    The fact Korra and Asami share a guest room makes you ponder where Korra lives in Republic City now. Granted, Asami's mansion is currently hosting Mako and Bolin's family from Ba Sing Se. But it's not too far fetched Asami has been using the master bedroom since her dad got arrested; so plenty of room for Korra.

      Taye T. Akinde Not for a lack of trying, though! If we’re being honest about it, the kids in these shows should have killed dozens to hundreds of people with their bending... The shows just sort of sidestep the consequences of hitting someone with a two ton boulder or a fireball strong enough to blow apart a two tom boulder.

      Speaking for myself, I don't really see the arguement for the dislike of Kuvira's arc. Since her debut in season 3, she's been shown to have a stone-cold personality and iron will. I thought it was fairly obvious she was coded as having antisocial personality disorder from approximately her 3rd appearance in season 4.
      This doesn't excuse her actions of course, merely explain them.

      @Mako I mean, Bryke _really_ messed up with Mako and the comics didn't really do Azula justice, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily a pattern. Just look at Zuko, with his phenomenal character arc and legion of fangirls...

    • @maladjustedmaverick6619
      @maladjustedmaverick6619 4 роки тому +16

      @Mako Yeah... I don't consider LOK a part of my personal cannon for that and a number of other reasons. I've half-seriously toyed with the idea of writing a fanfiction of LOK as I wanted it to be, or at least of the first season. One of the major changes would be that much more focus would be placed on the tensions between benders and non-benders, and between different races, as a result of the Hundred Year War and the technological boom that followed, and I would use Mako and Bolin as a vehicle to explore these issues. As a result, Mako's main priority would be looking out for his brother and himself in a world that increasingly seems to have no place for them, and he would have an arc outside of being the obligatory love interest. In fact, I would stick with Makorra in the end, but I would develop it over at least two seasons and give them a completely different dynamic. In the beginning, Korra was inexperienced and a bit of a brat due to her unusual upbringing, and Mako would be perhaps the first person who doesn't care that she's the Avatar and refuses to take any of her crap, at the same time challenging her naive assumptions about the world. There would be mutual dislike at first that would turn to friendship by the end of season one as they're forced to rely on each other. My version of Mako has none of the wishy-washiness of the original and is all around a much darker, more intelligent, and cynical character. He's someone who believes in looking out for himself because no one else will, and is skeptical that someone as important as the Avatar would actually care about insignificant people like himself and Bolin. Korra, of course, manages to change his mind, and at the same time he tempers some of her foolish optimism.
      As for Azula, I get what you're saying about her attractiveness but I think you're forgetting that she's, y'know, insane. A relationship with her, at least at this stage, would most likely be a manipulative and mutually self-destructive disaster. Even if she were to overcome her mental illness and be redeemed, I doubt it would be very high on her priority list, as independent as she is. That's not to say it would _never_ happen, but I personally don't consider it a necessary part of Azula's character arc. I'd much rather see her deal with her parental baggage and finally gain some peace of mind.

      Not gonna spoil anything, but I was honestly kinda disappointed by how Azula was written after The Search comic.

    For those who are worried, this is not the last comic for either series. Creative teams are returning. Books aren’t always announced right after the last one ends. Also, the Avatar 15 year anniversary is coming up very soon. It’s very possible announcements have been held off until then. Relax guys. There’s more coming. Is no one going to talk about how Kuvira and Baatar jr were raised as siblings?
    EDIT: as I’ve realized that though Suyin claims she raised Kuvira as her own it’s become more obvious to me that this isn’t true. Throughout Book 3 she’s never threated as part of the family nor is she even included in their family picture. So her and Baatar jr dating might not be so weird after all.

      @@haydenberends3905Still, considering that over the course of this storyline, Opal wrongly accuses Kuvira of not feeling guilty for everything she did when she lead the Earth Empire (even after Kuvira surrenders herself to the Beifongs and says she would accept any punishment deemed necessary by the world, even apologizing to Suyin for what she has done); insinuates that Kuvira would have gladly resorted to brainwashing in order to stay in power, and that the thought had just never occurred to her; jumps to the false conclusion that Kuvira has taken advantage of Suyin's goodwill and betrayed her again, and insist that Suyin admit as much; and acts indignant whenever Suyin decides to give Kuvira the benefit of the doubt, even accusing Suyin of always having had a soft spot for Kuvira (completely ignoring the facts that, just three years, Suyin cast Kuvira our for wanting to go out and stop all the chaos in the Earth Kingdom, never offered her a chance to come back like she did Bataar, and ― just *three months* ago ― *tried to assassinate Kuvira* in spite of a truce Korra had brokered with Kuvira); her assurance to Kuvira at the end that while she might not have been born a Beifong, she will always be part of the family, really does come across Opal pulling a complete 180. Especially since, even while doing to this, she never really admits to having misjudged Kuvira nor apologizes for how she treated her.
      My opinion is not helped by fact that it's stated by Bolin in the first issue that Opal had told him that Kuvira had always pushed people away in the past and had rejected Opal's attempts at friendship when the two of them were growing up; only for the third issue's flashback of their childhood to show *Opal rejecting Kuvira* , refusing to acknowledge her as her adopted sister and calling her " *a stray dog that nobody ever wanted, not even her real parents* ". In fact, it seems to imply Opal gave Bolin a self-biased account of her and Kuvira's history and has possibly been skewing that story in her favor her entire life.

