It was most likely done because they both needed a friend and at the same time don't understand the nature of healthy relationships so they're "friendship", after their previous encounters fueled by their worldviews, ended up turning into what we see. No one knows how long their relationship will last in they way it is currently depicted.

The creators wanted to portray a gay relationship in the series as part of worldbuilding and character development. However, Nickelodeon didn't want it and while didn't outright stop them, forced them to go more in the subtle direction. But we all knew and it was clear at the end that they were gay and everyone loved it. It was a good portrayal of teenage love and how complicated it can get.
