons, the actual story makes no more sense at all anymore, it's really sad.
Good thing i stopped at ACIII...didn’t even finish it if i remember right. I might pick up odyssey in the future and thats only because i’m from greece.
Especially if you play it right after beating RDR2. That's what happened to me, and boy did it disappoint. The horses alone in AC:O were just so bad it makes you wanna scream in agony and feel genuine sorrow as you inevitably start comparing the two. Everything about AC:O is just light years behind RDR2.
one friend introduced me to Red Dead Redemption on PS3, and from playing that game, I started to like exploration in open world games... rdr2 makes it 1000 times better. I can even say that I used Witcher 3 fast travel maybe 5 times... and it took me a year of playing 2 to 3 daily hours to complete with it's dlc, mostly cause exploration was so rewarding....well, this game is even better.
So the thing with the example of the last of us for me is, I didn't care really about the dad or the kid AT THE BEGINNING. So I'm forced to care because she is a kid, and feel bad for the dad? It was sad and hard to watch, but.. Feels like emotional manipulation. Yes I came to invest as the game went on and it did serve as a back story piece. Was a good game, no doubt, not my game to play really, but good and I get why people love it so much. But rdr2.. When your *spoiler* gets *spoiler* with you after all that time you play through the game with it, if you so choose.. I fucking lost it and had to play the end through tears. And then to see it end being dishonorable. I raged and turned off my Xbox. So I can get the whole thing of just leaving the game in your hands. Yes there is a story line that is pretty devoid of choices. And knowing, from playing 1, that this was gonna end badly it still got to me. I honestly didn't think I'd like Arthur as much as I do now.
just got to the epilogue yesterday for the first time. I agree with you about leaving players with their thoughts. I have had so much fun just wandering in this game.
He was just stating that no matter what "values" the developers decide to double, it introduces huge change into the system which would be immediately obvious to the player
I think it is relatively apt. distance between points of interest isn't measured in distance, but in time. Likewise, the measurement of weapon damage in height makes no sense. You measure it in time. In this regard, it effects gameplay loop in the same way. TTK and TTPOI are both trackable balancing points that you work into the fundamental design of your game. Gunplay and movement play are inextricably linked. The distance between two towns is as important to that as how many points of cover there are between two sniper nests.
I actually enjoyed that to an extent it was like playing a new game to me however they should've lengthened it with all the time and money that was already put in the game.
Jose Santos same just wish it was longer it would be nice to get a couple extra missions in after killing micah or some element where i could gain money and trick out my farm would've been fire
This was really well done. Also, the thing in the ledger you can buy that allows fast travel is the only thing I didn't buy in the ledger because going from place to place on my horse was much more immersive and made me feel a part of the game. *DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS GAME*. It's not just a game, it was made completely different than other games and let me tell you it never seizes to amaze. One thing I also realised is that the game used a lot of techniques used in film such as depth of field, and making the camera move more dramatically when in combat to add suspense. And also, the motion capture and voice acting is incredible. Another thing I love is how they made the characters. They aren't just characters, they each have their own traits and All have their own way of speaking which adds to the realistic factor once again.
"Like Michael J Fox breakdancing". Seriously, using the man's disease as part of a joke was the best you could have come up with? You need to step up your integrity game.
You hit the nail on the head. You talk about the fast travel option where you actually miss the travel, while in some cases the travel is the adventure. Ever seen Lord of the rings, it is about the journey. I remember an old game, Star Wars galaxies, and if I remember right, we had to wait up to 10 or 15 minutes for the shuttle if it just left. A lot of gamers would hate that, however I have the best memories from those moments. People socialize when they have nothing to do, offer things for sale or even just kill a friend of yours in which this shuttle wait could turn into a huge battle. But there are not many game studio's who would make games with this anymore, everybody needs instant gratifications now. Thats why I think there has never been a game as good as Star Wars galaxies. A lot came close, but never managed to really give me that vibe SWG did.
