I WANT TO LIVE! I want to clarify, Zoro had a lot of cool moments. But he hasn’t had the emotional development a lot of characters have so far. I’m just waiting for him to take the spotlight.
I like how in One Piece pirates aren't necessarily thieves. Being a pirate in One Piece means saying that you are not part of the World Government. And this is enough for them to hunt you down and kill you. For some people the only freedom they can have is being a pirate.
@@cethapplegate594 fs, morj did a great video on what freedom and being a pirate means in one piece. I'm pretty sure its called "the politics of one piece" or something like that. Definitely check it out if you haven't already
@@cethapplegate594 People tend to look at history's pirates like thieves, but really they were not so far from what the one piece shows. Many of them did set out to seas just for the freedom and the government also cataloged you as a pirate if you rejected being under the government.
@@DanielGreeneReviews yeah but I think the Author handled this very well because at the end Usopp had to apologize in order to get back to Crew so he was clearly in the wrong side but at the same time we can understand why he did what he did
Not only that, Usopp received Merry from Kaya, he was the one fixing it, it was literally the strawhats home, the ship was alive and this was built up from Skypiea
zoro is meant to be the stoic warrior character here...he learns ashura off screen after the aokiji loss...thats what hes doing when everyone else is well running around confused...probably his best attack to date
The Usopp/Luffy conflict is actually one of my favorite beats in One Piece. On the one hand you're angry at Usopp because he's clearly being unreasonable, but on the other hand you know that he's only flying off the handle like this because he's come to associate the Merry with his own place on the crew. His girlfriend got them the ship, he's the one who handles upkeep, and that's given him a role even as the others are rapidly surpassing his abilities. But now the ship is broken, and to make matters worse, Usopp - who's basically been a poser this whole time, trying desperately to seem stronger/more experienced than he is - has been humiliated and exposed as a liability. He was beaten and robbed by a gang that the rest of the crew crushes like an empty soda can. Usopp has no more lies to hide behind - he's failed as a warrior and apparently as a shipwright as well. He's at his lowest ebb. But the fight that follows gives the audience an intimation that there is hope for Usopp - he has possibilities. Yeah, of course Luffy holds back, and Usopp takes advantage of knowing Luffy's style, but it also shows us that when Usopp is finally backed into a corner and stripped of all his pretense, there are glimmers of more ability than we (or even he) might have expected.
yeah, i think its easy to understand how ussop feels pressure when he sees one crewmember get tossed away when it becomes useless, because why couldn't that be him?

