  • This is two scenes from the West Wing, Season 2, Ep. 8, "Shibboleth," in which President Bartlet explains to his staff what "shibboleth" means, and then when he meets a Christian Chinese refugee, of whom he asks a test of faith.

      I'm an atheist whose eyes dampen over this scene also. Whatever these people are or aren't, they are Christian, and in America, that entitles them to certain rights. The fact that they themselves aren't American doesn't completely mitigate those rights.

    The actor playing the refugee did a really good job delivering his lines. At first, the answers he gives sound as though they are memorized but then he breaks into proving his faith is not false. Really great writing by Sorkin and acting.

      @@renevanwijk9653 he is talking about the subtle nuance written into the script and how well it is brought to light by the actor. Sorkin is all about rhythm, cadence even in the most subtle passages. The refugee gave President Bartlet the initial answers as rote because that is how Sorkin wrote it and it is what we were led to expect during the prior exchange with staff. When the refugee shifted from subserviently answering questions from the man who would decide his fate, to boldly asserting his faith...speaking truth to power, he was transformed from a simple refugee to the spokesman for religious injustice.
      It was a powerful scene, executed flawlessly by the cast.

    I had to write a paper on computer security in college, and I used the story in Judges to illustrate that using something to prove membership in a group didn't start with the computer age--that the concept was thousands of years old. It was something I already knew, but it was something that I had forgotten. John Milton's - "It's better to rule in hell than to serve in Heaven". It served the point of my paper well. But, my professor made a note in the paper that essentially accused me of plagiarism. I won the battle, but still got a B on the paper. Best wishes, Ted

    While the main focus is about faith and religion, I feel that there's an even deeper message in this, once that puts Bartlett in his place.
    *President Bartlett:* Can you name any of Jesus' disciples? If you can't, that's okay. I usually can't remember the names of my kids, or for that matter...
    *Jhin-Wei:* Peter, Andrew, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, Thaddeus, Simon, Judas and James. Mr. President, Christianity is not demonstrated through a recitation of facts. You're seeking evidence of faith, a wholehearted acceptance of God's promise for a better world. 'For we hold that man is justified by faith alone' is what St. Paul said. 'Justified by faith alone.' Faith is the true... uh, I'm trying to... shibboleth. Faith is the true shibboleth.
    Bartlett is an extremely intelligent man, an educated man with decades of studying under some of the greatest learning institutions in the world. He is proud that he is smart, that he's a brainiac, and he looks down on people who would throw an education away willingly.
    However, this was a perfect lesson for him that not everything in life, especially the most important and powerful things, has to be understood rigorously, to be identified and known.
    Bartlett may know the Bible inside and out, but Jhin-Wei's belief, anyone's belief, is no less than his if they have faith.
    Thankfully, he realizes that at the end.

    • @nigelft
      @nigelft 7 років тому +38

      Thagor 85 True, it isn’t...
      But that wasn't the point. As Josh pointed out, often Chinese refugees would be coached to 'feign faith'. So it wasn't so much that the Chinese professor could pronounce 'shibboleth' correctly, but rather he understood both the concept, and the principal, behind it ... one can recite as many bibical verses as you may, but without understanding what they mean, that is just so much empty words ... the true 'shibboleth' was showing what his faith truly meant for him, and that was the test he passed.

      The whole scene is pretty horrible. What if nobody in the group was a highly educated, well spoken English-speaker. What if he had over-focused on demonstrating his factual knowledge because realistically, you don't really talk back to a person with that much power over you, you just try to please them.
      Or for that matter, what if they were actually persecuted and in great danger for other reasons, but told pleading faith-based was their best bet and went with that.
      EDIT: well I thought that's not how I remembered it, looked up the ending to the episode, and yeah, he gives a lovely little speech about how he wouldn't have sent them back anyway. It's really sweet, and also everything that's wrong with this vision of how government should function. No urgent need to change unjust structures, massive inequalities, give powerless people more rights - it'll be ok because the leader is a good and wise man.

    Faith folks not faith plus works. We are saved solely by the work of Christ on our behalf. His death and His resurrection are the works that save us. We receive our Savior by faith (John 1:12), through faith alone Acts 16:31; Romans 3:28; 4:5; 5:1; Galatians 2:16; 3:24; Ephesians 1:13; and Philippians 3:9.
    Paul says those who have true faith in Jesus Christ will be “eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:14). To return to Ephesians 2, immediately after teaching that we are saved through faith, not through works (Ephesians 2:8-9), Paul says that we were created “to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Salvation comes by God’s grace through faith, and that faith is made manifest in good works. The works follow the faith and are a proof of it.

    • @bootyman234
      @bootyman234 9 років тому +9

      almonious Or Yeah, because quoting scripture is a definite indication of... what...exactly? That fairly tale bullshit has no place in government and has had no globally positive effect on the way we interact or treat one another. there is nothing but division!
      P.S. Both bush and Obama claim to be people of faith, or Christian, or what ever the latest PR acceptable title is.

    • @almoniousor3112
      @almoniousor3112 9 років тому +1

      I get what you're saying, although I'm not sure why quoting the bible is bad in itself. Why should it cause division? it is not as if we're trying to create a unified, uni-thought, humanity.. there is place for all.
      I seem to recall Obama even hiring one of the writers.

    • @bootyman234
      @bootyman234 9 років тому +1

      almonious Or Its not that I feel quoting scripture is negative, its just that in ANY work environment, doing so does not take into consideration the possible differences in ideology of the other employees. Its just not the place to do it. I don't trust people who come across as too holier than thou anyway. And why should it cause division? because that is what religion has done, and its common knowledge to anyone paying attention. I would also ask, who is the "we" with regard to your uni-thought humanity statement? If all people of faith did in fact hold their ideals above all else, then logic dictates that there would be more cohesion among them than there is. As far as the writer Obama allegedly hired, what does this person write? and why did you include him in your BushObama accusation if his hiring of said writer somehow exonerates him?

    • @almoniousor3112
      @almoniousor3112 9 років тому +2

      Religion didn't cause that, in my opinion. People caused that. People can take anything and create hell on earth with it.. just check Soviet communism, where religion was illegal.
      Look how my original comment made you answer, I feel there is violence in your words, disqualification and destruction. What is BS about the scene in this clip?
      If it makes you feel more at ease, he may quote a classic philosopher, or any book whose wisdom stood the test of times.
      to say that people have failed to follow this or that, tells about the people, and no one is perfect. And even then, people did, do and will make mistakes. It is how they correct and improve that tests them, in my opinion.

    • @bootyman234
      @bootyman234 9 років тому +1

      almonious Or You seem to be struggling with the concept of cause and effect. Yes it is the people that are responsible for the division, but it is their belief systems incompatibility that is the catalyst. And the bullshit I was referring to had nothing to do with the clip, it was directed at religion in general.
