My mom begged for me to be put on Prozac. I was 9, I cringe every time I hear the name. I knew I was being over medicated, but she really thought she was helping. Prozac made me crazy. Turns out I had undiagnosed autism and adhd…but since I’m a female, any problems immediately had an antidepressant thrown at them. I’m finally correctly diagnosed and on a good med regimen that does not include any ssri.
How did it happen, my psychologist prescribed me this but I’m too scared to take it to treat my anxiety and severe depression. Mostly because of what people say about it giving suicidal thoughts and having dependence on it.
Takuma Mcdade I had 30 side effects and a lot of them were severe, had to go to urgent care and the emergency room, took it back in May 25th, took 2 weeks to get better but on the 13th of this month I had a panic attack where I lost control of my body while standing and fell to the ground, it was pretty bad. Never gonna take another one of these kinds of drugs again. All I took was 10mg.
Prozac is a lesson to educate yourself on medications and know your options. Because I educated myself on bipolar medications, I was able to have an honest discussion with a leg up and be able to be medicated how I wanted and needed to be. If you need these kinds of meds, get a doctor specializing in medication management. They’re so much more helpful when it comes to this kind of thing.
@@cecymadrigal4531 yeah, it takes a few weeks to work, bear in mind you start on a low dosage and it can always be increased by a psychiatrist if necessary