RE: Did Oda have this all planned? Originally this story was only going to last ~5 years. Oda has had the skeleton of the story worked out since the beginning, but he created such a flexible (heh) world that the story has just grown and grown for 20+ years.
oda had the skeleton of this story mapped out to its conclusion by the time he was 18 i bleieve he got in trouble in school several times for drawing what he named at the time "pirate manga"
The reason Usopp was so upset by the situation with Merry was that he was afraid of the crew abandoning him. He knows that he isn't strong and hasn't done that much so when he sees how (seemingly) easily the others let go of Merry, he realises that the same thing could happen to him aswell. Also Merry was a gift from his friend Kaya so he has a stronger connection to the ship because of that too. As to his fight with Luffy, he's taking it very seriously, because his beloved ship is on the line, and he actually had prep time so I don't think it's weird that he managed to hold it against Luffy for a while.
@@123rikin this. Ussop was fighting both for the ship and for himself. Especially after the Franky family mugged him, which left him emotionally in shambles. Man, I love W7
Add onto this that Usopp knows how Luffy fights, so he knew exactly what he needed to do to counter Luffy. Usopp may not be the strongest fighter, but he’s a clever strategist, and since he has time to prepare, it actually ends up giving him an edge over Luffy, who was certainly holding back where Usopp wasn’t. Of course, Usopp’s strategy could only get him so far in the end because once Luffy stops pulling his punches, Usopp doesn’t really stand a chance anymore.
"Masked figure that is very clearly Usopp." Understandable mistake given you going back and forth between the manga and anime. That masked figure is actually Sogeking. He's a friend of Usopp's. On a more realistic note. Luffy's new power was something he started working on after the fight with Aokiji because he realized he needed to be much stronger to protect his crew after they all lost against the Admiral. So between Long Ring Long Land and Water 7 was when he was training. Similar things happened with the rest of the crew trying to make themselves stronger after that loss. Oda skipped over the training because it wasn't terribly important to the story and given the nature of the target audience (young boys in Japan) having big reveals of powerups during tense fights is necessary. Also, Nami's new skills are only possible with the improvements to her weapon made by Usopp and the technology they found on Sky Island. Since you're aware there is a timeskip. I will say that most fans rank this Saga as the best (or tied for best) in the stuff that happens before the timeskip, so it makes sense that you would rate this as a 10/10, and why so many people were waiting for you to reach this arc. I'm glad you're willing to look past the Usopp hate a little bit. I can understand with all the pushback from the comments saying you'll love him eventually that you would want to stick to what you already believed. The apology while making gagging noises is a funny compromise to both those ends. (I'd also like to note that the person that heard the Going Merry call out to them was Usopp. And he was the one who told the crew to jump into the sea, and they all did it without hesitating, because they trust each other.)
Oda has also admitted he just doesn't like training arcs. He thinks that they ruin the "surprise" of the technique that the characters are going to use to defeat the bad guy. It's probably also why Oda almost never has that "power-up = easy beatdown" and treats it more as this new power-up is simply evening the playing field.
@@jacobgerber3666 True, you can see Oda's preference at play with how he teased Gear 3rd with Luffy demolishing that giant steel door off-screen and leaving you wondering "How he do that?"
the way I see it, luffy wasn't training offscreen (especially since he said the CP9 fight was what gave him the idea for gear second, which wouldn't make sense to train timeframe wise) he just...got an idea of how to play with his rubber pwers. and because of how devil fruits, especially paramecias like luffy's, work, he can just...do it. Because he decided he could try it.
I get that but a little more of a hint would be nice. Rather then having Luffy say "I have been working on this since Aokiji" when it is revealed maybe show five minutes of Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji working out a bit. With Zoro its fine because we actually do often see him training, but even a 5 min sparring match between the three would have been nice. Just something to really show that they were working to become stronger.
Gear 2nd actually had a decent bit of setup, but it's easy to overlook: 1. The monologue Crocodile gave him about the importance of learning to use his fruit more creatively and get stronger got him thinking 2. The crew getting absolutely _wrecked_ by Aokiji (and then CP9) made him realize he needed something new in his arsenal 3. The fight with Bellamy (spring guy) on Jaya gave him the inspiration for the move itself... notice how he does the exact same pose/leg-pump? It's a good example of Luffy's creativity in combat, and the fact that he's a lot more observant/intelligent than he seems on the surface (in some ways)
Usopp is kind of like Batman. With knowledge and prep he can certainly do wonders. It's essentially Superman vs Batman. Can we expect Batman to realistically and fairly beat Superman? HELL No! But Again, with the right prep can go the distance for sure.
Yep. Usopp is fodder at close range and without adequate planning. The Franky family jumped him. Then he went already beat up to try to get the money back. Of course he had no chance against the whole family plus Franky himself, specially when he knew nothing about Franky being a cyborg.
Oda didn’t plan it all out from the beginning he said he planned a 5 year series but then he added the 7 warlords and some other groups you’ll see. He’s so masterful with foreshadowing and tying ends that it feels all planned out. Also one piece’s 24th anniversary is tomorrow
Just to clarify. Supposedly oda knows the ending. But then he's just developing the road one week at a time, where he actually draws most of the manga by hand.
