    In my opinion the saddest part of this movie is the fact that Ennis cant even mourn Jack like a lover, he has to hide even after ending up alone which just breaks my heart. I love this movie its so beautifully shot and the casting is top notch!

    It's a shame that neither actor won an Oscar for their portrayal. Heath, well, he was in a league by himself. And, once again, Ang Lee gave us a masterpiece.

    The last scenes hit hard. His daughter trying a last time to include him, he almost pushed the last person who loves him away, solidifying his broken heart. The shirts on the nail and the picture of a better time now way gone for the rest of days.

    Ennis spent his entire life repressing his feelings and lost the one person that meant the most to him. Not many people talk about the scene just after they leave the mountain the first time and Ennis has a breakdown. To me, that scene hits hard because the reason behind it, and the fight they got into on the mountain just before they left, is because Ennis didn't want to leave. He made the excuse because he was losing a months pay, but what that really was that he was losing Jack. Its why he was literally acting like an antsy teenage girl waiting for her date to pick her up when Jack comes to see him four years later.

    I haven’t watched this since I saw it in the theater. When it came to the scene where Anne Hathaway is explaining how Jack died, I believe the visual is what actually happened which was why she confirmed on understanding why he wanted his ashes at Brokeback Mountain

      Agreed, I think her story is what she and her family came up with to tell other people. It's part of why her delivery there is so robotic.

    • @GullibleTarget
      @GullibleTarget Рік тому +9

      @@practicaldreamyrIn the book, the conversation is described through text and very descriptive. The movie uses visuals to carry the same situation. Jack was killed. When Lureen tells Ennis about what happened, her voice turns cold and distant. As if she is rattling off a prepared statement for the 100th time. When she uses certain terms in her story, Ennis realises she used the same terminology as when Jack once told him how "they take care of people", in Texas. It is vaguely implied that Lureens' father might have been involved.

    I still remember going to the theater to see this, and how controversial it was at the time. It was seen as a huge gamble for both Heath and Jake’s careers. If it came out today, I don’t think the reception would be met with such pessimism. BUT, it was still critically acclaimed. And it proves when the writing is good, directing is good and acting, it works out.

    When Jack says, "sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it", my goodness I felt that in my soul.
    This actually felt very cathartic to watch along side you both. I'm 3 months into losing the only person I have ever fallen in love with through a break up. It's been the worst pain but this helped me work through the motions again.

    It was a very moving movie. The story, likewise, was rich with imagery and sentiments. Unlike a lot of movies that get adapted from books, items weren't cut to fit in the time frame. The original story was short and had to be expanded upon. A single sentence or two in the story was expanded into whole scenes, and characters that were just mentioned casually in the story were fleshed out fully in the film. One great thing about the movie is that Ang Lee had faith in the story and let it tell itself without melodramatic tricks.

  • @LeoRichVids

    Great reaction!!! I first saw the actress, Roberta Maxwell, who played Jack Twist’s mother, in Mourning Becomes Electra (1978) on television. She is a fantastic actress and her work in this film, even though it was really short, perfectly conveyed the knowledge about her son and absolute fear of her husband all in her face.

I love how you point out a lot of the social aspects of what the characters were going through because of the time period. I feel like a lot of people miss that aspect of this movie when watching. In fact, sex between men was illegal everywhere in the U.S. in 1963 - except for Illinois, which passed the so-called "Consenting Adults Act" one year earlier de-criminalizing sex between men. It then took another 9 years before Connecticut did in 1971. Sadly, it took 32 years before SCOTUS invalidated all such laws remaining, primarily in the South.

    I admit, I had no interest in watching this film when it came out due to its subject matter. Though I don't consider myself homophobic, I did, sadly, have a homophobic reaction to it, something I'm not proud of. That said, when it aired on television one evening, I bit the bullet and watched it, and wouldn't you know, I enjoyed the film. The acting from the two main actors were amazing.

    I've watched Brokeback Mountain more than 10 time, and bawled like a baby every time, As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it breaks my heart every time. But I did feel so sorry for Alma, she didn't deserve that, now Lureen was another story . I didn't like her. I loved the score, ( I think I read that the whole score consists of just 6 chords ), loved the beautiful Wyoming scenery ( which was almost entirely the Canadian Rockies in Southern Alberta. Ang Lee won best director, the four leads were all nominated for the Academy Award, all lost, as did the picture, it lost to that piece of crap movie Crash. Just so you know just watching your reaction, had me bawling again. I think the Score won the Academy Award.
