For technical issues - Gothic fans knows that installing DirectX11 fixes almost all problems in this game. Yeah I kinda feel you missed a lot and have kinda mixed experience without DX11 but overall its still pretty good game :D You should install DX11 and check for yourself how the game runs with it. You would be surprised.
As a Polish person - I was amazed by the voice acting. This is a completely free mod and the guys behind it managed to hire one of the most well-known and beloved Polish actors known for their work in Polish Theatre and/OR movies or TV series. Some of them were or actually are Polish movie stars and in general - are the kind of faces you see in the Polish TV. I am talking about Cezary Zak, Artur Barcis and Miroslaw Zbrojewicz. They are often used in movie dubbings as well. They did a stellar job overall when it comes to the voice acting
As a German person, the Polish part of the community not only kickstarted Gothic's popularity across eastern Europe, it very much inspired our German community to add their share as well, but no contribution so far was as awesome as a community taking the localisation into their own hands.👍
Do not be afraid to recommend games (or films for that matter) with "outdated graphics". Some of those older graphics are what I'm looking for in a game. I don't have a super-powerful computer and I love-love-love-LOVE the pixeled look for fantasy games. (Skald anyone?). Modern graphics games don't seem to have the devotion to story and replayability that the older graphics games do. So I'm all for the "outdated graphics".
I'm currently on a binge of older games, I'm enjoying the dated visuals. Adds charm and art styles were more important because photorealism wasn't anywhere near achievable.
I honestly I love how Gothic looks. Granted, this game came out when I was young and so it's not from before my time. But still. I think the Gothic games are a perfect example of games that straddle the line between having good enough graphics that it's capable of creating an incredible atmosphere and the vision of the devs not being limited, while also leaving enough room for your imagination.
Yeah, it really is one of the best. My first playthrough took me 130 hours. There's so much stuff to do, and the quality is really insane. It's probably the best fan-made game ever, and possibly better than G1/G2 even.
@@gigidasha4475 Very hard decision, but neither will disappoint. I think I enjoyed Enderal a lot more because of how unique it feels. It starts slow, but picks up nicely. The story twists and character development are much more impactful too.

Before the project split up from Dzieje Khorinis they were using original voice actors, but these ones sound very similar to the original once, also few of them are quite known actors/celebrities.
I don't speak polish but i played with polish soundover. I'm a ukrainian, our languages a quite similar, so i could understand like ~40% of words. The experience was AMAZING! In some way that very-alike-but-still-different soundover added a ton to the medieval fantasy atmosphere. Amazing voice acting, truly
I don't speak Polish, and my mother language is Dutch, which bears no real similarities to Polish. But I still enjoyed the voice acting. I even picked up a tiny bit of Polish I believe :) Not ALL of the voice actors nail their performance, but overall it was very enjoyable.
@@sobAKADUKA I have the same experience. The voice acting is amazing. Especially Marvin's voice, which sounds great at the beginning of the game, when he's still a little naive, and at the end, when he's experienced.
The best part about that beggar situation around 4:20 is that even though I've played the game and watched some clips of the game - this is the first time I'm seeing this event