@@unalx He has several notebooks for example for Wano ect. Wano is most likely all planned out, so he definitely plans ahead much further. Having a plan is crucial for all Mangaka since they have to talk it over with editors. There also is a video showing his process of working on a colorspread with a digital program. He probably still draws the Manga by hand, but it seems like he‘s not opposed to using digital programs sometimes :)
What makes Eiichiro Oda's storytelling even more impressive is how he's doing it WEEKLY. By the end of Water 7 arc, he had been both drawing and writing this story for 8 years, at the pace of a chapter per week.
@@waynicliz even if he has the story already planned, the sheer amount of details in every panel is already impressive. Btw, Oda's editors said he sometimes change the planned out plot if fans are trying to figure out what's gonna happen next.
There's a lot of reasons to why ussop reacted the way he did -ussop has a special relationship with merry, it was given to them by his girl -he saw the klabbauterman and sees the merry as kind of alive -he sees himself in the merry, a guy from a tiny village that shouldn't be on the grand line and Luffy replacing the ship makes him very insecure about himself.
He also wasn’t there when the crew was told it couldn’t be repaired, so he was operating under the assumption Luffy had changed and was willing to abandon a ship which could still sail.
The more Daniel reads One Piece, the more he'll wish he'd payed more attention to the early chapters. So many characters and ideas are set up there. Also i can't wait for the inevitable Daniel and Merphy One Piece collaboration.
@@furorteutonicus9045 Sorry, I’ve been reading a lot of Dresden Files and there’s a character there called Murphy, so I’m constantly getting the two names confused recently
So I’d recommend against the anime going forward. Not too long after Water 7, Instead of going for filler arcs, the series transitions into filler moments in canon episodes, leading to glacial pacing.
@@tomanzd. Is it actually? I'm currently watching the first act of Wano, but I'm watching the One Pace version. It seems like they definitely stepped up their game in terms of animation quality, but has pacing also gotten better?
To put how bad it can get an anime episode usually adapts 3-4 chapter. One piece at its worst sometimes will not apart a full chapter per episode, and can easily go under 2.
Ngl, I'm kinda curious what's gonna be his opinion on it once he gets to reading/watching hxh, especially that arc that's pretty divisive among the fanbase(I'm also talking about narrator-kun)
If you're picking between the manga and anime I would DEFINITELY suggest read the manga as the anime suffers from some pacing issues later on in the series. This was simply due to the makers of the anime needing to slow down to ensure they didn't catch up to the manga content. :)
There has always been pushing issues with the anime. It's not just not wanting to catch up but also financial reasons. There really is no reason for each chapter to be a single episode.
I kind of love the fact that you and Merphy have such different opinions, (almost exactly opposite opinions except for Luffy) It's fascinating to follow along with both of you.
And this is such an inferior review of the two. So much he just talked thru like it's whatever or nothing at all, like Usopp and Franky discussion about Merry/Klabautermann, Zoro lecture to the crew about Usopp apologizing, Robin and Usopp talk in the train how Usopp said she should just absolutely believe in Luffy even after they just had a falling out, and not even a single mention of Jaguar D. Saul? Etc. etc.
I think it’s pretty clear Merphy has started taking her reviews much more seriously whereas these are still half-assed. It’s pretty clear he skimmed Usopp’s Water 7 narrative. It’s not even about a subjective opinion. There are literal story beats which would have made Usopp’s POV much more sensible had attention been paid. You can still come away from Water 7 disliking Usopp, but to say it makes no sense demonstrates a lack of attention.
@GCP2 Okay? I don’t care if he gives it a 1, 4, 7, 10, or 42. He’s posting a spoiler review, but he crams two major arcs into one video, clearly skimmed a lot of the content (I’m not the only one who noticed), and skipped tons of relevant content. As a review, it was barely organized and felt like a cheap way to draw the eyes of the One Piece community to make money off the ad revenue. Truth be told, I understand UA-camrs like MerphyNapier and TotallyNotMark also want to make that sweet ad revenue, and I’m fine with it. They have created some great content and it truly seems as if they care (even if they are faking it). Daniel’s reviews kind of come off as uninspired. It’s as if he sees his contemporaries having success and is trying to cash in, but not really putting in the same commitment. I love hearing other people’s thoughts on series I love because they give me new things to think about and look at it from new perspectives. Daniel’s video this week didn’t offer that. Daniel may have given it a 10/10 (which seems odd considering how much he criticized it), but I’ll give his review a 6/10.
This is what i love about onepiece, people can enjoy it with different reason, aspect or etc. You could enjoy it with though it was a dump fun comedy, enjoy it as brilliant story telling, enjoy it as epic adventure, enjoy it as life changing philosophy story, enjoy it for "cultural" purposr, or else. Onepiece as a series is also embodiement that kind of freedom for me, a freedom how you enjoy it.
A very good Zoro moment in this Saga was the whole scene about Usopp where it shows Zoro scolding Luffy for not doing his duties as a captain. It showed why he is the vice captain and how he doesn’t put up with any bs from his friends.
Yes! I was just about to make a comment about this, and am happy that others have already done so years ago. I'm surprised Daniel didn't discuss this in the video, and actually said that Zoro wasn't developed much. As much as his character wasn't really developed per se, we saw a new facet of him as the de facto first mate that we hadn't seen before.