i was on prozac for about 2 1/2 years. It kinda helped my depression but sparked one of the most destructive manic episodes i’ve ever experienced. I know many who are on prozac and are very happy. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people.
It looks like the majority of you, have had positive outcomes with this drug. That makes me hopeful. Literally just got prescribed this today for my crippling anxiety & took my first dose today. I've been on Zoloft & Cymbalta, as well as Wellbutrin for a little bit. They all worked, but after a while, the changes in my mood were to severe & I wanted to stop. Just felt like a zombie... Zero emotion. Just apathetic towards everything. Was not a pleasant. Not really sure what to expect with this, but hopefully it does me good.
ive been on several different antidepressants since i was 13 but never prozac. ive been on lexapro for a year and a half and its the best one by far. the only one that actually did anything
I'm one of the people that had SEVERE ADVERSE reactions to prozac. Within a half hour of taking the pill, I had a HORRIFIC episode of my brain going crazy and instantly trying to kill me (I had to fight my own body from clawing myself and trying to kill myself to end the madness). The horror of that episode can't be adequately put into words, and sadly I've had this same adverse reaction to three other drugs, which has left me with PTSD. Prozac made my life a billion times worse. When I told my psychiatrist that this drug made me want to kill myself, that I had to fight my body from running to the kitchen and grabbing a butcher knife, his response was something along the lines of, "well I think you need to let this be in your system for it to work", and he actually tried to tell me to stay on the drug. The fact that I told him that this drug INSTANTLY made me have to fight my own body from stabbing myself with a butcher knife, and that he said I should "try to stay on it", has left me DUMBFOUNDED, and this was the first major wakeup call of learning when to tell doctors no.
Watching this because am about to take this medicine. I have depression for 2yrs and I lost alot of weight..n alway sad and alone ....watching this n reading comments make me smile but little nervous
I lost count how many friends have been on life long head meds since Prozac was introduced. I firmly believe the late 80s thru the 90s was the dark age of psychiatry where instead of treatment, there were drugs. Instead of diagnoses, there was guesswork.. and more drugs. All of a sudden, every young boy was attention deficient, hyperactive, depressed, or simply too angry. Now, years later, most friends, men since boyhood and women since early adulthood, are still on a cocktail of head meds, convinced they need them to survive. There is a reason the world is in the shape it's in.
A lot of them need medicine to survive in the real world ADHD for example if it’s very severe which is what I have I would be living off my family because there’s only so long we can focus before our brain just stops same with depression
Honestly, I still have a grudge against my child psychologist to not put me on SSRI. I first got them prescribed when I was 24 or so. In France. In FRANCE where docs don't debate for years and sometimes just do. I have had psychotherapy since I was 6 and it helped okayish. Only on SSRI I could finally put unlogical anxieties away and only in combo with Vyvanse (ADHD diagnosis took until I was 29) I don't have racing thoughts. Some shit you can only solve with biochemistry and as a scientist I prefer to experiment with drugs than exposing my vulnerabilities to a psychologist I did not trust who made things lot worse. There is no point in trying to go out if you are only left with your thoughts. There is no point in trying to meditate when this "unconditional acceptance" feels like giving up and staying in a shit situation. There is no point in doing all this crap that is advertised against depression, anxiety etc if you have untreated ADHD and every method to try just makes you feel like a failure because you blame yourself for not functioning and not doing enough. Whatever you do, it is never enough. And THIS is what some people need these crappy drugs for. I didn't like trading in my sexuality but I did it willingly over and over again because I'd rather have no libido and sex life at all than being crippled by anxiety each and every damn day that just makes me wanna kill myself. I have seen severe cases of depression and anxiety in the clinic and if these cases are left untreated by science then we didn't try hard enough as researchers and have failed as humans. Humans are partly biochemical machines and we know so much about chemistry and have tons of computational power. Every life lost to suicide due to depression, every case that could be treated by ketamine and didn't get sufficient treatment because ketamine is schedule 3, outlawed in the 70s etc, each of these cases is a failure for the scientific community and humanity as a whole! There are few illnesses as crappy as mental illnesses and they all deserve to be treated. I never want to hear again I should just try harder, not think about X, think about it less when there are case studies where a woman who never dared to go to the supermaket got treated with an opioid, went out the first time in 20 years and when they took the opioid away she was like before. Case studies like that are the reason why I will never blame anyone for failing at X. Why I will never tell someone - just try harder, push yourself harder, you are too lazy and all the other crap.
I was put on it after my son's death. It stopped the pain. It stopped everything I watched a puppy hit by a car and walked right on. No thank you. A painless life is a joyless life.
Prozac gave me crippling gastric reflux which resulted in several trips to the emergency department before I had to self diagnose the cause. After stopping it my GERD completely resolved.
Prozac probably saved my life when I started on it in 1992. However ,like everything there is a price to pay- mostly in the bedroom department ! Also these drugs should not be called anti depressants they should be more accurately known as mood stabilisers. OK you no longer get the suicidal lows but neither do you get any of lifes highs. There is an element of zombyization. I took it for about 25 years and changed to sertraline. I found that more easily tolerated. But for certain people , make no mistake- these drugs are LIFE SAVERS
I took Prozac back in the 2000’s and it made me go nuts. I was obsessed with death and developed an eating disorder that all went away after I stopped taking it.
Keith Wilson Surrender to animals? Why? Do other animals surrender to each other? Where did you get this stupid idea? What makes us different from animals? We’re better at a lot of things that evolution has deemed dominant over the rest of animal kind, but we aren’t inherently different.
I was on lexapro in college and my mom was like “no sweetie get on Prozac our family is a Prozac family 😌😤” bc it’s the only thing that worked for literally my moms entire side of the family LMAO
Since women carry life and have a unique bond with the children they carry, they are more likely to suffer greatly when their children leave home. "Empty nest syndrome" is the reason depression in woman is so prevalent, and why women are so often the target audience. Mothers belong with their children. The bond between mother and child, that's the bond that defines family. When it's broken, we become broken.
José de Jesus men still suffer from depression way worse than women with more men committing suicide because of it and a lot of men don’t talk about it to the extent that women do we just bottle it up until we can’t anymore or we die in one way or another
Kindness Kindness and plus men kill themselves more because most men can’t just throw themselves in a happy scenario like partying or hanging with friends because men on average work way more than women do so men can’t just have fun unless they can have the time and for me I wouldn’t I’d just drink my sorrows away
Prozac kills my emotions. I need my emotions for some things. There’s something evil about it. Operating without emotion can cause your brain to make you into something you’re not. Gotta be careful with it.
I just started and I don't know how I feel about it. I feel less anxious and things generally feel... fine. Like just fine. Not I no longer feel defeated or when I do have these thoughts, it kinda just stops. But that's also the same with all other emotions. When I want to cry, its so hard to and that just feels uncomfortable.
@@msdothedash Yes, it's my first time taking it. It's been pretty mixed In that first week - I couldn't cry when I wanted to. But I got used to it, as in I no longer even have that urge to cry for no reason anymore. I can still cry in super emotional instances. There were also some days that I truly felt happy and good about myself, but that was short lived. Most days now, I'm very unmotivated, still overall sad, want to sleep a lot and feel lost. These emotions are more toned down though, so I don't get overwhelmed. It hasn't been 6 weeks yet so I'll wait and see if it gets better.

