The circle of fifths is more useful than most people know. It's more than just a dusty, old diagram of key signatures. It's actually a powerful tool for songwriting that allows you to create chord progressions in any key and mode.

This is a text-book video for any TEACHER that wants to learn how to teach.
People who can explain the theory are a dime a dozen, but someone who can cook it down to something that also visually interesting and simple to follow - is rare to come across.
One of the clearest explanations of modes in the Circle of Fifths. As a beginner, I really appreciate this.
There are several channels that try to explain things but they expect a higher understanding of music theory or technical ability. That is a real art. Merci beaucoup.
Thank you for this! Super clear & helpful
If this was taught to me this back when I start learning music I might have become the professional musician my guitar teacher imagined me being.
you sure?
Never too late!

Are you?...
@@SuperSedingAngeL-yr0 ???
how does anyone teach music without talking at least a little about the circle of fifths?
Your graphics are absolutely killer! They demonstrate everything you say and leave nothing to the imagination. Just brilliant.
Bravo, heartily agreed..
Soooo many screenshots! Lol.
This is a godsend of a video. I finally see the beauty of the modes in the circle of fifths that I was missing all these years.
Remember kids: I Dial Phones Like My Aunt Laura.
Fun mnemonic.
Very good. Nice flow of information. Good graphics.
Best video has done more to unlock the guitar for me than anything I've read or watched in the last 2 decades . Thank you Mike.
This might be the best Circle of Fifths tutorial video yet! Incredibly helpful with the visualization it presents.
instant sub! I actually had my jaw drop in real life when I saw the animations. That made more sense than it has since day one. THIS is how you explain theory.
Thank you for the intensive graphics and well-placed audio samples to accompany your clear and succinct narration.
MG this is pure genius, the greatest instructional music video on UA-cam. this could be a TED Talk. you have deciphered the code that leads to pure joy. many thousand thanks
This is the clearest explanation I've ever encountered of this! Thank you so much!
Great lesson...love the "palette" analogy! Love the Pachelbel Progression..I m practicing it in all keys on the piano..If Pachelbel only knew how famous he became! He died in 1706...the year Benj. Franklin was born!
this was by far the best explanation of the circle of 5ths i've heard, prior to this I had a vague sense of relatedness between chords but didn't really understand the underlying mechanics of that.
Of all the videos i've watch re: chord progressions/music theory this is by far the best. Thanks for posting
The circle of 5ths is the periodic table of elements to the informed or seeking musician in music...!
This is the most lucid and brilliant explanation of the formerly enigmatic COF. Most videos spit jargon. This is actual understanding. With clear graphics. You ROCK! Yakmala!
I've loved the Circle of Fifths for decades.. and your videos have been more than helpful in helping me to (re-)discover the uses for it.
I'm glad you explained why you used the A Major chord in the Aeolian mode version of the 'Pachelbel' progression. as I *did* expect the A Minor there.
...but looking at the modes through 'the circle' is something I hadn't thought about for building progressions. Most helpful. Fanx! for posting :)
The best description I have seen!! Awesome. Thankyou 🎉
I wish I could have heard you explain this 50 years ago! Thank You!
Great lesson as always.
You definitly deserve a fast growing channel! Thank you.
This is a great video. I almost didn't click it because piano is my main instrument, but glad I did because I've played and composed for almost 2 decades and have tried to understand and embrace the CoF many times but have never understood it's purpose or had the confidence to use it properly until now. Something about the way you explain it just finally clicked for me, I feel like a light came on and a door opened. I'm so excited to get home and sit at my piano now. Thank you so much, and I'm definitely subscribing now.
This explanation is super helpful 👍🏽
It's amazing the difference a good teacher makes. I've tried to get my head around this a few times without much success.... Until now.
Thank you for sharing,.
Your content is amazing. You're like the Carl Sagan/Neil DeGrasse Tyson of music. Gives me that sci-fi sense of wonder feelin, except for music. Thanks for posting this and for all you do. Applying the guitar stickers to my Fender Strat today. Hoping to learn the fretboard so I can sight-read.