Going Merry was a gift from Usopp's friend. I remember the sentiment was like "go into adventure and im with you in spirit" so its understandable why Usopp cared so much about Going Merry.
@@iamdivan7368 Well, you are free to like or not a character, that depends completely on what you as a person like... But! You disliking a character doesn't mean it is a bad character. I personally don't like ussop, but he is a great character. So I find it funny how he is apologizing but hate him at the same time, It's great.
I think the reason people love the Usopp-Luffy conflict is that despite knowing that Usopp is wrong, we can understand where he’s coming from. He thinks the ship is sentient, and beyond that, he sees the letting go of the Merry as the letting go of a weak crew member, which he thinks of himself as.
I'm surprised that no one mentioned that Usopp saw the spirit of the Going Merry in Skypiea. Like, the others all say that the ship was a part of the crew, but Usopp is the only one who saw that the ship was a real, living being with a soul and hopes and sadness, and they've been managing to keep on going because Usopp was the one keeping her together. Of course he's going to be the only one freaking out when the others can easily move on: to them it's just a ship, to him, she's a friend he's been keeping on life support for months, and he's being told that she can't get help because she's no longer useful.
This was the arc that made Usopp my favourite character. He's the reader perspective character, and an injection of realism and humanity into this otherwise insane otherworldly crew. Also he has long been luffy's closest friend on the crew to pal around with and be a kid with. Which makes it all the more tragic when they fall out in this arc.
Thing I appreciate about Usopp's cowardice is that most if not all thing things he freaks out about is are absolutely reasonable things to freak out about. Really got seas filled to the brim with monsters that can literally swallow a ship whole, the most insane and dangerous weather conditions imaginable, and crews of merciless super pirates to name a few. I would bet real money most of us would be screaming our heads off right along Usopp if put in this scenario. As it goes, true courage is not the absence of fear but pressing on despite it, so in that respect Usopp is the exemplar of courage.
@@ChaosSepher EXACTLY. took the words right out of my mouth, Usopp will always hold a special place in my heart, even 1000 chapters in and nearly that many characters to choose from.