Did you know there is a secret alternative ending? You have to play in a very specific way to get it. It makes the game feel quite different from a regular run and forces you to make the most out of limited resources, making it more difficult indirectly. Try it and see for yourself if you want to do another run. Also, I don't think that focusing on Polish voice acting was a mistake. Gothic is a German game, but extremely popular in Poland and the Polish Gothic community is among the most active ones. There are probably more Polish fans than those who speak English. The Russian community is also very active and made their own professional voice acting. I speak German and Russian and I played with Russian voice acting and German subtitles. It worked very well for me.
@@jpzadran4774 you have to play without doing any sidequests. Just rushing main story. So for example if you're going to the city you have to bribe the guard or go through the sewers because albyn's permission or going in with the merchant require doing sidequests
I've heard many people complaining about the story of Marvin being weak. I have my own view about it. Archolos is not just a story about Marvin. The main character is Archolos itself. Ruthless, unfair, grim and manipulative world. Throughout the story we get hints about how Archolos doesn't care about the lives of others. How the Guild and the Guard pursue their own goals, feeding you false promises of later help. The game teaches you the bitter truth about politics: those who are in power will use you to gain more power. We see some truly twisted decisions devoid of all empathy and common sense. Ramsay "solved" the Beast problem by turning the hunt into a show and a feast despite you being the only survivor. Denial of orc presence until the very end. Wolf Sons are another tragic example. Their home was taken by Myrtanians and in the end the rest of their population (and culture) are sent to the Valley of Mines. The Kingdom was slowly suffocating them in an unfriendly part of the island only to finish them off as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Both Volker and Ulryk joined forces but planned to set each other up in the end. In the end, the city got reaped what it had sawn: the prosperous and rich part was burned and butchered while the poor district and the harbor was spared the carnage. That is the true story of Archolos, viewed through the eyes of a simple man - Marvin. Who was used all the way to the end and then the city disposed of him too by sending into the Valley of Mines. The city didn't change its habits after chapter 6. Because that's how it's done in the real world. Dog eats dog, man eats man. The good people don't change it for the better, but they try to keep it from plunging into complete madness, but even those who stand for good sometimes lack the will to act, using foolish excused for their inaction (Water Mages). And that's how balance is preserved. There is no real light and dark. But endless shades of gray. I prefer to look it that way. Archolos - is a marvellous example of a worldbuilding.
I wholly agree with you. I was so glad that Marvin wasn't a chosen one or anything like that and it was refreshing to see that it was more personal story and not one about saving the world or bringing justice or revenge. Could some aspects be done better? Always, but what we got is masterfully done.
Well said. It's probably the most interesting if not the only interesting depiction of the homeland of a kingdom at war and all of the issues that it causes. Like giving the opportunity for old, subjugated peoples to rise up and rebel. It really gives you the feeling that Rhobar's wars are straining the economic and social fabric of the kingdom. The Wolf Sons just patiently waiting in their mountain stronghold for the right opportunity to take back the island and take vengeance is a great storyline.
His motive for pursuing the main storyline was admittedly a little weak. The story could have used a better hook than his brother getting kidnapped. I still don't really understand what the motive for the kidnapping even was.
@@LetsPlayPC His brother might have been a member of the ring of water since he had an aquamarine ring with him. Kurt, when he found out, told Volker for favors/money etc. This kicked out the entire plot. But yes, I do agree that you should have spent more time or they should have made Jorn more endearing, etc. The way it is, is a little bit rushed. Maybe instead of a brother, a sister would have worked better, but other than this weak spot, the rest of the story is strong and it holds up well, with many intricacies along the way and many reasons the characters to act the way they do.
@@LetsPlayPC The game doesn't tell you this outright, but it's easier to understand if you played the Night of the Raven. Jorn was a member of the ring of water back at Londram. At some point you meet a refugee from your home island who would mention your brother being involved in some secret gatherings that he never told you about since Marvin was too small to know about it. In chapter 5 when you find Kurt's diary you learn that Jorn had an aquamarine ring with him. Kurn was desperate for money and he also knew that Volker was searching for such aquamarine rings so he told Volker about it hoping to get paid for the information. You can even meet Volker himself in the village at a certain point (iirc when you find work for 3 of your friends).
I'm playing Archolos right now and I'm having a really good time in this game :) It just feels like old good Gothic games with some cool new ideas. I really hope that Gothic Remake will be at least as good as this mod. For me Archolos is easily 9/10, really great RPG game.
Like i said before, gothic 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time, but this "mod" is just so good that it tops them, it takes everything that makes gothic 2 good and even improves on it
Another great and free, total conversion standalone rpg to check out is enderal forgotten stories based on skyrim. Even has its own steampage. Quite gothic inspired as well as the greatest atmosphere i have ever experienced in any rpg.
One of the big advantages of main story plot you didn't mention was - main character is not a typical hero like in most RPGs :) I agree main storyline isn't very interesting, but it has some advantages
Man this must be my favorite mod of all time, mostly because i don't like Gothic 2 that much (have mercy on my soul C4G) and archolos turns it into one of my all time favs. I have some issues with the ending even though i applaud the originality.
An amazing game, i played it with polish dub and eng subtitles and had no issues with it, however it was also professionally voiced in russian recently, the concept was the same - to get as many ppl who were involved in the official game voice over as possible. There are many quests with "secret" outcomes that you had to work hard to get, i played the game for trade guild as a swordsman, i wanted to join trackers but couldn't because it required bow skill at a time and i went with crossbows. Generally anything related to the city of Archolos itself is done very well, i particularly loved the apprenticeship mechanics - it felt like you are doing a real job therefore having stable source of income. I worked for the woman who is the bow craftsman - you can sell one piece of each bow or crossbow that you crafted for very good ammount of money and sell skins and other stuff. The fast travel system in the game is also very good QOL change, with boats and guild carts.
I played it recently with some supported mods and it was a great play. As a German speaker, I installer German TTS which really enhanced the experience for me. Overall I think it is a great game and I had a lot of fun playing it.
I for one actually enjoyed the simple and let's say humble main storyline. Fun fact: if once Jorn is abducted you do only the main quests and nothing else, you actually get a secret, earlier ending to the game. For my second playthrough I'm playing a mage build and it's really fun, even if a bit tougher than regular meele builds. How it works: Both the runes and books for learning magic circles are scattered around the map. You need to find them first, then use them - similar to how you use the pickpocket book, The cooking system and alchemy lets you get a lot more available mana regen options than in Gothic 2, not to mention timed mana regen potions, For meele, a mage build uses two-handed staves, which also deal magic damage instead of meele damage - this makes it interesting as while these staves don't deal a lot of damage, most enemies have barely any magic resistance. A couple of those weapons can be found in the game world, the rest you need to buy, The game also includes ways for you to upgrade your spell damage - you can get jewelery, belts, staves and permament potions (rare and expensive) that increase your spell damage. You can get +45 spell damage increase in early chapter 2, which makes you into a basically a magical artillery piece, You can also get a set of jewelery that passively regenerates your mana later in the game.
