Part 5 - Why Vacuum column diameter is larger than Atmospheric Column?

  • Chemical engineering interview question answered. This part discuss about the effect of pressure on Column diameter. One point I forget to mention in this context. Some time in interview one question asked is 'Why Vacuum Column is costlier than Atmospheric Column?' The one answer may be Column diameter is large. But it does not give clear picture because at low pressure relative volatility increases. So height required may be less. Actual answer is the thickness of Column Shell. Thickness of Column shell remain high for vacuum column as there is very low inside pressure and outside pressure is atmospheric pressure. So stress will be high.

      Sandeep Academy vacuum column is tray column or packed column, if packed which type of packing ...And how do we increase or decrease pressure inside the column

      In our VDU it is structured packing.Only draw trays are Chimney trays. Pressure can be increased/decreased using pressure control valve. In VDU we can increase/decrease vacuum by adjusting steam in ejectors. Hope it make sense to you. But we never change pressure to increase throughout, the concepts maintained in last part of video is only helpful if your throughout is limited by column flooding.

      @@SandeepAcademy9 Sir i have studied on net that As a rule of thumb, plates are always used in columns of large diameters.... So VDU should have tray, isn't? Please clarify my doubt. Thank You,by the way,you are best.

      @@Shubham-fe7il Vacuum Columns are prone to collapse hence VDUs are packed towers as the packing as acts as a support.

    Also explain the effect of pressure on column height,...
    For a same binary mixture and same process conditions inside two columns, one is operated under vacuum and other is operated under atmospheric pressure..
    In which case, number of theoretical stages( column height) will be less..??

    Sir, column differential pressure is very less(25 mmHg) in vacuum column compared to atmosphere column differential pressure (400 mmHg= 0.5kgf/cm2) , it may be the region that vapor velocity will be less in vacuum column.