Usopp wasn't my fave when i first saw him in the 4kids dub of the anime he became my fave in the funimation dub, where his hidden bravery was made more clear in how he was willing to fight a group of bloodthirsty pirates by himself to save his village despite being terrified out of his mind. So basically I've loved him since he was introduced, its just Water 7 shows the full depths of his character and developement

I’m surprised you barely mentioned Franky and him joining the crew. But great review, overall. I have to say that I agree with most comments here that you should probably stick to the manga from now on. Just watch back some scenes you wanna see animated. Especially the last scenes of the next saga. You’ll understand when you get there.
Sabaody- marineford should be watched in anime then in manga but adter time skip he should read until wano and then watch the anime coz wano is amazing
The thing about Usopp is that you also condemn him for being so determined to keep the ship, but I think it makes him a lot more real for me. He can make mistakes, he isn’t perfect, he isn’t always right, but seeing him learn from his mistakes and move on is some amazing development. Usopp doesn’t have to be strongest, but I can relate to him a lot and I find him quite funny. This is why he is one of my favourite characters, also his post time skip designs are great.

I remember watching an interview with Eichiro Oda and he said that he had an ending planned from the very beginning, just that the story was supposed to go on for only 5 years. He said that as he wrote the story he came with new ideas and expanded his world with them. So in short he had main key points and an ending planned from the very beginning just that how he goes from point A to B is decided as he writes.

Oda says he has known the ending of One Piece since he started but that whenever he comes up with new ideas it extends the story. Also he just wants to keep writing these characters he loves. @@akrybion He actually looks exactly like GRRM (knowing the end, growing everything to 100%), difference being GRRM doesn't want anyone to finish his work while Oda is fine with that.
The reason Ussop put up a decent fight against Luffy was that he had ages of preparation time, the Franky family ambushed him, completely different scenarios.

Zoro didn’t develop? He played a major role in the saga. He acted as a real first mate, telling Luffy that if he just accepts Usopp back after the way he disrespected him as a captain that he will be the one to leave.
He didn't develop in a sense, he didn't grow out from what he already was. Though that is the point of zoro. He still has moments where he is slowly growing but its not in your face when that happened.
I second this. It was i think the very first time when he strongly opposed Luffy, solidifying the crew himself and making point that it's not a play but serious business. Never has Zoro played such role before, no one also had such strong statement. It really is a breakthrough for Zoro's character, from being just a muscle, to being the backbone of the Strawhats.
He already developed in Baratie till Arlong Park on an emotional front, there isn't much room now to develop him in that regard. What this arc is starting to develop though is just how unyielding Zoro's loyalty is to Luffy and the Strawhat crew despite how ''lone wolf only focused on his ambition'' he may seem.
We saw his buddies in arlong park and that he , dunno has friends an chooses to go forward to become the strongest, not because he has nothing left. I thought that two were there to flesh him a bit out. An baritie. And do you really thing "nothing will happen"
You do understand that usop’s identity is tied to the boat, he feels that if luffy can get rid of the ship because is useless now, that is his future too.
i guess people forgot usopp's past with his dad mom kaya and whose ship it is..smdh...its called trauma..usopp feels he lost the money and one day he will be left like the ship...i get where he came from
Sad that you didn't go into Franky in this arc. He's one of my faves and I think his backstory and how it ties into the plot and it's emotions are really good.

Zoro didn't develop? He portrayed the fact he is the vice-captain in great ways throughout multiple moments in this saga. From the words spoken after the Usopp vs Luffy situation to the whole Usopp not being allowed back without an apology first and foremost.
I think he couldn't mention everything in a 30 min video. Zoro first mate moments were so good. I hope he does smtg like a live stream talking in extensive detail on each scene. Coz as a one piece and wheel of time fan I love it when it becomes long and detailed.
Also, yeah! Zoro constantly reinforcing Luffy's authority in the whole Usopp conflict was phenomenal. If any of the Straw Hats didn't develop much in W7, I'd say it was Chopper more than anyone else. And even he got some development by being willing to gamble with his body via Monster Point!

