Thank you for the well balanced introduction. I'm most grateful.
@ Joseph - thanks, it was a tough one to not get too complicated and keep it under 3 mins. I started in March and almost gave up.
@@PizzaFLIX I think that was just about perfect. One thing about loving old movies, is that it's not hard to convince yourself that the history is entirely factual. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, and sometimes it's pointing in the right or wrong direction. So context matters.
You know, sometimes it doesn't matter if the story and the production are good enough, and it's far enough in the past that we know we don't have all the details.
I'm thinking of movies like "The Passion of Joan of Arc" or "A Lion in Winter".
Keep up the good work, Mister Flix!👍
Only about 3-5 million deaths. Much better
@@davegoodridge8352 Good grief Mr. “Only”.
Joseph Noussair I looked on Google and there were Ukrainian resistant fighters who did guerilla warfare against the Soviets and Germans,by 1944 it increased.
Excellent choice of film today! 🎬
I have been impressed countless times how films can capture moments in history so very completely that it can feel like we are THERE!
The masterful visual impressions, and the range of authentic emotions we find ourselves experiencing, as we watch….well, it’s absolutely priceless…!
Much love to the brilliant & brave citizens of Ukraine. 🇺🇦💙💛
And to our beloved Mr. Pizza Flix, *THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR YOUR MANY YEARS OF TOP SHELF CONTRIBUTIONS TO UA-cam!*
It is VERY MUCH appreciated!
The movie is pure Hollywwod fiction! The Ukrainians welcomed the Germans as liberators of the brutality of the USSR! Many volunteered for the SS Ukrainian Division the 14th Voluntary Division SS Galizien.
@@benadam7753 No not Hollywood fiction. If you bother to look it up study. Yes some Ukrainians as with other nations did collaborate with the Germsns but a number joined the Resistance and fought the Nazis. Infact some risked their lives to save as many Jews as they could.
Excellent (and accurate) introduction. A child of a WWII Veteran, I've always liked anti-Nazi films, but this one always left me a little cold, having also lived during the era of the Berlin Wall, and being familiar with the atrocities of Stalinist Russia.
Thank you
Understandable...just a few short years after this movie was made, Hollywood was producing propaganda to the exactly opposite effect. Neither accurate!
It seems we’ve replaced one century of bad ideas and behaviors with another one. It is the folly of man that he forgets.
Хотите сказать, что зверства и жертвы немецкого нацизма ничто по сравнению с так называемыми зверствами сталинской России? Если так говорите, то Вы - нацист
@@user-iz1of7pb1m I would say they were equally horrific and both extremes satisfy the definition of fascism.
Excellent cast, great story, thank you for sharing
Interesting film. Easy to see why it was nominated for six Academy Awards. Thanks for posting and be safe 🙏
Thanks for the great print. Not even TCM is showing this quality of print yet. This is another good film that languished in the public domain for years.
Great movie, great print and GREAT PizzaFLIX!!!
Woo hoo
Thanks for your efforts.
Blessings to all
Thank you PizzaFlix. You have a great narrator's voice.
Thanks
wonderful film, James Wong Howe was a master with a camera......Bravo
@ Paul Brown -- I will be doing a Movie Class on the talented Mr. Howe soon.
Except on that wagon journey in front of the process screen. Or perhaps that was in editing/post production…
Just as I remember this film when I was little. Superb film!
Never heard of it, and yet cinematography great, music great, editing great, sound great!
When the Cold War began, everyone associated with The North Star wanted to distance themselves as far away from it as possible. It became a forgotten film.
WUNDERBAR! Thank you!
Thank you for documentary.
Thanks🍕Flix😊
Those who ignore/debunk/forget (sic) history are doomed to repeat it(apologies to originator). Thank you for reminding us of history that must not be forgotten and must always guide our present, influence our future, if we are to have one indeed, God willing.
The bitterest of ironies. Then it was the Germans. Now and incredulously at this moment, it is the Russians! What madness, what insanity... The film itself is beautifully filmed and acted. Thank you so much for posting!
Yea but Stalin is no better then Hitler politically correct film the communist invaded Poland weeks after Hitler attacked them with their pact of dividing Poland between them. I don't trust the communist now more then I trust our present communist government.
yup. and the Ukrainians still don't want the Russians.
80 years and nothing has changed. Nothing except 50 years of being oppressed. Ya.... like they will ever go back to that.