👔Fascinating work ...I think you should talk about "just cause " 3 & 4 ...Clearly the wing suite destroyed the open world meaning for the game, basically if there is unlimited use of the wingsuite then there is no need to run or driving veiacls...what i mean that this will make you feel like you have seen and tried everything and you will get bored fast which will ruin the open world experience... However there is an alternative solution for that which is to replace the wing suite with a "hang glider "with a limited usage, for example: you can find it on high places and mountins only for one usage.😉
Personally, I would argue that the wingsuit, grappling hook, and parachute made the open world traversal more fun. It was a unique way to move around the map. Yes, it made vehicles rather pointless, but I didn't complain much, as using the grappling hook to get around was awesome.
@@BananaBrainsZEF i agree with you it's more fun...also to understand what i mean ,try to play the game with a wingsuite for 1 hour and without for 1 hour...you will feel the deference.
When I first played rdr2 I had to force myself to slow down and enjoy the world, because I realized thats what it was about. After so many games where you can just rush through everything, it was nice to have something say, "Hey, its okay to slow down". It made the fast paced moments just that much more exciting.
8:58 "Lack of handholding" . Seriously ? The quests in this game are so linear and scripted you can't go 2 steps your way and not fail it. While they are masterpieces in terms of atmosphere, narrative and extraodinary details / quirks (e. g. mission when you get drunk in Valentine), there is a huge amount of handholding in RDR2. NakeyJakey said it well in his "Rockstar's Game Design is Outdated".
you can't really put Rockstar and 'Lack of handholding' in the same sentence. Their games are pretty much the most linear games out there which is weird because it's open world.
@@adumdumdum GTA 3 was very open world. Every game since then has tightened the reigns and forced more and more 'follow our narrative to the letter!' strictures into it. And I agree. There were some legitimately frustrating areas where I'd hve to jump through hoops to find the way I was supposed to do it to please Rockstar, since I was accidentally breaking the mission OVER AND OVER.
I’ve put over 200 hours into this game and am on epilogue 2 and have never fast travelled. I enjoy riding the horse even if there’s nothing to do on the way but there’s usually something to do or explore. Even without anything to do the game is just stunning to look at and I love just hunting or picking herbs on my way to places, so there’s always something for me to do.
I'm sorry, but this series is getting wrung out. It's the same incredibly clickbaity thumbnail over and over, and oftentimes it feels like individual ideas tied to certain games or theses that could flourish into interesting video essays are bogged down by the fact that these videos are all a series. I don't mean to say that they are all *terrible*. These videos often do bring up very striking ideas, and draw appreciation to portions of games that have revolutionized, or improved upon, certain mechanics within games. I appreciate that, and as a disclaimer, I am a fucking JUNKIE for Red Dead 1 and 2. At the same time, the fact that those types of videos are all restrained by their dedication to a core theme of "Just...Wow" can make them simultaneously samey and disjointed. I say samey about them all, meaning that most of these videos end up being the same length and sound structurally similar. I say disjointed because these videos frequently go off the rails a bit much or are structurally all over the place, a la this video. This video seemed like it was 30% about Red Dead, and 70% about other titles and the way THEY worked on open world exploration. Hell, Odyssey had more screen time than Red Dead did in this video. Long story short, I don't mean to trash these videos or Luke's channel. He makes good content. I just wanted to offer some respective criticism. I'd love to have my comment criticized and discuss with you guys what you think about this series.
Infant Motorist Yeah I agree a lot of his recent videos have felt the same and a little lazy. It almost reminds me of Downward Thrust or Cleanprincegaming. His videos are still decent but it seems like they aren’t as concentrated as his older videos
