A memorable tribute from a great artist to another befitting the greatness of D W Griffith. As the hub of movies has shifted away from Hollywood to many other diffused locations in different parts of the world, masters and connoisseurs of this unique medium of the 20th century will have the need to pay their homage in gratitude to the master of them all, D W Griffith. As Stroheim says in this tribute, Griffith was a whole man whose intellect, skills, emotions and artistry were all well-integrated in his personality in such a perfect manner that he could have shone brightly in any field he cared to choose and specialise in. It is the good fortune of the field of films that it had an illustrious founder like him. That he could convey his message and make his characters communicate effectively in silent films of his times show his genius in most glowing terms. His technical nuances and extraction of what he wanted from the humble motion picture camera of his times despite its low level of technical development show his ability to get the best out of men, material and circumstance. Above all, D W Griffith was a great gentleman whose head and heart were in the right place at all times. Hats off to DWG and his worthy colleague, EVS.

I was surprised to hear that spoken. It's a reference to the balcony of a theater where black audience members had to sit in the era of segregation.

But DW hated hearts of the world! Completely opposed his idea that "war" was the enemy, not any people in particular.
This only proves that brilliant cinematic workmanship can be put to any task like by the flip of a switch - now for patriotism, now for socialism, or for racism, pro-war or anti-war - a frightfully powerful tool - Aldous Huxley wrote about it...