the fact that you played tens of rpgs in the last 3 years alone in your forgotten rpg series but still see this as the best rpg you played in recent years shows really how good Archolos really is
Yes, the stuttering is an archetype of Gothic. I remember back in the day when you had to use F1 to F4 to adjust the view distance. It was hard. It comes with the territory. Also all the Gothic games have this major aspect: the begining is awesome, and until the end it falls flat. But this time you are not the Chosen One. You are just a simple human. It is a very special gem. I am now, 40 hours in, i just got into the City, and i am still a no name. I am veteran, so i cleared almost all low level mobs, i have tons of skins, furr, teath etc. 90 lp, i took the "mage " path. I really enjoy the slow progression. And the fact that i can remember every nuke and crany i explored it says tons about the Archolos team . I think this is the best Gothic experience. Hands down. Nice review , as always my friend❤ 🥂 🤗
About voice acting - it was a game made by bunch of fans. It is a miracle they even manage to made voiceacting, especially such high quality one (there is a bunch of famous actors involved). It is hard to see HOW they could made it in english, they simply did not have a resouces and more importantly connections. However, the english voiceacting IS COMING. Hard to say when it will be ready, does it comes out with 2.0 or not, but there are works on it. About music - 100% of it is new, made specificly for this game. It is very heveally inspired by oryginal soundtrack, but thore are still new tracks.
I didn't play much yet but even from the opening sequence one can already tell how much effort and compassion the creators put into it. I also played with polish VA even tho I don't speak a single word but it was super immersive. Very good performance
Excellent review, and a ringing endorsement. I've had my eye on this for a while and always hesitated because I was never sure what I'd be in for. Glad to see that they nailed it.
It would be hard to make English voice acting that would sound professional because it was created in Poland and it was non-profit project, so every person involved did it for free.
I liked Marvin as a character. Unlike the Nameless Hero whom was the ''Chosen one'', Marvin felt more like an Opportunist. Sure, if you rush the main quests, without doing anything on the side, you CAN save Jorn and reach another ending. But like most players who play Marvin, Marvin himself is an opportunist in most cases and wants to try to get a better life for himself if he has the possibility to do so, which delays his reach for Jorn's safety. I for myself felt the first time playing that sure, I care about Jorn, but do you see how massive Archolos City really is? Hard to keep focused when seeing what such a massive island has to offer ( both from people and fauna likewise ). In the end, I enjoyed that it was not completely about the journey, but the people met along the way and sharing their stories.
Best game i ever played. I'm from Ukraine, and this atmosphere of approaching war is just.... Also game is so good, that i used to say just let me finish, and then im ready for russian bombs to fall)
This game was awesome and a MUST play for all Gothic 2 fans. Been meaning to play some of gothic 2 mods but the ones I tried didn't work and I didn't have patience or know how to get them to run. This game(not mod imo) though played fine like a stand alone game in steam and was great.
Absolutely loved my time with the game. One thing that i would have loved to see is more common enemies using some more moves that were already in the game, but were reserved for unique variants (wanted posters etc). Such as the forest raider that could flank you by 180 degrees really quickly near the village. Sidestepping golem also comes to mind. In a way mechanics are there, already in the game but barely used. Loved the changes to the economy, actually doing quests for the reward rather than experience and completionism. In G2 you get richer than King Rhobar in 7 ingame days. Some other notable (at least for me) improvements were to cooking, which review mentioned in passing, making it fast and efficient. It makes sense to loot animals you kill, other than for skins/claws if you are using that. Probably haven't looted a single scavenger in my last 5 playthroughs of G2, but here it makes sense as you can make some rather decent healing items from them. Also you can make permanent stat food, if you do no want to be an alchemist (you still should do alchemy though) A thing that the review did not mention but i loved is the addition of ranged variants to high tier enemies, orc crossbowmen and undead archers. Makes fights with a group way more dynamic and unpredictable. Even if ai for orc crossbowmen did not exactly work as intended when i played it, several times they did not agro until i punched them in the face, this might've been patched since i played the game though Things like zombies and minecrawlers not backing off after every hit but rather tanking it a hitting back makes fighting them interesting and dynamic. Hitting them and just managing to jump away just barely is such a rush I agree on being interrupted all the time being a bit tedious. Will tell you this, i do not know where every shop is in the city, but i sure know where every beggar is so i can run past their zone of control so i do not get stopped all the time Now on to why the game is trash (really it is not trash it is bloody amazing)... They did the wargs dirty for some reason. They no longer have pack mentality like in the original, making it easy to draw them out one by one from the group and farm them for experience early in the game. In the original their barking would pull other wargs as well (like wolves do), making separating them much more challenging (still possible but a really tight timing window) Anyway apologies about a wall of text, i'm just really passionate about Gothic 2 and Acrholos
Are you talking about original G2? Cuz most of us are playng G2 NotR and you dont get that rich there so quick. I think the pace is the same but you get way more gold in Archolos if you choose the professions wisely.
@@Vicusor22 Yeah sorry i did not specify but i was talking about NotR. One thing that comes to mind right of the bat for instance was the missing people quest. In NotR they added the sword named... well sword. That many bandits carry and are found along the path to bandit camps which you need to clear out for missing people. They are sold for 75 each (for some reason), and you get plenty of those I believe Vatras gives you the amulet that helps you find those on the ground, but never really used it so i'm not sure about the mechanics. To be honest i might be misrepresenting it unintentionally. As it's probably not the amount of gold gained that is high as much as need for gold is low. In general i only buy amulet of strength and fine longsword in chapter 1, but by then you have tons of cash.
Archolos is the second most popular mod on all of Steam. I completely disagree with your stance on voice acting, I think it's always fine as long as there's subtitles(I do not understand polish). There are mods that use text2speech to include more voiced languages. They are of course inferior to actual voice acting, but the option is there. The only gripe I have personally is the forced bad ends where Marvin gets killed in a cutscene/dialogue.
It being on DX12 as you said and you having a Zen 3 architecture processor (5800X), some people say you might eliminate stutters in games entirely by updating the latest base version of Windows 11 (23H2) if I remember correctly, because they said they ported the Insider program version 24H2 changes to Zen 3, 4, and 5 CPU branch prediction basically also giving a 10% or more free performance too, that is if of course you have and like Windows 11. Just research and do that optional update. I, for one still use and like 10 more, don't like the mac like interface and extra embedded spyware of the OS, although even that can be addressed. Of course now, it can still be an effect of the old engine pushed beyond its limits. At any rate, I greatly enjoyed the video, thanks. Take care, and God bless you, mate !