N7pirate: Cleanpricegaming and Downward Thrust are perfect examples. Their content is lazy and shoehorned, and I really don’t want to see Luke’s content turn into that. I don’t want him swept away by trying to appeal to what’s popular, or uploading a video just for the sake of uploading.
I think the video was pretty coherent and every part of it worked towards making a point. But I do have a problem with the thumbnails and titles. If I didn't know the content was good, I would have never watched this video, because it sounds cheap ("just...wow" really triggers me, similar to "I can't even"). I think Luke should overthink his approach to titles and thumbnails (the picture and font is great, actually, so here I'm only talking about the title, too) if he wants to attract more people who can appreciate his content.
Aeturnus I agree. I understand how he used other points from other games to tie into the idea that Red Dead 2’s open world is more deliberate than others, but in doing so I feel like it spends more time exploring why those games took a misstep rather than really expanding on how Red Dead 2 took the RIGHT step. That’s why I felt like putting this video in this series detracted from what could have been a more fleshed-out video exploring open world design in the context of Red Dead 2. The video isn’t necessarily all over the place, but I feel like with how much time he spent on other games, the title didn’t land as impact-fully as it could have.
Great comment. Totally agreed with the thumbnails and titles. It's also a shame that he's so focused on the '___ did something incredible' format since 1. It's not inherently beneficial to the video, 2. It forces Luke to frame the video in a certain way and 3. He can do so much better with how smart he is. I think that going to a more video-by-video basis with a wider disregard for catchy formats - a la Skill Up - would be much cooler.
Rockstar Games is Underrated who fan boys over a video game. A good game is a good game horizon lacks some of the detail of those games but is amazing regardless.
You can get the horse to auto-navigate for long stretches. Set a waypoint on where you want to go, get started, go into the cinematic view and voila, horse navigates the road and follows the path. You still have to hold X, and interact if there's an issue with enemies, but they won't run off a cliff or into a tree unless you completely stopped paying attention.
You can place a waypoint and hold cinematic mode while the horse is running on the road. The horse will automatically follow the waypoint without controlling it. The only thing you will be in control of are the speed and camera angle. Plus while doing this allows you to encounter strangers along the road.
The Michael J Fox break dancing joke was not very funny. Laughing at a video game horse writhing on the ground is one thing, but trying to enhance your intended humor by making comparisons to people with a disability is a really bad idea.
Does anyone here know how to disable notifications on a specific post? I'm sick of being alerted everytime someone feels the need to comment on my comment.
You know you did good as a developer when I actually care abput the side characters, villians, protagonists, etc. I loved this game, great job rockstar, and keep doing what your doing luke!
Luke Stephens hello
Lol how he said “I am not creative and I rely on you” great stuff. 😂😂
Sold my ps3 after finishing the last of us wish id kept it and just bought an xbox as a extra now.
I know many people that thought it was very boring outside of the story line, smh.
my thoughts exactly.. a little too samesy
When arthur thanked his horse, that was a pivotal moment for me.
my god i almost just started crying again just from reading this
I just finished yesterday, that touched my heart.
I had the civil war veterans horse, Buell. When Buell died I was so sad
Matthew Shelton me too I think anyone who had buell felt more sad during that scene because of the meaning behind that horse
Me too when Horse#1 died, I cried.
I want more story content. Online is so boring honestly.
Yeah, the lack of a talking protagonist and true world interaction make it feel less like a lived in world to me
RŮDE Yeah. Gta online makes way more sense than RDR online really.
@@wesleywinklaar true.
Give us the zombie dlc, haha. Or please please please the ability to build our own cabin wherever.
The exploration in Red Dead 2 was a wet dream of mine. I love just riding through the countryside, picking plants, talking to travelers. Rockstar managed to make every part of gameplay (most, anyway) feel fun.
The random travellers were amazing. You sit by their camp and they tell you stories or have a philosophic discussion.
Thats like the most boring shit in the world it might be fun to actually ride threw the country but in red dead boring af