Imagine yourself living under an iron boot for 50 years and then being free " just as you and i have been our whole life" ...and then all of a sudden... the iron boot is coming back.
You are not going quietly are you?
And yet some how Americans can actually justify what is going on..... ? Just because the glorious leader is a puppet of the attacker. And no other reason. Going against everything we all believe in. For a piece of garbage. Ya i voted for him once. ONCE. And only once. Now.... after totally standing against everything i fought for and watched friends die for. NEVER AGAIN BUD. Bullets were invented to prevent such events.
allays the bad ones are foreigners jajajaja
Never seen Walter Brennan play such a part as this!
I agree. Walter Brennan is the last person I’d think of in a pro-Soviet movie. He was a John Bircher and a rabid anti-communist.
@@DoubleMrE I'm sure he was well paid.
Excellent cast
This is a great film.
Also, thank you for showing the original picture.
Thank you!

Awesome intro 🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽
Thanks for the upload.💯
that intro was very insightful thank you
Thank you.
Wonderful! Truly great film. Fantastic introduction. Flawless print. What more can I say?
1943, complete when the truth was been exposed... thanks again 👍
Happy new subscriber. The introductions remind me of the late great Robert Osborne. Thanks for the show!
What a great movie simple and best
Thank you
Thankyou for stating this film is not historically accurate and that 7 million Ukranians died from famine due to Stalin
Yes.
Compared to about the same number after it all done thanks to Biden
Joseph Stalin in 2017 voted most outstanding person! By Russians. Anne Applebaums 2017 book, Red Famine. 5 million died in Soviet Union, 3.9 Of which were Ukrainians. From New Republic article "Why Stalin Starved Ukraine".
@The First Crusader Salute !
Stalin and the RIP of the food chain are Atheist Jews,
'What time is it? Its 5 oclock--.....in the afternoon or evening?' heart-wrenching--love this movie
Probably a few of those kids singing in the school born in the early 1930’s are still alive.
Farley Granger and Anne Baxter appeared on the January 25, 1944 issue of LOOK magazine, in character, to publicize "The North Star."
Cool little bite of trivia 🍕🍕🍕
Great movie and perfect for the 4th of July. Thank You
Great movie!!!
ERICH VON STROHEIM was a movie maker and he made outrageous movies. Long to short, Gloria Swanson, who was funding one of God films, walked on the set and immediately pulled all her money out. She said there was more film on the cutting room floor than in the projector. His most famous film is probably Sunset Boulevard, with Gloria Swanson. I am one of his biggest fans! These days, perhaps the only remaining fanatic of Erich Von Stroheim, unfortunately.
Great cast! Thanks for the upload.
Five Graves To Cairo !!
you sound like the Great Gabbo, lol. Tbs, The Wedding March is incredible cinema. OVP eccentricities got the best of him.
Excellent movie
Great film
Excellent choice of movie and great intro. The North Star (like Action In The North Atlantic) is an amazing combination of Hollywood craftsmanship and simplistic heavy-handed propaganda -- as craft is is one of Lewis Milestone's best. Great introduction, btw! The irony is that these were produced at the behest of the US Government, and yet, barely ten years later the writers and directors were held accountable at HUAC for their "communist sympathies".
Thanks
Today, we have a corporate war empire state, and anyone who says it's not Russia's fault is a dirty, ummm, Putin lover and un-American. Yes, The McCarthy Red Scare Purges and follow ups like COINTELPRO settled the question, and we can't get enough yellow coke.
HUAC members were against FDR & his administration. Similar to today.
One of the few Hollywood scores by Aaron Copleland--celebrated for the score for The Red Pony which was basically a Republic B movie
There was another film that, coincidentally, co-starred Brennan, Andrews, and Baxter.
It took place in the Bayou country.
Great movie
Aaron Copland?!? The man who trained Leonard Bernstein? Wow!
I worked for Aaron as one of his nurses in the 1980's. He was a wonderful man, a lot of fun and he was very proud of his film scores. My favorite of Aaron's films scores is Our Town. He did win the Oscar for the Heiress in 1949 and we used to carry it around the house at times. Great memories. J.L., R.N.
I was fortunate enuff to perform in THE SECOND HURRICANE...an Opera of his. Its gorgeous.
Jeez, they're always singing!
