- As has become tradition, the Swanage railway held their annual Winter Warmup, one of the last events of the years in the railway calendar.
Waking up the Purbecks in the run-down from Christmas, the event sees a variety of motive power taking on both passenger and freight workings.
The lineup for 2017 was as follows:
- ex-SR "U" Class, no. 31806
- ex-LSWR "T9" Class, no. 30120
- ex-LMS Ivatt class "2MT" tank, no. 41312 (Visiting from the Watercress Line)
- BR Class 33, no. D6515 "Lt. Jenny Lewis RN"
Of notable absence is the line's long-time stalwart, LSWR M7 no 30053, which was withdrawn for overhaul earlier in 2017.
Despite fighting a camera which seemed to want to do the exact opposite of what I asked of it, the event provided some spectacular scenes, with steam hanging in the air and varying weather throughout the day.
All footage filmed on Thursday 28th December 2017.

Fantastic video, best I have seen in a long long time. Loved the shot of 41312 on the goods getting away from Corfe Castle, 30120 at Harmans Cross coming through on the Goods was another great shot too, fabulous to watch. Liked the shot of 41312 coasting when dusk is approaching too, also 31806 at the bridge backwards nice angle! Thoroughly enjoyed this video!
Thanks very much, it's comments like that which keep me making videos! Much appreciated!
Nice to see, as compensation for the autumn gala being cancelled, and great to see the old T9 in action again.
Thanks - it was a nice little event, not too busy but plenty of variety.
I see no evidence of a fight with the camera! Makes a change to see something nicely paced with good steady shots and good sound quality.
Thanks Bill - it was the zoom rocker that seemed to suddenly act up on a few shots. Thanks for the compliments, although my videos are quite simplistic usually, I pride myself on the sound quality because, for me, it can make or break a video.
Brilliant video as ever - they seem to be more 'meaty' leaving Norden as ever (probs just me). Keep up the great work!
Thanks Ben, they always look good coming out of Norden in the cold.
Great video as ever once again the cold crisp air working wonders for the steam. I bet you was in need of a warm beverage when you had finished. From what i have seen looks as though the T9 will be a swanage resident from now on.
kinetic .rail Thanks very much! It was a great event, some lovely steam scenes all day. Yes by the end of the day I was definitely in need of something warm! That’s good news about the T9, hopefully means I’ll get to see it more.
Have to take your word for it on the camera problems, as the result displays brilliant video, audio and editing! Definitely 'made', not 'broken', thanks, Bob.
Thanks very much Bob, too kind. :)
Marvellous! My favourite scene is of 41312 at dusk (15:32+) very atmospheric, rising moon at dusk etc.
Thanks Craig, I really liked that particular scene too.
