Growing up the things that scared me the most were the swimming sections. Especially the first water level, that open water gets me so bad and then there's the eel... I love this game though.
No no no the same goes for me, DS version and all, and I DISTINCTLY remember that the secret water course in the Jolly Roger Bay room had two sections connected by a small tunnel. I REMEMBER when I replayed the game when I was like 13 noticing that there was no second area and no tunnel, and being a bit confused about it. I think B3313 is pretty neat, and all of these places genuinely seem so liminal and dreamlike, though it's nothing I have any personal relation to. Except that one underwater stage. That somehow looks pretty much EXACTLY how I remember it as a kid here. I'm not sure how to explain it besides me misremembering, which I doubt, it being a coincidence, or someone else having dreamt of it the same way, but it caught me off guard so bad.
@@KageTheDanish I remember a bunch of places. I recall one where I was falling into the Castle Courtyard, but it was night-time and I seemed to be Bowser. Another was me being on the Castle Grounds, but it reached around the whole castle. There was a Chain Chomp on a pole and it was sunset. The most memorable one I have was of 2 staircases, side by side, leading to the door to the 3rd floor. Opening it led to a dark mirror room with Luigi and Wario paintings on the other side of the glass.

It really is fascinating how these experiences seem to be so common with people who played the original as children, but also exist for those who grew up with the DS version, which... Can be just as liminal, if not at times even more so. So thanks for sharing, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has some kinda surreal associations with that game. :)

I'm not really a fan of horror games or M64 but these videos have been fantastic to watch! Also I think that the Prince Bobomb was King Bobomb in the past, since it mentioned "where did the river go" and then when going through that pipe you would enter a version of the map before it was gone, implying the past.
I can't decide if Prince Bob-omb is supposed to be past King Bob-omb or not. One of the "every copy is personalized" things that a lot of people have false memories of _is_ encounters with a character called Prince Bob-omb. And the comment about the river might pertain to the M64 iceberg, which points out that the painting of Bob-omb Battlefield has a river but the level features no water in it. So it's totally possible it's a couple nods to personalization stuff and general M64 mysteries. But, like, I think it's way more fun for it to be past King Bob-omb, so I sorta just have that as my headcanon instead.

This is the most effective kind of horror in my opinion. Nothing in your face or even that loud but just constant unsettling vibes with the occasional, rare, truly terrifying moments that catch you off guard, are sudden, and leave you asking what the fuck?
yeah, one time I was playing the game, gamed over a couple times, then when I reentered the castle it had no music and only one door, which led to some creepy barren Whomps Fortress in the void with text that just said "objective: get ⭐" and after I did that it took me to another version of Whomp's that was similarly barren but had a timer ticking up in the top right, and when it ran out, Mario suffocated. Needless to say I was scared shitless by that experience
Tip for the our very own Uncle DGR. There are in fact "endings" to this game! There are multiple ways of getting to it! Just find more red stars like you did in the first castle at the very beggining and you will eventually, (Key word eventually) Find your way to it!

While there *are* around 400 stars, there aren't enough IDs to go around, so many of them end up taking a singular slot, hence missing stars you don't remember collecting. Speaking of, there WAS an ending planned once you collected all of the red stars, but the final red star was never put in, so you can never access final Bowser. It really fits the narrative of it being a beta version though.
If you play on 1.0 Unabandoned (you’re playing on 0.9, though I've also seen it called 1.0 Abandoned... it's weird) then there are no longer duplicate star IDs, and there will be more functional Red Stars to help you progress! And it'll keep your progress! Though some of your stars may get shifted around, it will keep your caps.
Don't. 1.0 Unabandoned is a bootleg version made by a bunch of ex-devs who ran off with the ROM and have been asked numerous times to remove stolen content. They responded to this by threatening to dox Chris, the original creator of B3313. They also raided his discord using a permissions exploit and have been trying to whip up a mob on 4chan. DO NOT PLAY UNABANDONED.

While I can't condone the raid, it also seems to me that both the ex-devs and Chris handled a lot of situations very poorly, and I understand their desire to fully complete and commit to the game, getting angry at Chris's rude behaviour, while Chris kept flip flopping between wanting to work on it and wanting nothing to do with it and to only focus on his music due to stress and loss of passion for the project. For now, It's probably the best version and most "complete" way to experience b3313. At least, until chris and the rest of the devs actually finish their 1.0 version, if that ever even happens. You can play the romhack without necessarily supporting the actions of the devs behind them.
B3313 has gotta be my favorite romhack, I love how expansive it is and how it feels like a gigantic non-Euclidian labyrinth. Plus it lets me show off my navigational skill which is nice :3
what gets me is these npcs in literal impossible geometry that would have taken an extreme amount of effort to FIND let alone get into, and they just stand there like "yo this castle is crazy :)" and mario's like "greg we haven't seen you in five-a years. your-a family misses you."

this is what nintendo wanted with the 64dd bob-omb battlefield has a past, present, and future peach's castle has a past, present, a good future, and a bad future. the ui has a past and present version (though there are different variants of the such) some stars are linked to other stars (so maybe a past/present/future thing? maybe collect the past version of one to get the other versions?? idk)
It's not that hard to navigate once you get what's going on. There seem to be 4 layers/dimensions. Each has its own layout. There's a door on top of the castle. There's a door and a hole on the left side. There's a door on the right side. There are two holes under the bridge. There are hidden warps all over the place. If you ever come across a dark room with a bunch of spotlights and a yellow switch at the end, don't activate that yellow switch. It will make your game obnoxiously difficult, make a lot of the stars inaccessible, make everything larger like the level itself, it'll cause weird glitches the more stars you do get.....and it affects all save slots. You would have to literally delete the save file manually from the emulator folder. You need at least 30 stars to get to bowser and beat him. I've sank about 80 hours into this romhack.....it goes very deep. It would be awesome to see you give it more time. The most recent version is 1.0 + Hotfix. I'm pretty sure the game doesn't crash anymore at that shadow Mario jumpscare.
Gamestop should start selling game cartridges of this and just call in "super Mario 64" People will buy it and then people will post screenshots online talking about how GameStop versions are really weird and then more people will buy it and then GameStop will end up with tons of money
GOD, i've just gotten 100 stars in this mod, let me tell you it was an experience! It took me so long... i don't recommend trying it out tho, unless you have a bunch of patience, overall very fun!