Thumbs up and I subscribed. Been in music for decades and knew about the Cof5 but never completely committed to learning it in and out.. a very ingenious music theory tool.
I've been playing guitar again for over 2 years. I'm 46 years old and I love the blues, and I can riff with pretty good. But, until this video that I found by luck, now I can honestly say, "Thank You Sir!" I understand the circle now thanks 2 you!
This is a WAAAAW explanation of the circle of fifths. Thank you so much!!! Cheers from Morocco!
Love the diagrams going to have to grab that
Thank you. Eye opener!
Very well done. Loved it.
I've never played keys in my life and only took a brief, single semester guitar class in high school, which I failed. After a few videos and several hours just banging around on my midi controller, I feel like I am able to actually play. I even found a few basic progressions to existing songs just by listening for them and knowing now what chords look like and how they interact. Thank you for this video
That was incredible, phew thats so helpful.
This is beautifully crafted, such a great way to focus on music from the beginning and not waste time. This is years of confusion, wrapped into a 15 minute all you ever need..
Dear Mike, your theory explination is outrageois and fantastically very well laid out to eye and mind, just to understand how music theory actually functions. Watching your vidao channel is a great pleasure. Somehow every thing made sense to me when I watched your video a couple of times. I like and appriate your method of tutoral teaching. Especially for the beginners like me.
Thank you for this video. This was so informative
This is the clearest explanation I have ever found on circle of 5ths. Amazing graphics too. Merci buckets!
I recently purchased The Chord Wheel by Jim Fleser and used this video to help learn how to use it. Thanks for a clear cut explanation without all the music mumbo jumbo.
If you're wondering what that sound was, it was me shouting "Eureka..." in Ionian mode !
Great explanation. Thanks Mike, I finally get the Circle of Fifths... 🎉
Well done Mike, Took classical lessons as a kid and never delved big into the theory of the circle of fifths, just understood it as the trip up through the sharps and down through the flats. This tutorial makes it so easy to understand their relationships for song writing, or be able to listen to any song and recognizing the different modes or progressions used. Very cool.
A really fabulous explanation of the circle of 5ths, and modes, Mike. Thanks a ton.
Wow! Yes! Finally thanks a lot for showing it in a best possible way🙋🎸
Damn no words mike. I wasted so much money on music theory lessons. But this video is a blessing. you
are a real Dr.Practical this will help me so much brother. Thank you keep doing what you do.
This has got to be the best of the best explanations I have seen. Thanks!
Wow! very cool. explained so well
Thanks for taking time to explain everything there is to know about this.
I remember when my piano teacher tried to teach me this, and I’d ask why, and she’d always say “cause all musicians have to” and then I got burnt out just trying to memorize everything. Not really learning how to apply it or how everything connects. Now I feel like I’ve graduated a PHD in physics
literally, it is everything
amazin! very helpful thanks!
This is one of the better explanations of the circle of 5ths that I have seen. Thanks for this
Komplexe Materie einfach erklärt und vor allem gut visualisiert, merci
Thanks for sharing Mike, you have opened up this old man's eyes to make sure of this.
From Charlie
This is a really great explanation of the circle of fifths. Very helpful, Thanks!
You're a brilliant and gifted music teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
this explanation helps me a lot. I now understand more about the transposition of chods of a song from different octaves. tnx sir Mike
Very helpful, thank you. The moving template that outlines the diatonic chords and how to use it to change chord progressions like you did with Pacabel's was particularly useful.
To me, its actually pretty easy to tell which chord types are by position,. This seems to be shown in any book containing basic there. The thing that I failed to connect in my mind is how the chords are associated to the modes of a scale.
Great explanation. Thanks!
You do great work. Thank you.
Nooo way! The circle of fifths is a gift for humankind to make music!
hello mike, never heard of your YT channel before. this must be the 20th video i watch to try and understand the circle of fifths, im not even halfway through and its making incredible sense to me for the first time on how it works. im subscribing rn, great work my bro!
