She is a perfect example of how selective rationalism works. She's controversial in her field, had the misfortune of following research paths that led nowhere (twice), and has branched into science communication. And she was actually doing well... before starting to sub-branch into socio-political topics. That's where she should have realised she couldn't just read half a dozen articles and be done with it. But she didn't, and it's been a constant hit and miss that's destroying her reputation ever since.

Scientific research is 99.99% ticking off what is wrong. Actually stumbling into the right answer is very rare by the definition of how the scientific method works.
Painting the actual science of excluding false positives as "failure" is a consequence of the capitalist mindset and its frankly abusive relationship with science.
Capitalism is the reason she's miserable and is still here defending it... this is just sad. But not the first I've seem. There was a guy who wrote about videogames and programming who always criticized stuff about capitalism but defended capitalism itself. He died last year because of complications from untreated high blood pressure. It went untreated and undiagnosed for years, possibly decades, because he couldn't afford any measure of healthcare within the US. And he had 3 children to feed.

"And she was actually doing well..."
Scientifically speaking, this statement is 99.99999999% incorrect.
I make a pratice to frequently watch or listen to people I adamantly disagree with as a pragmatic pratice of reducing the bias of information I come across.
This being said of all the science communicators Sabrina is arguably one of the worst things to happen to science it's self.
You would litterlay be better off if you just watched a video of her chanting "status quo" habitually.
The information she presents in nearly every video isn't just blantanly wrong, inconsistent, and misleadingly; it's deliberately so and is often more confusing and condescending than it is educational.
Shes the type of "influencer" who eill superficially espouse casually how science is about being wrong out the gate; then spend the next 20 minutes confidently pretending any thing that is status quo is absolute truth; and anyone who questions this should be mocked or is a quack.
If she was simply a case if someone trying to communicate science without having a extensive background it would be one thing.
But shes supposed to be a established researcher and have a strong background in physics; yet in most videos related to thos topic cannot go 5 minutes without fundamental contradicting herself in a way that is anything but professional.
I'm not able to professionally make a diagnosis; but she shows strong characteristics of narcissistic personality dissorders, and this often serves to hinder new viewer's from asking deeper questions about subjects (Which we should allways welcome) or critically thinking for themselves; instead compelling them to just accept what she regurgitates and take it at face value.
Shes litteraly answers the question " what if falice argument from authority had a spirit animal".
It's not healthy to anyone to simply excuse this either.
Its ok for people and professionals in any feild to be wrong.
But the way we are wrong also matters, and she's the right example of how we shouldn't be wrong.
Toxic content like this can ONLY be consistently produced if one is internationally trying to troll others inorder to boost their popularity.
This same technique is becoming widespread in publications where researchers lile Avi Loeb publish like 500+ papers in over 10 yesr period, most of them empty regurgitative filler aimed at getting people to correct them in citations; but ultimately boost their rankings which have become a glorified popularity contest.

@@michaelgolfetto9619 "it's deliberately so and is often more confusing and condescending than it is educational."
On the store shelves growing up there were pop science books writing about bullshit hand-wavey "theoretical physics" ideas written in confusing and condescending ways to try to cover up a lack of understanding on their own part as writers. Lots of it was based on a completely inaccurate understanding of quantum mechanics used to hand wave their way into ridiculous claims. The inaccurate understandings became collectively understood myths in laypeople discussion, spreading like a virus. Sort of like the modern version of the "Physics says bees can't fly" meme.
Sabine appears to detest that kind of stuff and does a great job of cutting through it. The channel motto being "science without the gobbledegook" is fitting for those kinds of videos. I think it's a positive that a lot of current science communicators on youtube get into the weeds enough to despell the fake gurus and absurd "science" articles constantly popping up.
however, I agree that this venture into social topics is poorly executed and unfortunately perpetuating the stereotype that STEM people think they can quickly understand and fix political and social issues.

Like quite literally even in her own field there's such gross logically inconsistent errors that you don't really need a physics degree to spot; that she should not be allowed to be considered a professional by any means.
Unfortunately this is an extremely prevalent issue.
Physics has become a religion and people don't understand how flawed it is.
They continue to espouse and brian wash people with bad information telling them this is what experts like us know, don't question it.
Literally all she does is cite status quo arguments from authority without ever truly taking time to think for herself, and then asks you to do the same.

Funny thing is we *did* try to put a tax on CO2 emissions. It's called a carbon tax. Only, those efforts were first delayed by fossil fuel companies covering up the existence of climate change (because of capitalism) and then prevented governments from implementing any kind of carbon tax (because of capitalism) through lobbying and such. We have had plenty of time to implement these capitalist solutions to this capitalist problem, yet the capitalists are the ones preventing even these patchwork 'solutions' from being implemented. Why do we have a system that regularly causes immense amount of harm to massive amounts of people, then actively prevents actual solutions from being implemented and then resists any change and government intervention that might prevent further harm? Maybe we should have a system that just.. like... doesn't do that? One that represents the needs of everyone, and not just the smallest percentage of the population that holds the most power?