Even as a German that can not speak Polish I was amazed by the voice acting. I had no problem with it being Polish what so ever. And as a Polish team I think it is completely reasonable for them to focus on a Polish dub. Its a mod. They don't get paid for it and they don't "owe" the players an English dub.
This total conversion mod, a passion project by fans being a love letter to it's inspiration while sometimes being better than the original in some ways reminds me a lot of my time playing Enderal. Have you played it, C4G? I'd love a review like this one covering it tbh, it's a really underrated game imo, and ofc everyone and their mums already have Skyrim, so they can play Enderal for free too.
I did not missed it,played it last year,twice.Good gamę,but have few bugs and mistakes( example: when we are im the village the map says the opposite direction then our real destination is( or the journal,depends how you want to read it ) ). Few times the script didn't worked, especially in the forest hunting quest.
Archolos was absolutely amazing and one of the easiest 10/10 I ever gave ❤❤❤ Also, it must have been amusing listening to Polish dub (which is actually pretty good) - did you learn some words from the game? 😁
I too am a bit frustrated by the UE 5 grip on the gaming industry, it's like there are no more matte colors and simple textures in games, everything has to look like it has a spitshine to it, excessive reflections and ultra hd puddle / cleaned floors and windows simulators. Not complaining too much as I can like them too, but I wish simplicity in design would be a decisive factor and standard for creators.
considering its a fan mod, i can't see how they can add english voice acting. i don't know the language at all and i wish it had english voices but that's the reality of the world , a fan project with only donations ,,,,its a huge success to even have a dub.no matter its shortcomings its a wonderful rpg (waiting for 2.0 because the game is too easy for me )
It is indeed one of the best standalone mods created, especially as part of a beloved series. The review feels like it only scratched the surface tbf, but i guess it gives the people a reason to try it themselves. In a way, after 2 playthroughs and seeing how every decision that was made 3 chapters ago has some effect on the ending made this game leaving a space for more so waiting for 2.0 and see the changes. And Spoiler alert: It is important to mention that the game actually punishes you for playing the game, you can finish the game in chapter 4 if you avoid doing the side quests which is a very interesting approach when it comes to game design standpoint.
Time to dust off my copy and get this Archolos running. BTW, I really appreciate if you can feature games with local co-op (the likes of Torchlight 2 and Diablo 2). Games that you can grind your character in single player and can be used also in local multiplayer.thanks.
It's very nice you have finally changed your opinion about it, the first time I heard about Archolos from you I had a feeling like you didn't want to appreciate magnitude of this mod, and I thought: hmmm, this German don't know what he's loosing by not being able to swallow Poles crated a mod that is superior to every other Gothic-like game
Well in saying they made mistake by focusing on polish voice acting, cause they could have reached more people otherwise, you assume reaching most people is the main goal. This is art, and artists choose the tools, that allow them to best express themselves, not reach most people.
liked that mod a lot, but the start was not very good, i needed more then one try to get into it. This mod also has some big pacing and balancing issues also the story is sometimes unneccessarly streched and sometimes the game takes control over the player in the story and forces linearity
This is a great review. Archolos deserve to be praised and respected, but it does have important problems. I disagree with the fanbase that pictures it as being perfect, the issues should be called out so they can address then in the decade update.
I played this mod last year. It was the first game that gave me this "gothic-feeling" since... well - Gothic 2. It's even better than Gothic in a lot of aspects for me.
the stutter issue while running doesnt appear on all systems/configurations no idea what causes it because it can also happen on vanilla engine i had it a few years back but i dont remember how and even if i fixed it^^ i read lowering view range to 20% with direct x11 engine or windowed mode helps but it has nothing to do with the engine beeing overloaded
I never got into Gothic series (Played some of 3 back then) But I have always been interrested in them. I would have to play 1 and 2 before playing this right?
The game is awesome, but for me a little laggy, is there anything I can do to fix that? Also please reccomend more games/mods like this or something simmilar, I also found in the comments some people mentioning Endereal: Forgotten Stories. Thanks!
Enderal is great. As far as Gothic total conversion mods go, I can recommend Dirty Swamp (has a lot of interesting and challenging combat) and Legend of Ahssûn. Neither is quite as good as Archolos, but they both have English VA.
Im realy looking forward to the german voiceover Version. It will take a while, but i realy get a disconnect in my head when i see anything gothic related and then dont get german voices.😂
Magic in Archolos is better than in Gothic 2, imho. Spoiler: . . . . . . . You don't join a guild but you can progress to 4th circle from books and a lot of levels. You don't craft runes, but you can find them. Water only. You don't need more, it would be an overkill. On the other hand, when you reach 4th circle you get free and constant mana regen and the you feel more like a mage than in Gothic 1 or 2. And if you minmax, you can get all this in chapter 1. Not recomended for the first playthrough, but do try this for the full experience. It is very well executed.