Amazing…big thanks
The best explanation I have ever seen.
Impressive.. it gave me ideas where i never knew to go
amazing AMAZING video
Thank you. God bless you
God bless you!!! Love to see your music journey
THANK YOU FROM OUR HEARTHS BRO !!! SIMPLE AND AWESOME LESSONS
An excellent explanation. So well put together. Thank you!!
You got yourself a sub!Great video with visuals🙏🏾. Perfectly explained
OMG can I come live with you Yoda? I swear severely visual people like me NEED to learn a different way! You are on to something ! Thank you!
Excellent and so useful . It puts everything in perspective.
Phenomenal lesson. You should build an app with that with the wheel so it’s movable and adjustable to each key and mode. I’d happily pay to own an app that I could easily cycle through this for chord progressions. Really brilliant lesson
I use an app called smart chord, it's very usefull and has lots of other tools too
@@thisisjuliacosta I don’t see it in App Store. Is it Android ?
@@bmcd ohh that's a pity, it's android only :(
You js helped me learn how to write a song, I needed to learn how to write a melody n what chords I’m on a learn I’ve always been stuck when it came to figuring out chords bc I’ve never knew about the circle of fifths until today which is really helpful you explain this so well and now I can song write for my school band n I could now understand my guitar more rather than just knowing “oh it js sounds write bc it music I mean idk how to make it myself all I know is that it sounds like music” but now I can make sense of it and have more creative liberties when it comes to understanding how to do that (new sub btw)
Dude. Thanks.
Exactly what I was looking for. You rock
Thank for this! Also Hotel California moves in fifth s 😅
your method is like an expansion on the "hooktheory' series where they color code roman numerals to show chord progressions. awesome stuff!
This is pure gold. Thank you!
Wow , that was so good ! I need to find a chart like that , that is so useful , thank you
Awesome vid/tut - thank you 🙏
So easy to understand that seems unreal. Great job. Thanks!
This is insanely helpful to me, I can play most of the chords on the chart but the concept of different keys has always confused me greatly and so I've only played by ear. I have wasted plenty of hours trying out chords to see which match well, where with the circle of fifths I have a much clearer idea of what my options are.
I'm not very smart at music theories but when you explained modes , I sort of hear Do Rae Me Fa So La Ti Do .
Awesome! Thank you 😃
Mike, you are a BEAST😃. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS. You give us a whole new world 🌍🎉🙏
Wish the part about switching the progression to minor had been slowed and explained more, but very well made video.
Deep for a beginner, but glad I found this information.
holy shit. Ive been playing for 38 years and I never knew any of this. I feel like rage quitting. this will literally change my life (of playing), should I decide to go on 🤣🤣
Thanks so much! With your ColorMusic ChordMap (excellent product!) and explanations, you have done a masterful job of compiling the bits of knowledge I have developed over the years into a far more useful physically condensed foundation upon which I will now continue to grow. Besides the colors, I've also found your use of the squares and circles to be exceptionally helpful to my thinking.
OMG! Saved as a favourite too! Music theory education at its finest. That was easily understood and I followed along no problem. Thank you for your efforts to create this theory lesson.
My mind Is blown ! ❤
This all made perfect sense - thank you!
💖💖💖 Thank you very much!!!
Very Helpful, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks
Brilliant teaching. thank you.
thank you so much! i was so stucked what the hell is key about and now i've got it haha Bless you and happy new year!
YOU ROCK! Thanx for the explanation. You're so ditatic, specially by using so clear graphics and demonstration with musical examples. There's just one thing I think you should consider: you talk too fast, and play the examples too accelerated. For some not into musical theory, like me, and who doesn't have the english as native language, it gets a little bit complicated to follow up. Thanx for the job you had to make all this stuff.
Shut up and take my money! Mind blowing, tks for share
like it ??? i loved it.. you have just won a new follower