Good movie
Did I hear Walter Brennan's voice? Gosh I miss that man!
Great actor but virulent racist…
This Film is really good.
It has such depth of why fascists
And warmongers are to be fought at any cost. Thank you for this Movie.
Wow! Aaron Copeland wrote the music and George Gerswhin's brother Ira wrote the lyrics?
Great stuff
Walter brennan was the grand father named karp. It shows in the credits...
Could you list the other similar films (when US were simpatetic to USSR).
classic
History repeats
These are my ancestors and incredibly accurate.
Lew Milestone is one of my favorite directors, but this isn't one of his best. The direction is technically sound, but it's easy to see his heart wasn't in this one. There's not much of the extra touches he put into films that he has a passion for, like his classic war movies.
@Simon McCreath I was thinking specifically of "A Walk in the Sun", which might be the best war movie of the era, or "The Purple Heart", about Doolittle Raiders captured and tried by the Japanese, which handles a dark subject by using noir film techniques in what is a powerful and effective propaganda film.
@Simon McCreath -- good one, and let's not forget "All Quiet on the Western Front."
Eric von Stroheim looks so very much Rommel!
He really does!!!
Interesting how this actually has the look of a Russian movie. I think Hollywood actually saw European movies and it influenced them. UFA in Berlin was making "women's pictures", so was Hollywood
Dana Andrews!
We will always be fighting for it.
Wow fabulous
History repeats itself
Not a good thing.
🍕🍕🍕Good movie 👍🍕🍕🍕
I dont want your face or voice. I want the credits at both ends! Thank you so much for leaving them in for this video. I do also greatly appreciate the info on the FIRST of the 2 Russian genocides against Ukraine. But I resent your cutting out the credits on some videos.
Headline from my newspaper today: _Ukraine war: Residents told to flee before Russians roll in_
Beautiful Ukraine
Ukraine is in the same trip now🤔
At 13:23 Is that girl on the left with one tooth Julie Andrews?
"The Man You Loved to Hate."
Brilliant film, I hope they have as much success today against their murdering brothers in Russia
Like the success they had when they murdered 30,000 jews in 2 days
"murdering"???
I just watched a other Dana Andrews film yesterday that he played a Russian ( The Iron Curtain 1948) Its a wonder he did not get blacklisted in the 50s for being a Communist. People in Hollywood got blacklisted for less.
@ Troy - interesting… I’ve been reading about 1948s The Iron Curtain. I may be posting the sequel from 1954 Operation Manhunt.
@@PizzaFLIX I would really be interested in watching it !
Yeah now Hollywood is all commi
Perhaps the fact that USSR was our ally in WWII sorta mitigated that?
@@DavidRice111 No, people were blacklisted in the 50s just for knowing a communist from up to 30 years earlier.
1:44:42 - This is an absolutely fascinating part of this movie, when the doctor moralizes, because it gives a moral message about fighting Nazis in 1943. The gist of the idea is that there is no such thing as a good Nazi; just bad and worse. Kill them all.
Remember that it’s a propaganda film. Delivered at the height of the war when the tide had shifted, it’s saying “Kill them all and let God sort them out.” Soviets were now honourable and aggrieved allies, and Germans were enemies to whom no quarter was to be given.
In a broader sense, it may be making the point that if you reluctantly comply with a dictatorship and are an “enabler”, that you may be morally worse and more contemptible than the willing participants. Is this a message which may be applicable today?
@glenncox9 what would you have prefe6 resistance fighters do sit back and let the Nazis take over, kill them. Not propaganda. Some joined the resistance to fight for their freedom.
why i cant see it
grandpa sounds and looks like walter brennan
Thank you so much! Your content makes life better...when this world is on fire. Can’t believe Roe v Wade was overturned. So stupid. Plus, the war going on in the Ukraine. You said it.
I’m so glad pizza flix is here!
Once they become adults, the babies will appreciate not being murdered.
@@RonGreeneComedian Negative
@nonprofitgirl
Stalin starved 7 million Ukranians to death.
American mothers have killed 60 million of their own children, including 800 black babies every day.
Oh, yes. Roe did a great job, even more prolific than Stalin, a monster.
Roe v Wade never belonged in the Supreme Court. And Ukraine? Lol, one of the most corrupt countries ever but to their credit, they reject gay marriage and all trans ideology.
