Behind the Scenes and POV of Hex - The Legend of the Towers

- POV video with working lights of Hex - The Legend of the Towers, the Vekoma Mad House at the Alton Towers Resort, and a simultaneous view of the outside of the vault. Taken during the behind-the-scenes tour as part of the Th13teen Evening on Saturday 19th June 2010.
Took ages to synchronise the two videos of inside and outside the vault, as it's incredibly difficult to tell when the drum is turning, and when the swing is turning, which is entirely the point of the ride! I'm confident I've got it right, though - on both raw clips, there are loud clicks at the beginning and end of the ride (the drum being unlocked/locked), which I used to match the clips .
Footage was recorded on my compact camera, hence it's not the best in the world - bit shaky. Also, this is my first ever project in Adobe Premiere - was fun! Hope people feel the finished product is good.
Comment away!
Love the effects of this ride making you feel as if your going upside down
The simplicity of a rocking ride inside a spinning room with lap bars to aid the trick is so cool and a fantastic effect - my 4yr old loved this as it really hyped his imagination
I went on this years ago, and had memories of the now long gone Thunderlooper at Alton Towers. This looping rollercoaster had just a rubbish little bar that loosely fell across your lap, only leaving centrifugal force to keep you in your seat. So, Hex's more solid lap bar in place, I genuinely believed that Alton Towers had absolutely no qualms about dangling their customers by a bar. The first time I went on Hex, I subsequently braced myself like a sailor in a crowsnest during a hurricane. I leaned so hard into the bar, that I managed to really hurt my hip. I was absolutely shaking afterwards along with half my friends. Only after learning the secret did I work out if I just relax, then the ride was disorienting, but totally painless. Recently, I took my son on it. He was just unimpressed, and had guessed the mechanism immediately. Its a marmite ride.
Skeptic Psychologist It's so much better now with the new version
Skeptic Psychologist I love it. Plus the tree is very real. The tree lives just down the road from alton towers along a dirt path. It’s the only tree with Steps up to it.
Can you imagine going on this thing pissed?
Considering it's in Staffordshire a) I'd imagine many locals in there would be pissed and b) I'd want to be pissed in to forgetting that I'm actually in Staffordshire.
I went on Oblivion once and a guy two seats to the left of me was clearly drunk. He spewed at the top before the drop even happened and I can tell you the lady sat in-between us was not happy. Her white trousers were ruined.
It doesn't actually go upside down or swing that far back and forth. Just the room that spins upside down not the chairs.
The chairs swing back and forward. Like at the start, the speed of the room matches the speed of the seats swinging.
Yeah both the chairs and the room move.
Generic Account Yes that’s what I said.
Danielle Dewitt You said the chairs dont spin at all
a s h e s No I didn’t.
I adore this ride, as some people from TowersStreet will know, thanks for uploading the video Mark :)
went on this yesterday i had no idea it was a illusion i was proper scared i am terrified of heights lol and actually felt like we was going right over and over i was shaking when it stopped, well done its amazing
when riding you can kind of understand it, but when it goes upside down and the dramatic music starts your head just dies
Kathryn Lakic You don’t go upside down. It’s an illussion.
The seats rock while the room spins around🤷🏻♀️great ride🤩
svnflowr x do u wear seatbelts or is it just a bar. and is it a family ride?
The best ride there in my opinion
Agreed this with the GF yesterday after our second go :)
Went on this last year and my brain just exploded from how trippy this was
I went alton towers today and went on this twice its so good :D
brilliant ride
Wow I'm going to alton towers soon this looks amazing!! Can't wait!!
I remember going on this as a kid, it was super disorientating... which I guess is the point.
It really feels like youre going upside dow
I thought this ride was great! I had a mini heart attack, I thought I was going upside down so I was holding onto my back pack with my feet for dear life!
Absolutley Adore this ride !
@Rct3Mad300 it is made by vekoma as it says vekoma several times on diffrent parts of the vault machinery
The idea behind a ride like this is pretty simply but must have been a logistical nightmare to pull off.
Youve got to have the ride swing in perfect sync with relative rotation of the room at the appropriate height and speed (otherwise the illusion wont work and people will get motion sickness) whilst to the rythym of the music....
we got stuck in room 2 the doors wouldnt open for 5 mins xx
the narrator of the ride is me Carson off downton abbey xxx
Yeah its Vekoma if you look at this type on Vekoma's website it actually shows a picture of the interior
@SUGARstation Definitely not FACT, sorry ;). The vault's machinery is all located outside the vault, so can't be seen from inside. You definitely don't go upside down, it definitely is an optical illusion.