    This was a great comic but Part 3 feels rushed and it seems they retconned Kuvira's relationship with the Beifong family.
    In Book 4, Suyin explicitly stated that Kuvira was LIKE a daughter to her meaning she was never legally adopted into the family hence why her last name isnt Beifong.
    In Book 3, Suyin doesn't introduce Kuvira as one of her kids and doesn't bother to correct Lin when she states it must be a nightmare to have 5 kids when she has 6 if you count Kuvira. Kuvira also isnt present in the family photos nor is she seen dining with the rest of the family at Opal's going away dinner.
    Suyin acted very coldly towards Kuvira when she simply asked her to reconsider restoring order. She had the nerve to banish her adoptive daughter but not her biological son who plotted behind her back along with Kuvira. She is willing to pull some strings to get Baatar a more lenient sentence but not Kuvira which is ridiculous as Baatar is just as guilty as Kuvira as he was aware of her policies and helped her implement them. He was the one who wanted to take Zaofu by force while Kuvira preferred to take it through negotiation.
    I wished we could see Kuvira interact more with Huan and especially Baatar Sr.Also they really didn't flesh out Kuvira's past as well as I wanted.

    • @lucaras7689
      @lucaras7689 4 роки тому +39

      Exactly what I was thinking! In the series, Kuvira was obviously not an equal part of the family (especially because of Suyin's behavior). Heck, Suyin tried to KILL Kuvira in book 4! When Kuvira was having temporary truth with Korra! (If Su had succeeded, Baatar Jr would have been the new commander of the Earth Empire (he was stated to be Kuvira's second in command), so Su would have had to kill him too. But of course, Su would never kill her real children, only Kuvira, whom she obviously never loved as deeply).
      And in the first comic of this trilogie, Kuvira finally brought up that she was never really part of the family!
      But no, instead of maybe having Su realize that she maybe isn't the enlightened innocent perfect person, the last comic just ignores all these established things and paints Su again as the most selfless mother ever! Because god forbid that we, the viewers, maybe see Toph's daughter in a negative light for once.
      (Sorry for the rant, I'm just so annoyed by how Suyin-can-do-no-wrong-Beifong always gets special treatment by the series, even to the point where the writers establish a new canon just so she can be the perfect good guy again.)

    As much as I love Kuvira and the idea of "Ruins of the Empire", I can't help but feel like this third comic was a little too rushed and couldn't quite deliver on everything the first two comics have been setting up. Kuvira's redemption arc should have had at least five comics I'd say.
    For one, Bolin's struggle with finding himself wasn't resolved at all. Wu's struggle with taking responsibility and being a good ruler was also not really adressed further, but the solution for it was at a good one.
    Kuvira's relationship with Baatar Jr. wasn't resolved here, but that's fine, since that really takes more time (and hopefully will be further adressed in future Korra comics). Kuvira's and Asami's relationship, on the other hand, really should have had more development. Especially since I wanted to see Kuvira directly talk about that issue and apologize to Asami.
    Kuvira's arc itself felt kinda rushed in the end. It was set up so well: Kuvira was now working with the good guys, but she mostly did it for her own reputation and to get out of prison. She was still thinking that all her actions were justified, and whenever someone confronted her about the problems she caused, she was quick to defend herself. Her mindset can only slowly change when she goes through all the denial and even hate against her (especially Asami and Baatar Jr.) she herself caused, almost gets the reeducation camp treatment (brainwashing), gets a lot of distrust and so on. She has to get slapped in the face with the consequences of her actions, in order to develop. This all happens up until one third of this comic. The problem is that Kuvira changes a bit too sudden and by the end of this comic (the same comic where she in the beginning still sees almost killing her fiancé as justified) she suddenly feels bad and guilty about everything she did. Her redemption arc was started and set up so well, that it really deserved a just as satisfying conclusion.
    My biggest issue, however, is how Kuvira's relationship with the Beifongs/her "family" was handled. In the series, there were so many hints that Kuvira was never really part of the family. Her missing on the family picture, her missing at Opal's farewell dinner, Su not introducing her to Team Avatar, Su not correcting Lin when she talked about five (instead of six) kids being a nightmare. When Kuvira in the first comic said that she was never really part of the family and mentioned that she was treated differently than Opal, I was so glad that the comics promised to finally adress this and maybe have Suyin finally realize that she perhaps isn't that perfect enlightened innocent person she thinks she is and finally have her develop some responsibility herself. But no, all of a sudden, Suyin has always been a perfect mom to her adopted daughter (the flashback in this comic completely contradicts itself with what we saw in the series). Instead, Opal, who "always tried to be Kuvira's friend" is the one who doesn't accept Kuvira into the family and insults her behind her back in the flashback. That's what really frustrates me with this comic.
    (In general, I feel like it's a big problem of the series and the comics that they paint Suyin as a much better person than she actually is).
    Overall I still enjoyed this trilogy a lot, especially Kuvira, I just wish it would have been longer so that it would have done everything it could have done.