An ex-girlfriend and me had both tried Prozac separately. We agreed that Prozac wipes out all of your emotional connection to your innermost moral values. If you're on Prozac, and you see someone nearby get hurt, you will not even care that happened to them. We both objectively knew we couldn't live without the emotional drive which let's you know right from wrong. So we each got off of it. I suppose other folks have a different experience with Prozac, and if so I need you to stay away from me. You're not going to convince me to take drugs ever again.
Prozac was terrible. Took away everything I felt. Had no appetite. And felt more depressed and suicidal. Told my doctor I may be bipolar. She said it would make it worse but gave it to me to try it out. Well it made everything worse.
I loved being on Lexapro but unfortunately the itching side effects were way too severe for me. I already have eczema and i just couldn't handle that side effect. Now my doctor has prescribed Prozac and I'm terrified to take it. I've heard so many negative things about it like suicide attempts etc. I discussed this with my doctor and begged for Citalopram. She insisted i try this. Should i try it?

In 1947, a couple of prozacs flew to Earth in a silver saucer-shaped craft. After closely observing mankind, they shit themselves laughing and crashed into the desert in Roswell, New Mexico. The US Army found the shit covered craft, conducted an investigation, deduced what happened and out of embarressment told the public it was a weather balloon.
I have been taking Prozac and Tenex meds since I was child maybe i will said 4 grades until few months I start again using, I have been depressing, panic, heart attack. angry, and not feel hungry...
It just kept hitting the covers of magazines. It was the poster child of antidepressants and treated as if it was the first or only effective antidepressant on the market. Doctors are susceptible to medical fads, and prescribed it because everyone else was prescribing it (though if you confront them with that, they are indignant and can't believe you would say anything so inaccurate and insulting). It was WIDELY known to disable sexual response, but patients were told "it only affects .03% of patients" and to just be happy they were feeling better and not be so greedy. You can learn to live without sexual pleasure and partner intimacy, can't you? It's a small price to pay. Then it came out that sexual dysfunction had only been "studied" for 3 weeks and that the rate of sexual disability was more than 30%.
Prozac is a very nice drug for chemical castration and should be used as first line medication for sex offenders who need to get chemical castration. Kills libido efficiently with 80% probability. But yes, it is a powerful antidepressant as well.
Prozac was only famous for being the first SSI anti depressant. Also if people have said it’s actually not very effective and caused worse symptoms many people I know on it said it’s the worst anti depressants and myself felt worse on it. A lot of users have said negative things about it. It was simply over hyped.
It's nothing to do with the actual help, it's to do with the advertising. This is what's wrong with America. In the UK, we take drugs because they work and fix problems. In the US people are told this and that will fix problems you've had
It's such a mixed bag for me because it helps my anxiety and panic attacks but I completely takes away my "happy feeling" and my sex drive is almost GONE so I'm on the fence but I think I want to get off of it since I'm only 20
I've been taking prozac for months now, have not seen much improvement in my depression, however I experienced the side effects quite drastically in the first month. But since then I don't believe I am feeling any effect from the drug. probably will seek new meds at some point
I always wondered what happened to Prozac. After all the hoopla, it just dropped out of sight. If it worked so miraculously, why was depression continuing to skyrocket? I was also skeptical about how it was supposed to "transform" people, which of course it didn't. It was only one drug of many, but for some reason the media began to put it on magazine covers.
It is still on the market. I wouldn't consider it first choice for depression due to the sexual side effects. Other ADs work quite well as well. There seems to be a distinction between serotonergic (low mood, anxiety) and dopaminergic (can't get out of bed, can't do anything) depression. But SSRI are amazing for anxiety disorder and OCD.
🙏❤ "Sadness is from happenstance; whatever happened or did not happen for you, grief. Depression is the body saying F-- you, I don't want to be this character anymore. I don't want to hold up this avatar that you've created in the world. It's too much for me. Deep rest. Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you've been trying to play... My father just lighting up the room or wrapping everyone in a story and going, oh, that's the thing I want to do.. My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. He got a safe job. When I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. And we had do everything we could to survive.. I saw his love and humor and how it altered the world around me, and I thought - that's something to do, that's something worth my time.. Now fear is going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much. You can spend your life imagining ghosts. And the decisions we make in this moment, are based in either love or fear." -Jim Carrey

