Clay is the most explosively talented surfer I've ever seen .......just a raw talent that can't be bound by rules and buzzers . No way if I was his sponsor would I want him to compete in contest ! He's too good to be restricted !
Thanks for making this vid. My son has high functioning autism also.. It great to see the possibilities for him in spite of some of the other challenges he faces
Biggest takeaway is that he shows how much the board is an extension of the body which is itself an extension of the mind. The board is merely a platform for what he wants to do and where he wants to be. And he can throw the board away, but he's always in the right position. If he lost the board, I know he'd be trying to complete the wave without it. He doesn't surf the board, he surfs the wave, but he chooses to surf the wave standing on the board (until he does the mad stuff). I think he has a focus and desire to surf the wave that is so pure that nothing will end his ride other than the ocean overpowering him. There's no fear of getting it wrong. It's pure wave riding.
He seems to be able to maneuver, react, remember, align, feel and everything else while in the flow state surfing in the most dangerous conditions. In Yoga, there are distinctions of the highest state of consciousness, then turned into 'States' of Consciousness. When a person mediates and breaks thru to a peak experience, that is only the first level. The succeeding levels relate to carrying that experience into waking consciousness. If I apply the Yogic states to this Clay Marzo's surfing, he appears to have broken into the highest flow states. Most of us feel 'mind blown' say when a beginning catches their first long wave or an Intermediate gets under their first tube. I was speechless in those peak moments unable to speak, unable to do anything else. I had a tube ride for 3 seconds once and then just surfed out to the shoulder when the wall of this wave was set for another 100 yards of carving. He on the other hand is able put all pieces together and be self aware in his flow state, think, feel, react and create. All sorts of athletic feats that we have seen Professionals achieve in all sorts of sports are on display here on what seems like an ordinary day for Marzo... breathtaking.
Clay is neurodivergent (ASD, Asperger's, whatever you want to call it), obsessed with surfing and probably has atypical flexibility. Add to this his Maui upbringing where he can frequently get in reps on high quality waves and you have a recipe for freakish talent. Even Kelly Slater tips his hat to Clay's ability to read water. The takeaways from Clay are: •Study - the ocean, surfing, your inner world •Have a vision - many elite surfers envision themselves on waves, including Clay •Commit - dude commits to his waves/maneuvers •Make it meaningful - he clearly cares about his experience of surfing
The takeaway is there is no takeaway. Sometimes you just have to appreciate raw talent and understand you won't understand how he does it. Pretty sure he doesn't even consciously do that, he just makes it happen 💯🤙🏻 8:50 haha
I got a quick UA-cam notification on my iPhone which I quickly glanced at… I thought it read… “Clay left OMBE, coaches speechless”. I had to double check it… because I thought Clay Nienaber had left OMBE 😱
I think youre correct... thats Clay in West Oz video. And yeah I find that hilarious and just adds to Clay Marzo mystique about the wetsuit or lack thereof
Clay has ASD, bound to have an effect on his surfing. “Not only do people with ASD have an increased capacity for extended focus, but also tend to have an ability to hyperfocus on areas of interest [4]. This concentration can be so intense that an individual loses track of time, other chores, or the surrounding environment.”
I think the ASD is part of it. Marzo has said that being in the water is the only place he feels relaxed and natural. For me, I think that's probably a lot to do with it. I bet it's almost impossible to get him to leave the water. He has a singular focus matched with raw talent.
Can you do a Coaches Eye of Caity Simmers please? There is a great video of her surfing in australia...all the commentary of her competing compares her to Dane Reynolds.
RE: what your biggest take away - foot positioning. Clay and Ant, would be great if you can expand on this in another video. Like what turns require weight on the front foot v what turns are back foot heavy. Cheers guys
BOARD CONTROL, the guy is ONE with the board. It seems like looking at the Exorcist movie lol but he moves his feet all over the board and it seems as he is in absolute control of the board with his feet, the he works WITH the wave and uses its energy and water properties to give balance and support to the upper part of his body while in contact with the surface of the water 💧 So for me, board control and in tuned with the wave's flow, rythm and energy. All working harmoniously, "...be like water my friend, be like water..." B.L.
Great to see see you guys getting out of the Oreo and Coffee Cup speech, which is great (no criticism here).😘 Biggest Takeaway from Marzo, he's unique, a f*** unicorn. Just enjoy his videos and try to be yourself in the water as well.
He or his board is possest or both. Western Australia is where he is on his own that's where I first saw him on video.Still don't know how that is real.
It's called a Clayback
My Clay back is a stay back.

Thats deep Tom. My wisdom is only teaspoon deep. Clay Marzo is next level.

Lol!
Aloha & thank you so much for making this episode about Clay, He really appreciates it 🙏🤙🏽
Clay's a phenom! He's got once in our lifetime talent that we'll never see again. Don't try to dissect how he does it, you'll go crazy.
I believe that left is in Westen Australia, Clay did'nt want to wear a wet suit.
Yup, he will go without a wetsuit as long as possible. He did it in Portugal as well
Wim Hoff method laybacks
I think youre correct... thats Clay in West Oz video. And yeah I find that hilarious and just adds to Clay Marzo mystique about the wetsuit or lack thereof
Clayton is a legend! Ant you big frother...let Clay finish his sentences! haha Great stuff guys, thanks!!

Turned his ASD into a super power.
takaway: zooming on the time when he moved his back foot toe side. MOre of that please!
They said his surfing in Hawaii though it's actually western Australia and the craziest part is his in board shorts! That's hardcore right there
Can you do a Coaches Eye of Caity Simmers please? There is a great video of her surfing in australia...all the commentary of her competing compares her to Dane Reynolds.
Best Surfer finally sponsored again😊
Fastforward 30 + years you mean. Tom's was 1990. Time flies.
his chest lit up like iron man on the last wave. Dudes a Super Hero!!!
RE: what your biggest take away - foot positioning. Clay and Ant, would be great if you can expand on this in another video. Like what turns require weight on the front foot v what turns are back foot heavy. Cheers guys
Take away: Clay Marzo = Pure, Raw Talent.
That was west oz. Not Hawaii

Become the tea cup.
He is part of the selected group called phenomenal or the GOATS
That was west oZ
Biggest take away is no one here will surf anywhere close to clay marzo’s skill level lol.
1. Clay Marzo has spent time standing at a crossroads.
2.Never say die.
Great to see see you guys getting out of the Oreo and Coffee Cup speech, which is great (no criticism here).😘 Biggest Takeaway from Marzo, he's unique, a f*** unicorn. Just enjoy his videos and try to be yourself in the water as well.
We are on coffee break.
That god exhists ' in clay !
.. My back and hamstring just hurts watching this..
Detto
This guy proves that gravity force is relative in surfing 🤣😍
The top 5 are glad he doesn’t chase a title.
So true
Clayback - Clay Marzo + Layback
Clay Marzo calls it the "Clay-back"
That’s why I ride a softboard. Less painful 🤣
Watch his interviews. He's as different as his surfing is.
howzit bru
PS that’s all Australia. Ha ha ha.
I think a helicopter was flying overhead and he has strings attached, he's a human puppet.