Modern graphics games don't seem to have the devotion to story and replayability that the older graphics games do. So I'm all for the "outdated graphics".
I'm currently on a binge of older games, I'm enjoying the dated visuals. Adds charm and art styles were more important because photorealism wasn't anywhere near achievable.
Good graphic (advanced with many effects) rarely happens in combination with gameplay that's not shallow... too much work.
I honestly I love how Gothic looks. Granted, this game came out when I was young and so it's not from before my time. But still. I think the Gothic games are a perfect example of games that straddle the line between having good enough graphics that it's capable of creating an incredible atmosphere and the vision of the devs not being limited, while also leaving enough room for your imagination.
It is true that ugly outdated games can sometimes be the best experiences ever. Gothic, whoever, is not one of them.

Yeah, it really is one of the best. My first playthrough took me 130 hours. There's so much stuff to do, and the quality is really insane. It's probably the best fan-made game ever, and possibly better than G1/G2 even.

@@gigidasha4475 Very hard decision, but neither will disappoint. I think I enjoyed Enderal a lot more because of how unique it feels. It starts slow, but picks up nicely. The story twists and character development are much more impactful too.

As a Pole I can tell you voice acting is giga good.
Before the project split up from Dzieje Khorinis they were using original voice actors, but these ones sound very similar to the original once, also few of them are quite known actors/celebrities.
I don't speak polish but i played with polish soundover. I'm a ukrainian, our languages a quite similar, so i could understand like ~40% of words. The experience was AMAZING! In some way that very-alike-but-still-different soundover added a ton to the medieval fantasy atmosphere. Amazing voice acting, truly

I don't speak Polish, and my mother language is Dutch, which bears no real similarities to Polish. But I still enjoyed the voice acting. I even picked up a tiny bit of Polish I believe :)
Not ALL of the voice actors nail their performance, but overall it was very enjoyable.
@@sobAKADUKA I have the same experience. The voice acting is amazing. Especially Marvin's voice, which sounds great at the beginning of the game, when he's still a little naive, and at the end, when he's experienced.

It makes the game feel quite different from a regular run and forces you to make the most out of limited resources, making it more difficult indirectly.

Also, I don't think that focusing on Polish voice acting was a mistake. Gothic is a German game, but extremely popular in Poland and the Polish Gothic community is
among the most active ones. There are probably more Polish fans than those who speak English. The Russian community is also very active and made their own professional voice acting.
I speak German and Russian and I played with Russian voice acting and German subtitles. It worked very well for me.

@@jpzadran4774 you have to play without doing any sidequests. Just rushing main story. So for example if you're going to the city you have to bribe the guard or go through the sewers because albyn's permission or going in with the merchant require doing sidequests
I've heard many people complaining about the story of Marvin being weak. I have my own view about it. Archolos is not just a story about Marvin. The main character is Archolos itself. Ruthless, unfair, grim and manipulative world. Throughout the story we get hints about how Archolos doesn't care about the lives of others. How the Guild and the Guard pursue their own goals, feeding you false promises of later help. The game teaches you the bitter truth about politics: those who are in power will use you to gain more power.
We see some truly twisted decisions devoid of all empathy and common sense. Ramsay "solved" the Beast problem by turning the hunt into a show and a feast despite you being the only survivor. Denial of orc presence until the very end.
Wolf Sons are another tragic example. Their home was taken by Myrtanians and in the end the rest of their population (and culture) are sent to the Valley of Mines. The Kingdom was slowly suffocating them in an unfriendly part of the island only to finish them off as soon as the opportunity presented itself.
Both Volker and Ulryk joined forces but planned to set each other up in the end. In the end, the city got reaped what it had sawn: the prosperous and rich part was burned and butchered while the poor district and the harbor was spared the carnage. That is the true story of Archolos, viewed through the eyes of a simple man - Marvin. Who was used all the way to the end and then the city disposed of him too by sending into the Valley of Mines. The city didn't change its habits after chapter 6. Because that's how it's done in the real world. Dog eats dog, man eats man. The good people don't change it for the better, but they try to keep it from plunging into complete madness, but even those who stand for good sometimes lack the will to act, using foolish excused for their inaction (Water Mages). And that's how balance is preserved. There is no real light and dark. But endless shades of gray.
I prefer to look it that way. Archolos - is a marvellous example of a worldbuilding.