@@patricknnt1301 honestly wano has better fights it was nice seeing luffy punch the shit out of kaido without touching him cant wait to get it animated but all the arcs are great in their own way
As for the reason Usopp stood any sort of chance against Luffy, Usopp has been fighting alongside Luffy for long enough to know his techniques and abilities very intimately and have at least an idea on how to counter them. It would be the equivalent of playing Civ against a close friend. Just because you rush the Great Library so that he won't get it like he always does doesn't mean he won't win, but it will put a wrinkle in his usual strategy and maybe put you ahead of them for a few turns.
I feel like Zoro is the steady centering point that allows the other Straw Hats to do the weird things they do and still have a place to come back to. Like when he tells Luffy that as the Captain he can't just take Usop back until he appologizes for what happened earlier. And don't worry. Nothing Happens with Zoro in the next arc.
There's another reason Usopp reacted the way he did, other than the fact that it was a gift from his childhood friend, Kaya, there is reason #2: There's a parallel between Ussop and The Going Merry. He (most likely subconsciously) views The Going Merry as himself. At this point in the series, Ussop is considered probably the weakest of the crew, and he is constantly and ever-so-painfully aware of this. So to him, seeing Luffy having to replace Merry at its weakest point (even if he doesn't want to), makes Ussop think that he himself is probably expendable to the crew too. So he is reacting in such a way that he is worried, saddened but honestly knowing deep down (yet outwardly denying) that it is inevitable and knows it HAS to happen, and his reaction and what unfolded next was his way of grieving/coping. Which is what makes the part when he dives into the canal when talking with Franky and says something like "you don't think I know that??" when Franky says the ship is beyond repair, hit so much harder. He just needed time to accept it. Also regarding him being ashamed to show his face was actually a sign of how much integrity and loyalty he has: I saw a comment on another video that Usopp is incredibly cowardly but when his team needs him, he steps up, regardless of how he has to do it--even if he has to wear a mask and create a whole 'nother persona to do it :) Honestly I wasn't always a big fan of Ussop, but this arc really made me respect him so much more!! :)
@@poof9327 If you need an explanation, I’m aware through multiple reads that the first three sagas are crucial set up, which leads to the payoff of the fourth. What I mean by my comment is that most readers don’t get a clear picture of the scale and scope of the story and its conflict until this saga. For example, we don’t learn about the Yonko or who the primary antagonists of the story are going to be until this point, or that there’s a Void Century, forgotten kingdom, etc.
Usopp put up a fight against Luffy and how it made sense is because he knows Luffy. He knows how Luffy is as a fighter. Usopp is very familiar with Luffy's moves and technique and that gave him an edge because as a crew-member, he sees that. That just proves to the audience that if Usopp is given an enemy that he can prepare for, he can do it and defeat an enemy pretty well because of how resourceful he is as a fighter.
I guess when Usopp didnt want to let go of the Merry, his thoughts were that he would be left off as well at some point, because he is the weakest crew member and he thought that at a certain point he wont be able to catch up and cant be helpfull on the next adventures, just like the Merry
That's literally it. Especially since he's aware of the power gap between him and the others. He's aware of everything Daniel keeps insulting him for and insecure about it.
Usopp had to prepare how to use the new Tech he got from Skypiea (Dials) to get ready for Luffy, and His power-up will be explained next Arc. Nami's powerup also came because of Usopp and Skypiea tech (dials), Sanji learned his powerup during the fight with nose noodle Chef, Chopper always had that powerup, it's just too dangerous Luffy learned his powerup watching CP9 techniques, Luffy might be stupid but he is fighting genius, If he sees and understand something he can make it happen Zoro's powerup is the most mysterious one which you have to wait for Waaaaaaaaaaaay too long to understand All these powerups didn't happen in Water 7 because Water 7 incidents happened to them and they didn't have time to think for a sec, while during train sequence they had some time to think and prepare for whats to come and they knew they need new things if they want to win
I’m thrilled. There are so many times I’ve been tempted to leave a comment trying to correct you, but I’m glad i let the story do the work and speak for itself.
i actually think thriller bark is right there emotionally comedy wise and story wise in moments to water 7 sabaody dressrosa alabasta wano ennie's lobby and marineford aka peak one piece...the issue is its a bit dragged out and slow at times and stuff happens that really did not need to happen like focus on sexual humor and pervy characters...thats why people hate on it...robin gets felt up and no one does anything..nami was probably raped off screen when shes out cold aka a mind slave
I feel like you’re cramming too many arcs into each video, since the sagas are getting really long now, you can get through all the missed out parts if you go arc by arc
I think the first half of this saga has way too many cliffhangers and unfinished plot lines that it wouldn’t be fair to review on its own. I’m personally glad he went ahead and included Enies Lobby
@@ikariiprince eh I disagree. Merphy covered it arc by arc and it was super enjoyable and amazing. Preferred her reviews to Daniel's, but both are great!
To be fair her videos are more of a reaction than a review... Which I prefer since only OP fans would watch a water 7 video.. Review is for non followers
My hat goes off to Zoro in this arc as first mate. It suddenly became real when he threatened to also leave the crew. You forget that a captain still needs to be a captain and make some tough choices. Luffy might be a bit of an idiot, but he has his nakama to keep him grounded, and that is why Usopp is valuable to the crew. Especially when ol' rubber boy can't bounce back.
dunno if it was mentioned anywhere else, but the bad weather and tide coming in was established back on Long Ring Long Land with the nature of how the tides effect that island. very neat world building there imo.
As a fellow former Usopp hater, I loved him instantly when he and Luffy started fighting. It was one of the most impactful moment of One Piece I had till then and I did not see it coming.
It's not about where you are in the story. I'm now after Thriller Bark, and Usopp still does nothing for me. I know and understand all his fans points, still, personally, not, a fan.
As for why luffy wears an afro, there's a point in the series where some character (i don't remember who) mentions that when you wear an afro you feel strong......I don't really get it I think it might just be an Oda thing
Usually during my rereads of one piece I follow this pattern. I read the manga and watch the key moments in anime, like Robin's I want live, nami asking for help,etc.. for the most part the manga is better but sometimes the anime is top notch. East blue saga - anime/manga Alabasta saga- manga Sky island saga- manga Long ring long island- manga Water 7, enies lobby- anime Thriller Bark- manga Summit war saga- anime ( this part of the story is really well paced in the anime and I personally prefer it to the manga) But after the end of this arc until the recent arc the manga is way better coz the anime slowed down the pacing so much. So after summit war saga until u reach the current arc it is better to read the manga. The current arc as really good animation. Though the pacing is still really slow, the animation is so good that u could forgive it for that. I have reread or rewatched one piece this way like 10 times .
“Does the Champion make the Afro, or the Afro makes Champion?” is legit one of my most favorite gags in One Piece, I can’t even explain why On the subject of Oda planning, a lot of people praise his foreshadowing and in many cases I think its his masterful ability to re-contextualize already existing plot. Where most writer would create new characters or worldbuilding element, he would go back how could connect what he wrote in past with the present, enhancing both.
Water 7 is still to this day my favorite saga, a lot of sagas have come and they are just as good in terms of a lot of things, but this one is still perfect for me.
For me, the fight between Luffy and Usopp is one of my favorite moments in One piece, because we see these best friends that we have been following since the beginning getting in to this huge conflict. Usopp character in a way is constantly fighting against being a coward and in this arc especially in the beginning he's doubting his value to the crew (when he loses the money and breaks out crying for having failed), It's something that he has been feeling for some time, so when Luffy comes in with the sad but rational decision of having to say goodbye to the sunny, Usopp does react in an emotional way because he does feel like it's a part of the crew, the sunny was with them since the beginning along with Usopp, in a way you can parallel it with how he has been feeling , and he can't accept it, so he challenges his captain. And here's the thing, I disagree with what you said about power escalation, I do believe Luffy went all out, he would not disrespect Usopp especially with what we know about them and what makes this moment so powerful is the fact that Usopp is giving his all! Since the beginning, his dream is to become a brave warrior, and we have constantly seen him having to step up when the moment gets rough. So Usopp knew that he had to give it his all in this battle, it's not that luffy could have beaten him easily, we know Luffy is a force of nature, but usopp tried and held his own against his captain and when the fight ends it's tragic, we knew who was going to win but seeing the crew devastated, it hurts. I think it's a powerful moment for Usopp growth, and I really do hope that you can come to appreciate it and usopp character from here on out. I'm sorry for it being so long, I love your reviews, hope you keep on enjoying One piece!
I would argue that Water 7 still is the peak of One Piece. When it comes to character moments and overall writing there pretty much is no other arc that comes close.
I WANT TO LIVE!
I want to clarify, Zoro had a lot of cool moments. But he hasn’t had the emotional development a lot of characters have so far. I’m just waiting for him to take the spotlight.

