  • On an absolute scorcher of a day on the Isle of Purbeck, myself and Matt took a trip to the Swanage Railway, where we visited some new locations and both gathered footage for our various upcoming projects.
    Locomotives:
    - Ex-SR "U" Class no. 31806
    - Ex-LSWR "M7" Class no. 30053
    - BR Class 37 no. 37518*
    - BR Class 33 no. 33025*
    * - operating the Wareham service.
    All footage filmed on 27/08/2017

I was never a lover of Southern locos back in the days of steam but I loved your video, especially the growls from the 33 & 37. The Southern livery was a joy to see. Thank you.

Query: Do you know why locos sometimes pull their carriages facing backwards, instead of the normal forwards-facing position?

      Yes, that's indeed Corfe Castle.
The reason for the loco facing the carriages, is that most railways don't have a turntable, so the locos can't be turned. Therefore, to get back to the other end of the line, they have to be coupled with the "front" of the loco pointing inwards. It's called the "run-round" procedure.