I was so glad that Marvin wasn't a chosen one or anything like that and it was refreshing to see that it was more personal story and not one about saving the world or bringing justice or revenge. Could some aspects be done better? Always, but what we got is masterfully done.
Well said. It's probably the most interesting if not the only interesting depiction of the homeland of a kingdom at war and all of the issues that it causes. Like giving the opportunity for old, subjugated peoples to rise up and rebel. It really gives you the feeling that Rhobar's wars are straining the economic and social fabric of the kingdom. The Wolf Sons just patiently waiting in their mountain stronghold for the right opportunity to take back the island and take vengeance is a great storyline.
His motive for pursuing the main storyline was admittedly a little weak. The story could have used a better hook than his brother getting kidnapped. I still don't really understand what the motive for the kidnapping even was.

Kurt, when he found out, told Volker for favors/money etc. This kicked out the entire plot. But yes, I do agree that you should have spent more time or they should have made Jorn more endearing, etc. The way it is, is a little bit rushed. Maybe instead of a brother, a sister would have worked better, but other than this weak spot, the rest of the story is strong and it holds up well, with many intricacies along the way and many reasons the characters to act the way they do.

At some point you meet a refugee from your home island who would mention your brother being involved in some secret gatherings that he never told you about since Marvin was too small to know about it.
In chapter 5 when you find Kurt's diary you learn that Jorn had an aquamarine ring with him. Kurn was desperate for money and he also knew that Volker was searching for such aquamarine rings so he told Volker about it hoping to get paid for the information. You can even meet Volker himself in the village at a certain point (iirc when you find work for 3 of your friends).

I'm playing Archolos right now and I'm having a really good time in this game :) It just feels like old good Gothic games with some cool new ideas. I really hope that Gothic Remake will be at least as good as this mod. For me Archolos is easily 9/10, really great RPG game.
Like i said before, gothic 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time, but this "mod" is just so good that it tops them, it takes everything that makes gothic 2 good and even improves on it

One of the big advantages of main story plot you didn't mention was - main character is not a typical hero like in most RPGs :) I agree main storyline isn't very interesting, but it has some advantages
Man this must be my favorite mod of all time, mostly because i don't like Gothic 2 that much (have mercy on my soul C4G) and archolos turns it into one of my all time favs. I have some issues with the ending even though i applaud the originality.

An amazing game, i played it with polish dub and eng subtitles and had no issues with it, however it was also professionally voiced in russian recently, the concept was the same - to get as many ppl who were involved in the official game voice over as possible. There are many quests with "secret" outcomes that you had to work hard to get, i played the game for trade guild as a swordsman, i wanted to join trackers but couldn't because it required bow skill at a time and i went with crossbows. Generally anything related to the city of Archolos itself is done very well, i particularly loved the apprenticeship mechanics - it felt like you are doing a real job therefore having stable source of income. I worked for the woman who is the bow craftsman - you can sell one piece of each bow or crossbow that you crafted for very good ammount of money and sell skins and other stuff. The fast travel system in the game is also very good QOL change, with boats and guild carts.
I played it recently with some supported mods and it was a great play.
As a German speaker, I installer German TTS which really enhanced the experience for me. Overall I think it is a great game and I had a lot of fun playing it.
There is a special ending if you rush the main story and don't do any sidequests. You should check it out!
I for one actually enjoyed the simple and let's say humble main storyline. Fun fact: if once Jorn is abducted you do only the main quests and nothing else, you actually get a secret, earlier ending to the game.
For my second playthrough I'm playing a mage build and it's really fun, even if a bit tougher than regular meele builds. How it works:
Both the runes and books for learning magic circles are scattered around the map. You need to find them first, then use them - similar to how you use the pickpocket book,
The cooking system and alchemy lets you get a lot more available mana regen options than in Gothic 2, not to mention timed mana regen potions,
For meele, a mage build uses two-handed staves, which also deal magic damage instead of meele damage - this makes it interesting as while these staves don't deal a lot of damage, most enemies have barely any magic resistance. A couple of those weapons can be found in the game world, the rest you need to buy,
The game also includes ways for you to upgrade your spell damage - you can get jewelery, belts, staves and permament potions (rare and expensive) that increase your spell damage. You can get +45 spell damage increase in early chapter 2, which makes you into a basically a magical artillery piece,
You can also get a set of jewelery that passively regenerates your mana later in the game.
the fact that you played tens of rpgs in the last 3 years alone in your forgotten rpg series but still see this as the best rpg you played in recent years shows really how good Archolos really is
Yes, the stuttering is an archetype of Gothic. I remember back in the day when you had to use F1 to F4 to adjust the view distance. It was hard. It comes with the territory. Also all the Gothic games have this major aspect: the begining is awesome, and until the end it falls flat. But this time you are not the Chosen One. You are just a simple human. It is a very special gem. I am now, 40 hours in, i just got into the City, and i am still a no name. I am veteran, so i cleared almost all low level mobs, i have tons of skins, furr, teath etc. 90 lp, i took the "mage " path. I really enjoy the slow progression. And the fact that i can remember every nuke and crany i explored it says tons about the Archolos team . I think this is the best Gothic experience. Hands down.