Mass effect did, the original triology I mean
lol go play The Witcher 3. Makes red dead look like a child’s story. Red dead story so shallow and stupid.

Cinematic view, if you have a waypoint set or are following a companion, works also.
Ok dutch
This is my favorite game of all time and nothing else compares imo
It is incredible but The Witcher 3 and Zelda Breath of the wild are its equals for me
Lol witcher 3, god of war, even spiderman is more fun than this overrated piece of trash.

BTW its all just video games we are talking about here... so of course one can compare them.
Dude it's bigger than most games out right now.

I love videos like this. Super intellectual, polished, and teaches the viewer something new.
This is genuinely the best video I've seen on RDR2.
Awesome video!! I love this game so much and I understand exactly what you're saying when you feel the emotion of the character you're playing. Video games used to say "GET AWAY from YOURSELF and BE this character" now they're starting to say "FIND YOUR character and BE THAT character".

This game was so far ahead of anything that came out in 2018
xDD In what?

GOW was amazing, but it shouldn’t have beaten rdr2 for goty
The 1992 Dream Team ehhh I duno... that game was amazing. Don’t get me wrong: RDR was my personal favorite but I was blown away by God Of War as well and I must say I think the story was executed slightly better than RDR2. I’ll probably get crucified for saying this but Red Dead’s story was actually it’s weakest part imo. Still a great story especially compared with most AAA games these days but it felt pretty predictable and stagnant at times.
Considering it was a prequel it shouldn't be a surprise that it was predictable.
God of war is fun throughout, something you cant say same about when it comes to rdr2.
“RockStar really did something incredible”
Yes,they did.

I hope you get millions of subscribers luke. You truly deserve it.

I hate PlayStation lol I’m pure Xbox and PC
But RDR2 got game of the year?
i remember one of the things i loved about FFXV was the silence in the car at times. just riding with your buddies, listening to music, taking in the scenery. it felt genuine. so much bonding happened with the characters with so little exposition (especially for a FF game) and it created a wonderful gameplay experience. the traveling was part of the fun, near the end maybe it got a little repetitive, but never enough to make me fast travel. it wasn't a burden like having to clear out a factory you had been 4 times before for some NPC in Fallout 4, instead it was central to the game. it's the same for RDR2, when you are talking with another character the dialogue feels authentic, it feels like real people are talking and not just characters in a story. and when you're not talking the silence of just riding with them, or when you're by yourself and the sounds of the world around you are only punctuated by praising your horse or an occasional "howdy mister!" to a passerby, pulled me deeper into the world. i love riding across the world, it's a pleasure rather than a chore to just get from point a to point b. the story is such an important part of a game, but so much of what we fall in love with and remember, at least for me, are the worlds, and the characters, the emotions that they evoke stand out to me just as much as any plot twist or amazing set piece moment. letting the world breathe and just be, and allowing the player to live and explore in that makes for a better gameplay experience, and you're right, RDR2 nailed it.

