  • In this episode, I want to review the first few paragraphs of The Mammaries of the Welfare State by Upmanya Chatterjee, a sequel of the hugely successful English, August.
These paragraphs paint an accurate and hilarious picture of the life and world of Agatha Sen, an IAS officer being transferred to a Western province of the country.
He is surrounded by imbeciles and is always unhappy, constantly horny, and embroiled in meaningless battles over turf.
To get this picture of hopelessness and stagnation across, Chatterjee uses words like "placidly", "snugly", "stimulating" and "lighting" to showcase an unchanging world where the biggest victories are over decrepit sofas and wooden benches.
These opening paras are a great example of a masterful storyteller at work. Hope you are able to learn something from them to build your own world and tell better stories.