About voice acting - it was a game made by bunch of fans. It is a miracle they even manage to made voiceacting, especially such high quality one (there is a bunch of famous actors involved). It is hard to see HOW they could made it in english, they simply did not have a resouces and more importantly connections.
However, the english voiceacting IS COMING. Hard to say when it will be ready, does it comes out with 2.0 or not, but there are works on it.
About music - 100% of it is new, made specificly for this game. It is very heveally inspired by oryginal soundtrack, but thore are still new tracks.
I didn't play much yet but even from the opening sequence one can already tell how much effort and compassion the creators put into it. I also played with polish VA even tho I don't speak a single word but it was super immersive. Very good performance

It would be hard to make English voice acting that would sound professional because it was created in Poland and it was non-profit project, so every person involved did it for free.
As for me, this was the best main story of all Gothic games. Also woice acting is perfect, i just learned polish thanks to Archolos

Still haven't got around this, I did play Velaya: Tale Of The warrior mod back in the day.
I liked Marvin as a character. Unlike the Nameless Hero whom was the ''Chosen one'', Marvin felt more like an Opportunist. Sure, if you rush the main quests, without doing anything on the side, you CAN save Jorn and reach another ending. But like most players who play Marvin, Marvin himself is an opportunist in most cases and wants to try to get a better life for himself if he has the possibility to do so, which delays his reach for Jorn's safety. I for myself felt the first time playing that sure, I care about Jorn, but do you see how massive Archolos City really is? Hard to keep focused when seeing what such a massive island has to offer ( both from people and fauna likewise ). In the end, I enjoyed that it was not completely about the journey, but the people met along the way and sharing their stories.

This game was awesome and a MUST play for all Gothic 2 fans. Been meaning to play some of gothic 2 mods but the ones I tried didn't work and I didn't have patience or know how to get them to run. This game(not mod imo) though played fine like a stand alone game in steam and was great.
Such an incredible game. More RPGs and writers need to use this as a reference.
Absolutely loved my time with the game.
One thing that i would have loved to see is more common enemies using some more moves that were already in the game, but were reserved for unique variants (wanted posters etc). Such as the forest raider that could flank you by 180 degrees really quickly near the village. Sidestepping golem also comes to mind. In a way mechanics are there, already in the game but barely used.
Loved the changes to the economy, actually doing quests for the reward rather than experience and completionism. In G2 you get richer than King Rhobar in 7 ingame days.
Some other notable (at least for me) improvements were to cooking, which review mentioned in passing, making it fast and efficient. It makes sense to loot animals you kill, other than for skins/claws if you are using that.
Probably haven't looted a single scavenger in my last 5 playthroughs of G2, but here it makes sense as you can make some rather decent healing items from them. Also you can make permanent stat food, if you do no want to be an alchemist (you still should do alchemy though)
A thing that the review did not mention but i loved is the addition of ranged variants to high tier enemies, orc crossbowmen and undead archers. Makes fights with a group way more dynamic and unpredictable. Even if ai for orc crossbowmen did not exactly work as intended when i played it, several times they did not agro until i punched them in the face, this might've been patched since i played the game though
Things like zombies and minecrawlers not backing off after every hit but rather tanking it a hitting back makes fighting them interesting and dynamic. Hitting them and just managing to jump away just barely is such a rush
I agree on being interrupted all the time being a bit tedious. Will tell you this, i do not know where every shop is in the city, but i sure know where every beggar is so i can run past their zone of control so i do not get stopped all the time
Now on to why the game is trash (really it is not trash it is bloody amazing)...
They did the wargs dirty for some reason. They no longer have pack mentality like in the original, making it easy to draw them out one by one from the group and farm them for experience early in the game. In the original their barking would pull other wargs as well (like wolves do), making separating them much more challenging (still possible but a really tight timing window)
Anyway apologies about a wall of text, i'm just really passionate about Gothic 2 and Acrholos
Are you talking about original G2? Cuz most of us are playng G2 NotR and you dont get that rich there so quick. I think the pace is the same but you get way more gold in Archolos if you choose the professions wisely.

