Oh, how I love this man! How I thrilled to his fights all those years ago! When he was in school he never learned how to spell 'defeat'. And how I love some of the brilliant men he defeated: Jersey Joe, Ezzard and Archie ..... what class acts they were.
Marciano COULD NOT be beaten: he'd find a way to overcome ANYONE.

Rocky punched like he had lead shot in his gloves, just these thudding heavy fists that reverberated through his opponents, he's style probably wouldn't work so well nowadays as the sport (and world) has come on so far but he was a real gent and a humble champ, qualities that are sadly rare now. All these years later and never forgotten. R.I.P Rocky.

    ..broke bones and blood vessels.
    Champ from 1952-1956...49-0 43 KO's.

Well here's some real Classy stuff Jimbo: ..While stationed in England, Marciano and a fellow soldier named James Murphy robbed two Englishman, brutally beating them up in the process. He was released after 22 months and then allowed to rejoin the military for the duration of 1946 in order to receive an honorable discharge.
After Marciano abruptly quit boxing during his prime he immediately abandoned his family to sleep with thousands, then left them penniless. What a soab (Classy guy though).

I respect both boxers. Rocky died in a plane on his way to give a speech, they had a surprise birthday for him too cause on that day it was his birthday, it's sad seeing a birthday turn into a funeral and that's just sad. Ali in his early 20s to his late 50s was so mobile and agile, until he developed the parkinson disease, he was told that in this condition he would never fight again. God bless both of them, true legends.

got the most out of what he had...fought and beat the best of his time...that's all a fighter can do...the man was a force of nature....top weight of 189 pounds...hit like a much bigger man....broke bones and bloodvessels....my favorite fighter of all time...put him in the ring with anyone!

Marciano fan-atic's describes him as being so fierce that he basically killed all 49 of his opponents in the ring. "Rocky almost killed Carmine Vingo," well Mancini killed Kim yet nobody constantly brags about that like Rocky lovers do with Vingo. Y'all have all these Marciano vids so saturated with such bombastic exaggerated hyperbolic comments that it's laughable. Especially about Rocky's power and those supposed 13 forced retirements.
But what y'all fail to ever mention is that LaStarza with all his "Broken Bones" and "Ruptured Blood Vessels" simply had minor surgery and fought exactly 6 months later.
Exactly who's eye sockets, jaws, ribs, bones did little Rocky break???
WAITING---TIC--TOC--TIC--TOC ...The correct answer is,, "NOBODY"!!!!
LaStarza simply had tiny miniscule bone chips removed from his elbow just like David Tua did after his fight against Ibeabuchi. That's normal boxing injuries.
Here's the newspaper article about Layne's tooth: "Rex Layne lost a left upper tooth..the tooth broke at the gums when Marciano caught the Utahn in the mouth with a full right hand. Layne was taken immediately after the fight to a New York dentist to have the teeth X-rayed and also for treatment on a broken tooth." Layne's handlers said, "the tooth went out with the gumshield."
Rex Layne sustained one (1) broken tooth and fought exactly 3 months later!!!
Now witness a modern Rocky fanboy comment: "He punched out almost every tooth in Rex Lyne's mouth and sent his gum guard into the crowd. It take massive power to do that. If Layne was 6'6 240+ it wouldn't of made any difference." {Perfect example how misinformation builds up over decades}.
From what I've read Marciano broke 1,247 bones, knocked out 4,679 teeth and ruptured 792 blood vessels. I also know for a fact that little rocky is god , because when he walked the earth shook.

Rocky's numbers may not lie, but numbers minus context can easily lead to distortion. So let's examine his 13 opponents that he supposedly forced into retirement instantaneously:
First, we know for certainty why Joe Louis retired. Joe was only back because the IRS forced him to, and as soon as they took his purse for fighting Rocky, he was out of there for good.
Walcott retired because he was ready for retirement. He only returned for Marciano-2 because of that Huge $250K payday. Marciano only received $166K. Walcott received the lions share both fights. Had Walcott continued fighting he would have only received a fraction of that. He had no choice but to retire. $250K back then is $2.6 million today. Rocky never retired Joe,, he QUIT.
Lee Savold age was 36 with 153 bouts. His manager, Bill Daily, asked referee Pete Tomasso to stop the uneven match at the end of the sixth round. "The will was there but not the body," said Daily. "I'm going to advise Lee to retire Tomorrow." Lee didn't even throw a punch at Rocky, he basically stood there like heavy punching bag. Washed Savold was only there for his last Big paycheck.
Lee Epperson and Jimmy Weeks were both Debuting with 0-0-0 records when they faced Rocky. Shameful to even count these two as forced retirements.
John Edwards only had 2 fights, a win and a loss, when he faced Marciano. Y'all gonna count this one also?
Obese 254 lb Humphrey Jackson was a lousy 4-2 Journeymen when he faced Marciano. He never beat a winning fighter. It only took 0:34 seconds for Humphrey to be KO'd in his first fight, and 1:28 in his last fight. The less said about bummy Jackson the better.
Jimmy Evans was 18-7 , 178 lb light heavyweight Journeymen in a five year career when he quit.
Harry Haft was 12-7 Journeymen when he took on Marciano. Harry was 5' 9" 174 lb light heavyweight. Shake my head.
Gino Buonvino was 24-15 with an 8 year dubious Journeymen career.
Eldridge Eatman was 22-21, with a 12 year Journeymen career when he fought Rocky. "Eatman proved no opposition for Marciano", according to the Providence Journal, "Marciano hit Eatman with a right in the 3rd round, and Eatman went down after that, though it didn't appear he was hit." Another perfect $$Take-a-Dive$$ undercard C-Level 12 year Journeymen with 50/50 record!
Pete Louthis was 32-13 when he fought Rocky. Pete only had 35% KO percentage. Louthis fought Willie James with a 0-0-0 debut record,, only 2 fights before facing Marciano. Pete fought 10 men with 0-0-0 records. He was 100% mafioso controlled!
Carmine Vingo was 16-1, and the only medically confirmed legitimate retirement due to Marciano. Carmine ended up partially paralyzed but ended up living a long (86 years) happy life.
It appears the majority had journeyman undercard records and simply QUIT (unless u can produce more medical documentation similar to Vingo's). There may have been other reasons like taking too many other previous beatings for such low pay, but you decide. Generally speaking the mafioso factually controlled every aspect of boxing during the worst heavyweight boxing era of all time , the small 1950s.