Fluoxetine completely took away my appetite while I was taking it, and it was part of the long line of psychiatric meds that left me with tardive dyskinesia.
Well that's why you don't take these SSRIs for long periods of time. Do you still have TD after weening of the ADs? Also I heard there are medications to deal with TD in the states now
Vitas Zukowski
I’m sorry. TD doesn’t have to be permanent. It may fade with time.
It actually made me gain weight which was a good thing because I wasn't eating as a result of OCD, the issue is that I gained a little too much weight lol
@@dicksdrugsanddebutantes9305 It make me hungry 24/7
I got tremor. I’m taking less now and my tremor has gone away.
It works for me ! No side effects ...not for everybody like any other medication
My mom begged for me to be put on Prozac. I was 9, I cringe every time I hear the name. I knew I was being over medicated, but she really thought she was helping. It sucked, it made me tired, and that made her convinced that I was depressed, and then I’d reach a breaking point, lash out, and she’d think that was progress to a healthier life. I hated every minute.
Dang I'm sorry
OMG who on earth puts a 9 year old on antidepressants! That is heartbreaking within itself.. did your mom ever just talk to u? Hold u🥺? Comfort u? Read bedtime stories to u? Do activities with u to stimulate your mind?? Maybe just have u write down little notes to her if u didn’t feel comfortable speaking directly to her? Idk just anything but meds for a kid.. that hurts me so bad to think about that.. I hope you are feeling better now and I’m sorry that you were so sad as a child 🥺💔☹️

Prozac made me crazy. Turns out I had undiagnosed autism and adhd…but since I’m a female, any problems immediately had an antidepressant thrown at them. I’m finally correctly diagnosed and on a good med regimen that does not include any ssri.
Being female has nothing to do with it, ADHD doesn't exist

Nayla Saleh i took it for almost a year now, i’ve switched as of a week ago due to other conflictions but it greatly helped me
I almost killed myself on this drug. definitely not for everyone but it has helped people
How did it happen, my psychologist prescribed me this but I’m too scared to take it to treat my anxiety and severe depression.
Mostly because of what people say about it giving suicidal thoughts and having dependence on it.
Lol does it work?
Well yes, but actually no.
dgonz gonzales wym?
Top Dawg It’s unlikely for severe side effects however it can cause headaches and nausea
Man you know your depressed when the idea of taking this antidepressant is depressing to you

@@cecymadrigal4531 yeah, it takes a few weeks to work, bear in mind you start on a low dosage and it can always be increased by a psychiatrist if necessary
Cecy Madrigal how have the last few weeks been? I just started 2 days ago with a small dose and I have actually been a lot better. Curious to your experience?
i was on prozac for about 2 1/2 years. It kinda helped my depression but sparked one of the most destructive manic episodes i’ve ever experienced. I know many who are on prozac and are very happy. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people.
Made me very agitated
Did not know this drug was such a big deal on the market, but I am not suprised. It have truly saved me from a lot of suffering.