@Rct3Mad300 I'm afraid you're entirely wrong there - 'tis definitely Vekoma ;). If you take a look in the cobntrol cabin of the ride (as of course we did on this evening), you'll see the Vekoma logo engraved on the main control panel
...and if you search for 'Mad House' on the Vekoma website, you'll find the model ;).
Mack do have a version of Vekoma's Mad House - the Revolving House - but this one's entirely Vekoma ;)
now that is one big mystic swing
you go to a similar height to what a swinging ship does just in a slower motion.....when the right sets off you feel your self get heavier but because the swing and the room both move in sync at the start you consider it as nothing then in perfectly timed movements both the seats and the room move...the room moving more
No, the seats only move about 15 degrees each way.
@@danielledewitt1 appreciate the reply 9 years later 😂 it's about 30 degrees though
@@bensonguitar So what if I’m 9 years late? No it’s not, just feels like it.
@@danielledewitt1 okay thank you for the info
This traumatised me as a kid and I haven’t been near it since... but my stupid ass is returning in a month to ride as an adult 😂
Such an awesome illusion xD
Wait so how big is that barrel thing
It’s a huge drum.
It made my mum feel sick but loved it
No, the thing you're sitting on actually moves back and forth a little to trick your mind into thinking it's moving upside down as they move the vault room around you.
Both...
Sometimes in sync and sometimes in opposite directions to create the G effects as if you were looping inside the vault.
this is a amizing mad house but the first one is also a great ride vila volta
@Marleyl9 no it just rocks inside and the outside spins
@Rct3Mad300 I saw a trailer about the Madhouse on Vekoma's website and it showed Hex
I went on this and it confused the actual shit out of me because it felt like the seats were actually moving
Crazy Gamer The seats are moving.
Oh, this is like the haunted house ride in Six flags! Jackson, New jersey
I Webb on this ride!
You don`t go upside down. I went on Hex a few years ago and sitting opposite was a girl with long hair. If we went upside down then her hair would be pointing towards the ground above her head but it remaind by her shoulders which means that you don`t go upside down. Try it by turning something like a doll with long hair upside down and watch the hair. Now that`s fact.
For me the best one is "hotel Embrujado" in Warner Bros Madrid, it also has an animatronic and horror things XD
When I go honest going to hold a pendant to see how much you actually swing
Yes the seats swing back and forth a bit but not much.
@SUGARstation if it went upside down everyone would fall out their seats as they arent designed to stop falling out and plus i had a bag with me and i had it on the floor the whole time and that didnt fall or anything. the room does however move slightly as my bag did slide a little bit but not upside down lol
PxChAoS16 The seats do move slightly. I have my bag and long cane with me on the floor on this ride, if it went upside down which it doesn’t but if it did I’d be stuffed because I’d lose my cane.
I can see myself!!!
Is this stolen from the Villa Volta in the Efteling? -.-
nope same company buit it (Vekoma)
Jeroen is right, its build by vekoma (that means the netherlands can make the best rides ever) so its not stolen
FreedomCityRPG No of course not. Why would you suggest alton towers stole a ride just because it’s made by the same company? It’s wrong.
the only thing that is moving is the outside walls fact the middles staying in one place
Wrong. The seats move back and forth a bit while the room spins a full 360 creating the optical illusion of going upside down.
@enIslander Yeah, As I was "Upside Down" I dropped a pen and it landed straight onto my lap, :)
wightsnowolf You don’t go upside down.
lol the room
I've been on this ride LOADS of times.. it's awesome.
You don't go upsite down. My bag would have fallen off the seats.
This is creepy AF!
muito loko
@TheRealHimself already have done
Okay, This Isn't Made By Vekoma I Just Wanted To Point That Out =D It's Made By MACK Rides Inc ;D
look It up..!
SP Coaster You are telling lies. It’s made by vekoma.
The snow button at the bottom does not suit this!
The villa Volta in the Efteling is better
XD ua-cam.com/video/zoIExvyYQ0M/v-deo.html
Watching it on video ain’t so bad but I hate being in it, makes me feel sick as which is a shame because it’s really good :(