@sasho_b. Capitalism is succesful because of structural reasons. It is the system that optimizes the efficiency in the allocation of labour and capital, period. No system is better at natural optimization than capitalism.
The strong point is that everything is based on natural mutual interests and symbiotic relations. Not idealism or expert planners(who can never take everything into account). Negative feedback loops balance out supply & demand for example.
The thing that makes it controversial is that sometimes overall efficiency can come at tremendous costs for a select group of people. As a society you can decide to trade optimal solutions to reduce the fallput for these groups. That is up to every democracy to decide and balance.

    • @dekippiesip
      @dekippiesip 9 місяців тому

@2koi516 in Europe, at least a lot of the wasted food has to do with EU subsidies for farmers. They produce more food than needed because of this, so that is actually government intervention.
As to the food thrown away by individuals like you and me. Well, that's our own stupidity as consumers. I'm sure we both waste food now and then, simply by letting things expire on accident. That's not really a systemic issue.
Delaying and drawing out work actually makes you less competitive. If I delay too much, then competitors will eventually outcompete me. Especially the government is notorious for this, and they obviously aren't incentivized by market forces. The bureaucracy you refer to is also a lot worse in countries with a bigger and more active government like France.
Most of the other things in your list are the result of regulations, laws, and bureaucracy. While necessary to some extent in every country, the more you have them, the less capitalist your system actually is. I don't see them as a product of capitalism. They are a cost associated with the regulation capitalism.

Speaking as someone who has worked in a lab, though not a researcher myself, its all publically funded. The only significant R&D done by private companies is done under government contracts.
Something that most people don't realise is that research pisses away money at an unbelievable rate.
It also takes a lot of time, and the near endless dedication of the scientists working on the project. Their work ethic is truly admirable, especially considering their working situation. My university has decided that grad students, which most university scientists are, are "contractors" so they aren't obligated to pay things like worker's comp.
In a chem lab, accidents and injuries will happen. Especially when a lot of these scientists aren't the most...practically minded folk.
In the project I was part of, the government is essentially funding development until it can be proven to be profitable enough, at which point it will be handed off to a private company. So they can keep the profits that tax money and public employees developed. Seems fair.

The notion that “capital” can only come from private investors is pretty ignorant of all of the public investment that’s happened over the past couple centuries.
Think of the robber barons. They accumulated their wealth through the construction of railroads and their attendant industries. They built those railroads on land that was given to them by the government (which the government stole from natives, but that’s a different story). The ultimate source of their wealth was capital which the government provided, not private investors who saw the potential in their ideas. If the robber barons had been required to purchase all of their land through the free market, then their railroads would not have been profitable and they wouldn’t have received the private investment to get the project off the ground.

As a fellow particle physicist... Sabine has long been a bit controversial with her peers (for physics reasons), which has gotten worse lately. She's increasingly known for her transphobic opinions (she had a major video in that regard over summer). And she's also increasingly known as the 'particle physicists are all liars about dark matter, except me.' The long story short is that she thinks that dark matter as the solution to the mass-acceleration discrepancy is the wrong answer, sides with the gravity solution side while making up evidence that supposedly disproves dark matter, ignoring the substantial concordance of evidence pointing towards dark matter, acting as though the fact that we haven't detected dark matter outside of gravitational interactions isn't the biggest topic of study in the field, and then ignoring the very serious problems that have kept any modification of gravity working to answer the question. All while turning around and all but disparaging her supposed colleagues for being idiots or liars. She's dangerously close to leaving physics and entering into crank territory, so no, at this point you don't have to assume she's a very knowledgeable person on other matter.
I couldn't watch past the barter part of her video, so I'm glad that Hakim has done a break down. I can't believe she actually put up a common character of a smoking, monopoly man capitalist and was like, "yep, he's good!" JFC: "Capitalism has been enormously successful" and has "laissez-faire" up on the screen. I guess that makes sense if she's one of those older Germans that still wants the French erased from existence and thus views the reign of terror in the French revolution as a positive.
It's not just that she thinks capitalism is the end all and be all, but that science is and that science=progress. This is a unfortunately still quite prevalent amongst scientists, particularly older scientists, and is a much older, ahistorical understanding of science. Older as in, eugenics and colonial thinking. No need for ethics, we have ~science~. No need to use other modes of understanding (E.g. history), we have ~science~. 'We get to decide what happens because we are the ones technologically superior and thus morally superior. If you don't like us taking your resources, you are morally wrong and our military will be justified in putting you down'. Or 'Can't quantify the problem (like clean water)? Well, us science hippies can't understand it, so it must not be an actual problem and we can move forward with technocratic destruction'. Not surprising she's gone on podcast by people like Lawrence Krauss, who has been pretty much excised from most physics and skeptics spaces because of serious sexual assault/attempted rape allegations (allegedly, which he denies and is known to be litigious about it).
Just another arrogant blowhard physicist, who are unfortunately a dime a dozen.