This guy, did his business in the ring with respect for his opponent, unlike that big mouthed Ali who with all respect, if his trainer hadn't cheated when he fought Cooper, our "Enry" would have beat. Rocky? Priviledge seeing you fight. Thankyou.

A hugely under-rated aspect of Marciano's greatness is the fact he developed into a truly ambidextrous puncher, under Goldman's tutelage his left hand became dynamite(as you can see when he practically lifts Harry Matthews of the canvas. Combined with his right(Still the hardest punch on record, Rex Layne's front teeth sheared off his gums, Lee Savold's sent back into them, Round 13 vs Walcott etc...) then you have the most formidable power in the history of the sport, he was awesome.

  • @dempsey981

this guy to me is the definition on how to punch correctly.thats where that great power partially comes from.he falls into the shot, great whirl from the shoulders,straight...explosive.watch his shoulders whirl side to side with the punches, this creates great power.its no fluke this guy hurts people,he punches perfect!

A lot of you probably know a bunch about Rocky Marciano but I've watched every single documentary and special on Rocky and even researched everything I could find on him on the internet. The reason why I think he could beat almost anybody is because of his mental and physical toughness. He trained like a Spartan/Gladiator and had the punching power of Foreman if not stronger. He threw an average of 80-100 punches a round!!! his opponents threw 45-50!!!!!!! Rocky is definitely one of a kind

Rocky was one great fighter, but The Greatest we will never know. I know Marciano has his detractors, but the truth is there are just as many people who underestimate him as there are that overestimate Rocky as a fighter. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in between, but there's no denying Rocky's greatness, just his level of greatness.

thank you very much. It was a great experience putting this one together. He was amazing. I am in my 30's and have been a boxing fan since I was a teenager. I saw my first Marciano fight on video with my dad. I watch in disbelief, while Rocky fought with his nose ripped in half. 99% of fighters would have stopped, but rock went on to when the fight. I saw his heart and will to win, and everything I have seen in boxing since then makes me know, there will never be another fighter like him.

Rocky Marciano is the best Boxer ever. If you know boxing, you'll know Marciano is the best in the world.

Agreed, but never overlook the fact that for all his "lack of pugilistic science" he was a devilishly difficult man to hit. That's class. A fighter's fighter? Yes, and a hero's hero. Marciano would have beaten ANYONE.

I was amazed by some of the facts about him. Marciano's punch was tested and it was featured in the December 1963 issue of Boxing Illustrated: "Marciano's knockout blow packs more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and represents as much energy as would be required to spot lift 1000 pounds one foot off the ground"
    That some power!!!!!

For all the people who say he couldnt last a round with Tyson, Ali, etc. Are seriously mistaken. This guy was all heart and a piece of Italian- American steel that couldnt be worn down....

The man was way ahead of his time. His training methods are something that should be looked into by modern heavy's today. I rate him in the top three of all time. Any douche bag that brings up tysons name in the same sentence with this legend doesn't know boxing at all.

In this video, when Marciano knocked Jersey Joe out in the corner on the right side of the ring, Jersey Joe said that was the hardest he had ever been hit.
Before one of his fights, his opponent was really talking him down and the interviewer asked Rocky what he had to say about it. Rocky held up his fists and said, "I let these do my talking for me."
There's no doubt, Rockey was the greatest.

You're right. ppl talk about what other guys could do against the poorer skills of Rocky but they forget that NOTHING could stop the Rock. No fancy footwork, no repeated combos, no dynamite shots, no dancing and running. Marciano fought the best of those types and didn't just defeat them, he battered them until they looked like they were wearing masks. He smashed fighters' teeth off, burst blood vessels in their arms. Rocky was a walking barrage of iron pistons, indefatigable.

There are some fighters, like Rocky Marciano, Fedor Emelianenko... they don´t fight with their hands, but fight with their hearts... and that makes them undefeatable...

Rockey cried when he beat his hero, Joe Louis. Then he apologized to Joe. Rockey had a lot of what is mostly missing with today's fighters; he had class.