Just wanted to comment that this is an excellent writeup and I couldn't agree more.
Perfect
Also, Luffy decided that the ship will be replaced withouth even discussing it with Usopp, which makes Usopp feel more worthless
Damn this got me a little emotional lol
yeah, i think its easy to understand how ussop feels pressure when he sees one crewmember get tossed away when it becomes useless, because why couldn't that be him?

RE: Did Oda have this all planned?
Originally this story was only going to last ~5 years. Oda has had the skeleton of the story worked out since the beginning, but he created such a flexible (heh) world that the story has just grown and grown for 20+ years.
Skeleton....
YOHOHOHO
Skull joke??
Oda is perfecting the Dao of hiding things in plane sight. Looks like you picked up a piece from his masterpiece
oda had the skeleton of this story mapped out to its conclusion by the time he was 18
i bleieve he got in trouble in school several times for drawing what he named at the time "pirate manga"
not entirely true oda has known from day one how one piece will end
The reason Usopp was so upset by the situation with Merry was that he was afraid of the crew abandoning him. He knows that he isn't strong and hasn't done that much so when he sees how (seemingly) easily the others let go of Merry, he realises that the same thing could happen to him aswell. Also Merry was a gift from his friend Kaya so he has a stronger connection to the ship because of that too.
As to his fight with Luffy, he's taking it very seriously, because his beloved ship is on the line, and he actually had prep time so I don't think it's weird that he managed to hold it against Luffy for a while.
Yeah exactly
He had prep time..... Usopp is Batman confirmed!!!!

"Masked figure that is very clearly Usopp."
Understandable mistake given you going back and forth between the manga and anime.
They arent even from the same island!
@@jacobgerber3666 True, you can see Oda's preference at play with how he teased Gear 3rd with Luffy demolishing that giant steel door off-screen and leaving you wondering "How he do that?"
the way I see it, luffy wasn't training offscreen (especially since he said the CP9 fight was what gave him the idea for gear second, which wouldn't make sense to train timeframe wise)
he just...got an idea of how to play with his rubber pwers. and because of how devil fruits, especially paramecias like luffy's, work, he can just...do it.
Gear 2nd actually had a decent bit of setup, but it's easy to overlook:
1. The monologue Crocodile gave him about the importance of learning to use his fruit more creatively and get stronger got him thinking
2. The crew getting absolutely _wrecked_ by Aokiji (and then CP9) made him realize he needed something new in his arsenal
Gum gum cannon actually also had his body start to heat up both times we see him using it, too
Luffy held back a lot, and Usopp had hours of prep time and an extensive knowledge of how Luffy fights
Didnt he also use Skypea dials that they just recently got?
Yep
Usopp is kind of like Batman. With knowledge and prep he can certainly do wonders. It's essentially Superman vs Batman. Can we expect Batman to realistically and fairly beat Superman? HELL No! But Again, with the right prep can go the distance for sure.
Yep. Usopp is fodder at close range and without adequate planning. The Franky family jumped him. Then he went already beat up to try to get the money back. Of course he had no chance against the whole family plus Franky himself, specially when he knew nothing about Franky being a cyborg.

Just to clarify. Supposedly oda knows the ending. But then he's just developing the road one week at a time, where he actually draws most of the manga by hand.
Apparently there were only supposed to be 5 War Lords but he liked how Shichibuki i (7 War Lords) sounded better. So he added 2 more

Btw, Oda's editors said he sometimes change the planned out plot if fans are trying to figure out what's gonna happen next.
There's a lot of reasons to why ussop reacted the way he did
-ussop has a special relationship with merry, it was given to them by his girl
-he saw the klabbauterman and sees the merry as kind of alive
-he sees himself in the merry, a guy from a tiny village that shouldn't be on the grand line and Luffy replacing the ship makes him very insecure about himself.
He also wasn’t there when the crew was told it couldn’t be repaired, so he was operating under the assumption Luffy had changed and was willing to abandon a ship which could still sail.

I wouldn't say he was revealed
I'm surprised that no one mentioned that Usopp saw the spirit of the Going Merry in Skypiea. Like, the others all say that the ship was a part of the crew, but Usopp is the only one who saw that the ship was a real, living being with a soul and hopes and sadness, and they've been managing to keep on going because Usopp was the one keeping her together. Of course he's going to be the only one freaking out when the others can easily move on: to them it's just a ship, to him, she's a friend he's been keeping on life support for months, and he's being told that she can't get help because she's no longer useful.

Whil hoim and sanji have moments, i love sanjis emotionality, and ussops growth and insecurities that plgue him, and are his real enemy, not the crew or even the world government. He learns its fine to be the best sniper an lysop he can be.
Also its his girlfriends ship, odf course he reacts unreasonable when asked to abadon it
Usopp wasn't my fave when i first saw him in the 4kids dub of the anime
he became my fave in the funimation dub, where his hidden bravery was made more clear in how he was willing to fight a group of bloodthirsty pirates by himself to save his village despite being terrified out of his mind.

