    Seeing this in theatres with a whole bunch of queer people was such a beautiful and healing experience. It’s certainly nothing super groundbreaking but having a happy gay film where no one dies and the parents are awesome is so rare.
    I’m so glad you all enjoyed it and I hope you’ll consider reacting to even more queer media in the future.

      @user-es7ui5mc1m Рік тому +24

      Right? And imo at the time it did feel kinda ground-breaking... like it's not a masterpiece or anything but thinking back, there was so little rep in media (where queer kids were the main characters and the plot didn't center around their trauma) that having a "basic" movie but gay was such an experience

    • @RennyBQUEEN
      @RennyBQUEEN 10 місяців тому +3

      Actually I’d beg to differ. I think that considering most gay movies amount to soft core porn without the goodies and bad b,c,and d plots, this was kind of the start of mainstream GAY movies with a capital GAY. Not the first obviously; that’s likely Brokeback Mountain. But this one leads to several more. And it has a sequel. Love, Victor

    I read the book before the movie came out and I much prefer the book ending where Simon and Bram's kiss are more private. Feels more intimate and natural. Having it be public with all the cheering is just so weird lol.

      I think it’s very fitting that the book gives us a sweet intimate private exchange (as reading a book is a very individual personal experience) while the film gives a more fantastical grand gesture finale as is more traditional in movie romances. We get the best of both worlds.

    In the book Leah did like Nick and she talked about it with Simon, she was also AWFUL to Abby because she was jealous of Nick liking Abby. Simon thought she was helping and she was mad at simon was in regards to Simon messing with her and Nick's relationship. Leah liked Nick so much in the book she used to like make drawings and shit about him. She never reconciled the same way with Simon, and put distance with her and Nick once he started dating Abby. BUT in the sequel to the book (after the movie events) Leah is the main character and in an attempt to get back with her friends like before she started to try being friends with Abby and eventually fell for her. Abby was having issues with Nick too and trusting Leah. They eventually became a couple and even remained together when they went off to college. That's the one storyline i didn't like the movie changing. Giving her feelings for Simon kinda made it seem like she was putting some of her anger at him for not liking her back which felt weird. Whereas in the book (she wasn't a good friend either) but it made more sense because Simon used her actual real feelings for Nick as a plan rather than being considerate of her trust. Nick also didn't fall out with Simon after the truth was revealed in the book. In fact, they went to a gay club together lmaoo. And lastly, Cal (13 reasons why actor from the play) WAS queer (he was bi) and WAS interested in Simon. They had more little moments in the book. However when Simon asked if he was blue he said no, and while he had explicitly said he was interested in Simon, Simon had deeper feelings for Blue at this point so he rejected him. Just because the movie taking that storyline away also makes it feel more like Simon and Blue's relationship is based entirely on Blue being the only other gay guy at school apart from that other kid. But he wasn't. AAAAND Blue's race and religion play a bigger role in the book too, it was like an actual plot point how Simon never fully realised who blue was because for the most part he was thinking of a white christian guy, when it was a black non-christian guy (can't remember if bram was jewish or muslim in the book).

    I forgot how tense this movie made me feel. I remember watching this in the theater and hearing the mom say "When you were little, you were so carefree. But these last few years, more and more, it was almost like I can feel you holding your breath" she described my entire life with just that sentence alone. I remembered feeling like someone's hand was always wrapped over my mouth tightly anytime I tried to utter the word "gay". It literally made me so depressed I just did not want to be alive. Its one of the worse feelings in the world, but I'm so happy I learned to accept it and be myself. I've never felt the saying of a rock being lifted off of my shoulders until I came out. I love this movie It really captures the true feelings of the queer experience it really shocked me. (PS the burp part had me laughing 🤣)

    i really like this movie but one thing about it makes me so angry every time and that's his friends reactions. they make it all about themselves and not the fact that their friend was blackmailed and outted. how simon messes them was messed up, sure, but the 3 of them figure things out on their own and were totally fine yet their friend was isolated and outted against his will. tbh when someone comes out it's bad form to make it about yourself and that's exactly what leah and the other friends do (though abby's initial reaction was great!) ughhhhhhh I hate it. but the rest of it I really love so I tend to rewatch it a lot haha. I get them being angry, especially Abby, but the way they cut him off after they've had some time to think about it and Abby and Nick have got together anyway, they find out he's been blackmailed, they know he's been outed ... and the way they sit there and basically do nothing while he's targetted by bullies in front of the entire school and never even acknowledge any of it after? Argh.

    Beautiful, beautiful movie...
    I remember watching this for the first time on a flight to Vegas with relatives. The uncle that I used to live with at the time (100% straight, at least as far as I know 😄) was sitting right next to me, which made it very hard to emotionally react to some scenes, since as a gay and asexual person I was obviously touched by the movie but was still “living in the closet” (I hate that expression btw) and just wasn’t ready to come out (even though people knew.. people tend to almost always know, so if they react as jerks that’s just a testament to the evil in their hearts.)
    I was already entering my mid twenties when the experience of watching this movie in the plane happened. To make things even more interesting yet complicated, I was in love with a guy I saw on a weekly basis who maintained a 100% straight persona and yet started to show feelings for me and respectfully flirt. So, yeah: many people go into their twenties maintaining a fully straight image because that’s what the majority is or expects.
    Anyway, you guys are great! Every time I see guys who are supposedly 100% straight watch movies that are usually deemed girly or gay (as if those terms were derogatory, and thankfully we’re arriving at a day and age when they’re NOT derogatory terms) it warms my heart. There’s nothing more beautiful than men reaching that emotional maturity and respectfulness that society has been in deep need for centuries... probably even longer than that.
    Keep up the good work, guys! I love your channel. Btw: here are some fun movie recommendations of various genres that would make great reactions for the channel:

