The Expanse is stunning in every regard; the storylines, the acting, the visuals…
To someone who usually hates TV it was really weird to be so enthralled and so hooked, right from the first episode. Fantastic show!

And then a scene like the "meteor beheading" is the result of it. That's one that stayed with me ... First time i watched it i was like "W t f!?! Nooo they didn't!?!?" ;) Came out of nowhere and was completely seamless...

@ilovevegies2 One of the earliest, 'A Trip to the Moon' was around 1902 and moving pictures were invented around 1890. You can watch the whole film here:
      ua-cam.com/video/xLVChRVfZ74/v-deo.html
I like to chuck music on in the background. Finding music to go along with silent films is highly enjoyable, try Queen, Smashing Pumpkins or Moondog...
You might like to watch Die Nibelungen, Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

As Tim mentions at the end, nearly all practical effects have a "layer" of visual effects on top (keying, rig removal, etc.), so these days "special effects" tends to be used to describe that combination, whereas "visual effects" means 100% CGI and "practical effects" means 100% on-set.

For over forty years, I've done live theater. Mostly opera.
Building things that actually work in real life seems to me to be the quintessence of "props".

It is almost all garbage. Goes right into a bin. Most specially built props and effects are owned by the show. So they go into storage if they were expensive, or a set sale at the end of a season, or the garbage bin. The industry is pretty wasteful, though there has been a shift in the last couple years. But when it comes down to it, it is almost always cheaper to throw something away, than store it.

Damn I really want to work at one of those FX shops. Its right up my alley with my skills. I am not super good at one thing but can do a lot of things good enough. Welding, machining, using most shop tools in general, electronics, 3d modeling and printing, woodworking, plumbing. Its the type of job I'd love to get but being in oklahoma kinda stops that from happening. The closest I could get here is being a general purpose handyman but I hate going to peoples houses and dealing with them also its not that exciting working on the same home appliances day in and day out. Right now I do phone repair/retail work and I am burnt out on the phone repair because its the same phones every day. You can only fix so many iphone 6's or 7's before you get bored. Also I despise the retail side of it as getting treated like garbage by "class-ist" people (im at a shop in the wealthier side of town) slowly kills you and makes you more and more depressed.

Feel free to move, follow the opportunity if you can. 👍
Later in life you'll regret most the things you didn't do.

It's doable if you want to move to LA. Just know that it's very rare to find a full time position at first so you will be working two jobs for a while. Also research where the SFX houses actually are, LA is a big place. You could also try places like Vancouver. Rent is high but it sounds like you have the skills for a better paying job out here.