Lol because it's 15 volumes in 30 minutes... We need to get the arc by arc review movement going here
Sabaody- marineford should be watched in anime then in manga but adter time skip he should read until wano and then watch the anime coz wano is amazing
Old Daniel reviewing One Piece and talking exclusively about how much "good time and not serious vibes he was getting" and me just finishing the 10 hours long Reverie stream on lore, discussion and theories. Now you might be starting to gaze at why it's called the wheel of time of manga.

You are the only person I heard have such a wild take on Luffy vs Usopp. Basically everyone gets emotional to that scene. I bawled my eyes off. Usopp's love interest gifted our crew that ship. No one told Usopp the true shape of the ship & if you watched the anime, the way Luffy delivers the news to Usopp is very cold and nonchalant. Going Merry crying broke me. DESPITE this, I LOVED this review.
Honestly i skipped through the usopp Luffy fight because I'm not a fan at all of him and this was probably the arc where i liked him the least, i honestly was tired of seeing him and thought he was fully gone, i was wrong
“Still not sure why he wore the Afro”
Daniel… sir… get an Afro and go pick a fight with someone. Oh you’ll know why he wore that fro when you’re standing over your opponent’s crumpled form.

Those who diss the afro are fools who do not understand its power and thus do not deserve it
(but for reals, its just a silly joke about cool hairstyles, don't take it so seriously XP)
Famous Japanese boxer with an afro is why
The afro allows you to tap into the true power of the Brotha Soul, giving you the eye of the tiger and the will to Fight.
Oda says he has known the ending of One Piece since he started but that whenever he comes up with new ideas it extends the story. Also he just wants to keep writing these characters he loves.
He's also said that the ending of the story is prepared and kept in a safe that his assistants have access to in case he dies before finishing it.
Now I'm just imaging them opening that safe, reading the ending, and in shock, drop it to the floor, proclaiming, "N-no. NO WAY!!!"

The reason Ussop put up a decent fight against Luffy was that he had ages of preparation time, the Franky family ambushed him, completely different scenarios.
Not sure if you noticed it, but another subtle change after this arc ended which was so nice is seeing Robin actually start saying the crew mates names instead of Swordsman, navigator etc..

I clarified above.
I opened youtube hoping to see this, and here it was! Today is a good day.

"Usopp, I'm sorry." ~ Daniel Greene
And even he got some development by being willing to gamble with his body via Monster Point!
zoro didn't develop because nothing happened.
he did not do that yet that came next arc..
@@razkable You realize this was a saga review, hopefully..? So therefor this was about post-ennies lobby as well? I am not referring to nothing happened. And if that was your assumption you must be dense.

@@patricknnt1301 honestly wano has better fights it was nice seeing luffy punch the shit out of kaido without touching him cant wait to get it animated
but all the arcs are great in their own way
As for the reason Usopp stood any sort of chance against Luffy, Usopp has been fighting alongside Luffy for long enough to know his techniques and abilities very intimately and have at least an idea on how to counter them.
Now the real story begins!
wtf it begun since episode 1.

The usopp vs Luffy fight is still to this day one of the best moments in one piece.
When it comes to one piece, the longer the better. Great job with this review series.
Nami's powerup also came because of Usopp and Skypiea tech (dials),
Sanji learned his powerup during the fight with nose noodle Chef,
Chopper always had that powerup, it's just too dangerous
Luffy learned his powerup watching CP9 techniques, Luffy might be stupid but he is fighting genius, If he sees and understand something he can make it happen
Zoro's powerup is the most mysterious one which you have to wait for Waaaaaaaaaaaay too long to understand
All these powerups didn't happen in Water 7 because Water 7 incidents happened to them and they didn't have time to think for a sec, while during train sequence they had some time to think and prepare for whats to come and they knew they need new things if they want to win
I’m thrilled. There are so many times I’ve been tempted to leave a comment trying to correct you, but I’m glad i let the story do the work and speak for itself.

But after the end of this arc until the recent arc the manga is way better coz the anime slowed down the pacing so much. So after summit war saga until u reach the current arc it is better to read the manga.
The current arc as really good animation. Though the pacing is still really slow, the animation is so good that u could forgive it for that.
I have reread or rewatched one piece this way like 10 times .
Crunchyroll needs a 2x speed button so that the current arc wouldn't feel so slow in the anime.

Wano animation is actual eye-candy, the pacing is so stupid in some places, ok we've seen this flashback for the nth time, thank you, please move on.
“Does the Champion make the Afro, or the Afro makes Champion?” is legit one of my most favorite gags in One Piece, I can’t even explain why
On the subject of Oda planning, a lot of people praise his foreshadowing and in many cases I think its his masterful ability to re-contextualize already existing plot.