Freedom of choice… That’s what this country has always been overturning Roe versus wade is against what we are as a nation
So very sad that it was not the last war😪😪😪😪😪
Sound is low
You need to turn up your volume.
Dana Andrews is always a bombarded, after this he went home to Boone City.
Starring DANA ANDREWS
So many great actors in this.
@@PizzaFLIX There really is and it’s the only time we get to here Dana Andrews actual singing voice. I love that.
Srahkoo vahkoo!
I wish that was the last war...but , today, it doesn't seem so....wm
I liked this movie although I'm not a fan of Farley Granger. However, I did like Dana Andrews' acting.
@ Rhonda - why don’t you like Farley Granger? Did you see Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train?
7:50, coffee kettle was put such high place on table, that’s looking dangerous. Why do Russian people do it in such a way?
@ Melanie -- I noticed that too.
@@PizzaFLIX It's not a coffee kettle. It's called a samovar, used to make tea. Water is heated in the bottom urn. There's a spigot to put the boiling water into a teapot. Then the teapot goes on top where the tea steeps & stays hot.
Good Pro Resistance movie.
Good film once it got started but too much like a musical at the start
THIS CINAMATIC PIECE IS AS ABOUT AS REMOTE AS PLANET PLUTO.........BUT WORTHY OF PRAISE !
Green fields of France "and willie mcbride it all started again and again and again and again"
One of the most powerful and effective antiwar songs ever written.
"My dream is to go to America...and become the world's foremost female plumber!"
Super rabid anti-communist and known arch-conservative Walter Brennan is in this movie! Shocking he did this!
He was also a rabid racist… but, if you know your history, the Allies needed Russia’s help in WWII… They were integral in defeating the Germans. Hitler’s armies getting bogged down in the brutal winter weather in Russia was instrumental in putting the final nail in German war in Europe. BTW- does it upset you that America brought nazi war criminal scientists into our country after the war? There are levels to this war shit, bruh…
a really good quality print. Thank you. And well done James Wong Howe. The film itself is the most awful twaddle even for 1940's propaganda standards. There isn't a single believable or realistic scene in it (though the actors do what they can). I had to force myself to watch it through to the end. I can't imagine what the moviegoers of the time would have been thinking as they exited the theatre. It is amusing though to see America's fear of communism thrown out the window with such abandon!
Thanks for posting unexpurgated version of this film as opposed to Armored Attack which has a tacked on coda that is inane and spoils Hellman’s intention… No matter how misguided. The Deer Hunter is a masterpiece and possibly one of the greatest anti-war films in film history. However ,the “ Russian roulette “ scenes are pure Codswallop …larded with racist overtones. Would I have preferred that they be censored or cut from the film? Absolutely Not!!! Art is not to be cut to fit the cloth of the times . Aaron Copland’s score is brilliant . My favorite line from this film is the last one: “ The earth belongs to us if we but take it. And, We Will Take it”… The film serves its purpose as war propaganda to encourage audiences ,whose sons were off fighting in Europe , that the cause was worthy of the sacrifice .
Has Putin seen this movie?
Is this a movie about the survivors of Stalin's Holodomor???? Are these the Russians that Stalin transported to the Ukraine to replace those he killed during the Holodomor?
Thank you for highlighting the blatant propaganda narrative of this movie. It’s educational at this current time of propaganda narratives.
This movie reminds me of a red dawn movie! Very great movie showing the way evil moves in to destroy normal people, and how they fight back...I dread this happening in our country today...as the war in Ukraine against the Russian Powers try to take over...
vil
Fantastic anti-war movie
I never could tolerate a musical. Don't know how anyone does.
Propaganda, but well done, though the radio announcer butchered Lodz
Ukraine was definitely no place to try to romanticize, particularly at that time. It was a pretty brutal existence living there....or trying to.
It tells you just how brutal the Stalinist regime was that many Ukrainians saw Hitler as a liberator. The history of nowhere in Central Europe is black & white, it's been a mess of shifting shades of grey since the Middle Ages.
The Ukrainian's always get the fuzzy end of the lollipop.
Lambs going to the slaughter house and soldiers also!
Next time some stupid politician asks why you need an assault weapon, you point them to this history. This is why you need an assault weapon.
No this is why you need a government that is dedicated to peace not war
USSR at that time
The Soviet Union is an abbreviation of The USSR.
