I'm not saying this is the correct way but I put a block of wood on a jack under the oil pan and pulled the top motor mount so the engine could drop down s few inches. I believe this saved me from having to make voodoo dolls of every engineer who touched the blueprints on this vehicle.
I only needed to replace the pulley. But, man, the video makes it look a lot easier that it actually was. (Actually they cut that hard part of that out.)
For anyone else who might attempt this, it’s a pretty easy procedure except for actually getting the pulley out of its tight space. He explains that the pulley has to turn toward the inside of the engine to clear the tip of the water pump pulley mount. On our 2013 there is a black plastic arched wire guide behind it that will get in the way. You’ll have to flex that, a LOT, maybe even crack it like we did-didn’t seem to create problem-to get the full angle needed squeeze the pulley out between the pump and the frame. Now that I know that part, I would say it’s not that hard. But...
...You’ve got to put the the new one in the same way, which was actually the hardest part. With two guys, we got it pretty quickly with one of us applying some decent force from below, and another guiding the pulley with a long screwdriver and some equally decent force from above. That part only took 5 minutes, but I don’t think I could have done it alone. It’s a very tight and awkward space to try to create the force and angles needed.
If you got lucky and your engine was even 1/8” further offset from the frame, I think this could be as easy as the video shows. The difference is just that slim between easy and hard job.
Wow... I'm amazed how professional and efficient this is !
Thanks Andy for the info. Although I just completely rebuilt my Mini 20212 base cooper, the after market water pump seems to be leaking at the gasket. It was easy installing it with the engine out of the car. Now I have to do this with the motor installed. You do a great job of describing how, with what tools, and torques. Video is good because it shows me all the important steps. Just the right amount of info, not long and drawn out. I will be using an original Mini gasket this time. I read that someone else had to do the same with an after market pump and gasket. I think the pressure is fairly high in this car, causing a small leak along base of the water pump. I'll try to update this after it's all done... fingers crossed.

@@1AAuto Update: I changed the gasket. It leaks more now... BMW Mini original gasket was measurably thicker than the after market gasket. Using a metal ruler flat across the gasket, the after market gasket is difficult to see it higher than the flat edge of the pump. OEM gasket definitely compresses, so it's thicker, sealing better? I borrowed a radiator cap pressure system, and I now see it leaking at the tube coming in the back of the pump. I had rebuilt the motor, so I installed a new coolant tube while building the motor. Now I'm looking at replacing that again. Oh the joy of it... I can't wait to get it leak free. I also put 0.5mm larger pistons in, and I constantly get the P00BD Mass Air Flow Too high. Even Mini looked at it. After three MAF sensors, and other things, they said there's no problem. I really think it needs the computer numbers changed to know it has a bigger CFM (this equals more air drawn in!). The only way to get the Check Engine light to go off is let it idle for 35-40 min, then it lowers the average Air Flow measured Over Time (this is important). That removes the Pending and Permanent P00BD codes, allowing the Check Engine light to go off for one or two drive cycles. This allowed me to get through emissions inspection to license it. I know more about this car than I wanted to... but I love driving it! What a fun car.
+Kirk Reed Glad to hear you got everything working! Enjoy it!
@@KirkReed my mini Cooper 2007 is practically a death sentence. So fragile everything brakes etc. Very good looking but you can't rely on it. Shocking reliability. The water pump broke on this Peugeot engine and the reselling value is so low. I really don't know what to do.. If I repair it I'm sure something else will brake in 6 months.. It looks great (unlike all cars out there) and it's fun but it costed me so much money.
Great video to follow! However I removed just the intake/ throttle body Hard pipe and there is a line that is held on by a bracket under that near the top bolt of water pump, remove this as well and it’s gets you way closer to the top bolt and left side of pump easier. Helped me out a ton. Just be patient on removing and replacing the pump and pulley it is a very tight space but 100% do able without dropping the engine.
Big thank you to all of you for making all the great videos!

love how you cut and the pulley is out i can't get it to come out lol
Why you put a different pump?? Is the pump better than the other one? .. because my water pump is like the old pump and is my second pump leaking from the bottom plastic...is the normal to leak from the plastic bottom ?
it’s so much easier with the intake manifold removed, those top bolts so much easier to access and pulling the part out is smooth
Love this channels! Watch your videos everyday!!!

Great video, very professional. When I got my mini I really wasn’t interested in a new hobby but I do love my Mini.
def not done on the 2012 Coupe lol, it has been a pain, no ratchet reaches any bolt
It’s much easier if you remove the intake manifold as well. Gives you more access. And you can inspect the water pipe for leakage as well. Great video
is that hard to do? Ive sprung a leak back there somewhere and need to diagnose before ordering parts.
How did you brace the water pump pulley to loosen the bolts?
I used a large allen wrench to wedge the pulley into place. It takes forever to loosen the bolts little by little, but its the only way I was able to get it to stay well enough to break the bolts loose
another video where the water pump magically goes back in...
Do you need to reset the vehicle or anything like that? What if check engine light comes on
Hello there do u have a part # for those hose clamp pliers ??
thank you very much great video
What the hell are you prying to get the engine out of the way for removal
Never showed how to fit belt or tension ???????
Do any manufacturers make a metal version of this water pump. In the battle between plastic and metal.....metal is usually the winner.
Yes, there's a few brands of metal pumps with metal impellers. I found mine through ECS Tuning, I'm currently re-doing the entire cooling system on my 13' S.
Overall from beginning to end - how much time did it take?
+Danny Comsa The whole process can take anywhere from 2-3 hours. Hope this helps!
Bravissimo
I do not understand when you say pry the engine out a little bit with the crowbar. How are you doing that?
The motor mount is disconnected so once you do that the engine will drop a little bit and you can stick a pry bar in between the engine and frame and just pull or push and engine will move a little bit giving you the clearance to take out water pump polly and water pump itself
Can’t get that pulley out!!
Tough job!
+Beat Street Music Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I like this channel very much, but why that annoying music in the background? Without that "music" it would be perfect.
Wait! Was that water pump made completely out of plastic? Scotty Kilmer was right.
How accessible is the water pump from the top of the engine?
It isn't.
What he said.....