Thanks for this post. My knowledge of particle physics and cosmology and the like is on the level of a semi-literate layperson, who grew up reading the likes of Carl Sagan and Stephen Jay Gould. (Gould >>>>> Dawkins) So when she started showing up in my Recommends due to my interest in science, I was intrigued by her opinions about dark matter. Then when I saw the titles of her videos on trans I could tell where they were going and decided to come back when I was in the mood to be infuriated (which I still haven't); I later saw a video from Rebecca Watson responding to that & decided that was good enough for me. And then I saw her "Capitalism is Good" title and decided okay, I'm done.
When someone who knows a lot more about something than I do speaks confidently about that thing, it can be quite convincing. When they start talking about stuff I'm more confident in my knowledge about, that aura dissipates.
So it's reaffirming to see someone who knows about the physics say "yeah, she's full of shit about that too".

Sabine is a UA-camr, and confidently pushing for a "I have secret knowledge _they_ don't want you to think about" seems pretty standard conspiracy theory / cult of personality material. So I have to wonder if there's a feedback effect going on here: being a wacko gives her followers and thus income and a yes-men bubble which in turn gives her incentive to become more extreme and, since physics-based conspiracy theories have a pretty limited audience, eventually a reason to branch out.

It argued that trans women having some sort of physical advantage over cis women doesn't actually mean that we should ban them, accurately pointing out that we allow people like Michael Phelps to compete in sports despite having an absurdly advantageous physiology for swimming. Now I think it was too accepting of the premise that "trans women have an advantage over cis women", whatever this means (as I understand it, more science still needs to be done, and moreover while the average trans woman who has gone through male puberty and undergone three years of HRT may be predisposed towards better athletic performances than SEDENTARY cis women, these advantages disappear or are cancelled out when you compare them to high performance cis women athletes because high performance athletics selects for people who have "biological advantages" over everyone else).

Hence why I got weird vibes from it. vibes that appeal to crackpots who think have found a theory of everything "that proves Einstein is wrong and all of Physics is wrong" and that they deserve a nobel for it.
Im sure she's done other shit (lmao example being presented in this video) but this is what triggered my spidey senses back then.

Jesus, their "invisible hand" metaphysical bullshit. As David Harvey said:
"This is strange because you really wanted to see Marx kind of departing from Adam Smith, not saying "I accept the hidden hand of the market", that's what he does in chapter two of volume one, he says "I accept the hidden hand of the market", and of course what he's going to do is to say that the hidden hand is the hand of the laborer, that's what he does further down the line.
The interesting thing about this is that whenever you ask any kind of conventional economist what do they think of Marx's labor theory of value, they'll say "well it's just a mystical kind of thing you know, it just happens you know, nobody can take that seriously", and than you say to them "well what about the hidden hand? Isn't that a mystical thing?", and they go "well no, that's the market, you know, that's the way the market is", and you say "why should I think of a market as being a hidden hand?".
And you have a little argument of that kind and it turns out the hidden hand is just as mystical as Marx's theory of value, if not more so because Adam Smith does not say who's hidden hand it is, whereas Marx is definitely saying "well it's the hidden hand of labor that you've got to be looking at here", and the fact that Adam Smith ignored what was happening to laborers for the most part..."

And most of the population are already home owners so they love when property values skyrocket and they make all of the rules. This video however struck me as odd, as she aims it towards people who are anti-capitalist, but only uses arguments have been since long debunked or are simply subjective. Not once did she bring up the well-being and happiness of people as a whole, which to me is one of the most important things we should strive towards.

in my economics intoductory course i learned about free market economics but also how it is flawed (environmental economics, modernization theory…)…I‘d think that an established academic knows how nuanced science really is (although this isn‘t natural science) and would only speqk about things they‘d actually understand on a fundamental level…

    • @86Corvus
      @86Corvus 9 місяців тому

On a fundamental level its not nuanced. Thats what the fundamental level means and cretins here have trouble grasping basic fundamentals of supply and demand and free trade leaving both parties happy by allowing both people acquiring of items and services they can do themselves or would be inefficient at making themselves for the price of trading off things they can do without and would much prefer to have those goods and services they cant to or are inefficient at...
Price negotiation allows for those deals to balance at a level perceived as acceptable for both parties tehrefor making those deals not only less painful and fairer to both but a lot of the time possible at all.
In a fixed pricing economy if the price is incorrect, and it quickly becomes so because its not attached to any real boots on the ground economic reality but to a theorized modeling based on most often incorrect data reports in a system which benefits from reporting good sounding fictional data than proper data and a system which doesnt account for any other factors but those which can be gathered by reports which is data delayed in time and actual current conditions on the ground... - the pricing has no chance of being accurate and therefor either enforces losses and ineficiency by making factories produce unwanted items or items of poor quality or stops trade at all due to unfavorable pricing...
Just because a system is not perfect doesnt mean its not way fucking better than communism. Communism is the definition of ineficiency and cleptocracy. A complete and utter monopoly of the government on all resources, property and yes - even people. It changes countries into open sky prison camps.