    This movie was such a tear jerker. Cause everyone struggles with having the feelings of being into same sex or being into both. It's not something you choose. I think people tend to forget that. Majority of all straight men has been curious or experimented as a teen or later on in life but it doesn't effect them because it was something to try or these days I know so many men with girlfriends and kids but still mess with guys on the low but they still consider themselves straight. This movie really touched me and it is phenomenal

    People probably missed it, but when Simon walks away at the lunch table to talk to Nick about Leah, Martin turns to Abby and says "What happens when you mix Black and Jewish...Blue-ish." Super subtle hint at the reveal, not sure how Martin knew or if he was just being Martin saying that.

    As a gay man, I was amazed when this movie came out and had a PG-13 rating and was being shown in theaters across the US. Normally the MPAA just automatically gives films with lead gay characters an R rating and the films get limited releases. I live in a mid-sized rural city and have had to drive hours away to either the nearest metropolitan area or nearest megapolitan area to specific theaters if I wanted to see other films with LGBTQ+ leads. Then the film did really well at the box office as well which made me happy because I took that as a sign that studios and the MPAA would be willing to make more films with LGBTQ+ lead characters as part of the stories. And I definitely enjoy the movie. My niece and several of her friends had already read the book the film is based on so they went to see the film on opening day in our rural city. She liked it so much that she kept on pestering me, her guncle, to go see it. Some friends and I went to see it and everyone enjoyed it, too….both on how real the characters seem and how real the story felt, especially for those of us who are LGBTQ+. This film has become a favorite to watch from time to time. It’s definitely among my favorite coming of age LGBTQ+ movies alongside Get Real and Beautiful Thing, among others. I’ve definitely watched this film about as many times as I’ve watched The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green….which is a comedy based on a comic strip that used to appear in LGBTQ+ newspapers across the country (including the one that was/is published in my state). It also has some celebrities in it in roles similar to Simon’s parents. And The Brokenhearts Club which stars celebrities like Dean Cain (who was starring as Clark Kent/Superman at the time on tv in the show Lois & Clark) and several others. Better Than Chocolate is a film that’s a favorite that my lesbian and bi/pan women friends and I enjoy watching together. Definitely has some great moments in it that make me laugh and cry. Anyways, I’m getting off track. I’m glad you reacted to this film and enjoyed it. It’s definitely considered a milestone for LGBTQ+ folks for both its wide release (instead of what was more common before it of limited releases) and it’s PG-13 rating (since prior to it an openly LGBTQ+ character in any lead role usually meant the film was rated R). And completely agree Jennifer Garner’s speech is just soooo good! Great reaction and commentary! Thanks for making and sharing this!!!

    Such a good movie and Zuff is right, the mystery of it keeps you on your toes. I've heard that the Jennifer Garner scene was kinda on the spot and she took it into her own hands... everyone literally feels the message and love with what she said...

    I watched this in the cinema with my step mum just after I came out as trans and it actually helped her accept me and my transition. I’m glad you enjoyed this as it’s a very important movie to me.
    Also you would totally love Heartstopper! It’s like this but English and way more wholesome and emotional.

    I’m so happy you guys watch this. This movie will always hold a special spot in my heart. Happy y’all really enjoyed this movie. Hulu made a spin off series to this movie which takes place a few years following events to love Simon. It’s called Love, Viktor. You guys might find it interesting.

    Aw, it's such a pleasure to have this movie reaction where it's the first time reaction for all three of you!! Especially because it's always fun to see people keep guessing on who Blue is till the very end haha. This movie does a REALLY good job with throwing you off with red herrings 😂 Like, I'd even read the book myself and knew that Blue was Bram going into the movie, but the film shook things up so much even I was doubting who Blue was going to be by the end lmao. Also, if it helps - Simon and Bram's get-together in the books was very private! They were still at the carnival, but it and just the two of them sitting on the curb (no school audience lol) and their first kiss was also private (just the two of them in the car in the rain)

    His name is Abraham, he shortens it to Bram :) I don't think it was in the movie but in the book he gave a hint about having the name of a past president.

    I loved this reaction. You are really good at anticipating twists so it was kinda nice to see you be happily surprised. Your reaction to his talks with both his parents had me in tears. And your reaction to Martin made me smile.
    I loved the movie and seeing this reaction reminded me of all the reasons why.
    This movie had so many strong moments but the one that hit me the most was the vice principal and the pride pin after Simon was outed by Martin. Such a little thing but so meaningful.

    I love watching your reactions to LGBTQ+ content. I have no idea what your sexual orientation is but I find it truly wholesome that your reactions are always so toxic-masculinity-free and just get that love is love and it doesn't matter.

    You're right that in the real world many people don't have the same rosy response when they come out to their parents. But it's still good to have a textbook response like this out in the ether, and hopefully it'll reach and imprint in the minds of the straight people who see this, so that when their friend, sibling, or child comes out to them, they would know the right things to do.