I was prescribed these for anxiety when I was 13. Gave me worse suicidal thoughts and I tried to od..
13? That's shocking I hope you are ok now hun?.
Same here. Hey, we made it though
Cymbalta is hell.
I hated Cymbalta
Cymbalta and Wellbutrin were terrible to me. I felt hollow and empty like I was just ghosting through life will no real personality.
How are you today?
ive been on several different antidepressants since i was 13 but never prozac. ive been on lexapro for a year and a half and its the best one by far. the only one that actually did anything
Prozac saved my life
I'm one of the people that had SEVERE ADVERSE reactions to prozac.
Prozac made me almost kill myself, i suffered from many side effects
Same. I got so anxious and nauseous. Got brain zaps. Couldn’t leave the house for like 2 months.
I found my psychosis sort of gets rough on it
Same surprisingly a lot of people I know who been on it and myself know it’s very bad and had worsen the symptoms.

Not all medicines work the same! I experienced many side effects with Zoloft and Wellbutrin. I feel normal on prozac.
Facts
The dark age of psychiatry ended with thorazine and prozac. Previously ECT, cold water dunks, and transorbital lobotomies were the norm.
Prozac definitely didn't help me, personally. I was more depressed and became more suicidal.
Should have tryed to snort it it makes u so happy

@@JosedeJezeus What do you mean?
Prozac worked so well for me
I took Prozac back in the 2000’s and it made me go nuts. I was obsessed with death and developed an eating disorder that all went away after I stopped taking it.

Lexapro (Escitalopram) is even worse regarding the ability to kill your libido than Prozac (Fluoxetine).

They STILL single out women in these ads today!
José de Jesus men still suffer from depression way worse than women with more men committing suicide because of it and a lot of men don’t talk about it to the extent that women do we just bottle it up until we can’t anymore or we die in one way or another
Kindness Kindness I said they men suffer worse I’m fully aware that women have higher depression rates than man
Kindness Kindness and plus men kill themselves more because most men can’t just throw themselves in a happy scenario like partying or hanging with friends because men on average work way more than women do so men can’t just have fun unless they can have the time and for me I wouldn’t I’d just drink my sorrows away
I have bipolar 2 and prozac saved me when I started taking it 6 years ago.. I'm still taking 40mg daily x
Glad it helped a lot of people although my personal experience with it was quite traumatizing.
"traumatizing" 😅
Prozac kills my emotions. I need my emotions for some things. There’s something evil about it. Operating without emotion can cause your brain to make you into something you’re not. Gotta be careful with it.

I just started and I don't know how I feel about it. I feel less anxious and things generally feel... fine. Like just fine. Not I no longer feel defeated or when I do have these thoughts, it kinda just stops. But that's also the same with all other emotions. When I want to cry, its so hard to and that just feels uncomfortable.
Was it ur first time taking it ? cause this is my first time taking it
@@msdothedash Yes, it's my first time taking it.

Prozac still is the best SSRI on the market!
First year on it was great and that was back in 2016. I weaned off then when I took it again 5 months ago now I feel like it doesnt help the same. Still trying to figure out if I should be on it or not. I feel like I'm better on it but I'm not myself.
Instead of figuring out why everyone is getting depressed , they just invented another reason to be stressed prozac

@@allhandsondeck3308 Depression is the worst disease out there what you are saying is wrong and obviously she has no idea about the illness!
Prozac didn’t do much for me sadly
It was never as big in countries where direct advertising to consumer is not permitted
It's such a mixed bag for me because it helps my anxiety and panic attacks but I completely takes away my "happy feeling" and my sex drive is almost GONE so I'm on the fence but I think I want to get off of it since I'm only 20