If the landscape graphics didn't look so good and carry the game it would be a 7/10
NGL I was literally gonna say you should do Arkham City LOL
I did not play as Arthur Morgan… I was Arthur Morgan
Kinda was hoping this was a video about an update for RDO lmao... :( tbh, I legit took my saddle on a 14 minute journey through a thunderstorm, got bit by a damn muskrat... lol
Thomas Wehrmann RDO is dead though, all the hype for RDR2 is around a new DLC.
oh the *chills* during the last 30 seconds or so, damn.... Well done, mate, well done
I'm hoping rockstar adds the ability to wear a pocket watch on Arthur's/ John's vest.
Yeah. Sucks that legend of the east vest is the only vest that has that thing
The lack of fast travel also reminds you of past events
I often found myself traveling and them remembering “I caught my dinner here once” or “that’s the river that damn bounty made me follow”
Not joking now, the moment i finished rdr2 i stopped playing games... I honestly dont enjoy any other story game anymore, no mobas, no battle royals, nothing lmao
Guess it was too good
Play Witcher 3. Your jaw Will drop to the ground
Liked and Subbed.
I’m very happy this was recommended to me.
Keep up the great work! < 3
Same here pal.
Really enjoyed the video. You have a pleasant voice to listen to and you didnt pad the video with unnecessary trivial info. Youve earned yourself another sub!
Here is a game to test.
The Simpsons Hit & Run
What a refreshing video about my favourite game of all time. I played the original Red Dead on the PS3 and I loved it then. Red Dead Redemption has exceeded my expectations the emotions this game has evoked are amazing.... Full credit to Rockstar because I have never played a game that has reduced me to tears as this one did. My emotions were all over the place throughout but the ending broke my heart... The interaction with the characters within the gameplay dictates how it will end... Amazing game. I am looking forward to your upcoming review of the game. 👍
Test Dragon Age Inquisition. I know it's older but I'm curious. I did enjoy the game but occassionally I lost the desire to pursue side quests.
Lost me after 3 minutes of waffling
The science you use for your conclusions is impressive...subbed
I used the stage coach maybe 3 times throughout my 80+ hours I have played the game so far. I never thought why only showing the names of the towns while selecting a fast travel point. Now I realize it made me remember the names of them and correlate them to certain details to remember them by so I know the name by just being in the town. If they did that on purpose with the stagecoach fast travel that was smart on them.
Honestly one of the best games I’ve ever played love RDR2 and excited for future singleplayer content for this game.
Great game all round except for all the immature griefing muppets in online let's hope the update on the 26th helps to stop these diaper wearing fortnite rejects
Can I just say... This video is amazing.... I never even considered half of these points
Is it just me or does Asassians creed odyssey look really just utter garbage
Imo every AC game since AC3 is just uninspired trash. They clearly kept doing them because of money reasons, the actual story makes no more sense at all anymore, it's really sad.
Good thing i stopped at ACIII...didn’t even finish it if i remember right. I might pick up odyssey in the future and thats only because i’m from greece.
Especially if you play it right after beating RDR2. That's what happened to me, and boy did it disappoint. The horses alone in AC:O were just so bad it makes you wanna scream in agony and feel genuine sorrow as you inevitably start comparing the two. Everything about AC:O is just light years behind RDR2.
i personally don’t think ac unity got the praise it deserved, it’s pretty good now with almost no signs of the bugs that ruined the game upon release
Black Flag was awesome, so was origins. And I would play AC odyssey over RDR2 any day of the week. The gameplay in AC odyssey is so much fun.
one friend introduced me to Red Dead Redemption on PS3, and from playing that game, I started to like exploration in open world games... rdr2 makes it 1000 times better.
Comparing distance between point of interest (POI) and weapon damage doesn't work.
I have to agree with this, Luke, this parallel just isn't a fair juxtaposition
100k bro. Congrats. My guy
I love this game. The only thing I would change is the epilogue. I hated building fences and Abigail nagging me.
I actually enjoyed that to an extent it was like playing a new game to me however they should've lengthened it with all the time and money that was already put in the game.
marcus edwards I felt it just fan service for rdr1 player I personally enjoyed it
Jose Santos same just wish it was longer it would be nice to get a couple extra missions in after killing micah or some element where i could gain money and trick out my farm would've been fire
I found that rather distasteful as well.
True, but I suppose the game was built around the use of the wingsuit, similar to how Spider-Man PS4 was designed with the web slinging.
Same problem with Saints Row 4, the vehicles are pointless when you get the powers to fly around the city
@@lucaseamaral 👏
Michall1212 sad but totally true. I wish rock star would ease up on the reigns
you can't really put Rockstar and 'Lack of handholding' in the same sentence.
He was talking about the traveling part...
Congratulations on 100k subs!!
Horizon zero DAWN please
Thegood shôt really wish I could play that but got so motion sick while playing I just couldn't.
Nabil André Belkhir sorry to hear that it’s an incredible game!
Overrated. It's good, not great or masterpiece. It's fact, don't attack like a butthurt fanboy. It's not of the level of rdr 2, Witcher 3 or Botw.
Ya horizon zero dawn is better.
'Luke Stephens' does Something Incredible.
Playing Red dead redemption 2 with Ennio Morricone music is Heaven.