    • @maladjustedmaverick6619
      @maladjustedmaverick6619 4 роки тому +11

      Completely agree with you about it being rushed and about the way they treated Kuvira's relationship with the Beifongs, especially their portrayal of Suyin. Something I might add is that the flashbacks in the comics make Kuvira seem like maybe she was always a little violent and unhinged, which I suppose might explain why she eventually turned "evil", but first we're given this picture of an innocent child abandoned for no reason and treated differently by her adoptive family, and then these comics make it seem like her parents and the Beifongs might have had a reason for their behavior. Especially the fact that she apparently _killed her mother_ in a fit of rage. It was an accident, but I still don't like it. In the flashbacks, she's never really shown as the victim. She's yelled at and locked in her room by her parents, sure, but only after she breaks something (I think; it's been a while), and then she proceeds to demolish the wall of their house. She's abandoned, but only after she, ahem, _kills her mother_ . Not the most compassionate parenting ever, but honestly, pretty understandable. Opal calls her a stray dog, but she's a selfish, immature kid dealing with unexpected disruptions to her family life, and it's only after Kuvira crushes the dollhouse out of spite because Opal wouldn't let her play with it.
      It's almost like there are two versions of Kuvira presented by the show and the comics. In the show, she conquered the Earth Kingdom and took over because of her abandonment issues, which, had it been explored, could have actually been a compelling motivation and made her into a more complex character. (I commented on another of these videos why I didn't like the handling of Kuvira in the show either, but that's beyond the scope of this reply.) Now, it's no surprise, because she was always a tyrant and maybe even a little psychotic. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the comics don't do a good job making Kuvira seem sympathetic to the audience through her backstory, even though that seems to be what they're trying to accomplish. Which isn't at all helped by this new angelic version of Suyin who apparently never joined a gang, participated in a heist and who knows what else, scarred her sister's face, forced her mother to resign as chief of police, and then gallivanted all over the world without ever having to serve time. Kuvira's psychotic tendencies also beg the question of how she was able to rise to the position of a shrewd and sensible world leader and remain there for some time, although that could be chalked up to the influence of MarySuyin. (Sorry, I just had to make that pun.) They do surface eventually, but only _after_ she's conquered the entire Earth Kingdom and managed to win the trust of the other world leaders and the legitimate government in the process. So... it looks like they come out of nowhere.
      You could make the case that Kuvira's story is more or less plausible: She's a kid with anger issues in a dysfunctional household; she goes too far one day and kills her mother by mistake; she's abandoned by her parents because of this; she develops her coping mechanism of never taking responsibility for her actions to avoid dealing with the guilt; she's treated differently by her adoptive siblings because of her behavior; through Suyin's effort and patience she gets her impulses under control but still harbors some resentments due to her warped view of the world; she sees the Earth Kingdom in danger and sees no one doing anything about it, which speaks to her feelings of abandonment, so she decides to do something; she's successful until her issues catch up with her, leading to megalomania. It sorta makes sense. However, it's much less interesting or satisfying than the complex, nuanced character Kuvira could have been. That's how I see it, anyway.

    • @lucaras7689
      @lucaras7689 4 роки тому +8

      @@maladjustedmaverick6619 I mostly agree with everything you said, but may I ask were you got the fact that Kuvira killed her mother from? Because Su only said that Kuvira hurt her mother, so it didn't seem to me like she really killed her.
      I also imagined Kuvira's backstory to be different. In my headcanon her parents abandoned her because they were to poor, and she would live on the streets almost starving until Suyin somehow took her in. It would give her a very strong motivation to help the Earth kingdom by all means, if she herself experienced the EK's poverty firsthand.
      Kuvira having always had violent impulses takes a little bit away from her complexity, since her present self seems very composed and calculated most of the time, especially in this comic.
      It would still make sense for her to become corrupt during her reign. She was young and unexperienced when she came to power, and stabilizing Ba Sing Se probably taught her that she could only bring order by doing so with an iron fist and without compromise. So she united the rest of the Earth kingdom the same way, but in doing so became so corrupt that she maybe didn't realize or not care anymore when she crossed the line.

      Because Bryke don't want to work with Nickelodeon again. They say Nick was a pain to work with. And unfortunately Nick still owns the rights.

      I guess it doesn't matter for now because what's important was the live action series in Netflix to go well first, so they can earn some money and continue the story

    Lmao kurvira was my favorite character od the series cause she was what korra would of been had she not had a good upbringing. I think kurvira had the best character development out of everyone. Even showed how far she would go for the greater good but yeah kurvira favorite charater second is azula 😂😂😂😂😂

    can i just say how kuvira looks a lot slimmer or weaker maybe smaller now. like korra's body it the beginning of season 4. you could really see what power and state of authority can do to someone and what it does when it's gone

    the ending was so happy and sad at the same time, it caught me crying!
    the music was perfect - a sad sounding, melodious tune. but next time don't use music that makes me so emotional!