One thing that comes to mind right of the bat for instance was the missing people quest. In NotR they added the sword named... well sword. That many bandits carry and are found along the path to bandit camps which you need to clear out for missing people. They are sold for 75 each (for some reason), and you get plenty of those
I believe Vatras gives you the amulet that helps you find those on the ground, but never really used it so i'm not sure about the mechanics.
To be honest i might be misrepresenting it unintentionally. As it's probably not the amount of gold gained that is high as much as need for gold is low. In general i only buy amulet of strength and fine longsword in chapter 1, but by then you have tons of cash.

Archolos is the second most popular mod on all of Steam. I completely disagree with your stance on voice acting, I think it's always fine as long as there's subtitles(I do not understand polish). There are mods that use text2speech to include more voiced languages. They are of course inferior to actual voice acting, but the option is there.
The only gripe I have personally is the forced bad ends where Marvin gets killed in a cutscene/dialogue.
It being on DX12 as you said and you having a Zen 3 architecture processor (5800X), some people say you might eliminate stutters in games entirely by updating the latest base version of Windows 11 (23H2) if I remember correctly, because they said they ported the Insider program version 24H2 changes to Zen 3, 4, and 5 CPU branch prediction basically also giving a 10% or more free performance too, that is if of course you have and like Windows 11. Just research and do that optional update. I, for one still use and like 10 more, don't like the mac like interface and extra embedded spyware of the OS, although even that can be addressed. Of course now, it can still be an effect of the old engine pushed beyond its limits. At any rate, I greatly enjoyed the video, thanks. Take care, and God bless you, mate !

Even as a German that can not speak Polish I was amazed by the voice acting. I had no problem with it being Polish what so ever.
And as a Polish team I think it is completely reasonable for them to focus on a Polish dub. Its a mod. They don't get paid for it and they don't "owe" the players an English dub.
This total conversion mod, a passion project by fans being a love letter to it's inspiration while sometimes being better than the original in some ways reminds me a lot of my time playing Enderal. Have you played it, C4G? I'd love a review like this one covering it tbh, it's a really underrated game imo, and ofc everyone and their mums already have Skyrim, so they can play Enderal for free too.

I did not missed it,played it last year,twice.Good gamę,but have few bugs and mistakes( example: when we are im the village the map says the opposite direction then our real destination is( or the journal,depends how you want to read it ) ). Few times the script didn't worked, especially in the forest hunting quest.
I know a few people who worked on this game, they are a cool bunch. It's a must play for all Gothicheads.

Those textures are so beautiful and immersive, I don't like new plastic EU5 graphics, I prefer those any day.
I too am a bit frustrated by the UE 5 grip on the gaming industry, it's like there are no more matte colors and simple textures in games, everything has to look like it has a spitshine to it, excessive reflections and ultra hd puddle / cleaned floors and windows simulators. Not complaining too much as I can like them too, but I wish simplicity in design would be a decisive factor and standard for creators.

considering its a fan mod, i can't see how they can add english voice acting. i don't know the language at all and i wish it had english voices but that's the reality of the world , a fan project with only donations ,,,,its a huge success to even have a dub.no matter its shortcomings its a wonderful rpg (waiting for 2.0 because the game is too easy for me )

It is indeed one of the best standalone mods created, especially as part of a beloved series.
The review feels like it only scratched the surface tbf, but i guess it gives the people a reason to try it themselves.
In a way, after 2 playthroughs and seeing how every decision that was made 3 chapters ago has some effect on the ending made this game leaving a space for more so waiting for 2.0 and see the changes.
And Spoiler alert:
It is important to mention that the game actually punishes you for playing the game, you can finish the game in chapter 4 if you avoid doing the side quests which is a very interesting approach when it comes to game design standpoint.

Well in saying they made mistake by focusing on polish voice acting, cause they could have reached more people otherwise, you assume reaching most people is the main goal. This is art, and artists choose the tools, that allow them to best express themselves, not reach most people.
liked that mod a lot, but the start was not very good, i needed more then one try to get into it. This mod also has some big pacing and balancing issues also the story is sometimes unneccessarly streched and sometimes the game takes control over the player in the story and forces linearity

This is a great review. Archolos deserve to be praised and respected, but it does have important problems. I disagree with the fanbase that pictures it as being perfect, the issues should be called out so they can address then in the decade update.

I played this mod last year. It was the first game that gave me this "gothic-feeling" since... well - Gothic 2. It's even better than Gothic in a lot of aspects for me.

Enderal is great. As far as Gothic total conversion mods go, I can recommend Dirty Swamp (has a lot of interesting and challenging combat) and Legend of Ahssûn. Neither is quite as good as Archolos, but they both have English VA.

Its not because it looks old, its because of the gothic controls
200+ hours in the game. It is very good in my opinion.
Im realy looking forward to the german voiceover Version. It will take a while, but i realy get a disconnect in my head when i see anything gothic related and then dont get german voices.😂

You don't join a guild but you can progress to 4th circle from books and a lot of levels. You don't craft runes, but you can find them. Water only. You don't need more, it would be an overkill. On the other hand, when you reach 4th circle you get free and constant mana regen and the you feel more like a mage than in Gothic 1 or 2. And if you minmax, you can get all this in chapter 1. Not recomended for the first playthrough, but do try this for the full experience.
